The Jovian magnetodisk plays an essential role in the dynamics of the Jupiter system by coupling its various components. Here, we investigate the Juno (JADE, JEDI, and MAG) observations of the magnetodisk within 20-80 Jupiter radii ( R J ) in the 0-6 hr local time sector. JADE and JEDI data are combined to generate equatorial plane distributions of density, pressure, temperature, and anisotropy of electrons, protons, and heavy ions. Results show: (a) Heavy ions dominate both the number density and pressure. (b) The number density and pressure of all species decrease with radial distance. (c) The temperature increases for electrons and heavy ions and decreases for protons as radial distance increases. (d) On average, the parallel pressure exceeds the perpendicular pressure for all species. Based on these distributions, we explore the equilibrium and dynamics of the magnetodisk and show that: (a) Radial force balance is primarily achieved between the inward magnetic stress and the outward plasma anisotropy force. (b) An examination of the kappa parameters indicates that electrons, protons, and heavy ions primarily undergo adiabatic motion, magnetic moment diffusion, and stochastic motion, respectively. (c) A radial diffusion coefficient is derived from the radial profile of mass, providing an estimate of the timescale for radial transport from 20 to 80 R J of ∼ 7 hr (d) The total mass ( 5.0 × 1 0 7 kg) and thermal energy ( 3.8 × 1 0 37 eV) of the magnetodisk between 20 and 80 R J are obtained., (©2024. Ocean waves induce the power peak in the seismic ground motion seen everywhere in the world between 0.03 and ~ 1 Hz, defining the seismic noise baseline. The precise generation mechanisms are well understood, and the dependence of seismic noise on sea weather has been precisely quantified using long-term time series. However, this knowledge has never been exploited to forecast the seismic noise background. Here we report the prediction of the seismic noise spectrum around 1 Hz at the Low-Noise Underground Laboratory (LSBB) in Rustrel, for up to 16 days in advance, limited by the time span of sea weather forecasts. We first characterize the dependence of the seismic noise at the LSBB on the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean weather, using buoy data for 2020-2021. We exploit significant correlation in the 0.15 Hz < f < 2.5 Hz frequency band to make predictions, converting sea weather forecasts into seismic noise forecasts. This study delves into the investigation of cosmic-ray radiation exposure levels for workers and their impact on the signal correlation subsystems at the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observatory sites. The analysis presents a detailed examination of secondary cosmic ray spectra and flux at the ALMA sites, encompassing the operational period from 2010 to the present day, with a particular focus on the consequences of extreme solar flares. In terms of radiation exposure for ALMA employees, the annual exposure at the highest site (AOS) reaches approximately 4.8 mSv. This value exceeds the exposure level of a typical nuclear fuel cycle worker or those working at high-altitude Antarctica stations. The exposure is approximately 2.7 times lower at the ALMA Operations Support Facility (OSF). Furthermore, the additional ambient dose equivalent resulting from solar events, while low for events similar to those observed since the 1950s, can reach up to approximately 1 mSv when considering more ancient solar events based on environmental archives. Our analysis includes radiation effects measurements in the Baseline Correlator at the AOS and, more generally, underscores the significance of employing accurate modeling and simulation techniques to assess the effects of galactic cosmic rays and extreme solar events on the integrated circuits utilized or planned in the ALMA correlation subsystem., (© 2024 by Radiation Research Society. The study of planets and small bodies within our Solar System is fundamental for understanding the formation and evolution of the Earth and other planets. Compositional and meteorological studies of the giant planets provide a foundation for understanding the nature of the most commonly observed exoplanets, while spectroscopic observations of the atmospheres of terrestrial planets, moons, and comets provide insights into the past and present-day habitability of planetary environments, and the availability of the chemical ingredients for life. While prior and existing (sub)millimeter observations have led to major advances in these areas, progress is hindered by limitations in the dynamic range, spatial and temporal coverage, as well as sensitivity of existing telescopes and interferometers. Here, we summarize some of the key planetary science use cases that factor into the design of the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST), a proposed 50-m class single dish facility: (1) to more fully characterize planetary wind fields and atmospheric thermal structures, (2) to measure the compositions of icy moon atmospheres and plumes, (3) to obtain detections of new, astrobiologically relevant gases and perform isotopic surveys of comets, and (4) to perform synergistic, temporally-resolved measurements in support of dedicated interplanetary space missions. The improved spatial coverage (several arcminutes), resolution (~ 1.2'' - 12''), bandwidth (several tens of GHz), dynamic range (~ 10 5 ) and sensitivity (~ 1 mK km s -1 ) required by these science cases would enable new insights into the chemistry and physics of planetary environments, the origins of prebiotic molecules and the habitability of planetary systems in general., Competing Interests: No competing interests were disclosed., (Copyright: © 2024 Cordiner M et al.)

The study of organic molecules in meteorite and return samples allows for the understanding of the chemistry that undergoes in our Solar System. The present work aims at studying ultrasound assisted extraction technique as effective extraction method for these molecules in extraterrestrial samples and analogs. Optimal conditions were selected from the investigation of ultrasonic frequency, irradiation duration and solvent effects on amino acids, nucleobases and dipeptides extraction yields from a model clay-rich mineral matrix. Optimal ultrasound-assisted extraction parameters were frequency of 20 kHz within 20 min irradiation time and methanol/water solvent ratio of 1. State-of-the-art 19th century spectroscopy led to the discovery of quantum mechanics, and 20th century spectroscopy led to the confirmation of quantum electrodynamics. State-of-the-art 21st century astrophysical spectrographs, especially ANDES at ESO's ELT, have another opportunity to play a key role in the search for, and characterization of, the new physics which is known to be out there, waiting to be discovered. We rely on detailed simulations and forecast techniques to discuss four important examples of this point: big bang nucleosynthesis, the evolution of the cosmic microwave background temperature, tests of the universality of physical laws, and a real-time model-independent mapping of the expansion history of the universe (also known as the redshift drift). The last two are among the flagship science drivers for the ELT. We also highlight what is required for the ESO community to be able to play a meaningful role in 2030s fundamental cosmology and show that, even if ANDES only provides null results, such 'minimum guaranteed science' will be in the form of constraints on key cosmological paradigms: these are independent from, and can be competitive with, those obtained from traditional cosmological probes., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interestThe authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (© The Author(s) 2024.)

The water molecule is a key ingredient in the formation of planetary systems, with the water snowline being a favourable location for the growth of massive planetary cores. Here we present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data of the ringed protoplanetary disk orbiting the young star HL Tauri that show centrally peaked, bright emission arising from three distinct transitions of the main water isotopologue ( H 2 16 O ). The spatially and spectrally resolved water content probes gas in a thermal range down to the water sublimation temperature. Our analysis implies a stringent lower limit of 3.7 Earth oceans of water vapour available within the inner 17 astronomical units of the system. We show that our observations are limited to probing the water content in the atmosphere of the disk, due to the high dust column density and absorption, and indicate that the main water isotopologue is the best tracer to spatially resolve water vapour in protoplanetary disks., Competing Interests: Competing interestsThe authors declare no competing interests., (© The Author(s) 2024, corrected publication 2024.)

There is ample evidence for magnetic reconnection in the solar system, but it is a nontrivial task to visualize, to determine the proper approaches and frames to study, and in turn to elucidate the physical processes at work in reconnection regions from in-situ measurements of plasma particles and electromagnetic fields. Here an overview is given of a variety of single- and multi-spacecraft data analysis techniques that are key to revealing the context of in-situ observations of magnetic reconnection in space and for detecting and analyzing the diffusion regions where ions and/or electrons are demagnetized. Hot Jupiters are among the best-studied exoplanets, but it is still poorly understood how their chemical composition and cloud properties vary with longitude. Theoretical models predict that clouds may condense on the nightside and that molecular abundances can be driven out of equilibrium by zonal winds. Here we report a phase-resolved emission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-43b measured from 5 μm to 12 μm with the JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument. The spectra reveal a large day-night temperature contrast (with average brightness temperatures of 1,524 ± 35 K and 863 ± 23 K, respectively) and evidence for water absorption at all orbital phases. Comparisons with three-dimensional atmospheric models show that both the phase-curve shape and emission spectra strongly suggest the presence of nightside clouds that become optically thick to thermal emission at pressures greater than ~100 mbar. The dayside is consistent with a cloudless atmosphere above the mid-infrared photosphere. Contrary to expectations from equilibrium chemistry but consistent with disequilibrium kinetics models, methane is not detected on the nightside (2 σ upper limit of 1-6 ppm, depending on model assumptions). Our results provide strong evidence that the atmosphere of WASP-43b is shaped by disequilibrium processes and provide new insights into the properties of the planet's nightside clouds. We present the state of the art on the study of surfaces and tenuous atmospheres of the icy Galilean satellites Ganymede, Europa and Callisto, from past and ongoing space exploration conducted with several spacecraft to recent telescopic observations, and we show how the ESA JUICE mission plans to explore these surfaces and atmospheres in detail with its scientific payload. The surface geology of the moons is the main evidence of their evolution and reflects the internal heating provided by tidal interactions. Surface composition is the result of endogenous and exogenous processes, with the former providing valuable information about the potential composition of shallow subsurface liquid pockets, possibly connected to deeper oceans. Finally, the icy Galilean moons have tenuous atmospheres that arise from charged particle sputtering affecting their surfaces. In the case of Europa, plumes of water vapour have also been reported, whose phenomenology at present is poorly understood and requires future close exploration. In the three main sections of the article, we discuss these topics, highlighting the key scientific objectives and investigations to be achieved by JUICE. Based on a recent predicted trajectory, we also show potential coverage maps and other examples of reference measurements. Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission. Comet Interceptor will take advantage of the opportunity presented by ESA's F-Class call for fast, flexible, low-cost missions to which it was proposed. The call required a launch to a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. The mission can take advantage of this placement to wait for the discovery of a suitable comet reachable with its minimum Δ V capability of 600  ms - 1 . Comet Interceptor will be unique in encountering and studying, at a nominal closest approach distance of 1000 km, a comet that represents a near-pristine sample of material from the formation of the Solar System. It will also add a capability that no previous cometary mission has had, which is to deploy two sub-probes - B1, provided by the Japanese space agency, JAXA, and B2 - that will follow different trajectories through the coma. While the main probe passes at a nominal 1000 km distance, probes B1 and B2 will follow different chords through the coma at distances of 850 km and 400 km, respectively. The result will be unique, simultaneous, spatially resolved information of the 3-dimensional properties of the target comet and its interaction with the space environment.
