Soil fauna is an important part of global biodiversity and plays a vital role in ecosystems. The microbial communities in soil fauna can have significant impacts on soil fertility, as microbial communities play a pivotal role in soil function by supporting ecological integrity and agricultural productivity. This study assesses the effect of biochar on soil fauna and response of microbial communities. Biochar is a highly porous organic carbon material, and the impact of biochar on microbial communities in soil fauna remains unclear. To date, no quantitative or comprehensive investigation has been undertaken to examine the effects of biochar on microbial communities in soil fauna. In this paper, we aim to quantify the effects of biochar on the abundance and diversity of soil fauna communities in various environments by conducting a meta‐analysis of 24 studies and analysing 459 observations. The impact of biochar on soil fauna communities was determined by analysing the responses of soil fauna that included differences in biochar feedstock, pH and pyrolysis, application rates and application times, as well as soil fauna with different physiological characteristics (body size, presence of exoskeletons). The results showed that biochar had a neutral (non‐significant) effect on the soil fauna community, with a total mean effect size (Hedge's g) = −0.04 (CI: −0.28; −0.20). Results Data validation using Egger regression showed no publication bias. Higher pH biochar and biochar from conventional pyrolysis were beneficial to soil fauna, but not significant (QM (df = 3) = 4.07, p =.25). In addition, body size of soil animals significantly reflected different sensitivities to biochar application, with Medium‐sized animals benefiting the most from biochar addition (0.35; CI: 0.05; 0.65; n = 6; 56). Animals with (n = 11; 125) and without exoskeletons (n = 17; 308) also showed favourable and unfavourable responses to biochar addition, respectively. This study can provide basic data for the evolutionary pattern of animal communities during biochar soil amendment, as well as information for the comprehensive evaluation of the environmental and biological effects of biochar. Having unique structural characteristics of biochar contributes great potential in photocatalysis, the preparation process complexity is still a great challenge for biochar-based photocatalysts. Based on this, this study proposes a new, simple, efficient, and flexible approach to preparing biochar-based photocatalysts by perylene diimide (GPC/PDI). The results showed that the hybridization between GPC and PDI was achieved by π-π stacking, which was reduced with increasing pyrolysis temperature, increased first and then decreased with increasing PDI content, and improved with enhanced solvent polarity. When the pyrolysis temperature was 400 °C, the PDI addition was 0.05 mg, and the reaction solvent was water, the degradation of 200 mg/L rhodamine B (RhB) by GPC 400 /PDI 0.5 was 94%, and the reaction rate constant was 10 and 4 times higher than GPC 400 and PDI, which were also effective in simulating actual wastewater treatment. The use of high quality densified pellet as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels is a promising avenue of research due to their interesting higher density, superior heating values, and enhanced combustion performance. However, little is known about the pelletization behaviors from the aspect of lignocellulosic biomass fundamental components (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) and their mixtures. This study presents an artificial biomass developed based on cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin using a simplex lattice design approach, aiming to understand the detailed role of major components and its effects on pellet quality. The correlation between the experimental data obtained from the simplex lattice design and the predicted response parameters were effectively explained by Scheffé's special cubic model, with a coefficient of determination beyond 90 %. Parameter estimates showed a significant synergetic effect of each components for density and Meyer hardness. Results revealed that xylan may be softened like lignin and thereby potentially act as binder. The use of a high cellulose concentration resulted in enhanced pellet strength by acting as a supporting skeleton. Xylan and cellulose played a major role in the thermal degradation of densified pellets. Based on the results obtained, the optimal components composition was determined to be 34.5 % lignin, 36.3 % cellulose, and 29.2 % xylan. Under this, the pellet exhibited the best density and Meyer hardness beyond 1500 kg/m 3 and 80 N/mm 2 , respectively.
