Abstract This paper presents the energy dependence of multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in p+p interactions at beam momenta 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified with the use of cumulants and factorial cumulants. Cumulant ratios are an essential tool in the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions. Measurements performed in p+p interactions provide a vital baseline estimation in these studies. The measured signals are compared with the string hadronic models Epos1.99 and FTFP-BERT.

Abstract The yields of $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons have been measured in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 31, 40 and 80 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7, 8.8$$ s NN = 7.7 , 8.8 and 12.3 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$$ Ge V , respectively). The data were recorded by the NA61 $$/$$ / SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and the $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons identified via their decays into $$\pi ^{+} \pi ^{-}$$ π + π - pairs. Double-differential distributions are presented as function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicities of $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons were determined to be $$(5.95 \pm 0.19 (stat) \pm 0.30 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 5.95 ± 0.19 ( s t a t ) ± 0.30 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 31 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c , $$(7.61 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.43 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 7.61 ± 0.13 ( s t a t ) ± 0.43 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 40 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c and $$(11.58 \pm 0.12 (stat) \pm 0.55 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 11.58 ± 0.12 ( s t a t ) ± 0.55 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 80 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with the production of charged kaons in corresponding reactions and with model calculations (Epos1.99, SMASH 2.0 and PHSD) as well as with published data from other experiments.

Abstract The critical point of strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE experiment in central $$^{40}$$ 40 Ar + $$^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at 13 A, 19 A, 30 A, 40 A, and 75 A GeV/c. The dependence of the second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distributions on the number of subdivisions in transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables. The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model.

Abstract The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± , $$K^\pm $$ K ± , p and $$\bar{p}$$ p ¯ produced in $$^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$$ 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $$\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± / $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $$p+p$$ p + p and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

We measure the dynamical behavior of colloidal singlets and dumbbells on an inclined magnetic moiré pattern, subject to a precessing external homogeneous magnetic field. At low external field strength single colloidal particles and dumbbells move everywhere on the pattern: at stronger external field strengths colloidal singlets and dumbbells are localized in generic locations. There are however nongeneric locations of flat channels that cross the moiré Wigner Seitz cell. In the flat channels we find gravitational driven translational and non-translational dynamic phase behavior of the colloidal singlets and dumbbells depending on the external field strength and the precession angle of the external homogeneous magnetic field.

Limb amputation often results in a change of profession or withdrawal from the workforce. Occupational rehabilitation plays a key role in assisting individuals with finding, maintaining, and advancing in employment. The aim of this review was to determine the precise number of amputations performed in Poland from January 2014 to June 2022 and to present selected available rehabilitation programs aimed at the social reintegration of individuals after amputations, with a particular focus on vocational rehabilitation. The analysis was conducted in 2 stages. First, the team reviewed data obtained from the central IT system of the National Health Fund and analyzed it. Then, a literature review was conducted using English-language databases: PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Medline, and websites searched through Google Scholar and Google. A total of 29 sources (from the years 2006-2024) out of 75 found were analyzed. Articles were searched using the following keywords: "rehabilitation programs," "amputations," "occupational rehabilitation," "disability," "vocational activation," and "rehabilitation effectiveness." A significant number of amputations are performed in Poland. Individuals who undergo such procedures can benefit from occupational rehabilitation programs that facilitate a faster return to professional activity. It is crucial to develop and implement preventive measures aimed at reducing the incidence of amputations in Poland, as well as to introduce new vocational rehabilitation programs that will enable individuals with disabilities to return to professional activity more effectively and efficiently. Ion bombardment with 30 keV Ga + ions can locally change the magnetic properties of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy ferrimagnetic Tb/Co based multilayers. The induced changes in the effective magnetization create high gradients of magnetic fields in the proximity of the perimeters of the bombarded areas. Superparamagnetic, micrometer-sized beads floating in an aqueous suspension over such a patterned structure respond to the ensuing magnetostatic energy landscape. This landscape, and its associated forces on the beads, can be controlled with a time varying, external, homogeneous magnetic field. It is shown that with a 3.37 kA/m (approx. 4.2 mT) field and switching the direction at 10 Hz frequencies the beads can be driven with average forward velocities reaching 40  μ m/s. These days, the use of natural materials is required for sustainable and consequently plus-, zero- and low-energy construction. One of the main objectives of this research was to demonstrate that pelite concrete block masonry can be a structural and thermal insulation material. In order to determine the actual thermal insulation parameters of the building partition, in situ experimental research was carried out in real conditions, taking into account the temperature distribution at different heights of the partition. Empirical measurements were made at five designated heights of the partition with temperature and humidity parameters varying over time. The described experiment was intended to verify the technical parameters of perlite concrete in terms of its thermal insulation properties as a construction material used for vertical partitions. It was shown on the basis of the results obtained that the masonry made of perlite concrete blocks with dimensions of 24 × 24.5 × 37.5 cm laid on the mounting foam can be treated as a building element that meets both the structural and thermal insulation requirements of vertical single-layer partitions. However, it is important for the material to work in a dry environment, since, as shown, a wet perlite block has twice the thermal conductivity coefficient. The results of the measurements were confirmed, for they were known from the physics of buildings, the general principles of the formation of heat and the moisture flow in the analysed masonry of a perlite block. Illustrating this regularity is shown from the course of temperature and moisture in the walls. The proposed new building material is an alternative to walls with a layer of thermal insulation made of materials such as polystyrene or wool and fits into the concept of sustainable construction, acting against climate change, reducing building operating costs, improving living and working conditions as well as fulfilling international obligations regarding environmental goals.

Global sewage sludge production is rapidly increasing, and its safe disposal is becoming an increasingly serious issue. One of the main methods of municipal sewage sludge management is based on its agricultural use. The wastewater and sewage sludge contain numerous antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and its microbiome differs significantly from the soil microbial community. The aim of the study was to assess the changes occurring in the soil microbial community and resistome after the addition of sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in central Poland, from which the sludge is used for fertilizing agricultural soils on a regular basis. This study used a high-throughput shotgun metagenomics approach to compare the microbial communities and ARGs present in two soils fertilized with sewage sludge. The two soils represented different land uses and different physicochemical and granulometric properties. Both soils were characterized by a similar taxonomic composition of the bacterial community, despite dissimilarities between soils properties. Five phyla predominated, viz. Planctomycetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Firmicutes, and they were present in comparable proportions in both soils. Network analysis revealed that the application of sewage sludge resulted in substantial qualitative and quantitative changes in bacterial taxonomic profile, with most abundant phyla being considerably depleted and replaced by Proteobacteria and Spirochaetes. In addition, the ratio of oligotrophic to copiotrophic bacteria substantially decreased in both amended soils. Furthermore, fertilized soils demonstrated greater diversity and richness of ARGs compared to control soils. The increased abundance concerned mainly genes of resistance to antibiotics most commonly used in human and animal medicine. The level of heavy metals in sewage sludge was low and did not exceed the standards permitted in Poland for sludge used in agriculture, and their level in fertilized soils was still inconsiderable., (© 2024. Fungal infections are among the most common diseases of crop plants. Various species of the Fusarium spp. are naturally prevalent and globally cause the qualitative and quantitative losses of farming commodities, mainly cereals, fruits, and vegetables. In addition, Fusarium spp. can synthesize toxic secondary metabolites-mycotoxins under high temperature and humidity conditions. Among the strategies against Fusarium spp. incidence and mycotoxins biosynthesis, the application of biological control, specifically natural plant extracts, has proved to be one of the solutions as an alternative to chemical treatments. Notably, rowanberries taken from Sorbus aucuparia are a rich source of phytochemicals, such as vitamins, carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, as well as minerals, including iron, potassium, and magnesium, making them promising candidates for biological control strategies. The study aimed to investigate the effect of rowanberry extracts obtained by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) under different conditions on the growth of Fusarium ( F. culmorum and F. proliferatum ) and mycotoxin biosynthesis. The results showed that various extracts had different effects on Fusarium growth as well as ergosterol content and mycotoxin biosynthesis. These findings suggest that rowanberry extracts obtained by the SFE method could be a natural alternative to synthetic fungicides for eradicating Fusarium pathogens in crops, particularly cereal grains. However, more research is necessary to evaluate their efficacy against other Fusarium species and in vivo applications.

Processing of cast-iron castings by machining is associated with a large amount of post-production waste in the form of cast-iron chips, which constitute up to about 5% of the weight of the entire casting. In the case of serial production, this generates large amounts of post-production waste, constituting a constantly growing scale of environmental problems. The aim of this research was to develop a simple and cheap method of utilizing post-production waste of gray cast-iron chips from the machining process for the production of small structural elements of water supply fittings. The analysis of the state of knowledge indicates that the simplest method of managing waste chips is to use them as a starting material in the process of manufacturing polymer composites. The most frequently chosen material for the matrix of polymer composites reinforced with metal powders is epoxy resin. The epoxy composite was produced by the vacuum-assisted casting method. This paper presents the results of tests of morphological, mechanical, and corrosion properties of epoxy composites filled with grey cast-iron powder with a grain size below 0.075 mm and a mass content in the composite of 65%. The composite cured at 130 °C for 90 min had the best mechanical properties. The sample cured at 130 °C for 90 min was observed to have the optimum effect, with a tensile strength of 28.35 MPa, a flexural strength of 55.4 MPa, and a compressive strength of 53.8 MPa. All tested composites were characterized by very good thermal resistance and, in comparison to gray cast iron, over 2.5 times lower weight and an over three times lower corrosion rate in the tap water environment.

Stem CO2 efflux is an important component of the carbon balance in forests. The efflux is considered to principally reflect the net result of two dominating and opposing processes: stem respiration and stem photosynthesis. In addition, transport of CO2 in xylem sap is thought to play an appreciable role in affecting the net flux. This work presents an approach to partition stem CO2 efflux among these processes using sap-flux data and CO2-exchange measurements from dark and transparent chambers placed on mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees. Seasonal changes and monthly parameters describing the studied processes were determined. Respiration contributed most to stem net CO2 flux, reaching up to 79% (considering the sum of the absolute values of stem respiration, stem photosynthesis, and flux from CO2 transported in xylem sap to be 100%) in June, when stem growth was greatest. The contribution of photosynthesis accounted for up to 13% of the stem net CO2 flux, increasing over the monitoring period. CO2 transported axially with sap flow decreased towards the end of the growing season. At a reference temperature, respiration decreased starting around midsummer, while its temperature sensitivity increased during the summer. A decline was observed for photosynthetic quantum yield around midsummer together with a decrease in light-saturation point. Topological growth control allows to produce a narrow distribution of outgrown colloidal rods with defined and adjustable length. We use an external magnetic field to assemble paramagnetic colloidal spheres into colloidal rods of a chosen length. The rods reside above a metamorphic hexagonal magnetic pattern. The periodic repetition of specific loops of the orientation of an applied external field renders paramagnetic colloidal particles and their assemblies into active bipeds that walk on the pattern. The metamorphic patterns allow the robust and controlled polymerization of single colloids to bipeds of a desired length. The colloids are exposed to this fixed external control loop that causes multiple simultaneous responses: Small bipeds and single colloidal particles interpret the external magnetic loop as an order to walk toward the active zone, where they assemble and polymerize. Outgrown bipeds interpret the same loop as an order to walk away from the active zone. The topological transition occurs solely for the growing biped and nothing is changed in the environment nor in the magnetic control loop. The study presents a comprehensive examination of changes in soil microbial functional diversity (hereafter called microbial activity) following the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in urban areas. Utilizing the Biolog® EcoPlates™ technique, the study explored variations in microbial diversity in urban soil under NBSs implementation across timespan of two years. Significant differences in microbial activity were observed between control location and those with NBS implementations, with seasonal variations playing a crucial role. NBS positively impacted soil microbial activity especially at two locations: infiltration basin and wild flower meadow showing the most substantial increase after NBS implementation. The study links rainfall levels to microbial functional diversity, highlighting the influence of climatic conditions on soil microbiome. The research investigates also the utilization of different carbon sources by soil microorganisms, shedding light on the specificity of substrate utilization across seasons and locations. The results demonstrate that NBSs implementations lead to changes in substrate utilization patterns, emphasizing the positive influence of NBS on soil microbial communities. Likewise, biodiversity indices, such as Shannon-Weaver diversity (H'), Shannon Evenness Index (E), and substrate richness index (S), exhibit significant variations in response to NBS. Notably, NBS implementation positively impacted H' and E indexes, especially in infiltration basin and wild flower meadow, underlining the benefits of NBS for enhancing microbial diversity. The obtained results demonstrated valuable insight into the dynamic interactions between NBS implementation and soil microbial activity. The findings underscore the potential of NBS to positively influence soil microbial diversity in urban environments, contributing to urban sustainability and soil health. The diversity of fungal strains is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, growth conditions and mycelium age, and the spectral features of fungal mycelia are associated with their biochemical, physiological, and structural traits. This study investigates whether intraspecific differences can be detected in two closely related entomopathogenic species, namely Cordyceps farinosa and Cordyceps fumosorosea, using ultraviolet A to shortwave infrared (UVA-SWIR) reflectance spectra. Phylogenetic analysis of all strains revealed a high degree of uniformity among the populations of both species. The characteristics resulting from variation in the species, as well as those resulting from the age of the cultures were determined. We cultured fungi on PDA medium and measured the reflectance of mycelia in the 350-2500 nm range after 10 and 17 days. We subjected the measurements to quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) to identify the minimum number of bands containing meaningful information. We found that when the age of the fungal culture was known, species represented by a group of different strains could be distinguished with no more than 3-4 wavelengths, compared to 7-8 wavelengths when the age of the culture was unknown. At least 6-8 bands were required to distinguish cultures of a known species among different age groups. Distinguishing all strains within a species was more demanding: at least 10 bands were required for C. fumosorosea and 21 bands for C. farinosa. The poor solubility of clotrimazole in the aqueous medium and the uncontrolled removal of the drug-loaded suppository content limit its effectiveness in the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis. We present here the aqueous formulations of clotrimazole in the form of non-Newtonian structured fluids, i.e. , Bingham plastic or pseudoplastic fluids constructed of hyperbranched polyglycidol, HbPGL, with a hydrophobized core with aryl groups such as phenyl or biphenyl. The amphiphilic constructs were obtained by the modification of linear units containing monohydroxyl groups with benzoyl chloride, phenyl isocyanate, and biphenyl isocyanate, while the terminal 1,2-diol groups in the shell were protected during the modification step, followed by their deprotection. The encapsulation of clotrimazole within internally hydrophobized HbPGLs using a solvent evaporation method followed by water addition resulted in structured fluids formation. Detailed Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses performed for aryl-HbPGLs with clotrimazole revealed the difference in drug compatibility among polymers. Clotrimazole in biphenyl-enriched HbPGL, unlike phenyl derivatives, was molecularly distributed in both the dry and the hydrated states, resulting in transparent formulations. The shear-thinning properties of the obtained fluid formulations make them injectable and thus suitable for the intravaginal application. Permeability tests performed with the usage of the Franz diffusion cell showed a 5-fold increase in the permeability constant of clotrimazole compared to drugs loaded in a commercially available disposable tablet and a 50-fold increase of permeability in comparison to the aqueous suspension of clotrimazole. Furthermore, the biphenyl-modified HbPGL-based drug liquid showed enhanced antifungal activity against both Candida albicans and Candida glabrata that was retained for up to 7 days, in contrast to the phenyl-HbPGL derivatives and the tablet. With their simple formulation, convenient clotrimazole/biphenyl-HbPGL formulation strategy, rheological properties, and enhanced antifungal properties, these systems are potential antifungal therapeutics for gynecological applications. This study points in the synthetic direction of improving the solubility of poorly water-soluble aryl-enriched pharmaceuticals.

In the face of severe side effects of systemic chemotherapy used in cervical cancer, topical selective drug carriers with long-lasting effects are being sought. Hydrogels are suitable platforms, but their use is problematic in the case of delivery of hydrophobic drugs with anticancer activity. Herein, hydrogels constructed of unimolecular micelles displaying enhanced solubilization of aromatic lipophilic bioactive compounds are presented. Star-shaped poly(benzyl glycidyl ether)- block -poly(glycidyl glycerol ether) with an aryl-enriched core show high encapsulation capacity of poor water-soluble nifuratel and clotrimazole. Nifuratel attained selectivity against cervical cancer cells, whereas clotrimazole preserved its original selectivity. The combination of unimolecular micelles loaded with both drugs provided synergism; however, they were still selective against cervical cancer cells. The cross-linking of drug-loaded unimolecular micelles via dynamic boronic esters provided injectable and self-healable hydrogel drug carriers also displaying synergistic anticancer activity, suitable for intravaginal administration and assuring the effective coverage of the afflicted tissue area and efficient tissue permeability with hydrophobic bioactive compounds. Here, we show that the combination of star-shaped polyether amphiphiles and boronic ester cross-linking chemistry provides a new strategy for obtaining hydrogel platforms suitable for efficient hydrophobic drug delivery.

The present study assessed the ability of Trichoderma to combat F. sporotrichioides, focusing on their antagonistic properties. Tests showed that Trichoderma effectively inhibited F. sporotrichioides mycelial growth, particularly with T. atroviride strains. In co-cultures on rice grains, Trichoderma almost completely reduced the biosynthesis of T-2 and HT-2 toxins by Fusarium. T-2 toxin-α-glucoside (T-2-3α-G), HT-2 toxin-α-glucoside (HT-2-3α-G), and HT-2 toxin-β-glucoside (HT-2-3β-G) were observed in the common culture medium, while these substances were not present in the control medium. The study also revealed unique metabolites and varying metabolomic profiles in joint cultures of Trichoderma and Fusarium, suggesting complex interactions. Background: Flavokawain B is one of the naturally occurring chalcones in the kava plant (Piper methysticum). It exhibits anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antimalarial properties. Due to its therapeutic potential, flavokawain B holds promise for the treatment of many diseases. However, due to its poor bioavailability and low aqueous solubility, its application remains limited. The attachment of a sugar unit impacts the stability and solubility of flavonoids and often determines their bioavailability and bioactivity. Biotransformation is an environmentally friendly way to improve the properties of compounds, for example, to increase their hydrophilicity and thus affect their bioavailability. Recent studies proved that entomopathogenic filamentous fungi from the genera Isaria and Beauveria can perform O-methylglycosylation of hydroxyflavonoids or O-demethylation and hydroxylation of selected chalcones and flavones., Results: In the present study, we examined the ability of entomopathogenic filamentous fungal strains of Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria caledonica, Isaria farinosa, Isaria fumosorosea, and Isaria tenuipes to transform flavokawain B into its glycosylated derivatives. The main process occurring during the reaction is O-demethylation and/or hydroxylation followed by 4-O-methylglycosylation. The substrate used was characterized by low susceptibility to transformations compared to our previously described transformations of flavones and chalcones in the cultures of the tested strains. However, in the culture of the B. bassiana KCh J1.5 and BBT, Metarhizium robertsii MU4, and I. tenuipes MU35, the expected methylglycosides were obtained with high yields. Cheminformatic analyses indicated altered physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties in the derivatives compared to flavokawain B. Pharmacological predictions suggested potential anticarcinogenic activity, caspase 3 stimulation, and antileishmanial effects., Conclusions: In summary, the study provided valuable insights into the enzymatic transformations of flavokawain B by entomopathogenic filamentous fungi, elucidating the structural modifications and predicting potential pharmacological activities of the obtained derivatives. Fusarium culmorum is a major wheat pathogen, and its secondary metabolites (mycotoxins) cause damage to plants, animals, and human health. In the era of sustainable agriculture, eco-friendly methods of prevention and control are constantly needed. The use of plant extracts as biocontrol agents has gained popularity as they are a source of active substances that play a crucial role in fighting against phytopathogens. This study evaluated the impact of Lamium album on wheat seed germination and seedling growth. In a pot experiment, the effect of L. album on wheat seedlings artificially inoculated with F. culmorum was evaluated by measuring seedling growth parameters, and by using chromatographic methods, ergosterol and mycotoxins levels were analyzed. The results showed that the phytotoxic effect of L. album flower extracts on wheat seed germination and seedling growth was concentration dependent. The radicle length was also reduced compared to the control; however, L. album did not significantly affect the dry weight of the radicle. A slight phytotoxic effect on seed germination was observed, but antifungal effects on artificially infected wheat seedlings were also confirmed with the reduction of ergosterol level and mycotoxins accumulation in the roots and leaves after 21 days of inoculation. F. culmorum DNA was identified in the control samples only. Overall, this study is a successful in planta study showing L. album flower extract protection of wheat against the pathogen responsible for Fusarium crown and root rot. The study assessed the occurrence of legally-monitored heavy metals and unmonitored antimicrobials in sludge from small, medium, large and very large municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and the predicted environmental risk and risk of resistance selection associated with sludge administration to soil. The temporal variations of the studied compounds in sludge and associated risks to soil were determined by sampling over a year. Although the highest concentrations of heavy metals were noted in sludge from the largest WWTP, i.e. from 1.50 mg/kg (mean 1.61 mg/kg) for Cd to 2188 mg/kg (mean 1332 mg/kg) for Zn, the obtained values only reached a few percent of the legal limits. The same WWTP also demonstrated lower concentrations of antimicrobials compared to the smaller ones. The highest concentrations of antimicrobials, ranging from 24.04 μg/kg for trimethoprim to 900.24 μg/kg for tetracycline, were found in the small and medium WWTPs. However, due to lack of regulations at the national and EU levels, the results cannot be compared with legal limits. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), cluster and heatmap analysis separated samples according to WWTP size. Small WWTP demonstrated correlation with antimicrobials (tetracycline, trimethoprim, clindamycin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin), while the large and very large WWTP revealed correlations with heavy metals (Cu and Cr). The obtained environmental risk quotients confirmed that the heavy metals did not present a threat, measured either as individual risk quotients (RQ env ), cumulative risk (RQ cumulative ) or risk of mixture of heavy metals (RQ mix-metals ). In the case of antimicrobials, only tetracycline demonstrated moderate RQ env , RQ cumulative and RQ mix-antimicrobials in the small WWTP sludge, with values of 0.1 to 1. Our findings highlight the importance of monitoring sewage sludge before soil application, especially from small WWTPs, to reduce the potential environmental impact of antimicrobials.
