The formation and preservation of the active phase of the catalysts at the triple-phase interface during CO2 capture and reduction is essential for improving the conversion efficiency of CO2 electroreduction toward value-added chemicals and fuels under operational conditions. Designing such ideal catalysts that can mitigate parasitic hydrogen generation and prevent active phase degradation during the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), however, remains a significant challenge. Herein, we developed an interfacial engineering strategy to build a new SnOx catalyst by invoking multiscale approaches. This catalyst features a hierarchically nanoporous structure coated with an organic F-monolayer that modifies the triple-phase interface in aqueous electrolytes, substantially reducing competing hydrogen generation (less than 5%) and enhancing CO2RR selectivity (∼90%). This rationally designed triple-phase interface overcomes the issue of limited CO2 solubility in aqueous electrolytes via proactive CO2 capture and reduction. Concurrently, we utilized pulsed square-wave potentials to dynamically recover the active phase for the CO2RR to regulate the production of C1 products such as formate and carbon monoxide (CO). This protocol ensures profoundly enhanced CO2RR selectivity (∼90%) compared with constant potential (∼70%) applied at -0.8 V (V vs RHE). We further achieved a mechanistic understanding of the CO2 capture and reduction processes under pulsed square-wave potentials via in situ Raman spectroscopy, thereby observing the potential-dependent intensity of Raman vibrational modes of the active phase and CO2RR intermediates. This work will inspire material design strategies by leveraging triple-phase interface engineering for emerging electrochemical processes, as technology moves toward electrification and decarbonization.

Abstract: Nanoporous materials are of great interest in many applications, such as catalysis, separation, and energy storage. The performance of these materials is closely related to their pore sizes, which are inefficient to determine through the conventional measurement of gas adsorption isotherms. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry has emerged as a technique highly sensitive to porosity in such materials. Nonetheless, streamlined methods to estimate pore size from NMR relaxometry remain elusive. Previous attempts have been hindered by inverting a time domain signal to relaxation rate distribution, and dealing with resulting parameters that vary in number, location, and magnitude. Here we invoke well‐established machine learning techniques to directly correlate time domain signals to BET surface areas for a set of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) imbibed with solvent at varied concentrations. We employ this series of MOFs to establish a correlation between NMR signal and surface area via partial least squares (PLS), following screening with principal component analysis, and apply the PLS model to predict surface area of various nanoporous materials. This approach offers a high‐throughput, non‐destructive way to assess porosity in c.a. one minute. We anticipate this work will contribute to the development of new materials with optimized pore sizes for various applications.

Crystallographic defects play a crucial role in cement hydration, with initial dissolution being dominated by the formation of etch pits that rely on the intersection of defects on surfaces. However, the defects present in cement particles have remained a mystery due to the lack of detailed direct observation at the atomic scale. In this study, we used scanning transmission electron microscopy to unravel the defects in alite particles at the single-atom level. Our observations identified different types of defects, including vacancies, doping, dislocations, rough surfaces, and grain boundaries. Atomic ordering in the alite crystal was further examined based on our single-atom recognition method. Our findings indicate that defects in cement particles may serve as reactive sites during the early hydration stage, facilitating the initial dissolution and providing nucleation sites for hydration products. This work provides insights into cement defect formation at the single-atom level and offers new opportunities in tuning the hydration process through defect engineering of cement particles.

To compare the allergenicity of native arginine kinase (nAK) and recombinant AK (rAK) from Scylla paramamosain and to identify the predominant allergenic domain of AK, AK was divided into 4 fragments: AK-E1 (amino acid (AA) 1–92), AK-E2 (AA 87–187), AK-E3 (AA 172–265), and AK-E4 (AA 276–357) based on the distribution of epitopes and the spatial structure of the AK molecule. The four recombinant fragments were expressed in the prokaryotic system Escherichia coli, and then nAK, rAK, and the recombinant fragments were purified. The allergenicity of recombinant proteins were evaluated using BALB/c mice. The results showed that the levels of specific antibodies in the serum and the secretion of Th2 type cytokines by the splenocytes of mice sensitized with rAK significantly increased, but the immunogenicity of rAK was weaker than that of nAK. Among the 4 fragments of AK, AK-E2 had the strongest immunogenicity. Meanwhile, rAK could stimulate RBL-2H3 cells to release β-hexokinase, but it was less effective than nAK. Among the 4 expressed fragments, AK-E2 and AK-E4 had a stronger stimulating effect on effector cells. In conclusion, the rAK expressed in the prokaryotic system showed weaker immunogenicity than nAK, and among the 4 fragments of AK, AA 87–187 has the strongest immunogenicity while AA 276–357 has the strongest immunoreactivity.

Background: Klotho is an anti-aging protein that has multiple functions and may play a key role in the pathogenesis and progression of chronic respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) is a non-invasive and novel biomarker that has the advantages of being simple, fast and reproducible. It can effectively assess the degree of airway inflammation in diseases such as asthma and COPD. Despite these insights, the relationship between serum Klotho levels and FeNO has not been explored yet. Methods: Leveraging data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2012, we investigated the correlation between FeNO and serum Klotho levels. This association was scrutinized both as continuous variables and within quartile distributions, utilizing the Kruskal-Wallis H test. The correlation between the two variables was assessed through Spearman rank analysis. Employing survey weight-adjusted linear regression models, we gauged the strength of these associations. Results: This study included 6,527 participants with a median FeNO level of 14.5 parts per billion (ppb). We found that FeNO levels varied significantly across different quartiles of Klotho protein (H = 7.985, P = 0.046). We also found a significant positive correlation between serum Klotho levels and FeNO levels in the whole population (Spearman's rho = 0.029, P = 0.019). This correlation remained significant after adjusting for covariates such as age, gender, lung function, smoking status, alcohol use, BMI, cardiovascular disease (including hypertension, heart failure, coronary heart disease, and myocardial infarction), diabetes, inflammatory markers, serum vitamin D level and BUN (P < 0.05 for all). Furthermore, this correlation was stronger at the high (K3) and super high (K4) levels of Klotho than at the low (K1) and medium (K2) levels (β = 1.979 ppb and β = 1.993 ppb for K3 and K4 vs. K1, respectively; 95% CI: 0.497 ~ 2.953 and 95% CI: 0.129 ~ 2.827, respectively; P = 0.007 and P = 0.032, respectively). The β coefficient for serum Klotho was 0.002 ppb/pg/ml. Conclusions: Our study illuminates a positive correlation between serum Klotho levels and FeNO. Tobacco target spot, caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn, induces shot-hole lesions on leaves that that significantly reduce yield and quality of tobacco. In July 2022, samples (n=5) with target spot were collected from three tobacco fields, one each in Puer (22.63°N, 100.72°E, cv. Yunyan87) and Mengzi (23.26°N, 103.36°E, cv. Yunyan87) of Yunnan province and one in Dandong (40.63°N, 124.18°E, cv. Liaoyan17) of Liaoning province, China; disease incidence in these fields was approximately 30%~40%. Initial symptoms (2- to 3-mm-diameter lesions) appeared on the middle to lower leaves, then expanded to 2 to 3 cm in diameter and developed the shot-hole appearance. Pieces of tissue (5×5 mm) were cut from the edge of lesions, surface sterilized, rinsed in sterile water, then placed on the surface of water agar (WA) and incubated at 25℃ for 2 days in the dark. Single hyphal tips were taken from fungal isolates identified as R. solani based on the morphological traits (Tsror 2010), then transferred onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) and cultured for 3 d as described above. A total of 15 pure cultures were obtained. With the exception of YN-3 (isolated from Puer), YN-62 (isolated from Mengzi) and LN-95(isolated from Dandong) strains, which exhibited hyphal fusion reaction with AG1-IB standard strain, all the other strains demonstrated hyphal fusion with AG-3 standard strain (Ogoshi 1987). Genomic DNA of these three strains were extracted by the CTAB method and ITS regions of rDNA were sequenced (White et al. 1990). The sequences were deposited in GenBank with accession No. OR770079, OR770080 and OR770082. All the three rDNA-ITS sequences exhibited 99.85% similar to AG1-IB found in GenBank, and a phylogenetic tree using a neighbor-joining method grouped the three strains within the R. solani AG-1 IB clade. Therefore, based on the hyphal fusion reaction and molecular methods, these isolates were identified as R. solani AG1-IB. To determine pathogenicity of the isolates, the healthy leaves of tobacco plants (cv. Yunyan 87) were used. Five-mm-diameter mycelial plugs of the strain on PDA were inoculated on leaves that had been previously wounded with a sterile needle, and cotton balls moistened with sterile water were used for moisturizing the inoculation sites. Ten leaves were inoculated for each strain and leaves inoculated with PDA plugs were as control. The experiment was conducted twice. All plants were incubated for 2 d at 15℃ to 25℃ and 90% relative humidity with a 12 h photoperiod/day. Irregularly shaped lesions appeared on the leaves around each of the inoculated sites, but not on control leaves. The pathogens were reisolated and confirmed be R. solani AG1-IB by hyphal fusion and molecular identification tests as previously described, thereby fulfilling Koch's postulates. It has been reported that AG-3, AG-2 (Mercado Cardenas et al. 2012), AG-5 (Wang et al. 2023) and AG-6 (Sun et al. 2022) of R. solani could cause tobacco target spot, but AG-3 is considered the main causal agent (Marleny Gonzalez et al. 2011). To our knowledge, this is the first report of AG1-IB causing tobacco target spot in China and worldwide. The AG1-IB strain has a wide host range including cabbage, mint, lettuce, beans, and rice (Gonzalez et al. 2006). The discovery poses a new challenge for the prevention and control of tobacco target spot, especially when contemplating disease management strategies such as crop rotation and fungicide treatments.

2D conjugated covalent organic frameworks (c-COFs) provide an attractive foundation as organic electrodes in energy storage devices, but their storage capability is long hindered by limited ion accessibility within densely π-π stacked interlayers. Herein, two kinds of 2D c-COFs based on dioxin and dithiine linkages are reported, which exhibit distinct in-plane configurations-fully planar and undulated layers. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals wavy square-planar networks in dithiine-bridged COF (COF-S), attributed to curved C─S─C bonds in the dithiine linkage, whereas dioxin-bridged COF (COF-O) features densely packed fully planar layers. Theoretical and experimental results elucidate that the undulated stacking within COF-S possesses an expanded layer distance of 3.8 Å and facilitates effective and rapid Li + storage, yielding a superior specific capacity of 1305 mAh g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 , surpassing that of COF-O (1180 mAh g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 ). COF-S also demonstrates an admirable cycle life with 80.4% capacity retention after 5000 cycles. As determined, self-expanded wavy-stacking geometry, S-enriched dithiine in COF-S enhances the accessibility and redox activity of Li storage, allowing each phthalocyanine core to store 12 Li + compared to 8 Li + in COF-O. Background: Noroviruses are the most frequent cause of epidemic acute viral gastroenteritis in China., Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the molecular epidemiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks and the molecular genetic features of norovirus in Zhejiang Province during 2021., Methods: First, the local Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the outbreak area conducted on-site epidemiologic investigations and collected samples from ill patients for initial testing. The general epidemiologic characteristics of the demographic information are presented through descriptive analysis. Positive samples were sent to the Microbiology Laboratory of Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention for further verification. The presence of norovirus genogroups I (GI) and II (GII), along with sapovirus, was detected. Subsequently, the specimens positive for norovirus were sequenced for genotyping purposes. Furthermore, the whole genomes of positive samples were sequenced, enabling the characterization of both nucleotide and amino acid differences within the virus. Finally, phylogenetic trees were constructed to further analyze and understand the genetic relationships among the detected viruses., Result: 227 norovirus outbreaks were reported in Zhejiang Province, China, during 2021. Schools were the main setting while January was the peak month for outbreaks. A total of 17 diverse genotypes of norovirus were identified in 2021, and GII.P16-GII.2 was the most frequent genotype (30.19%). Seven genomes (five GI.P4-GI.5 and two GII.P16-GII.2) were obtained. Although GI.P4-GI.5 is considered to be a rare genotype of norovirus, the prevalence might have been underestimated. Capsid microvariation of GII.2 displayed histo-blood group antigen binding patterns compared to the GII.2 prototype, although VP1 sequences were considered to have a minimal impact on antigenicity., Conclusion: This study revealed the diversity of norovirus strains' genotypes circulating in Zhejiang Province in 2021.
