This book examines slavery in India from the Turkish conquest of North India to the centuries of Mughal rule. It focuses on the northern Islamic regimes'treatment of slavery but not limited or determined by the actions and demands of the ruling class alone. Societies normalized the practices, and the norms were socially constituted, which included slaves'acceptance, resistance, and use of agency in the process. It shows how the transformations on the ground made the social-economic and ethical environment of slavery no longer the same over the centuries and the expansion or contraction of slavery corresponded to the structural changes and ethical developments specific to the Indian milieu.The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of South Asian studies, history and slavery.

Authoritarian Populism and the Challenges for News Journalism: A Discourse Approachis a cutting‑edge study of the practices of news journalism against the background of surging authoritarian populism.This book traces key challenges for news journalism when reporting on authoritarian populism or on topics (such as immigration and terrorism) that are typically leveraged by far‑right actors and platforms as a way of attracting media attention and boosting their popularity with national electorates. This book provides educators (including but not limited to those at university level) with data-driven insights into video-mediated interaction. Drawing on extensive research on classroom interaction from a variety of theoretical and analytical perspectives, including four years of observing online university courses that began during the Covid-19 pandemic, the author provides deep insights into video-mediated interaction by comparing direct classroom observations with data provided by teachers and students via online questionnaires. The book clarifies how the newly experienced classroom contexts differ from traditional online and blended classes, then draws on the extensive experience of video-mediated instruction in terms of teacher-learner, learner-content, and learner-learner interaction to decipher what can be challenging and promising about interacting via a screen, specifically addressing multimodal interaction. It also provides practitioners with data-driven suggestions from the perspective of teachers and learners for improving teaching and learning in modern video-based educational contexts that are consistently different from the pre-pandemic idea of e-learning. The present book examines William Carlos Williams's negotiation with cultural modes and systems of the Chinese landscape tradition in his landscape writing. Focusing on Walliams's landscape modes of landscape with(out) infused emotions, the book builds a linkage between their interactions with Chinese landscape aesthetics and shows how these conversations helped shape Williams's cross-cultural landscape poetics. The exploration of Williams's experiment with the Chinese serene interplay of self and landscape, the interfusion of scene and emotion, an idea of seeing from the perspective of Wang Guowei's theory of jingjie, and the poetic space of frustration and completion in the context of space and human geography, expand the understanding of a cross-cultural landscape tradition developed by Williams through bringing into focus the convergence of East-West poetics.
