Organophosphate insecticide spray poses potential threat of contamination of environmental components their accumulation in aquatic organisms. Although various physiological deficits associated with their exposure in fishes are documented, yet their retention in their edible muscle tissues has been poorly studied. In this context, the study was undertaken to ascertain the bioaccumulation of two organophosphate insecticide compounds (dimethoate and chlorpyrifos) in the muscles of juvenile Cyprinus carpio. The study could provide insight into the risks to human health associated with consuming contaminated fish flesh. The fishes exposed to various concentrations of dimethoate and chlorpyrifos in-vivo for 96 to ascertain the uptake and retention of these insecticides in the muscle. Results indicated that fish muscles accumulated the residues at all the concentrations with the recovery of 2.99% (0.032 ppm) of dimethoate exposed to LC50 concentrations. In contrast, the chlorpyrifos residues were found Below the Detection Level (BDL) in the fishes exposed to LC50 concentrations. The percentage bioaccumulation of dimethoate in fish muscle was 88.10%, and that of chlorpyrifos was BDL. The bio-concentration factor was dose-dependent and increased with increasing doses of both insecticides. The study invites attention to human health risk assessment in the regions where contaminated fish are consumed without scientific supervision.

Abstract Fast neutron beams (E $$_n > $$ n > 1 MeV) are of relevance for many scientific and industrial applications. This paper explores fast neutron production using a TANDEM accelerator at the Legnaro National Laboratories, via an energetic ion beam (90 MeV $$^{14}N$$ 14 N ) onto a lithium target. The high energy models for nuclear collision of FLUKA foresee large neutron yields for reactions of this kind. The experiment aimed at validating the expected neutron yields from FLUKA simulations, using two separate and independent set-ups: one based on the multi-foil activation technique, and the other on the time of flight technique, by using liquid scintillator detectors. The results of the experiment show clear agreement of the measured spectra with the FLUKA simulations, both in the shape and the magnitude of the neutron flux at the measured positions. The neutron spectrum is centered around the 8 MeV range with mild tails, and a maximum neutron energy spanning up to 50 MeV. These advantageous results provide a starting point in the development of fast neutron beams based on high energy ion beams from medium-sized accelerator facilities.

Background: Dimensional conceptualization of personality pathology may be useful to describe and understand the nature of different manifestations of personality pathology, including malignant narcissism. Recently, a sound scoring procedure for malignant narcissism (i.e., MNARC index) based on the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 trait scores was proposed. The present study aimed at providing further evidence of the reliability and validity of the MNARC index in a sample of community-dwelling adults and in a sample of psychotherapy adult participants. Methods: Community-dwelling participants (N = 288; 59.4% female; mean age = 32.69 years), and psychotherapy participants (N = 168; 58.3% female; mean age = 34.52 years), were administered the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 and Five Factor Narcissism Inventory-Short Form. Moreover, community-dwelling adults completed the Machiavellianism Inventory-Version IV, Triarchic Psychopathy Measure, and Self-Report of Delinquency Scale; rather, clinical participants were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Personality Disorders, Clinician-Administered Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Disorder Index, Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, Aggression Questionnaire, and Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders Module I. Results: The MNARC index showed adequate reliability in both samples, and MNARC index mean score significantly discriminated clinical participants from non-clinical participants; moreover, according to exploratory graph analysis, the 11 PID-5 scale weighted scores shaped a highly coherent personality profile. In the community sample MNARC index was significantly closer to grandiose narcissism than to vulnerable narcissism, as well as to Machiavellianism and even psychopathy. In multiple regression analysis, MNARC index, showed unique, positive, significant and non-negligible contribution to explaining the variation in all social deviance dimensions. Among psychotherapy participants, exploratory graph analysis findings suggested that MNARC index clustered together with histrionic personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder symptom counts, as well as narcissistic grandiosity. Notably, we observed positive and significant associations between MNARC index, and physical aggression, impairment in personality functioning, and self-harming behaviors, respectively. Conclusions: Confirming and extending previous data on the MNARC index, our findings supported the reliability and validity of the MNARC index. Our results expanded our empirical knowledge of malignant narcissism, while providing additional support to the possibility to rely on the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 for assessing constructs grounded in different theoretical perspectives. Although our findings should be considered in the light of several limitations (e.g., non-random nature of our sampling strategy; cross-sectional data), our results may be useful in improving our knowledge of narcissistic features among community and clinical participants.

Cancer remains a leading cause of death, with increasing incidence. Conventional treatments offer limited efficacy and cause significant side effects, hence novel drugs with improved pharmacological properties and safety are required. Silvestrol (SLV) is a flavagline derived from some plants of the Aglaia genus that has shown potent anticancer effects, warranting further study. Despite its efficacy in inhibiting the growth of several types of cancer cells, SLV is characterized by an unfavorable pharmacokinetics that hamper its use as a drug. A consistent research over the recent years has led to develop novel SLV derivatives with comparable pharmacodynamics and an ameliorated pharmacokinetic profile, demonstrating potential applications in the clinical management of cancer. This comprehensive review aims to highlight the most recent data available on SLV and its synthetic derivatives, addressing their pharmacological profile and therapeutic potential in cancer treatment. A systematic literature review of both in vitro and in vivo studies focusing on anticancer effects, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics of these compounds is presented. Overall, literature data highlight that rationale chemical modifications of SLV are critical for the development of novel drugs with high efficacy on a broad variety of cancers and improved bioavailability in vivo. Nevertheless, SLV analogues need to be further studied to better understand their mechanisms of action, which can be partially different to SLV. Furthermore, clinical research is still required to assess their efficacy in humans and their safety.

Recently, there has been an increasing demand for medicinal plants to control diseases for good health and well-being, as primary health facilities are inadequate in certain populations to cure infections. Since synthetic medicines are toxic to humans and other animals, the present research is thus focused on using traditional medicine for treating various ailments as they are harmless. Based on the above facts, the current study was conducted to assay the antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-cholinesterase, anti-oxidant, anti-quorum sensing, and anti-antibiotic resistance modifying effect of extracts of Cyperus esculentus. This study found 37 and 30 chemicals in butanol and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts using a gas chromatograph mass spectrophotometer (GC-MS). Most active compounds identified were benzofuran, 2,3-dihydro-, 1,2,3-benzenetriol, 3-bornanone, oxime and oleic acid by extracts of butanol whereas dichloromethane extracted three major active compounds (2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-, 4H-pyran-4-one 3-deoxy-d-mannoic lactone and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural). Both dichloromethane and butanol extracts showed the highest antimicrobial activity. Compared to aqueous extracts, dichloromethane, and butanol showed excellent anti-diabetic anti-cholinesterase activities and inhibited virulence factors regulated by quorum sensing (QS). Anti-oxidants increased in solvent extracts (DCM and butanol) compared to aqueous extracts. Results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transmission Infrared (FTIR) indicated damage to the cell membrane of S. aureus by the formation of pits and breakage in functional groups exposed to the extracts of butanol and dichloromethane compared to aqueous extracts. The above results confirmed that C. esculentus can be an alternative medicine for treating diseases.

Organophosphates constitute a major class of pesticides widely employed in agriculture to manage insect pests. Their toxicity is attributed to their ability to inhibit the functioning of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an essential enzyme for normal nerve transmission. Organophosphates, especially chlorpyrifos, have been a key component of the integrated pest management (IPM) in onions, effectively controlling onion maggot Delia antiqua, a severe pest of onions. However, the growing concerns over the use of this insecticide on human health and the environment compelled the need for an alternative organophosphate and a potential microbial agent for bioremediation to mitigate organophosphate pesticide pollution. In the present study, chloropyrifos along with five other organophosphate insecticides, phosmet, primiphos-methyl, isofenphos, iodofenphos and tribuphos, were screened against the target protein AChE of D. antiqua using molecular modeling and docking techniques. The results revealed that iodofenphos showed the best interaction, while tribuphos had the lowest interaction with the AChE based on comparative binding energy values. Further, protein-protein interaction analysis conducted using the STRING database and Cytoscap software revealed that AChE is linked with a network of 10 different proteins, suggesting that the function of AChE is disrupted through interaction with insecticides, potentially leading to disruption within the network of associated proteins. Additionally, an in silico study was conducted to predict the binding efficiency of two organophosphate degrading enzymes, organophosphohydrolase (OpdA) from Agrobacterium radiobacter and Trichoderma harzianum paraoxonase 1 like (ThPON1-like) protein from Trichoderma harzianum, with the selected insecticides. The analysis revealed their potential to degrade the pesticides, offering a promising alternative before going for cumbersome onsite remediation.

Bioelectric signal classification is a flourishing area of biomedical research, however conducting this research in a clinical setting can be difficult to achieve. The lack of inexpensive acquisition hardware can limit researchers from collecting and working with real-time data. Furthermore, hardware requiring direct connection to a computer can impose restrictions on typically mobile clinical settings for data collection. Here, we present an open-source ADS1299-based bioelectric signal acquisition system with wireless capability suitable for mobile data collection in clinical settings. This system is based on the ADS_BP and BioPatRec, both open-source bioelectric signal acquisition hardware and MATLAB-based pattern recognition software, respectively. We provide 3D-printable housing enabling the hardware to be worn by users during experiments and demonstrate the suitability of this platform for real-time signal acquisition and classification. In conjunction, these developments provide a unified hardware-software platform for a cost of around ${\$}$ 150 USD. This device can enable researchers and clinicians to record bioelectric signals from non-disabled or motor-impaired individuals in laboratory or clinical settings, and to perform offline or real-time intent classification for the control of robotic and virtual devices.

Sensorimotor impairment is a prevalent condition requiring effective rehabilitation strategies. This study introduces a novel wearable device for Mindful Sensorimotor Training (MiSMT) designed for sensory and motor rehabilitation. Our MiSMT device combines motor training using myoelectric pattern recognition along sensory training using two tactile displays. This device offers a comprehensive solution, integrating electromyography and haptic feedback, lacking in existing devices. The device features eight electromyography channels, a rechargeable battery, and wireless Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity for seamless communication with a computer or mobile device. Its flexible material allows for adaptability to various body parts, ensuring ease of use in diverse patients. The two tactile displays, with 16 electromagnetic actuators each, provide touch and vibration sensations up to 250 Hz. In this proof-of-concept study, we show improved two-point discrimination after 5 training sessions in participants with intact limbs (p=0.047). We also demonstrated successful acquisition, processing, and decoding of myoelectric signals in offline and online evaluations. In conclusion, the MiSMT device presents a promising tool for sensorimotor rehabilitation by combining motor execution and sensory training benefits. Further studies are required to assess its effectiveness in individuals with sensorimotor impairments. Integrating mindful sensory and motor training with innovative technology can enhance rehabilitation outcomes and improve the quality of life for those with sensorimotor impairments.

Optimizing traffic dynamics in an evolving transportation landscape is crucial, particularly in scenarios where autonomous vehicles (AVs) with varying levels of autonomy coexist with human-driven cars. While optimizing Reinforcement Learning (RL) policies for such scenarios is becoming more and more common, little has been said about realistic evaluations of such trained policies. This paper presents an evaluation of the effects of AVs penetration among human drivers in a roundabout scenario, considering both quantitative and qualitative aspects. In particular, we learn a policy to minimize traffic jams (i.e., minimize the time to cross the scenario) and to minimize pollution in a roundabout in Milan, Italy. Through empirical analysis, we demonstrate that the presence of AVs can reduce time and pollution levels. Furthermore, we qualitatively evaluate the learned policy using a cutting-edge cockpit to assess its performance in near-real-world conditions. To gauge the practicality and acceptability of the policy, we conduct evaluations with human participants using the simulator, focusing on a range of metrics like traffic smoothness and safety perception. In general, our findings show that human-driven vehicles benefit from optimizing AVs dynamics. Also, participants in the study highlight that the scenario with 80% AVs is perceived as safer than the scenario with 20%. The same result is obtained for traffic smoothness perception.

Abstract In taste disorders, the key to a correct diagnosis and an adequate treatment is an objective assessment. Compared to psychophysical tests, EEG-derived gustatory event-related potentials (gERP) could be used as a less biased measure. However, the responses identified using conventional time-domain averaging show a low signal-to-noise ratio. This study included 44 patients with dysgeusia and 59 healthy participants, who underwent a comprehensive clinical examination of gustatory function. gERPs were recorded in response to stimulation with two concentrations of salty solutions, which were applied with a high precision gustometer. Group differences were examined using gERP analyzed in the canonical time domain and with Time–Frequency Analyses (TFA). Dysgeusic patients showed significantly lower scores for gustatory chemical and electrical stimuli. gERPs failed to show significant differences in amplitudes or latencies between groups. However, TFA showed that gustatory activations were characterized by a stronger power in controls than in patients in the low frequencies (0.1–4 Hz), and a higher desynchronization in the alpha-band (8–12 Hz). Hence, gERPs reflect the altered taste sensation in patients with dysgeusia. TFA appears to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio commonly present when using conventional time-domain averaging, and might be of assistance for the diagnosis of dysgeusia.

Zinc deficiency is one of the most widespread nutritional problems, affecting nearly one-third of the world population. In addition, it is known that zinc deficiency not only reduces crop yield but also its quality. The effect of different methods of zinc application on the growth, yield, and quality of safflower seeds under regular irrigation and interruption of irrigation from flowering to harvest (82 and 80 DAS in the first and second years, respectively) was evaluated. Zinc sulfate was applied in both soil and foliar methods. The zinc sulfate treatments include no zinc sulfate, soil application of 20, 40, and 60 kg ha−1 at the planting stage; spraying 2.5, 5, and 7.5 g L−1 in the rosette stage; and spraying 2.5, 5, and 7.5 g L−1 in the flowering stage. The end-season drought caused a decrease in the chlorophyll index, leaf area index, relative water content, plant height, yield components, biological yield, seed yield, harvest index, seed oil content, oil harvest index, and seed element content compared to regular irrigation. The decrease in yield occurred with a decrease in the capitol number and diameter, seed number per capitol, and 1000-seed weight. The severity of the damage of the end-season drought stress in the second year was higher than in the first year due to the higher temperatures and the decrease in the rainfall. In both years, the application of zinc sulfate in different ways had an increasing effect on the studied traits in both normal and stress conditions. The application of zinc sulfate reduced the negative effects of unfavorable environmental conditions and improved the yield and nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and iron element content in the seed. In both application methods of zinc sulfate, the increment in the zinc sulfate concentration decreased the seed phosphorus content. However, the phosphorous content was more than that of the treatment of non-zinc application. The application of zinc increased the biological, seed, and oil yield of the treated plants, but the seed and oil yield were more affected. This effect was shown in the seed and oil harvest index increment. Under regular irrigation, higher concentrations of zinc sulfate enhanced plant performance, but under stress conditions, medium and lower concentrations were more effective. The highest 1000-seed weight and potassium and zinc content were obtained by spraying zinc sulfate at 5 g L−1 in the flowering stage under normal irrigation conditions. A comparison of the two methods of applying zinc sulfate showed that foliar spraying was more effective than soil application in improving the seed yield. The soil application is more effective on biological yield than seed yield.

Salt stress is one of the most damaging environmental stresses of recent times and poses a significant threat to food security. Here, we conducted an experimental study over two consecutive years (2022–2023) to evaluate the physiological and biochemical characteristics of kidney beans. The study used a randomized complete block design with 4 replications (n = 4). The experiment included three levels of salicylic acid (SA): SA0 (0 mM), SA0.5 (0.5 mM) and SA1 (1 mM). The study also used biochar in four levels, without biochar as the control treatment (B0), regular biochar (Rb) by 2.5 % per soil weight, modified biochar with phosphoric acid (PA) by 1.25 % per soil weight, and modified biochar with sulfuric acid (Sb) by 1.25 % per soil weight. Additionally, salt stress (SS) was induced using NaCl in three levels, SS0 (distilled water), SS4 (4 4 dS m−1), and SS8 (8 dS m−1). The results showed that salt stress, biochar, and salicylic acid significantly affected the measured parameters. Salt stress (SS4 and SS8) negatively affected the measured parameters compared to the control. However, the application of biochar and salicylic acid regulated the alleviation of the impact of salt stress. Under SS4, the application of Rb along with SA1 resulted in the highest value of proline content. The highest enzymatic activity of catalase was observed due to the use of PA in combination with SA0.5 under non-saline soil conditions. The use of PA under SS8 increased the hydrogen peroxide and caused the highest activity, while the lowest activity was obtained under non-saline soil conditions with the application of Sb. In the first year of the experiment, it was found that the use of SA1 without biochar under non-stress conditions resulted in the highest levels of malondialdehyde. Likewise, in the second year, the highest malondialdehyde activity was observed by applying Rb and SA1 under SS8. The research concludes that kidney bean plants are significantly impacted by salt stress, which affects their biochemical characteristics. Nonetheless, the combined application of biochar and salicylic acid showed promise in addressing these challenges. This approach could be particularly effective in managing salinity issues in arid and semi-arid regions, highlighting the potential of biochar and salicylic acid for improving plant resilience under such conditions.

Globally, biotic factors like insect pests and diseases as well as abiotic factors like fire, windstorms, and droughts influence the global forest ecosystem. Wood-boring pests (WBPs) pose a considerable threat to forest ecosystems worldwide owing to their capacity of remaining unnoticed during early stages, resulting in vast and pervasive infestations during later stages, eventually resulting in significant tree death. Therefore, it is crucial to promptly and effectively treat early-stage WBPs by timely detection. The prompt detection of WBPs requires the use of advanced and effective methods, such as remote sensing. This paper provides an overview of the many uses of several remote sensing devices, platforms, and detection algorithms in the context of monitoring WBPs infestations. Modern lightweight sensors such as light detection and ranging (LiDAR), hyperspectral imagers, thermal cameras, and radio detection and ranging (Radar) combined with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with versatile capabilities offer a comprehensive and effective method for gathering data. The purpose of this study is to examine the current capabilities, limits, and potential future advancements in accurately and promptly identifying WBPs.

Gamma-oryzanol (ORY), found in rice (Oryza sativa L.), is a mixture of ferulic acid esters with triterpene alcohols, well-known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Our past research demonstrated its positive impact on cognitive function in adult mice, influencing synaptic plasticity and neuroprotection. In this study, we explored whether ORY can exert neuro-differentiating effects by using different experimental models. For this purpose, chemical characterization identified four components that are most abundant in ORY. In human neuroblastoma cells, we showed ORY’s ability to stimulate neurite outgrowth, upregulating the expression of GAP43, BDNF, and TrkB genes. In addition, ORY was found to guide adult mouse hippocampal neural progenitor cells (NPCs) toward a neuronal commitment. Microinjection of ORY in zebrafish Tg (-3.1 neurog1:GFP) amplified neurog1-GFP signal, islet1, and bdnf mRNA levels. Zebrafish nrf2a and nrf2b morphants (MOs) were utilized to assess ORY effects in the presence or absence of Nrf2. Notably, ORY’s ability to activate bdnf was nullified in nrf2a-MO and nrf2b-MO. Furthermore, computational analysis suggested ORY’s single components have different affinities for the Keap1-Kelch domain. In conclusion, although more in-depth studies are needed, our findings position ORY as a potential source of bioactive molecules with neuro-differentiating potential involving the Nrf2 pathway.

This work focuses on Cistus monspeliensis L. aerial parts (AP) and roots (R) extracts, investigating the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential of the two organs in comparison. At dosages between 1.56 and 6.25 µg/mL, both extracts showed a protective effect against LPS inflammatory stimulus on a macrophage cell line (RAW 264.7). Interestingly, only R was able to significantly reduce both IL-1β and IL-6 mRNA gene expression in the presence of LPS. Moreover, the treatment of a neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y) with AP and R at 6.25 µg/mL increased the cell survival rate by nearly 20% after H2O2 insult. However, only R promoted mitochondria survival, exhibited a significantly higher production of ATP and a higher activity of the enzyme catalase than the control. Both AP and R had similar primary metabolites; in particular, they both contained 1-O-methyl-epi-inositol. Labdane and methoxylated flavonoids were the most characteristic compounds of AP, while R contained mainly catechins, gallic acid, and pyrogallol derivatives. Considering the importance of elemental composition in plants, the inorganic profile of AP and R was also investigated and compared. No potentially toxic elements, such as Pb, were detected in any sample.

Accurate accident reconstruction requires the knowledge of the mass properties of vehicles, namely the centre of gravity location, the mass and the inertia tensor. Such data are seldom available, especially in case of newly produced electric vehicles. In this paper, vehicle inertia measurements, performed at Politecnico di Milano, refer to a number of electric vehicles. In addition to the “simple” measurement of vehicle inertia, measured mass properties are analysed to derive the proper empirical formulae for the estimation of the centre of gravity height and the moments of inertia. Both internal combustion and electric vehicles are considered. Data show a significant difference in the mass properties of the two types of vehicles. The proposed formulae can be effectively employed to quickly obtain a reasonable estimation of the mass properties of any vehicle. The results show that electric vehicles are characterised by higher values of mass with respect to internal combustion vehicles, but they present a lower centre of gravity location and proportionally lower values of the moments of inertia.

The salivary protein, Gustin/carbonic anhydrase VI, has been described as a trophic factor responsible for the growth of taste buds. We found, in a genetically homogeneous population, that the polymorphism rs2274333 (A/G) of the Gustin gene is crucial for the full functionality of the protein and is associated with taste sensitivity. However, other studies have failed to find this evidence. Here, we verified if Gustin gene methylation can affect the salivary levels of the protein, also concerning the polymorphism rs2274333 and PROP bitter responsiveness. The Gustin gene methylation profiling and the quantification of the Gustin salivary levels were determined in sixty-six volunteers genotyped for the polymorphism rs2274333 (A/G) (Ser90Gly in the protein sequence). The fungiform papillae density was also determined. The results confirm our earlier observations by showing that AA genotypes had a greater density of fungiform taste papillae, whereas the GG genotypes showed a lower density. We also found variations in the protein levels in the three genotype groups and an inverse relationship between Gustin gene methylation and the salivary levels of the protein, mostly evident in AA and ST volunteers, i.e., in volunteers who would be carriers of the functional isoform of the protein. These findings could justify the conflicting data in the literature.

The sense of smell plays an important role in influencing the eating habits of individuals and consequently, their body weight, and its impairment has been associated with modified eating behaviors and malnutrition problems. The inter-individual variability of olfactory function depends on several factors, including genetic and physiological ones. In this study, we evaluated the role of the Kv1.3 channel genotype and age, as well as their mutual relationships, on the olfactory function and BMI of individuals divided into young, adult and elderly groups. We assessed olfactory performance in 112 healthy individuals (young n = 39, adult n = 36, elderly n = 37) based on their TDI olfactory score obtained through the Sniffin’ Sticks test and their BMI. Participants were genotyped for the rs2821557 polymorphism of the human gene encoding Kv1.3 channels, the minor C allele of which was associated with a decreased sense of smell and higher BMIs compared to the major T allele. The results show that TT homozygous subjects obtained higher TDI olfactory scores and showed lower BMIs than CC homozygous subjects, in all age groups considered. Furthermore, the positive effect of the T allele on olfactory function and BMI decreased with increasing age. The contribution of the genetic factor is less evident with advancing age, while the importance of the age factor is compensated for by genetics. These results show that genetic and physiological factors such as age act to balance each other.

The neutron Time-of-Flight (TOF) research facility at CERN, n_TOF, has been a pioneering platform for neutron cross-section measurements since its inception in 2001. It boasts three distinct experimental areas, each tailored to address a specific range of neutron energies. This paper delves into the intricacies of the n_TOF facility, including its recent upgrade during the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) at CERN. Additionally, it highlights the key characteristics of the detectors employed for capture and fission cross-section measurements, paving the way for future research endeavors.

Chromium is a very relevant element regarding criticality safety in nuclear reactors because of its presence in stainless steel, an important structural material. Currently, there are serious discrepancies between the different evaluations regarding the neutron capture cross sections of 50Cr and 53Cr, most probably related to the difficulty of reducing and then estimating the very large neutron scattering effects on the shape of the resonances. In this context, there is a recent entry in the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) High Priority Request List (HPRL) to measure these reactions between 1 and 100 keV with an accuracy of 8-10%. In response to this request, we have performed a time-of-flight experiment at CERN n_TOF (Switzerland) and a complementary activation experimenton 50Crat30and90keVatCNAHiSPANoS(Spain).Theexperiments are presented herein, together with a discussion on the quality of the preliminary data and the results to be expected.

The experimental setup of the new measurement of 239Pu fission and capture cross-section in the n_TOF time-of-flight facility at CERN is presented. The measurement aims to address the needs and demands of nuclear data users. The experiment incorporates an innovative fast Fission Fragment Detector and the n_TOF Total Absorption Calorimeter, enabling the implementation of the fission tagging technique. Preliminary results exhibit the robust performance of the detector systems, along with the high quality of the new 239Pu samples. These samples were exclusively produced for this measurement by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Geel.

The effect of three levels of salinity on physio-biochemical traits in 10 Alcea rosea (hollyhock) varieties were evaluated. It was observed that salt stress increased both the total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) in some varieties and decreased them in others. The greatest increases in both TPC and TFC were recorded in the Saman variety (104% and 62%, respectively) when cultivated under severe salt stress, indicating that this is the most salt-tolerant variety amongst those tested. The most abundant phenolic compound recorded was ellagic acid, and the phenolic compounds that showed the greatest increases in concentration due to salt stress were p-coumaric acid (87% in the Isfahan variety) and chlorogenic acid (142% in the Mahallat variety). Salt stress was also shown to decrease the production of diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) in all varieties. The highest concentration of DPPH (133%) was recorded in the Shiraz 1 variety, grown under conditions of severe salt stress. Salt stress also increased the mucilage content present in the petals, leaves, and seeds of some of the selected varieties. These data suggest that the selection of salt-tolerant varieties of hollyhock for direct cultivation or for use in future breeding programs is feasible.

Asymptotic giant branch stars are responsible for the production of most of the heavy isotopes beyond Sr observed in the solar system. Among them, isotopes shielded from the r-process contribution by their stable isobars are defined as s-only nuclei. For a long time the abundance of ^{204}Pb, the heaviest s-only isotope, has been a topic of debate because state-of-the-art stellar models appeared to systematically underestimate its solar abundance. Besides the impact of uncertainties from stellar models and galactic chemical evolution simulations, this discrepancy was further obscured by rather divergent theoretical estimates for the neutron capture cross section of its radioactive precursor in the neutron-capture flow, ^{204}Tl (t_{1/2}=3.78  yr), and by the lack of experimental data on this reaction. We present the first ever neutron capture measurement on ^{204}Tl, conducted at the CERN neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF, employing a sample of only 9 mg of ^{204}Tl produced at the Institute Laue Langevin high flux reactor. By complementing our new results with semiempirical calculations we obtained, at the s-process temperatures of kT≈8  keV and kT≈30  keV, Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) of 580(168) mb and 260(90) mb, respectively. These figures are about 3% lower and 20% higher than the corresponding values widely used in astrophysical calculations, which were based only on theoretical calculations. By using the new ^{204}Tl MACS, the uncertainty arising from the ^{204}Tl(n,γ) cross section on the s-process abundance of ^{204}Pb has been reduced from ∼30% down to +8%/-6%, and the s-process calculations are in agreement with the latest solar system abundance of ^{204}Pb reported by K. Lodders in 2021.

^{140}Ce(n,γ) is a key reaction for slow neutron-capture (s-process) nucleosynthesis due to being a bottleneck in the reaction flow. For this reason, it was measured with high accuracy (uncertainty ≈5%) at the n_TOF facility, with an unprecedented combination of a high purity sample and low neutron-sensitivity detectors. The measured Maxwellian averaged cross section is up to 40% higher than previously accepted values. Stellar model calculations indicate a reduction around 20% of the s-process contribution to the Galactic cerium abundance and smaller sizeable differences for most of the heavier elements. No variations are found in the nucleosynthesis from massive stars.
