Abstract

Research Summary: This article examines a firm's investment in the general skills of contract workers in flexible work arrangements. It theorizes that this investment may prolong a productive firm‐worker collaboration even when workers' mobility barriers are low. It also proposes that achieving such benefits requires that the firm frames the relational benefits of the investments both to managers and workers. Such a "relational framing" mitigates worker concerns about subsequent productivity demands and manager concerns about worker mobility. Experimental and non‐experimental studies conducted in a multinational cosmetics direct sales company support the theory. Investments in the general skills of workers—even those in flexible work arrangements—can benefit both firms and workers by deepening the firm‐worker relationship while increasing value creation. Managerial Summary: Should companies train workers in general skills if the workers can easily leave and transfer productivity gains to competing firms? A common answer to this question is "no," especially when targeting workers hired under flexible arrangements, such as gig workers and direct sales representatives. This article offers a different perspective. It predicts that these investments signal a company's commitment to nurture workers' development. In turn, workers reciprocate by prolonging a more productive collaboration. Training thus benefits workers and companies. Using relational terms to frame training programs enables the promotion by managers of training opportunities, and uptake by workers. This framing overcomes managerial concerns about worker exit and worker concerns about subsequent productivity demands. Abstract

The article highlights Natura & Co., a Brazilian cosmetics group, as an example of a stakeholder-oriented corporation addressing climate change. Natura's approach involves aligning stakeholder interests to address environmental issues, particularly in relation to the Amazon rainforest. The company works with Amazonian communities to source ingredients for their products while promoting forest preservation. They establish associations or cooperatives with community leaders to set terms of sale and ensure sustainable harvesting practices. Natura's efforts have led to the development of sustainable markets, increased profitability, and the empowerment of Indigenous suppliers. Abstract

We conduct a theory-guided review of the literatures on public–private partnerships and grand challenges (GCs). We adopt an organization design approach to review and identify constructs in public–private collaborations (PPCs) that address societal challenges. Our review identifies the complexities of organizing to tackle GCs, highlights the plurality of organizational forms in PPCs, and explores organizational design considerations in these partnerships. Given the elevated role of private actors in these collaborations, our review provides a new understanding of how they can shape a private-public interface that is robust to the scale and scope of global problems. This leads to a rich research agenda on when, why, and how public and private collaborations matter, and their implications for addressing societal challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. Solving Societal Grand Challenges: A Debate and Future Directions.

Abstract

Despite increasing attention of management scholars to the study of societal grand challenges and the progress made with promoting sustainability programs in the private sector, societal challenges such as economic inequality, public health hazards, climate change, and social divide, have worsened. The purpose of this symposium is to bring together leading scholars to engage in a debate and discuss their views and research concerning established and emerging approaches in management research for solving societal grand challenges. The panelists will identify advantages, limitations and contingencies of focused change interventions and broad system changes as well as debate the private versus public responsibilities for solving societal grand challenges, while considering new forms of economic systems and organizational governance. Thus, the panelists will share diverse views on the topic and deliberate with the audience about emerging perspectives, practices, and promising avenues for future research on solutions to societal challenges. 10. Incumbent Incentives in Response to Entry

Abstract

How should an incumbent respond to the arrival of an entrant? A long-standing literature documents a host of potential responses, but little work explores when each strategy will be more or less effective. This paper develops a model of incumbent-entrant competition between vertically and horizontally differentiated firms and applies that model to understand the incentives that shape an incumbent’s response to entry and ultimately, long-run profits. Analysis reveals the conditions under which an incumbent facing the full strategy space of possible exogenous entrants has incentive to attack an entrant and conditions where the incumbent has incentive to retreat. By viewing the incumbent and entrant in terms of their level of vertical and horizontal differentiation, this paper offers a unified view of prior work that generates insights about incumbent responses to entry that have been underappreciated.
