Abstract

• Hyperoxia immediately lowered PSII activity under sub-saturating and saturating light in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. • Hyperoxia stimulated ROS production from PSII, as well as the Mehler reaction from PSI under saturating light. • Flavodiiron proteins prevented PSI-mediated Mehler reaction, but not ROS production from PSII in the light. • Lack of flavodiiron proteins led to lower PSII activity under sub-saturating and saturating light.
