Abstract

Salinity is one of the substantial threats to plant productivity and could be escorted by other stresses such as heat and drought. It impairs critical biological processes, such as photosynthesis, energy, and water/nutrient acquisition, ultimately leading to cell death when stress intensity becomes uncured. Therefore, plants deploy several proper processes to overcome such hostile circumstances. Grapevine is one of the most important crops worldwide that is relatively salt-tolerant and preferentially cultivated in hot and semi-arid areas. One of the most applicable strategies for sustainable viticulture is using salt-tolerant rootstock such as Ruggeri (RUG). The rootstock showed efficient capacity of photosynthesis, ROS detoxification, and carbohydrate accumulation under salinity. The current study utilized the transcriptome profiling approach to identify the molecular events of RUG throughout a regime of salt stress followed by a recovery procedure. The data showed progressive changes in the transcriptome profiling throughout salinity, underpinning the involvement of a large number of genes in transcriptional reprogramming during stress. Our results established a considerable enrichment of the biological process GO-terms related to salinity adaptation, such as signaling, hormones, photosynthesis, carbohydrates, and ROS homeostasis. Among the battery of molecular/cellular responses launched upon salinity, ROS homeostasis plays the central role of salt adaptation.

Abstract

Due to their distinctive security characteristics, all-solid-state batteries are seen as a potential technology for the upcoming era of energy storage. The flexibility of nanomaterials shows enormous potential for the advancement of all-solid-state batteries' exceptional power and energy storage capacities. These batteries might be applied in many areas such as large-scale energy storage for power grids, as well as in the creation of foldable and flexible electronics, and portable gadgets. The most difficult aspect of creating a comprehensive nanoscale all-solid-state battery assembly is the task of decreasing the particle size of the solid electrolyte while maintaining its excellent ionic conductivity. Materials possessing nanoscale structural features and a substantial electrochemically active surface area have the potential to significantly enhance power characteristics and the cycle life. This might bring about substantial changes to existing energy storage models. The primary objective of this research is to summarize the latest advancements in utilizing nanomaterials for energy harvesting in various all-solid-state battery assemblies. This study examines the most complex solid–solid interfaces of all-solid-state batteries, as well as feasible methods for implementing nanomaterials in such interfaces. Abstract

Nationalism in Asia and Africa is generally understood as a modern secular movement for independence. However, this idea is contestable. Analysing nationalism in India and the Sudan, this paper argues that nationalist movements there actually had their origins in Islamic religious resistance against the British colonial rule preceding the development of secular nationalism. Depending on political development following the colonial advancement, the secular elite‐led nationalism also largely fostered religious communal nationalism in India and the Sudan. This substantiates the argument that religion never ceased to play the most central role in the nationalist movements in India and the Sudan. Following an inter‐continental approach to study nationalism, this article explores exclusively the connection between religion and the first ever generic nationalist movements in the context of colonialism in India and the Sudan. Abstract

The present study aimed to develop a suitable method for the production of good quality shidol at the Floodplain Substation, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), Santahar, Bogura, Bangladesh. For this purpose, an improved quality shidol was prepared following scientific methods by BFRI, while traditional shidol was collected from Rangpur, Kurigram, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Bogura, Nilphamary, Syedpur region. In the present study, proximate composition, biochemical and microbiological analysis of the BFRI made shidol and the traditional shidol were carried out during the 90 days of storage period after vacuum packaging. In proximate composition analysis, higher level of protein and fat content were found in BFRI made shidol than the traditional shidol. However, the traditional shidol samples showed poor quality due to the high total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), peroxide values, and moisture along with a promising microbial load; in contrast, the results obtained in the BFRI shidol samples were within the acceptable limit for human consumption. The presence of coliform bacteria in the traditional shidol also reflected the improper handling, unawareness of good hygiene and sanitation during production. The results of this study indicate that vacuum packaging can be an effective method in maintaining the quality of shidol by preventing crosscontamination and delaying the degradation of nutrients. Additionally, an improved BFRI technology for shidol production can minimize the biochemical and microbiological quality loss of shidol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper critically analyses how Islamization of Knowledge (IOK), Radical Reform (RR), and Maqasid Methodology (MM), three distinct Islamic intellectual projects, attempted to develop discourses of Islamic epistemology in facing contemporary developments of natural and social sciences. Mainly, the paper focuses on similarities, differences, and potential contributions of all three projects respectively. Initially, this paper observes that IOK, RR, and MM have solid agreements among themselves in defining the core crisis of the modern Islamic intellectual tradition, as well as in highlighting the importance of inclusion of Islamic primary sources and its normative guidance in the process of reorienting modern knowledge. Equally, each of those projects presents itself as a new reflection of Islamic primary texts considering current intellectual challenges. Nevertheless, this paper further finds that all three projects have deep disagreements among themselves in terms of defining the scope of epistemic authority of revelation, reason, and spirituality and thereby offer three different visions of Islamic epistemic schema in facing modern knowledge. Abstract

This research paper demonstrates a metamaterial (MTM) based sensing technique to detect various blood samples by analyzing their dielectric properties. The performance of this MTM-based sensor is evaluated with the help of mimicked human blood samples that closely resemble the dielectric properties of actual human blood samples. Moreover, the ISM band frequency of 2.4 GHz is chosen as one of the reference resonance frequencies due to its various industrial and medical applications. The resonating patch is developed on the FR-4 substrate with a dimension of 10 × 20 mm2 that provides sharp reference resonances of 2.4 and 4.72 GHz for the spectra of the transmission coefficient with a good quality factor (Q-factor). The MTM sensor can detect the mimicked blood samples with a maximum frequency deviation of up to 650 MHz at 2.4 GHz and up to 850 MHz at 4.72 GHz, with maximum sensitivity of 0.917 and 0.707, respectively. The measured results using the prototype of the sensor support the simulation result with good agreement, indicating high sensing capability. Due to its high sensitivity, figure of merit (FoM), and frequency shifting with dielectric property changes in blood samples, the developed MTM-based sensor can be implemented effectively for quick sensing of infected blood samples and biomedical applications. 40. SnO2 Nanosphere/Carbon Dot-Embedded Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanocomposites for High-Performance Binder-Free Asymmetric Supercapacitor Electrodes.

Abstract

Herein, a 3D-0D-2D-ternary heterostructure nanocomposite comprising pseudocapacitive SnO2 nanospheres (3D) and carbon dot (0D)-embedded Ti3C2Tx (MXene) nanosheets (2D) on Ni-foam was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal strategy for the use of positive electrodes in asymmetric supercapacitor devices. Yellow-emissive carbon dots were synthesized using the nontoxic polyphenolic precursor 2,4,6-tridihydroxybenzoic acid through a simple thermal heating method by dehydrating sulfuric acid medium through dehydration-induced carbonization. SnO2 played a crucial role by providing reactive centers on the surface of the carbon-dot-embedded MXene, thereby significantly enhancing the capacitive performances. Encapsulation of MXene by the 3D SnO2 nanospheres restricted the restacking tendency of the MXene nanosheets, enhancing their ability to store surface charge. Owing to its excellent morphological features, SnO2/carbon dots@MXene afforded superior electrochemical activities, having a specific capacitance of 1074 F/g in a three-electrode study. Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor device composed of the synthesized SnO2/carbon dots@MXene nanocomposite exhibited the maximum specific capacitance of 92 F/g at 2 A/g, with an enhanced energy density of 51.11 W h/kg. The supercapacitor device exhibited approximately 103% retention of the specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles and was able to illuminate light-emitting diode bulbs of different colors, demonstrating its practical applicability. Because of its superior electrochemical performance, the SnO2/carbon dots@MXene ternary nanocomposite may be a promising candidate for next-generation binder-free supercapacitor electrodes. Abstract

Next-generation consumer electronics and electric vehicle (EV) energy charging technology promise transformative advancements in the automotive industry. One of the main challenges that hinders consumers’ experience is range anxiety particularly relevant in locales where the installation of fixed charging stations (FCSs) is beset by logistical hurdles, notably in rural regions. With the advancement of consumer electronics especially in the design of Mobile Charging Stations (MCSs), EV drivers can now access these MCSs to exchange energy. However, concerns regarding data security and the best strategies to select an MCS to trade energy may negatively impact consumer experiences. This paper delves into the conception of intelligent remedies by proposing the integration of reinforcement learning and blockchain technology to empower EV drivers to access and securely exchange energy with MCSs. We design a Proof of MCSs (PoMCS) as a consensus protocol to select the winning MCSs as block miners in the blockchain. The results of our experiment show that the average gain for the MCSs increases when using the proposed model and therefore inclined to serve more EVs.

43. The 2000–2017 drought risk assessment of the western and southwestern basins in Iran

Abstract

The study investigates the relationship between drought and vegetation variations in three main basins of western and southwestern of Iran, using the comprehensive approach of time-series analysis, Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and anomaly calculation. A total of 30 ground stations’ daily meteorological data and the MODIS 16-day composite NDVI products (2000–2017) were used in this case. The results showed that in the Great Karoun River (GKRW) and Karkheh River (KRW) sub-regions, the NDVI decreased slightly over the study period. Simultaneously, in the West Marginal (WMW) sub-region the NDVI slightly increased somewhat. Overall, the NDVI in the whole study area presented an insignificant decrease. Also the results found that there is a significant relationship (p< 0.02) between the NDVI (0.3–0.7) with spring drought and between NDVI (0.2–0.3) with fall drought (p< 0.01). There is a marginally significant relationship (R= 0.43, p= 0.07) between NDVI (0.3–0.4) with fall drought and a relatively high, but insignificant relationship between NDVI (0.7–0.8) with spring drought (R= 0.41, p= 0.09). Low temperature can play an important role in determining the relationship between SPI and NDVI, which evidenced that it can trade-off the effect of a very wet year. As well as a year with very wet condition can affect the NDVI of the coming years. Since summer is hot season in the study area and most of the vegetation consists of shrubs and grasslands, of which the NDVI ranges between 0.2 and 0.4, the vegetation cover can be significantly affected by a wet summer with abundant precipitation.

Abstract

Objective We aimed to describe clinical and laboratory characteristics and determine the predictors of outcome in patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.Methods This prospective study was conducted over 2 years among hospitalized patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. Patient outcome was assessed using the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 3 months. Outcome predictors were identified using logistic regression analysis.Results Eighty-one patients were included in this study. The median mRS outcome at 3 months was 1 (interquartile range 1–3). Poor outcomes were observed in 27.2% of patients, and the mortality rate was 9.8%. Factors associated with poor outcomes were age >60 years (relative risk [RR] 5.1), hemiparesis (RR 5.4), altered level of consciousness (RR 7.1), and transverse sinus involvement (RR 1.1). In general, mRS scores were not associated with D-dimer levels (RR 2.4). However, older patients with elevated D-dimer levels showed a significant association with poor outcomes (1.6) according to mRS scores.Conclusion Older age, hemiparesis, and altered consciousness levels were independent predictors of poor outcomes in patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. High D-dimer level showed no association with functional disability, except in older patients.

46. Entry of a Six-Residue Antimicrobial Peptide Derived from Lactoferricin B into Single Vesicles and Escherichia coliCells without Damaging their Membranes

Abstract

Lactoferricin B (LfcinB) and shorter versions of this peptide have antimicrobial activity. However, the elementary processes of interactions of these peptides with lipid membranes and bacteria are still not well understood. To elucidate the mechanism of their antimicrobial activity, we investigated the interactions of LfcinB (4–9) (its sequence of RRWQWR) with Escherichia colicells and giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs). LfcinB (4–9) and lissamine rhodamine B red-labeled LfcinB (4–9) (Rh-LfcinB (4–9)) did not induce an influx of a membrane-impermeant fluorescent probe, SYTOX green, from the outside of E. colicells into their cytoplasm, indicating that no damage occurred in their plasma membrane. To examine the activity of LfcinB (4–9) to enter E. colicytoplasm, we investigated the interaction of Rh-LfcinB (4–9) with single cells of E. colicontaining calcein using confocal microscopy. We found that Rh-LfcinB (4–9) entered the cytoplasm without leakage of calcein. Next, we investigated the interactions of Rh-LfcinB (4–9) with single GUVs of dioleoylphosphatidylglycerol (DOPG) and dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) mixtures containing a fluorescent probe, Alexa Fluor 647 hydrazide (AF647), using the single GUV method. The results indicate that Rh-LfcinB (4–9) outside the GUV translocated through the GUV membrane and entered its lumen without leakage of AF647. Interaction of Rh-LfcinB (4–9) with DNA increased its fluorescence intensity greatly. Therefore, we can conclude that Rh-LfcinB (4–9) can translocate across lipid membrane regions of the plasma membrane of E. colicells to enter their cytoplasm without leakage of calcein and its antimicrobial activity is not due to damage of their plasma membranes.

47. Polyphenolic Carbon Quantum Dots with Intrinsic Reactive Oxygen Species Amplification for Two-Photon Bioimaging and In Vivo Tumor Therapy

Abstract

Recent studies indicate that mitochondrial dysfunctions and DNA damage have a critical influence on cell survival, which is considered one of the therapeutic targets for cancer therapy. In this study, we demonstrated a comparative study of the effect of polyphenolic carbon quantum dots (CQDs) on in vitro and in vivo antitumor efficacy. Dual emissive (green and yellow) shape specific polyphenolic CQDs (G-CQDs and Y-CQDs) were synthesized from easily available nontoxic precursors (phloroglucinol), and the antitumor property of the as-synthesized probe was investigated as compared to round-shaped blue emissive CQDs (B-CQDs) derived from well-reported precursor citric acid and urea. The B-CQDs had a nuclei-targeting property, and G-CQDs and Y-CQDs had mitochondria-targeting properties. We have found that the polyphenol containing CQDs (at a dose of 100 μg mL–1) specifically attack mitochondria by excess accumulation, altering the metabolism, inhibiting branching pattern, imbalanced Bax/Bcl-2homeostasis, and ultimately generating oxidative stress levels, leading to oxidative stress-induced cell death in cancer cells in vitro. We show that G-CQDs are the main cause of oxidative stress in cancer cells because of their ability to produce sufficient •OH–and 1O2radicals, evidenced by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and a terephthalic acid test. Moreover, the near-infrared absorption properties of the CQDs were exhibited in two-photon (TP) emission, which was utilized for TP cellular imaging of cancer cells without photobleaching. The in vivo antitumor test further discloses that intratumoral injection of G-CQDs can significantly augment the treatment efficacy of subcutaneous tumors without any adverse effects on BalB/c nude mice. We believe that shape-specific polyphenolic CQD-based nanotheranostic agents have a potential role in tumor therapy, thus proving an insight on treatment of malignant cancers.

Due to their distinctive security characteristics, all-solid-state batteries are seen as a potential technology for the upcoming era of energy storage. The flexibility of nanomaterials shows enormous potential for the advancement of all-solid-state batteries' exceptional power and energy storage capacities. These batteries might be applied in many areas such as large-scale energy storage for power grids, as well as in the creation of foldable and flexible electronics, and portable gadgets. The most difficult aspect of creating a comprehensive nanoscale all-solid-state battery assembly is the task of decreasing the particle size of the solid electrolyte while maintaining its excellent ionic conductivity. Materials possessing nanoscale structural features and a substantial electrochemically active surface area have the potential to significantly enhance power characteristics and the cycle life. This might bring about substantial changes to existing energy storage models. The primary objective of this research is to summarize the latest advancements in utilizing nanomaterials for energy harvesting in various all-solid-state battery assemblies. This study examines the most complex solid-solid interfaces of all-solid-state batteries, as well as feasible methods for implementing nanomaterials in such interfaces. Currently, there is significant attention on the necessity to develop electrode-solid electrolyte interfaces that exhibit nanoscale particle articulation and other characteristics related to the behavior of lithium ions.

Abstract

The timely identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children is imperative to prevent potential challenges as they grow. When sharing data related to autism for an accurate diagnosis, safeguarding its security and privacy is a paramount concern to fend off unauthorized access, modification, or theft during transmission. Researchers have devised diverse security and privacy models or frameworks, most of which often leverage proprietary algorithms or adapt existing ones to address data leakage. However, conventional anonymization methods, although effective in the sanitization process, proved inadequate for the restoration process. Furthermore, despite numerous scholarly contributions aimed at refining the restoration process, the accuracy of restoration remains notably deficient. Based on the problems identified above, this paper presents a novel approach to data restoration for sanitized sensitive autism datasets with improved performance. In the prior study, we constructed an optimal key for the sanitization process utilizing the proposed Enhanced Combined PSO-GWO framework. This key was implemented to conceal sensitive autism data in the database, thus avoiding information leakage. In this research, the same key was employed during the data restoration process to enhance the accuracy of the original data recovery. Therefore, the study enhanced the restoration process for ASD data's security and privacy by utilizing an optimal key produced via the Enhanced Combined PSO-GWO framework. When compared to existing meta-heuristic algorithms, the simulation results from the autism data restoration experiments demonstrated highly competitive accuracies with 99.90%, 99.60%, 99.50%, 99.25%, and 99.70%, respectively.
