Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered attention as potential catalysts for water splitting owing to their unique structures, diverse electronic properties, and composition from earth‐abundant elements. While certain TMD catalysts, notably MoS2, have shown promising activity for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), achieving performance comparable to traditional platinum catalysts remains a challenge. While significant effort has been invested into understanding the effect of TMD's structural properties, such as defectiveness and crystalline phases, recent work has emphasized the role of extrinsic factors on HER. This review summarizes the current understanding of the impact of commonly overlooked electrocatalytic effects that exhibit an enhanced importance in TMD‐based HER. By combining recent advances in theoretical modeling and experimental work, we review the dominating effects of extrinsic factors including electronic resistance, interfacial barriers, surface roughness, oxidation, and valence impurities. Our work aims to provide insights into optimizing TMDs as highly efficient catalysts for HER, facilitating future advancements in hydrogen generation technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrate the strengthening of graphene, an atomically thin carbon allotrope, by out-of-plane folding. Through lateral confinement of graphene at the water–air interface, nanoscale buckling was induced in suspended flakes, leading to an unexpected folding transition beyond a critical surface pressure. The emergence of folding was confirmed by in situ Brewster angle reflectivity and ex situ microscopy, showing a unique "z-laminated" nanostructure. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that z-lamination yields an enhanced adhesion between neighboring flakes compared to lateral sliding, which was confirmed by a surface pressure hysteresis during the folding process. Mechanical testing reveals superior Young's modulus and yield strength when compared to conventional graphene assemblies and even compared to composites. We demonstrate the potential of the z-lamination approach for applications in graphene-based structural materials, tribological layers, and functional electrochemical coatings. Finally, the complete recyclability of z-laminated graphene opens up new routes toward sustainable nanostructured materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Local laser‐induced oxidation is an extremely valuable technique to perform high‐throughput optimization across multidimensional parameter sets. In this work, a versatile method is presented for the synthesis of titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin‐films with varying crystalline structures through the use of localized, visible, continuous‐wave laser‐processing. By controlling the laser intensity and the exposure time, the conversion of amorphous titanium disulfide (a‐TiS2) precursor films into distinct phases of TiO2 is achieved and a laser‐induced oxidation phase diagram is constructed with the resulting material phases, including anatase, rutile, and black TiO2. By utilizing the dependence of phase formation on the rate and duration of laser energy input, mixtures of anatase and rutile phases are fabricated with controlled spatial arrangements. Photocatalytic properties of the synthesized films are evaluated using the degradation of nitrogen oxide (NOx) gas under UV illumination and an organic dye under white‐light illumination, revealing that mixtures of anatase and rutile phases demonstrate superior photocatalytic activity. The laser‐induced oxidation method highlighted showcases a strategy for precisely tailored phase composition for directly tunable properties, paving the way for in‐depth studies into structure‐property relationships in photocatalysis and other applications of metal oxide films. Hot electrons (HEs) represent out-of-equilibrium carriers that are capable of facilitating reactions which are inaccessible under conventional conditions. Despite the similarity of the HE process to catalysis, optimization strategies such as orbital alignment and adsorption kinetics have not received significant attention in enhancing the HE-driven reaction yield. Here, we investigate catalytic effects in HE-driven reactions using a compositional catalyst modification (CCM) approach. Through a top-down alloying process and systematic characterization, using electrochemical, photodegradation, and ultrafast spectroscopy, we are able to disentangle chemical effects from competing electronic phenomena. Correlation between reactant energetics and the HE reaction yield demonstrates the crucial role of orbital alignment in HE catalytic efficiency. Optimization of this parameter was found to enhance HE reaction efficiency 5-fold, paving the way for tailored design of HE-based catalysts for sustainable chemistry applications. Finally, our study unveils an emergent ordering effect in photocatalytic HE processes that imparts the catalyst with an unexpected polarization dependence.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has emerged as a promising material for catalysis and sustainable energy conversion. However, the inertness of its basal plane to electrochemical reactions poses challenges to the utilization of wafer-scale MoS 2 in electrocatalysis. To overcome this limitation, we present a technique that enhances the catalytic activity of continuous MoS 2 by preferentially activating its buried grain boundaries (GBs). Through mild UV irradiation, a significant enhancement in GB activity was observed that approaches the values for MoS 2 edges, as confirmed by a site-selective photo-deposition technique and micro-electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) measurements. Combined spectroscopic characterization and ab-initio simulation demonstrates substitutional oxygen functionalization at the grain boundaries to be the origin of this selective catalytic enhancement by an order of magnitude. Our approach not only improves the density of active sites in MoS 2 catalytic processes but yields a new photocatalytic conversion process. By exploiting the difference in electronic structure between activated GBs and the basal plane, homo-compositional junctions were realized that improve the photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen by 47% and achieve performances beyond the capabilities of other catalytic sites.

Two-dimensional transition metal nitrides offer intriguing possibilities for achieving novel electronic and mechanical functionality owing to their distinctive and tunable bonding characteristics compared to other 2D materials. We demonstrate here the enabling effects of strong bonding on the morphology and functionality of 2D tungsten nitrides. The employed bottom-up synthesis experienced a unique substrate stabilization effect beyond van-der-Waals epitaxy that favored W 5 N 6 over lower metal nitrides. Comprehensive structural and electronic characterization reveals that monolayer W 5 N 6 can be synthesized at large scale and shows semimetallic behavior with an intriguing indirect band structure. Moreover, the material exhibits exceptional resilience against mechanical damage and chemical reactions. Leveraging these electronic properties and robustness, we demonstrate the application of W 5 N 6 as atomic-scale dry etch stops that allow the integration of high-performance 2D materials contacts. These findings highlight the potential of 2D transition metal nitrides for realizing advanced electronic devices and functional interfaces.
