Abstract Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic malignancy characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow. MM patients with aggressive progression have poor survival, emphasizing the urgent need for identifying new therapeutic targets. Here, we show that the leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B1 (LILRB1), a transmembrane receptor conducting negative immune response, is a top-ranked gene associated with poor prognosis in MM patients. LILRB1 deficiency inhibits MM progression in vivo by enhancing the ferroptosis of MM cells. Mechanistic studies reveal that LILRB1 forms a complex with the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) and LDLR adapter protein 1 (LDLRAP1) to facilitate LDL/cholesterol uptake. Loss of LILRB1 impairs cholesterol uptake but activates the de novo cholesterol synthesis pathway to maintain cellular cholesterol homeostasis, leading to the decrease of anti-ferroptotic metabolite squalene. Our study uncovers the function of LILRB1 in regulating cholesterol metabolism and protecting MM cells from ferroptosis, implicating LILRB1 as a promising therapeutic target for MM patients.

The NLRP3 inflammasome is critically involved in the development of depression. The E3 ubiquitin ligase TRIM31 negatively regulates this process by promoting the degradation of NLRP3 through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Modified Danzhi Xiaoyaosan (MDZXYS) has shown good therapeutic effect in both preclinical and clinical depression treatments, yet the underlying mechanisms of its antidepressant effects are not fully understood. In the present study, we aimed to explore the antidepressant mechanisms of MDZXYS, focusing on NLRP3 activation and ubiquitin-mediated degradation. We employed rats with depression induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) and conducted various behavioral tests, including the sucrose preference, forced swimming, and open field tests. Neuronal damage in CUMS-treated rats was assessed using Nissl staining. We measured proinflammatory cytokine levels using ELISA kits and analyzed NLRP3/TRIM31 protein expression via Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. Our results disclosed that MDZXYS reversed CUMS-induced depression-like behaviors in rats, reduced proinflammatory cytokine levels (IL-1β), and ameliorated neuronal damage in the prefrontal cortex. Additionally, CUMS activated the NLRP3 inflammasome in the prefrontal cortex and upregulated the protein expression of TRIM31. After MDZXYS administration, the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome-associated proteins was reduced, while the expression level of TRIM31 was further increased. Through co-localized immunofluorescence staining, we observed a significant elevation in the co-localization expression of NLRP3 and TRIM31 in the prefrontal cortex of the MDZXYS group. These findings suggest that inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated neuroinflammation by modulating the TRIM31signaling pathway may underlie the antidepressant effects of MDZXYS, and further support targeting NLRP3 as a novel approach for the prevention and treatment of depression.

Summary: Neuromodulation is pivotal in modifying neuronal properties and motor states. CKR-1, a homolog of the cholecystokinin receptor, modulates robust escape steering and undulation body bending in C. elegans. Nevertheless, the mechanisms through which CKR-1 governs these motor states remain elusive. We elucidate the head motoneuron SMD as the orchestrator of both motor states. This regulation involves two neuropeptides: NLP-12 from DVA enhances undulation body curvature, while NLP-18 from ASI amplifies Ω-turn head curvature. Moreover, synthetic NLP-12 and NLP-18 peptides elicit CKR-1-dependent currents in Xenopus oocytes and Ca2+ transients in SMD neurons. Notably, CKR-1 shows higher sensitivity to NLP-18 compared to NLP-12. In situ patch-clamp recordings reveal CKR-1, NLP-12, and NLP-18 are not essential for neurotransmission at C. elegans neuromuscular junction, suggesting that SMD independently regulates head and body bending. Our studies illustrate that a single motoneuron SMD utilizes a cholecystokinin receptor CKR-1 to integrate two motor states.

Background Targeted immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) is an effective and safe method for the treatment of malignancies. Development of mAbs with improved cytotoxicity, targeting new and known tumor-associated antigens, therefore continues to be an active research area. We reported that Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) is a good target for immunotherapy of human cancers based on its wide expression in different cancers but not in normal tissues. As DKK1 is a secreted protein, mAbs binding directly to DKK1 have limited effects on cancer cells in vivo.Methods The specificity and antibody-binding capacity of DKK1-A2 mAbs were determined using indirect ELISA, confocal imaging, QIFIKIT antibody-binding capacity and cell surface binding assays. The affinity of mAbs was determined using a surface plasmon resonance biosensor. A flow cytometry-based cell death was performed to detect tumor cell apoptosis. Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) assays were used to evaluate the ability of DKK1-A2 mAbs to mediate ADCC and CDC activities against tumor cells in vitro. Flow cytometry data were collected with an FACSymphony A3 cell analyzer and analyzed with FlowJo V.10.1 software. Human cancer xenograft mouse models were used to determine the in vivo therapeutic efficacy and the potential safety and toxicity of DKK1-A2 mAbs. In situ TUNEL assay was performed to detect apoptosis in tumors and mouse organs.Results We generated novel DKK1-A2 mAbs that recognize the DKK1 P20 peptide presented by human HLA-A*0201 (HLA-A2) molecules (DKK1-A2 complexes) that are naturally expressed by HLA-A2+DKK1+ cancer cells. These mAbs directly induced apoptosis in HLA-A2+DKK1+ hematologic and solid cancer cells by activating the caspase-9 cascade, effectively lysed the cancer cells in vitro by mediating CDC and ADCC and were therapeutic against established cancers in their xenograft mouse models. As DKK1 is not detected in most human tissues, DKK1-A2 mAbs neither bound to or killed HLA-A2+ blood cells in vitro nor caused tissue damage in tumor-free or tumor-bearing HLA-A2-transgenic mice.Conclusion Our study suggests that DKK1-A2 mAbs may be a promising therapeutic agent to treat human cancers.

The controllable pitch propeller hydraulic system has high constraints and nonlinearity. Due to these inherent deficiencies, the proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control algorithm cannot meet the control accuracy requirements of nonlinear systems. A control law based on a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is designed in this paper. The gain parameters of the predictive control are optimized. The MPC and PID control systems are compared and simulated to verify the MPC controller’s effectiveness. Subsequently, the embedded controller of a controllable pitch propeller is developed. The support package for the embedded circuit board target containing an underlying driver for each interface is written by introducing the C-MEX S-Function and TLC programming language. A semi-physical simulation experiment is performed. The results show that the established controllable pitch propeller with an embedded controller displays reliable running performance, good anti-interference, and the capacity to fulfill the control function of the pitch propeller under various working conditions.

We achieve high‐framerate (< 100 μs) high‐contrast‐ratio ferroelectric liquid crystal displays (FLCD) on Gen 4.5. Innovatively, a new polyimide (PI) that is suitable for ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) alignment is synthesized and tested on the production line. It replaces Nylon 6 (N6), which was the barrier to the commercialization of FLCD. Moreover, a new FLC is synthesized to match requirements in mass production. Additionally, various materials were studied to investigate the surface energy and relative performance. It is not only proof of the feasibility on the production line, but also a significant step towards the commercialization of field‐sequential‐color high‐resolution FLCDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Achieving the goals of "carbon peaking" and "carbon neutrality" becomes one of the important elements of the ecological civilization strategy in China. Based on the strong balanced panel data of 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2019, we investigate the impact of Low-carbon city pilot policy (LCCP policy) on FDI inflows by using the multi-period DID model and intermediary model. After that, we discuss the heterogenous impact in terms of both policy tools and geographic locations. Furthermore, we investigate the spillover effects of the LCCP policy on the FDI inflows of surrounding cities using the Spatial Dubin DID model. The results show that (1) the LCCP policy can significantly attract FDI through reducing compliance costs and promoting technological innovation, and the Bacon decomposition and the placebo test show that the estimation error is small and the regression result is relatively stable; (2) command-mandatory tools have negative effects on FDI, while market-oriented tools can effectively attract FDI in pilot cities, but voluntary tools have no significant effect on FDI in pilot cities; (3) the LCCP policy can significantly promote the inflows of FDI in the eastern and western regions, but it does not significantly promote the FDI in central regions; (4) there is a positive spillover effect on FDI inflows to surrounding cities. Abstract The study introduces a method for identifying the location of receiver coils within a multi‐transmitter IPT system that utilizes shared transmitter coils. In contrast to the conventional receiver coil position recognition methods, this approach eliminates the need for additional detection coils and position sensors. Identifying the location of the receiver coil in a multi‐transmitter IPT system is achieved through the concurrent optimization of the transmitter coil and its electrical characteristics. The study presents the design of coil grouping and control mechanisms for a 3×3 multi‐transmitter. A mathematical model has been developed for the mutual inductance between receiver and transmitter coils on the X–Y plane. Adaptive cooperative particle swarm optimizer (ACPSO) facilitates the identification of mutual inductance and load parameters in a multi‐transmitter IPT system, positioning the receiver coil in a 2D plane using genetic particle swarm optimization (GAPSO) and a mutual inductance mathematical model. The discrepancy in accuracy between the receiver coil's test coordinates and the absolute coordinates remains below 3.5%.

Abstract Background It is not fully established whether plasma β-amyloid(Aβ)42/Aβ40 and phosphorylated Tau181 (p-Tau181) can effectively detect Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathophysiology in older Chinese adults and how these biomarkers correlate with astrocyte reactivity, Aβ plaque deposition, tau tangle aggregation, and neurodegeneration. Methods We recruited 470 older adults and analyzed plasma Aβ42/Aβ40, p-Tau181, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light (NfL) using the Simoa platform. Among them, 301, 195, and 70 underwent magnetic resonance imaging, Aβ and tau positron emission tomography imaging. The plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 and p-Tau181 thresholds were defined as ≤0.0609 and ≥2.418 based on the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis using the Youden index by comparing Aβ-PET negative cognitively unimpaired individuals and Aβ-PET positive cognitively impaired patients. To evaluate the feasibility of using plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 (A) and p-Tau181 (T) to detect AD and understand how astrocyte reactivity affects this process, we compared plasma GFAP, Aβ plaque, tau tangle, plasma NfL, hippocampal volume, and temporal-metaROI cortical thickness between different plasma A/T profiles and explored their relations with each other using general linear models, including age, sex, APOE-ε4, and diagnosis as covariates. Results Plasma A+/T + individuals showed the highest levels of astrocyte reactivity, Aβ plaque, tau tangle, and axonal degeneration, and the lowest hippocampal volume and temporal-metaROI cortical thickness. Lower plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 and higher plasma p-Tau181 were independently and synergistically correlated with higher plasma GFAP and Aβ plaque. Elevated plasma p-Tau181 and GFAP concentrations were directly and interactively associated with more tau tangle formation. Regarding neurodegeneration, higher plasma p-Tau181 and GFAP concentrations strongly correlated with more axonal degeneration, as measured by plasma NfL, and lower plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 and higher plasma p-Tau181 were related to greater hippocampal atrophy. Higher plasma GFAP levels were associated with thinner cortical thickness and significantly interacted with lower plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 and higher plasma p-Tau181 in predicting more temporal-metaROI cortical thinning. Voxel-wise imaging analysis confirmed these findings. Discussion This study provides a valuable reference for using plasma biomarkers to detect AD in the Chinese community population and offers novel insights into how astrocyte reactivity contributes to AD progression, highlighting the importance of targeting reactive astrogliosis to prevent AD.

Abstract Introduction The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater-Bay-Area of South China has an 86 million population and faces a significant challenge of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the characteristics and prevalence of AD in this area are still unclear due to the rarely available community-based neuroimaging AD cohort. Methods Following the standard protocols of the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the Greater-Bay-Area Healthy Aging Brain Study (GHABS) was initiated in 2021. GHABS participants completed clinical assessments, plasma biomarkers, genotyping, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), β-amyloid (Aβ) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, and tau PET imaging. The GHABS cohort focuses on pathophysiology characterization and early AD detection in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In this study, we analyzed plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 (A), p-Tau181 (T), neurofilament light, and GFAP by Simoa in 470 Chinese older adults, and 301, 195, and 70 had MRI, Aβ PET, and tau PET, respectively. Plasma biomarkers, Aβ PET, tau PET, hippocampal volume, and temporal-metaROI cortical thickness were compared between normal control (NC), subjective cognitive decline (SCD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia groups, controlling for age, sex, and APOE-ε4. The prevalence of plasma A/T profiles and Aβ PET positivity were also determined in different diagnostic groups. Results The aims, study design, data collection, and potential applications of GHABS are summarized. SCD individuals had significantly higher plasma p-Tau181 and plasma GFAP than the NC individuals. MCI and dementia patients showed more abnormal changes in all the plasma and neuroimaging biomarkers than NC and SCD individuals. The frequencies of plasma A+/T+ (NC; 5.9%, SCD: 8.2%, MCI: 25.3%, dementia: 64.9%) and Aβ PET positivity (NC: 25.6%, SCD: 22.5%, MCI: 47.7%, dementia: 89.3%) were reported. Discussion The GHABS cohort may provide helpful guidance toward designing standard AD community cohorts in South China. This study, for the first time, reported the pathophysiology characterization of plasma biomarkers, Aβ PET, tau PET, hippocampal atrophy, and AD-signature cortical thinning, as well as the prevalence of Aβ PET positivity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of China. These findings provide novel insights into understanding the characteristics of abnormal AD pathological changes in South China’s older population.

Objective To compare the desalination effects of five desalination methods and their effects on the components for human coagulation factor Ⅷ(FⅧ), and provide reference for selection of protein desalination methods. Methods Sephadex G-25 Medium gel, Fractogel EMD BioSEC gel, ultrafiltration, room temperature dialysis and 4℃ dialysis were used to desalt human FⅧ. The desalination effect was evaluated by the removal rate of Na +, citrate ion and glycine. FⅧ protein recovery, FⅧ activity (FⅧ∶C), VWF antigen (VWF∶Ag), VWF activity(VWF∶Ac), VWF polymers and SDS-PAGE analysis before and after desalination were compared to evaluate the effect of desalination on FⅧ components. Results In terms of desalination effect, the removal rate of Na+ was the lowest in ultrafiltration desalination, while that of Fractogel EMD BioSEC gel was the highest [(97.90±0.06) % vs (99.82±0.07) %]. Except that there was no statistical significance between Sephadex G-25 Medium gel desalination and Fractogel EMD BioSEC gel desalination (P=0.90), the removal rates of the other four methods were statistically significant. The removal rate of glycine was the lowest in ultrafiltration desalination, wihle that of Fractogel EMD BioSEC gel desalination was the highest [(95.78±0.42) % vs (99.81±0.08) %]. Significant difference in glycine removal was noticed in ultrafiltration desalination, but not among the other four desalination methods. There was no significant difference in the removal rate of citrate ions among the five methods (P=0.85). For the effect of FⅧ components, FⅧ∶C, VWF∶Ag, VWF∶Ac and protein recovery rates of ultrafiltration desalination were the highest, with (18.34±1.99) IU/mL, (11.81±0.33) IU/mL, (12.26±0.58) IU/mL and (97.13±1.37) %, respectively. There was no significant change in VWF∶Ac/VWF∶Ag before and after desalination by the five methods. SDS-PAGE and VWF polymer analysis showed that different desalination methods had no significant impact on protein composition. Conclusion Although different desalination methods had no significant effect on the composition of FⅧ protein, the desalination effect was different. Moreover, different desalination methods had significant effects on protein recovery, FⅧ∶C, VWF∶Ag and VWF∶Ac. Splitting tensile failure is one of the main forms of instability failure of tunnel surrounding rock. At present, the mechanisms of rock crack propagation and energy evolution at the corresponding stages under dynamic splitting conditions have been rarely addressed. In this study, the splitting tests were carried out on Jinping marble samples using a split-Hopkinson pressure bar under different striking velocities. The dynamic damage processes of the samples were simulated with the ANSYS/LS-DYNA finite element software. From the perspectives of loboratory tests and numerical calculations, the mechanism of crack propagation and the characteristics of energy evolution during the splitting process of marble were comprehensively analyzed. The results show that the dynamic tensile strength of marble is linearly and positively related to the strain rate in the range of 5 s−1 to 35 s−1. The strain rate sensitivity of the Jinping marble is relatively low compared with the marbles of other regions. With the increase of the striking velocity, both the internal energy and kinetic energy of the system increase. At the moment of sample failure, the internal energy of the system drops to a minimum. Based on the calibrated parameters of Cowper-Symonds constitutive model, the final failure modes of the numerically simulated samples are basically consistent with the observed ones in the experiments. The research results of this study can provide guidance and reference for specific engineering applications.

Abstract Due to a rapidly aging global population, osteoporosis and the associated risk of bone fractures have become a wide-spread public health problem. However, osteoporosis is very heterogeneous, and the existing standard diagnostic measure is not sufficient to accurately identify all patients at risk of osteoporotic fractures and to guide therapy. Here, we constructed the first prospective multi-omics atlas of the largest osteoporosis cohort to date (longitudinal data from 366 participants at three time points), and also implemented an explainable data-intensive analysis framework (DLSF: Deep Latent Space Fusion) for an omnigenic model based on a multi-modal approach that can capture the multi-modal molecular signatures (M3S) as explicit functional representations of hidden genotypes. Accordingly, through DLSF, we identified two subtypes of the osteoporosis population in Chinese individuals with corresponding molecular phenotypes, i.e., clinical intervention relevant subtypes (CISs), in which bone mineral density benefits response to calcium supplements in 2-year follow-up samples. Many snpGenes associated with these molecular phenotypes reveal diverse candidate biological mechanisms underlying osteoporosis, with xQTL preferences of osteoporosis and its subtypes indicating an omnigenic effect on different biological domains. Finally, these two subtypes were found to have different relevance to prior fracture and different fracture risk according to 4-year follow-up data. Thus, in clinical application, M3S could help us further develop improved diagnostic and treatment strategies for osteoporosis and identify a new composite index for fracture prediction, which were remarkably validated in an independent cohort (166 participants).

Recently， approximately 20% of the products unqualified in the national sampling inspection of imported food have been found through food label inspection， which has become one of the most important inspection methods for imported prepackaged food. In this study， the labels of imported prepackaged food were analyzed to determine the important inspection points， noting that particular attention should be paid to the conformity of products with the entry and registration requirements of the general administration of customs， the use of compliant raw materials， and the standardization of the special labeling content. The results suggest that the quality and efficiency of label inspection should be improved from four aspects： enhancing the awareness and ability to prevent and control unqualified risks， strengthening the training of inspectors’ professional skills， developing an artificial intelligence label verification system， and optimizing the relevant laws and standards to improve the safety of imported prepackaged food.

To meet the low-voltage and high-power demand of fast charging of electric vehicles, an ISOP multi-channel inductive power transfer (IPT) system based on LCC-S compensation network is analyzed in this paper. Firstly, the system's improvement of transmission capability is analyzed without considering the cross-coupling. After that, to clarify the cross-coupling impression, the equivalent impedance formula for the inverter output terminals of each channel is calculated. Then, combined with the harmonic characteristics of high order topology, the zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition of each channel is analyzed. Found out that the cross-coupling may lead to a decrease in the instantaneous current value when the inverter is turned on, thereby increasing the risk of losing the ZVS operating state. To eliminate the influence of cross-coupling, a parameter design method is proposed without additional devices and control. Finally, a 3-channel ISOP-IPT system prototype is built. The system achieves an energy transmission of 17.06 kW with an efficiency of 93.22%. Compared with single-channel systems, the power capacity is increased while keeping the input current level unchanged. After compensation, the system achieves equivalent decoupling in the case of cross-coupling, each channel works independently and maintains the input voltage balance.

Background: Gukang Capsule has been used as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the treatment of primary osteoporosis (POP) in China. The primary aim of this study was to assess the clinical effectiveness and safety of Gukang Capsule in POP patients.Methods: A systematic search was conducted across multiple academic databases including PubMed, Web of science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chongqing VIP Information, and Wanfang database to identify randomized controlled trials investigating the Gukang Capsule in the treatment of POP. The screening process, data extraction, and assessment of methodological quality were conducted independently by two reviewers. Statistical analysis was performed using the Rev Man 5.3 software. Subgroup analysis was carried out through the combination of OPF. Subgroup analysis was performed according to whether OPF were combined. Stata 12.0 was used for sensitivity and bias analysis.Results: Nineteen studies were assessed that included 1804 participants. It was found that compared with the control group, the total effective rate (RR = 1.26, 95% CI, 1.20, 1.33), the Medical Outcomes Study Short-form 36 [RR = 1.26, 95% CI(1.20, 1.33)], the bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar vertebra (SMD = 0.77, 95% CI, 0.48, 1.07), the BMD of femoral neck [SMD = 0.84, 95% CI(0.53, 1.14)], and the BMD of Ward’s triangle (SMD = 0.64, 95% CI, 0.44, 0.85) of the Gukang Capsule experimental group were higher. Compared with the control group, the fracture healing time (SMD = −2.14, 95% CI, −2.45, −1.84), the bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) levels in serum (SMD = −2.00, 95% CI, −2.83, −1.17), the tartrate resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP-5b) levels in serum (SMD = −2.58, 95% CI, −3.87, −1.29) of the Gukang Capsule experimental group were lower. The bone glaprotein (BGP) levels in serum (SMD = −0.22, 95% CI, −1.86, 1.43) and the adverse events (RR = 0.80, 95% CI, 0.40, 1.63) of the experimental group and the control group have no difference.Conclusion: Gukang Capsule, as a CAM for the management of POP, exhibits the potential to enhance BMD and quality of life, expedite the healing time of OPF, diminish levels of BALP and TRACP-5b, and improve the total effective rate without increasing the adverse events.Systematic Review Registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?ID=CRD42023477774, PROSPERO CRD42023477774.

To investigate the distribution, contamination status, and antibiotic resistance of Listeria monocytogenes in four types of retail poultry meat, including chicken, duck, goose, and pigeon, sold in Jiading District, Shanghai, a total of 236 retail poultry meat samples were collected, and L. monocytogenes isolates were obtained for identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing against 14 common antibiotics. Forty-one L. monocytogenes isolates were detected from the 236 retail poultry meat samples, with detection rates of 24.47%, 19.44%, 14.75%, and 4.44% in chicken, goose, duck, and pigeon meat, respectively. Among refrigerated, frozen, and room temperature samples, refrigerated poultry had the highest detection rate at 25.40%, while frozen poultry had the lowest at 13.33%. The detection rate of L. monocytogenes in chicken meat differed significantly between the storage temperatures, while no significant differences were found for other poultry types. No significant differences in detection rates were observed between different retail locations or packaging methods. Isolates exhibited complete resistance to cefoxitin (FOX) and increasing resistance over time to tetracycline (TET) and clindamycin (CLI), while low levels of resistance were found for penicillin (PEN), oxacillin (OXA), and erythromycin (ERY). Resistance to ERY and TET suggests the potential for multidrug resistance. Significant differences in antibiotic resistance profiles were observed among L. monocytogenes from the various poultry types. In summary, contamination status and antibiotic resistance profiles differed among retail chicken, duck, goose, and pigeon meat sold and the resistance rate of strains continues to increase in Jiading District, Shanghai. Targeted control measures should be implemented to reduce the emergence of resistant strains, as retail conditions had minimal impact on L. monocytogenes prevalence in poultry meat.

IntroductionThe correlation between the non-use of cooking oil fumes (COFs) extractors and bone mineral density (BMD) have not been clarified. Consequently, this study attempted to explore the impact of non-use COFs extractors on BMD in population aged 45 years and older based on a cross-sectional study.MethodsThis study was a cross-sectional study within the framework of an ongoing prospective population-based cohort study in China. The multivariate linear regression models were used to evaluate the correlation between the non-use of fume extractors in family cooking and total lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck (FN), total hip BMD and levels of bone metabolism markers.ResultsA total of 3433 participants were included in the final analyses, of which 2607 (75.93%) participants used fume extractors. The results of models indicated that there were significant correlations of the non-use of fume extractors on total LS BMD (β = -0.024, 95% CI, -0.036, -0.012, p < 0.001), PINP (β = 4.363, 95% CI, 2.371, 6.356, p < 0.001) and ALP (β = 4.555, 95% CI, 2.593, 6.517, p < 0.001) levels.ConclusionsThis study verified that the use of fume extractors is an efficacious measure to prevent LS bone loss. For the sake of public bone health, people should install a fume extractor in the kitchen and use it routinely when cooking.

This work aimed to develop organic photocatalysts (PCs) that could mediate organocatalytic atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) under visible light. Through the core-modification of known chromophoric structures and ring-locking to reach a conjugation extension, annulated N-aryl benzo[kl]acridines were identified as effective visible light-responsive photocatalysts. The corresponding selenium-doped structure showed excellent performance in the O-ATRP of methacrylates, which could afford polymer products with controlled molecular weights and low dispersities under the irradiation of visible light at a 100 ppm catalyst loading.

Poultry may face simultaneous exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and tiamulin (TIA), given mycotoxin contamination and antibiotic use. As both mycotoxins and antibiotics can affect cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP450), our study aimed to explore their interaction. We developed UHPLC-MS/MS methods for the first-time determination of the interaction between TIA and AFB1 in vitro and in vivo in broiler chickens. The inhibition assay showed the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of AFB1 and TIA in chicken liver microsomes are more than 7.6 μM, indicating an extremely weak inhibitory effect on hepatic enzymes. Nevertheless, the oral TIA pharmacokinetic results indicated that AFB1 significantly increased the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUClast) of TIA by 167% (p < 0.01). Additionally, the oral AFB1 pharmacokinetics revealed that TIA increased the AUClast and mean residence time (MRT) of AFB1 by 194% (p < 0.01) and 136%, respectively. These results suggested that the observed inhibition may be influenced by other factors, such as transport. Therefore, it is meaningful to further explore transport and other enzymes, involved in the interaction between AFB1 and TIA. Furthermore, additional clinical studies are necessary to thoroughly assess the safety of co-exposure with mycotoxins and antibiotics.

Background: Takotsubo syndrome has been reported in patients with COVID-19, although minimal data are available. This investigation assessed the incidence and impact of takotsubo syndrome on patients hospitalized with COVID-19., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, codes to identify patients with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 with or without takotsubo syndrome in the National Inpatient Sample 2020 database. Outcomes between groups were compared after propensity score matching for patient and hospital demographics and comorbidities., Results: A total of 211,448 patients with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 were identified. Of these, 171 (0.08%) had a secondary diagnosis of takotsubo syndrome. Before matching, patients with COVID-19 and takotsubo syndrome, compared with patients without takotsubo syndrome, were older (68.95 vs 64.26 years; P < .001); more likely to be female (64.3% vs 47.2%; P < .001); and more likely to have anxiety (24.6% vs 12.8%; P < .001), depression (17.5% vs 11.4%; P = .02), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (24.6% vs 14.7%; P < .001). The takotsubo syndrome group had worse outcomes than the non-takotsubo syndrome group for death (30.4% vs 11.1%), cardiac arrest (7.6% vs 2.1%), cardiogenic shock (12.9% vs 0.4%), length of hospital stay (10.7 vs 7.5 days), and total charges ($152,685 vs $78,468) (all P < .001). After matching and compared with the non-takotsubo syndrome group (n = 508), the takotsubo syndrome group (n = 170) had a higher incidence of inpatient mortality (30% vs 14%; P < .001), cardiac arrest (7.6% vs 2.8%; P = .009), and cardiogenic shock (12.4% vs 0.4%; P < .001); a longer hospital stay (10.7 vs 7.6 days; P < .001); and higher total charges ($152,943 vs $79,523; P < .001)., Conclusion: Takotsubo syndrome is a rare but severe in-hospital complication in patients with COVID-19., (© 2024 The Authors.
