Abstract: Theoretical expectations regarding communication patterns between legislators and outside agents, such as lobbyists, agency officials, or policy experts, often depend on the relationship between legislators’ and agents’ preferences. However, legislators and nonelected outside agents evaluate the merits of policies using distinct criteria and considerations. We develop a measurement method that flexibly estimates the policy preferences for a class of outside agents—witnesses in committee hearings—separate from that of legislators’ and compute their preference distance across the two dimensions. In our application to Medicare hearings, we find that legislators in the U.S. Congress heavily condition their questioning of witnesses on preference distance, showing that legislators tend to seek policy information from like-minded experts in committee hearings. We do not find this result using a conventional measurement placing both actors on one dimension. The contrast in results lends support for the construct validity of our proposed preference measures.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) impair growth and development. While EDCs can occur naturally in aquatic ecosystems, they are continuously introduced through anthropogenic activities such as industrial effluents, pharmaceutical production, wastewater, and mining. To elucidate the chronic toxicological effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on aquatic organisms, we collected experimental data from a standardized chronic exposure test using Daphnia magna (D. magna), individuals of which were exposed to a potential EDC, trinitrotoluene (TNT). The chronic toxicity effects of this compound were explored through differential gene expression, gene ontology, network construction, and putative adverse outcome pathway (AOP) proposition. Our findings suggest that TNT has detrimental effects on the upstream signaling of Tcf/Lef, potentially adversely impacting oocyte maturation and early development. This study employs diverse bioinformatics approaches to elucidate the gene-level toxicological effects of chronic TNT exposure on aquatic ecosystems. Several theories of policy change posit that the politics of defining and prioritizing problems differs from the politics of devising and selecting solutions. The former involves simplifying through heuristics like indicators and ideology while the latter incorporates policy analysis and expertise to a greater degree. By employing two large datasets of U.S. congressional hearings to analyze policymakers' behavior of sending political messages, which we call "grandstanding," we offer two findings. First, consistent with our hypotheses, grandstanding is more prevalent when committees are focused on new and emerging problems than when committees examine proposed alternatives or the implementation of existing policies. Second, the cognitive dynamics of problem solving and the incentives to grandstand vary depending on policy issues considered in hearings. Our analysis helps put dissatisfaction with contemporary U.S. policymaking in context: a rise in "messaging politics" derives at least in part from an increased focus on contesting the problem space in agenda‐setting venues. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is notorious for its aggressive progression and dismal survival rates, with this study highlighting elevated interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels in patients as a key marker of increased disease severity and a potential prognostic indicator. Analyzing pre-treatment serum from 77 advanced PDAC patients via ELISA, the research determined optimal cutoff values for IL-6 and the IL-6:sIL-6Rα ratio using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, which then facilitated the division of patients into low and high IL-6 groups, showing significantly different survival outcomes. Notably, high IL-6 levels correlated with adverse features such as poorly differentiated histology, higher tumor burden, and low albumin levels, indicating a stronger likelihood of poorer prognosis. With a median follow-up of 9.28 months, patients with lower IL-6 levels experienced markedly better median overall survival and progression-free survival than those with higher levels, underscoring IL-6's role in predicting disease prognosis. Multivariate analysis further confirmed IL-6 levels, alongside older age, and elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, as predictors of worse outcomes, suggesting that IL-6 could be a critical biomarker for tailoring treatment strategies in advanced PDAC, warranting further investigation into its role in systemic inflammation and the tumor microenvironment. In this study, three nitrogen-containing aluminum-based metal-organic frameworks (Al-MOFs), namely, CAU-10pydc, MOF-303, and KMF-1, were investigated for the efficient separation of a C 2 H 2 /CO 2 gas mixture. Among these three Al-MOFs, KMF-1 demonstrated the highest selectivity for C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation (6.31), primarily owing to its superior C 2 H 2 uptake (7.90 mmol g -1 ) and lower CO 2 uptake (2.82 mmol g -1 ) compared to that of the other two Al-MOFs. Dynamic breakthrough experiments, using an equimolar binary C 2 H 2 /CO 2 gas mixture, demonstrated that KMF-1 achieved the highest separation performance. It yielded 3.42 mmol g -1 of high-purity C 2 H 2 (>99.95%) through a straightforward desorption process under He purging at 298 K and 1 bar. To gain insights into the distinctive characteristics of the pore surfaces of structurally similar CAU-10pydc and KMF-1, we conducted computational simulations using canonical Monte Carlo and dispersion-corrected density functional theory methods. These simulations revealed that the secondary amine (C 2 N-H) groups in KMF-1 played a more significant role in differentiating between C 2 H 2 and CO 2 compared to that of the N atoms in CAU-10pydc and MOF-303. Consequently, KMF-1 emerged as a promising adsorbent for the separation of high-purity C 2 H 2 from binary C 2 H 2 /CO 2 gas mixtures.
