The exponential growth in the consumption of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has resulted in a concomitant increase in the spent LIBs. Multi-component recycling is a highly desirable and beneficial process, yet the separator component remains overlooked. This study examined the thermal behavior, kinetics, thermodynamics, and evolved products of separator pyrolysis in N2 and CO2 atmospheres. Furthermore, the conversion was modeled using Aspen Plus and a sensitivity analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of varying operating conditions. The findings indicated that the whole degradation process could be divided into three stages: below 200 °C, 200–550 °C and 550–900 °C. The evolved products at peak temperatures of 485 °C in N2 and 500 °C in CO2 were composed of olefins and alkanes. The average apparent activation energy values were determined to be 222.78 kJ mol−1 and 159.36 kJ mol−1 in the N2 and CO2 atmospheres, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the separator decomposition was an endothermic and non-spontaneous process. Aspen Plus modeling results were in agreement with the experimental data. The sensitivity analysis revealed that an increase in temperature lead to an increased content of lighter compounds (≤C9) and a decrease in the proportion of heavier compounds (>C10) in the pyrolysis products.

Recycling the valuable metals found in spent permanent magnets (REPMs) poses a significant global challenge for the future. This study examines the efficiency of back extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) by oxalic acid solution from di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in recycling REPMs. To evaluate the efficiency of this process, several experiments were carried out using designed BOX-Behnken methodology to investigate the effects of various operational and chemical parameters, including stripping solution to loaded organic phase volume ratio (in the range of 1.0–2.0), oxalic acid concentration (ranging from 0.25 to 0.75 M), the stirring rate (ranged between 150 and 350 rpm), and stripping time (ranging from 15 to 45 min) on the REEs recovery and the purity of final production. Analysis of variance was applied to rigorously examine the results statistically. The results showed that more than 85 % of light and 80 % of heavy REEs can be recovered under optimal conditions. Moreover, the final product contained 43.5 % REEs and approximately 0.1 % iron. The stripping experiment using phosphoric acid as the reagent demonstrated ∼57 % light and ∼4 % heavy REEs recovery. Additionally, the recyclability of the organic phase showed its effective reuse for up to four cycles. This study underscores significant progress in the selective recovery of rare earth elements through a relatively straightforward process consuming mild reagents.

The reliability assessment of HVDC systems greatly depends on the insulating materials aging level and, among these, the cable insulation layer plays a fundamental role. With this in mind, in this work, the correlation between the electric field distribution and the triggering and evolution of PD in a DC cable containing an internal air void defect and subjected to normal operating conditions has been investigated. The aim is to demonstrate that the PD activity under DC depends on the electric field distribution which, in turn, is related to the conductivity gradient that varies with load. In a previous paper, the field distribution in a cable specimen was simulated. Here, instead, the field profiles have been experimentally obtained starting from the measured space charges detected simultaneously with the PD activity. For the charge detection and for the PD monitoring, an innovative PEA cell and a PD acquisition system have been used, respectively. Measurement results highlight that the PD behavior depends on both the electric field distribution and the time constant $\tau $ . Specifically, during the first 10 minutes of the beginning of the test, the field in the outer cable radius passes from 12 to 17 kV/mm and it is maintained around this last value until 30 minutes. PD are triggered after 1 minutes from the start of the test, corresponding to a PDIEF of 12.6 kV/mm calculated in the healthy cable section. The detected PD activity shows a PDRR with maximum value equal to 110 pulse/min at the beginning of the test. Whereas, after 15 minutes, the electric field variation dE/dt is approximately zero and the PDRR, that is maintained only by $\tau $ , results around 10 pulse/minute.

In recent years, the increasing demand and rising prices of rare earth elements (REEs), along with their attendant supply risk (about 95% of these elements are supplied by China), have led the European Commission to consider REEs as critical raw materials. Developing and optimizing processes for recovering REEs from secondary sources such as NdFeB magnets is fundamental in this context. A novel method to recover REEs by leaching with citric acid and subsequently separating these elements using the solvent extraction method has been introduced. Therefore, this research investigates the leaching efficiency of REEs, Fe, and B from NdFeB magnets. A full factorial design, with 18 experimental setups, was conducted to optimize the citric acid concentration (1–3 mol/L), leaching time (1–3 h), and solid–liquid ratio (5–10%wt./vol.). All tests were carried out at room temperature and 150 rpm. Different optimizations (response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) analysis) are used to maximize the REEs’ leaching efficiency. RSM resulted in a maximum extraction yield of total rare earth elements (TREEs) of about 89% in the investigated experimental plan. This result is similar to that for ANN analysis (about 86%), but more accurate than that for RSM. In fact, for the ANN, an overall R-value higher than 0.99 was obtained. This result indicates that the developed ANN can be used as an accurate model for estimating the leaching efficiencies of REEs from NdFeB magnets.

Electronic waste grows globally at a rate of 5% annually, which makes electronic waste recycling (WEEE recycling) an urgent task aimed at achieving (i) environmental protection and (ii) the preservation of mineral resources through the re-introduction of strategic metals into the market. As it turns out, WEEE recycling produces further waste, called WEEE secondary waste, which still contains valuable metals such as gold, silver, and copper. This study assessed the economic viability of recovering these metals and identified the most promising targets and approaches. WEEE secondary waste produced at a plant in southern Europe was sampled and examined for this purpose. The study methods included an ANOVA (analysis of variance) and an OCCP (orthogonal central composition plan). Over 90% gold, silver, and copper extraction was achieved with hydrochloric acid leaching in sodium hypochlorite with sodium chlorite as an oxidizing agent at 60 °C. The significance of the variation in the response for each factor, calculated using the Yates algorithm, demonstrates that by excluding sodium chloride and optimizing the doses of hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite, gold can be selectively recovered through the leaching process. The scenario of HCl (2.5M)/NaClO (5%) leaching results in the maximum extraction effect of Au (91.6%) at the lowest concentrations of Ag and Cu (37–44%).
