Issue Addressed: Childcare educator knowledge gaps in infection control practices and outbreak management. This can contribute to the well-reported issue of transmission of infectious diseases in childcare centres and the associated health and economic costs., Methods: A health promotion program in the form of an educational slideshow presentation with interactive question/answer component was developed and offered to all childcare centre staff in the Wide Bay region, Queensland., Results: Childcare educators who participated in the education sessions reported a significant increase in their knowledge and confidence in outbreak management on pre- and post-intervention self-assessment., Conclusions: Simple educational programs can significantly improve the self-assessed knowledge and confidence of childcare educators in managing infectious diseases. SO WHAT?: Improving knowledge and confidence of childcare centre staff in managing basic infectious diseases can help reduce the health and economic impacts of these infections. This work derives a theoretical value for the entropy of a Linear Additive Markov Process (LAMP), an expressive but simple model able to generate sequences with a given autocorrelation structure. Our research establishes that the theoretical entropy rate of a LAMP model is equivalent to the theoretical entropy rate of the underlying first-order Markov Chain. The LAMP model captures complex relationships and long-range dependencies in data with similar expressibility to a higher-order Markov process. While a higher-order Markov process has a polynomial parameter space, a LAMP model is characterised only by a probability distribution and the transition matrix of an underlying first-order Markov Chain. This surprising result can be explained by the information balance between the additional structure imposed by the next state distribution of the LAMP model, and the additional randomness of each new transition. Understanding the entropy of the LAMP model provides a tool to model complex dependencies in data while retaining useful theoretical results. To emphasise the practical applications, we use the LAMP model to estimate the entropy rate of the LastFM, BrightKite, Wikispeedia and Reuters-21578 datasets. We compare estimates calculated using frequency probability estimates, a first-order Markov model and the LAMP model, also considering two approaches to ensure the transition matrix is irreducible. The range-expansion of tropical herbivores due to ocean warming can profoundly alter temperate reef communities by overgrazing the seaweed forests that underpin them. Such ecological interactions may be mediated by changes to seaweed-associated microbiota in response to warming, but empirical evidence demonstrating this is rare. We experimentally simulated ocean warming and marine heatwaves (MHWs) to quantify effects on two dominant temperate seaweed species and their microbiota, as well as grazing by a tropical herbivore. The kelp Ecklonia radiata's microbiota in sustained warming and MHW treatments was enriched with microorganisms associated with seaweed disease and tissue degradation. In contrast, the fucoid Sargassum linearifolium's microbiota was unaffected by temperature. Consumption by the tropical sea-urchin Tripneustes gratilla was greater on Ecklonia where the microbiota had been altered by higher temperatures, while Sargassum's consumption was unaffected. Elemental traits (carbon, nitrogen), chemical defences (phenolics) and tissue bleaching of both seaweeds were generally unaffected by temperature. Effects of warming and MHWs on seaweed holobionts (host plus its microbiota) are likely species-specific. The effect of increased temperature on Ecklonia's microbiota and subsequent increased consumption suggest that changes to kelp microbiota may underpin kelp-herbivore interactions, providing novel insights into potential mechanisms driving change in species' interactions in warming oceans., (© 2024 The Authors. During 2022, extreme rainfall occurred across southeast Australia, making it the wettest year on record. The oceanic impact of extreme rainfall events in normally 'dry' regions is not well understood, as their effects are challenging to observe. Here, we use unique multi-platform timeseries and spatial data from 36 autonomous ocean glider missions over 13 years, and we define an extreme salinity threshold inshore of the East Australian Current. We show that the freshwater plume extended fivefold further than previously thought. The compound effect of multiple large rainfall events resulted in a newly observed stratification ('double-stacking') dynamic, with the stratification being largely controlled by salinity. Extreme salinity events are known to be important for species composition of local fisheries as well as detrimental for coastal water quality. Such events and their impacts may become more common as extreme rainfall events are projected to become more frequent in a changing climate.
