Abstract Due to their simple structure (two bond species randomly arranged on a cubic lattice), the zincblende A1−xBxC semiconductor alloys (zb-SCA) set a benchmark to explore how physical properties are impacted by disorder. A longstanding controversy was whether the lattice dynamics (phonons), governed by the bond force constant, i.e., a local physical property, is blind to the alloy disorder or actually sees it. Over the past two decades, we introduced the percolation model (PM) that distinguishes between like bonds depending on whether they vibrate in same (homo) or alien (hetero) environments (1-bond → 2-mode scheme). The PM seems to apply universally among zb-SCA, and hence would solve the controversy in favor of the second scenario. Here our aim is to take one step forward and complete in the main lines a PM-based taxonomy of high-pressure vibration spectra of zb-SCA. This might clarify how a disordered atomic alloy, seen by each bond species in terms of a homo/hetero composite (i.e., at the unusual mesoscopic scale) from the angle of the PM, behaves when the lattice shrinks under hydrostatic pressure. We focus on Cd1−xZnxTe as the last sensitive pending case. This tidying-up exercise is attractive at the fundamental level and useful for projecting phonon-based devices involving zb-SCA.

Obesity, the fifth leading cause of death globally and linked to chronic low-grade inflammation and development of numerous severe pathologies, is a major public health problem. Fermented foods, probiotics, and postbiotics emerge as promising avenues for combating obesity and inflammation. The aim of our study was to develop and characterize phyto-postbiotics corresponding to prebiotic compounds fermented by gut bacteria, which could act on obesity and related-inflammation. Chicory extract fermented by Akkermansia muciniphila (C-Akm) was selected as the most antioxidant of 20 fermented extracts. The identification of metabolites derived from C-Akm extract has enabled us to detect mostly amino acids, acids, and some polyphenols (daidzein and genistein). The anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity activities of C-Akm extract were studied by testing the extract (50 μg/mL) on the polarization of THP-1 into macrophages, the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated PBMCs, and the secretion of leptin and adiponectin in adipospheroids derived from human adipose stem cells. Finally, the extract was examined in 3D co-culture model mimicking inflamed obese adipose tissue. We found that C-Akm extract decreased ROS generation, TNF-α and Il-6 gene expression in polarized macrophages, INFγ and IL-17A secretion in LPS-stimulated PBMCs stimulated with LPS. It also decreased leptin expression while increasing adiponectin and HSL expression levels in both adipocytes and co-cultures. In addition, C-Akm extract stimulated adiponectin secretion in the co-culture model. Finally, our in vitro investigations demonstrated the potential benefits of C-Akm extract in the prevention and treatment of obesity-related inflammation.

Introduction: To objectify the oxygen debt in dogs with brachycephalic upper respiratory syndrome, eight mesocephalic dogs were subjected to a short running test on four test days and eight brachycephalic dogs on one test day. Blood samples were taken before and immediately after exercise and after 2 and 4 hours to assess cellular oxygenation. For this purpose, two available hypoxia markers, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and erythropoietin (EPO), were measured. The repeatability of the measurements was checked in the mesocephalic dogs. While VEGF measurement was repeatable over the 4 days of measurement, the EPO measurement was not. The VEGF basal values of the mesocephalic and brachycephalic dogs did not differ (7.6 ± 4.4 pg/ml and 6.9 ± 4.0 pg/ml, respectively). The measurement 4 hours after the running test showed significant differences. The VEGF value in the mesocephalic dogs increased by 42 % to 10.8 ± 4.7 pg/ml, while in the brachycephalic dogs it increased by 220 % to 22.1 ± 15.3 pg/ml. The EPO measurements showed a significant difference between the mesocephalic and brachycephalic dogs at all blood collection times; The basal value in mesocephalic dogs was approx. three times higher than in brachycephalic dogs (30.1 ± 22.6 mU/ml or 11.4 ± 3.5 mU/ml). However, the difference was not significant due to the large scatter in the mesocephalic dogs (p > 0.05). In contrast to the VEGF value, the EPO value did not change over the measurement period. The study shows that the presented method can be used together with the VEGF value for scientific and breeding purposes.

Wire guided localization is widely used as the standard method of pre-operative localization of breast lesions. The aim was to assess outcomes following the introduction of a novel non-wire guided, magnetic surgical marker navigation system. A prospective study between May 2022 and June 2023 established a data base of the first 200 procedures performed using the Sirius Pintuition GPS Detect magnetic marker. The primary outcome measures were the successful excision of the target lesion and retrieval of the magnetic marker. The primary lesion was excised and the magnetic marker was retrieved in all 200 procedures. In 17 procedures (8.5% of the total sample), the magnetic marker was dislodged during surgery; however, the primary lesion was still effectively excised with clear margins without the need for an additional procedure or radiologic assistance. The re-excision rate to achieve margin clearance was 9%. Insertion of the marker was classified as "easy" and "in contact with the target" by the radiologist in all cases (100%). This study has shown that surgical marker navigation reliably localizes lesions and is associated with low re-excision rates. Introduction: Acute rejection is a significant risk factor for developing chronic lung allograft dysfunction. Current monitoring tools, transbronchial biopsies and HLA antibody determination, have limitations in detecting acute rejection. This study aims to explore the potential utility of donor-derived cell-free DNA (ddcfDNA) as a non-invasive biomarker for detecting acute rejection in lung transplant recipients (LTR)., Methods: We developed a molecular method based on digital droplet PCR to determine the total amount and the proportion of ddcfDNA. Using blood samples collected sequentially post-transplant from a cohort of 81 LTR, we compared median levels of %ddcfDNA in patients with acute cellular rejection (ACR), antibody-mediated rejection (AMR), infection, or decline in pulmonary function (FEV 1 )., Results: Median %ddcfDNA levels were significantly higher in groups with ACR (1.92% [0.70%, 2.30%], p=0.0006), AMR (1.27% [0.34%, 2.29%], p=0.0009), isolated lymphocytic bronchiolitis (0.54% [0.23%, 2.18%], p=0.03), and infection or prolonged ventilation over 30 days (0.50% [0.22%, 2.35%], p=0.005) versus stable allograft function group (0.26% [0.09%, 0.60%]). %ddcfDNA levels were also elevated in patients with FEV1 loss compared to those with stable or improving FEV1 after 12 months (1.98% vs . 1.36%, p=0.04). Background: Lung transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage nonmalignant lung disease. It has become a routine procedure through advances in donor lung preservation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, immunosuppression, intensive care medicine, and follow-up care., Methods: This review is based on publications about lung transplantation that were retrieved by a selective literature search, and on the procedures and experience of two large-volume lung transplantation centers., Results: The mean survival time after lung transplantation is six years, which is the shortest after the transplantation of any solid organ. Chronic graft dysfunction is present in 41% of patients at five years and is the main cause of death after lung transplantation, followed by infection and cancer., Conclusion: Despite all the advances in lung transplantation, acute and - above all - chronic graft dysfunction still pose a major challenge for large-volume transplantation centers. Immunosuppression that is individually tailored to prevent both graft rejection and infection is important for these patients' long-term survival. Xenotransplantation and so-called lung bioengineering may become available in the future as alternatives to allotransplantation.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to examine the impact of ventricular assist device support as a bridge to heart transplantation in children with end-stage heart failure. In light of the limited availability of donor organs, particularly in Europe, the number of children requiring ventricular assist device support is rising at an unavoidable rate., Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent a single and primary pediatric heart transplantation. Patients were divided into two groups: with pre transplant ventricular assist device (VAD) support and without VAD support. The primary outcome was survival at the follow-up evaluation. The time point designated as "time 0" was defined as the time of heart transplantation. Secondary outcome was examined by mean of univariable and multivariable logistic regression, severity of cardiac disease based on ECMO-support pre VAD-support, mean waiting time for transplantation, mean OR time and mean length of hospital stay before and after transplantation., Results: 144 patients could be included in the final analysis. The cumulative survival rate at follow-up period was 67 ± 10% in group 1 vs. 60 ± 6% in group 2 ( P  = 0.769). The mean waiting time (days) on the list was 205 ± 155 in group 1 and 119 ± 69 in group 2 ( P  = 0.002). The mean length of hospital stay (days) was 214 ± 209 in group 1 and 128 ± 91 days in group 2. Early primary-graft-failure was 10% in group 1 and 13% in group 2. Odds ratio [OR] is as follows: 1.992, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.983-1.007, p  = 0.266, aortic clamp time per minutes: OR: 1.008, 95% CI: (0.997-1.019), p  = 0.164, HLM time per minutes: OR: 0.996, 95% CI: (0.991-1.001), p  = 0.146, Operation time per minutes: OR: 1.000, 95% CI: (0.995-1.004), p  = 0.861., Conclusion: The provision of pre-HTx VAD support does not have an adverse effect on the short- and long-term survival of pediatric patients undergoing HTx. A higher mortality rate was observed among children under three months of age with congenital heart disease. The patients who received VAD support were in a critical condition and required more ECMO support. The results demonstrated a statistically significant correlation between prolonged waiting times and length of hospital stay in group 1.
