It has become evident that acute COVID-19 infection can lead to cardiovascular complications. While the exact mechanisms by which COVID-19 affects the cardiovascular system have yet to be fully elucidated, several mechanisms have been proposed, including direct myocardial effects on the virus and systemic inflammation as an indirect result. The cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 have been characterized and described using noninvasive cardiac imaging. The impact of COVID-19 on the cardiovascular system extends beyond the acute phase of the infection and well beyond recovery or the convalescent period. However, the underlying mechanisms of post-viral long-COVID symptoms have yet to be elucidated. It is evident that COVID-19 has become endemic and is here to stay. Future studies are needed (1) to understand the long-term effects of the cardiovascular complications of COVID-19, future cardiovascular events and the impact of mutating variants on cardiovascular complications through data collection and analysis, (2) to identify the most important diagnostic criteria for prognosis of COVID-19 and to understand the disease mechanism through biomarkers and advanced cardiac imaging, including echocardiography and (3) to develop novel strategies to manage and treat these cardiovascular complications using the knowledge gained.

Modern visual perception techniques often rely on multiple heterogeneous sensors to achieve accurate and robust estimates. Knowledge of their relative positions is a mandatory prerequisite to accomplish sensor fusion. Typically, this result is obtained through a calibration procedure that correlates the sensors' measurements. In this context, we focus on LiDAR and RGB sensors that exhibit complementary capabilities. Given the sparsity of LiDAR measurements, current state-of-the-art calibration techniques often rely on complex or large calibration targets to resolve the relative pose estimation. As such, the geometric properties of the targets may hinder the calibration procedure in those cases where an ad hoc environment cannot be guaranteed. This paper addresses the problem of LiDAR-RGB calibration using common calibration patterns (i.e., A3 chessboard) with minimal human intervention. Our approach exploits the flatness of the target to find associations between the sensors' measurements, leading to robust features and retrieval of the solution through nonlinear optimization. The results of quantitative and comparative experiments with other state-of-the-art approaches show that our simple schema performs on par or better than existing methods that rely on complex calibration targets. One of the aspects that affect structure stability is the soil--structure interaction. A good example of this interaction can be witnessed in footings, in which the properties of the soil surrounding the structural parts and the structural parts themselves affect the engineering behavior of the interaction between concrete footings and the soil. Contact stress distribution represents such interaction. However, contact stress distribution beneath concrete footings does not solely rely on the soil type and behavior of footing in working limit state, but also on the variation in the concrete footings stiffness after cracking. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of the reduction in the concrete footing stiffness due to cracking on the contact stress distribution beneath concentric isolated footings resting on cohesive soil. In this respect, numerical simulation and validation was carried out using a non-linear finite element program 'Abaqus'. A parametric study was conducted to extend this study by including soil cohesion, internal friction angle, rebars yield strength, and foundation depth as investigated parameters. The concrete foundation behavior and failure mode were analyzed. The findings of this research indicate that the different variations of cracks in reinforced concrete showed different shapes of contact stress distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The wrist is a complex joint that plays a role in several everyday tasks. Various radiological indices have been created to assess the alignment and structure of the wrist using standard X-ray images. Nevertheless, these indicators may differ based on variables such as age, gender, ethnicity, handedness, and wrist position. This research aimed to assess the radiological indices of the wrist in a group of healthy people from Jordan and investigate the impact of age and gender on these indices., Methods: We obtained data from a sample of 385 patients who presented at our hospital with minor non-specific wrist pain and satisfied the specified criteria for inclusion. We conducted measurements of radial inclination, radial height, volar tilt, ulnar variance, and carpal height ratio using both anteroposterior and lateral views of the wrist. We used linear regression and independent sample t-test to examine the correlation between age, gender, and radiological indicators. The reliability of the measurements was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)., Results: Our study revealed a negative correlation between age and carpal height ratio (r = -0.13, p = 0.03). However, no significant gender differences were seen in any of the radiological indices (p > 0.05). Our findings indicate that ulnar variance had the greatest level of reliability across observers, with an intra-observer intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.95 and an inter-observer ICC of 0.8. Conversely, volar tilt exhibited the lowest inter-observer reliability, with an ICC of 0.1.Our results provide a valuable point of reference for the wrist morphology and alignment in the Jordanian population. Our suggestion is that the carpal height ratio might indicate alterations in the wrist joint due to aging, whereas ulnar variation may serve as a dependable indicator of wrist alignment. We suggest doing more research to investigate the biological and anatomical factors behind these results and to compare them with other demographic groups.

Background: Group A Streptococcus is responsible for severe and potentially lethal invasive conditions requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission, such as streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome (STSS). A rebound of invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infection after COVID-19-associated barrier measures has been observed in children. Several intensivists of French adult ICUs have reported similar bedside impressions without objective data. We aimed to compare the incidence of iGAS infection before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, describe iGAS patients' characteristics, and determine ICU mortality associated factors., Methods: We performed a retrospective multicenter cohort study in 37 French ICUs, including all patients admitted for iGAS infections for two periods: two years before period (October 2018 to March 2019 and October 2019 to March 2020) and a one-year after period (October 2022 to March 2023) COVID-19 pandemic. iGAS infection was defined by Group A Streptococcus isolation from a normally sterile site. iGAS infections were identified using the International Classification of Diseases and confirmed with each center's microbiology laboratory databases. The incidence of iGAS infections was expressed in case rate., Results: Two hundred and twenty-two patients were admitted to ICU for iGAS infections: 73 before and 149 after COVID-19 pandemic. Their case rate during the period before and after COVID-19 pandemic was 205 and 949/100,000 ICU admissions, respectively (p < 0.001), with more frequent STSS after the COVID-19 pandemic (61% vs. 45%, p = 0.015). iGAS patients (n = 222) had a median SOFA score of 8 (5-13), invasive mechanical ventilation and norepinephrine in 61% and 74% of patients. ICU mortality in iGAS patients was 19% (14% before and 22% after COVID-19 pandemic; p = 0.135). In multivariate analysis, invasive mechanical ventilation (OR = 6.08 (1.71-21.60), p = 0.005), STSS (OR = 5.75 (1.71-19.22), p = 0.005), acute kidney injury (OR = 4.85 (1.05-22.42), p = 0.043), immunosuppression (OR = 4.02 (1.03-15.59), p = 0.044), and diabetes (OR = 3.92 (1.42-10.79), p = 0.008) were significantly associated with ICU mortality., Conclusion: The incidence of iGAS infections requiring ICU admission increased by 4 to 5 after the COVID-19 pandemic.
