Purpose: The Spinal Appearance Questionnaire (SAQ) is a widely validated tool for assessing perceptions of spinal deformity in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients. This study aimed to develop and validate a Greek version of the SAQ (GR-SAQ)., Methods: A cross-cultural adaptation of the SAQ following international guidelines was performed. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were evaluated. Convergent validity was assessed by correlating the GR-SAQ with the Appearance domain of Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) and the Cobb angle with the Trunk Shift domain of GR-SAQ. Divergent validity was examined through the relationship between GR-SAQ, patient characteristics, and clinical measures including Cobb angle, DIERS Formetric 4D angle, and scoliometer readings., Results: The study included 61 AIS patients (52 females, 13.91 ± 2.57 years, 25.33 ± 10.14° Cobb angle). GR-SAQ exhibited good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.794) and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.931, 95%CI: 0.880-0.960). Correlations between GR-SAQ and SRS-22 showed a low-to-moderate negative correlation (r = -0.351, p = 0.006). The Trunk Shift domain moderately correlated with the Cobb Angle (r = 0.393, p = 0.002). Divergent validity analyses did not demonstrate statistical significance (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: The GR-SAQ is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating spinal deformity perception in Greek AIS patients., (© 2024. Purpose: The psychological effects of scoliosis bracing can be difficult, and thus clinicians sometimes recommend a brace holiday when the curve corrects to less than 25°. However, the clinical indications for taking a break from the brace before reaching maturity have yet to be described. We hypothesized there would be a relationship between brace holiday eligibility and degree of curve at presentation, change in curve magnitude while bracing, and level of bracing compliance., Methods: A retrospective cohort study at a single institution was performed from 2016 to 2022. Objective brace compliance I-button data were collected on patients aged 3-9 years old. Patients with other etiologies besides idiopathic scoliosis before the age of 10 were excluded. Binary logistic regression was performed to determine the effect of significant variables on the likelihood of brace holiday., Results: Fifty-six patients met inclusion criteria. Of these, 20 were able to get a brace holiday. Patients with higher brace compliance and larger in-brace curve correction were more likely to get a brace holiday (P = 0.015, 0.004). Patients with higher BMIs and larger curves at initial presentation were less likely to get a brace holiday (P = 0.002, 0.014)., Conclusion: Compliant brace wearers with good in-brace correction are most likely to be eligible for a brace holiday. While some elements remain immutable, others are modifiable, such as bracing compliance. Understanding how outcomes differ between patients who do and do not take a brace holiday will be crucial to elucidating if the psychological benefit of taking a break from the brace can be justified., (© 2024. Purpose: The goal of this study is to characterize the self-reported prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities among patients with adolescent scoliosis., Methods: Eligible patients across the US were surveyed using ResearchMatch, a validated online platform. The survey collected patient demographics, type of scoliosis, scoliosis treatment received, and the mental health diagnoses and interventions., Results: Nearly all (98%) of the 162 respondents were patients themselves, the remainder of which were parents. The majority of whom were female (93%), Caucasian (85%), and diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis (63%). The median age of diagnosis was 13 (IQR 11-18). Most respondents had mild to moderate scoliosis (65%), and 17% received surgical treatment. 76 of 158 (48%) responded that scoliosis affected their overall mental health, and 92 (58%) had received a mental health diagnosis-76% were diagnosed after their scoliosis diagnosis. Of the 92 with mental health diagnoses, the most common diagnoses were clinical depression (83%), anxiety (71%), negative body image (62%). Over 80% of patients received medical treatment or therapy. Of those with depression, 38.4% received counseling and 45.2% received medication. 52% of the respondents also had immediate family members with mental health diagnoses, with siblings (48%) having the highest proportion., Conclusion: According to the CDC, the prevalence of US teenagers with diagnosed depression was found to be 3.9% and anxiety disorder to be 4.7%, notably higher among adolescent girls. In this national sample, over half of adolescent scoliosis patients report psychiatric comorbidity, often diagnosed years later. The most prevalent psychiatric condition is depression, anxiety, and body-image disturbances. These findings highlight the importance of awareness of the psychiatric impact of adolescent scoliosis, and importance of screening and treatment of comorbid mental health conditions., Level of Evidence: IV., (© 2024. Background: The Scoliosis Research Society SRS-22 questionnaire is a standard tool to assess the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in scoliosis patients but, because of cultural differences limited use among Arabic patients. The aim is to perform a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of Arabic version of Scoliosis Japanese Questionnaire-27 and test it on Saudi patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)., Methods: This a cross sectional study run between July 2021 and December 2022 recruited 194 patients. The cross-cultural adaptation process was performed using the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) Outcomes Committee method. All patients had completed the Arabic version of Scoliosis Japanese Questionnaire-27 and SF-12 preoperatively and 3-month postoperatively. The validity and internal consistency were tested using the Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Cronbach alpha, Pearson correlation coefficient, and confidence interval (CI)., Results: We analyzed the result of 194 female adolescent patients. The average age is 14 ± 2.4 years (range from 10 to 21 years). The majority of patients have a Lenke type 1 curve (54 %). The overall Cronbach alpha (CA) of all domains of Scoliosis Japanese Questionnaire-27 is 0.92. However, the Cronbach alpha for the mental health (Q17,18,20,21,23,24) and, self-image (Q12-14,22,25,26) are 0.93 and 0.84 respectively., Conclusion: The Arabic version of Scoliosis Japanese Questionnaire-27 is a reliable and valid instrument and can be applied to evaluate the quality of life in patients with AIS., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest No potential conflict of interest relevant to this article was reported. Introduction: Thoracolumbar adolescent idiopathic scoliosis can continue to progress beyond skeletal maturity. Ideal timing of surgery remains undefined. Earlier intervention, with shorter instrumentation, incurs early partial loss of lumbar motion. Waiting for progression incurs a greater risk of extensive arthrodesis. The aim of the present study was to assess the quality-of-life impact of age and scoliosis severity at surgery., Material and Methods: Patients with Lenke 5 or 6 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, aged 16-45years, were analyzed based on a prospective clinical registry. Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-22 scores were collected preoperatively and at 6months, 1year and 2years. Coronal and sagittal alignments were measured on full-spine radiographs, and curve flexibility was assessed on bending radiographs. A mixed linear model was used to assess the impact of age, Cobb angle and flexibility on quality of life., Results: Thirty-six patients were included. Mean ODI was 20.5% preoperatively and 13.8% at 2years (p=0.017). Mean SRS-22 was 3.2 preoperatively and 3.9 at 2years (p<0.001). Mean Cobb angle was 56.6° preoperatively and 23.2° at 2years (p<0.001), with mean preoperative reducibility of 68.1%. Age and ODI correlated preoperatively (r=0.6; p<0.001) and at 6months (r=0.5; p=0.002), as did age and SRS-22 (r=-0.6; p<0.001 and r=-0.6; p<0.001, respectively). Linear regression found a significant negative correlation between thoracolumbar Cobb angle and change in SRS-22 at 6months., Discussion: In 16-45 year-olds with Lenke 5 or 6 idiopathic scoliosis, age influenced SRS-22 score. Younger patients had better quality of life both pre- and post-operatively. Curve magnitude influenced postoperative score. Background and Objectives : Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) affects individuals aged 10-18 years and is characterized by spinal deformity, three-dimensional axis deformation, and vertebral rotation. Schroth method exercises and braces have been shown to reduce the Cobb angle and halt spinal deformity progression. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of a 12-month, supervised Schroth exercise program on scoliosis severity and quality of life in adolescents with AIS. Materials and Methods : Eighty adolescents with AIS (aged 10-17 years) were prescribed a brace and were divided into two groups. The intervention group followed a supervised Schroth exercise program three times a week for 12 months in addition to wearing a brace. The control group used only the brace. Outcomes included the Cobb angle of the main curvature and the sum of curves using radiography, the maximum angle of trunk rotation (ATR maximum, using a scoliometer), and quality of life with the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire. Evaluations were conducted at baseline, after 12 months, and 6 months post-intervention. A multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used for statistical analysis ( p -Value < 0.05). Results : The intervention group showed statistically significant improvement compared to the control group in the 12th month in Cobb angle (mean differences, 95% CI: -3.65 (-5.81, -1.53), p -Value < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.30), ATR maximum (mean differences, 95% CI: -3.05 (-3.86, -2.23), p -Value < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.74), and SRS-22 score (mean differences, 95% CI: 0.87 (0.60, 1.13), p -Value < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.58). Differences in ATR maximum and SRS-22 score remained significant at the 18-month measurement. No significant differences were found between groups in the sum of curves ( p -Value > 0.05). Conclusions : A 12-month supervised Schroth exercise program in AIS patients undergoing brace treatment significantly improves scoliosis severity (Cobb angle and ATR maximum) and quality of life. Improvements were greater than those in shorter-duration studies, suggesting a linear dose-response relationship. Further clinical studies are needed to clarify the impact of long-term Schroth programs.

Background: Meeting the 24-hour movement behavior (24-HMB) guideline helps enhance quality of life (QOL) of adolescents. This study aimed to assess the associations between the 24-HMB (physical activity, screen time, sleep) and QOL among adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2021 and September 2023. 24-HMB, QOL and demographic variables were collected through a self-reported questionnaire. Linear regression models and stratified analyses were used to explore statistical associations between the 24-HMB and QOL., Results: A total of 1073 participants aged 10-18 years with a spinal Cobb angle between 10° and 40° were included. Overall, 20 participants (1.9%) met all three behavioral guidelines, and 272 participants (25.3%) met none. Compared to those who did not meet any of the guidelines, adolescents meeting both screen time and sleep duration (β = 4.10, 95% CI: 2.02-6.18, P < 0.001) and all 3 guidelines (β = 4.39, 95% CI: 0.27-8.51, P = 0.037) had higher QOL scores. Stratified analyses showed that the above associations were more pronounced in adolescents without back pain or with good self-image., Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of adopting and maintaining healthy behavioral habits in order to improve QOL among adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis, especially in those without back pain or with good self-image., (© 2024. Purpose: To perform a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Brazilian-Portuguese versions of the Brace Questionnaire in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis., Methods: A forward-backward translation process was employed to produce a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Brace Questionnaire, followed by comprehensive cross-cultural adaptation stages. The measurements of internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed by Cronbach's a and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the concurrent validity by comparison with the Scoliosis Research Society-22r questionnaire., Results: A total of 84 scoliosis patients (age 13.4 ± 2.0 years, thoracic Cobb angle 33.3° ± 13.8°, and lumbar Cobb angle 29.8° ± 14.3°) were included. The Brace Questionnaire showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.93) and moderate reliability (ICC = 0.86). The correlations between the Brace Questionnaire and Scoliosis Research Society-22 were r = 0.66; p = 0.011. In addition, it was found that the Brazilian version of the Brace Questionnaire does not have ceiling and floor effects., Conclusions: The Brazilian-Portuguese adaptation of the brace questionnaire shows excellent reliability and can be a valid tool for psychometric assessment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis., (© 2024. Purpose: To review the current literature surrounding the assessment of self-image in pediatric and adult spinal deformity., Methods: The literature were reviewed for studies examining patient-reported outcome measurements (PROM) and self-image in pediatric and adult spinal deformity. PROM performance metrics were collected and described. The relationships between self-image PROM and patient outcomes, including satisfaction, were described., Results: Several self-image PROM exist, including the Scoliosis Research Society-22r (SRS-22r) self-image domain, the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire (BIDQ), and the Spinal Appearance Questionnaire (SAQ). The most commonly used is the self-image domain of the SRS-22r. It is validated in adult and pediatric spinal deformity and is correlated with patient desire for surgery and satisfaction after surgery. This domain is limited by floor and ceiling effects., Conclusion: Self-image assessment is critical to both pediatric and adult spinal deformity surgeries. The SRS-22r self-image domain is the most frequently reported PROM for this health domain. While valid in both surgical cohorts, this PROM is affected by floor and ceiling effects which limits the ability to discriminate between health states. Given the overall importance of this domain to patients with spinal deformity further efforts are needed to improve discrimination without gross increases in PROM question burden, which may limit broad acceptance and use., (© 2024. Study Design: Retrospective review of a prospectively collected multicenter registry., Objective: To evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measures in an operative cohort of patients (OP) and compare them with a matched nonoperative cohort (NON)., Summary of Background Data: Historically, the surgical outcomes of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have been radiographically evaluated. However, the importance of HRQOL measures and their impact on surgical outcomes are increasingly being understood., Materials and Methods: We identified 90 NON patients with curves in the operative range who were observed for at least two years. These patients were matched with an OP cohort of 689 patients. All patients completed the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire at the initial evaluation and at a minimum of two-year follow-up. Subgroup comparisons were based on curve type: primary thoracic (Th), primary thoracolumbar/lumbar (TL/L), and double major (DM) curves., Results: The preoperative major curves in the Th, TL/L, and DM OP subgroups averaged 50.4°, 45.4°, and 51.5°, respectively, and 49.4°, 43.7°, and 48.9° in the NON cohort ( P >0.05). At two years postoperatively, the major curve in the Th, TL/L, and DM OP subgroups improved to 19.0°, 19.2°, and 19.3°, respectively, compared with the progression to 51.3°, 44.5°, and 49.7° in the NON group at two-year follow-up ( P <0.05). The SRS-22 self-image, mental health, satisfaction, and total scores at the two-year follow-up were significantly better in all OP subgroups ( P <0.001) but remained largely unchanged in the NON group. A significant percentage of patients ( P <0.001) in the OP cohort reported better SRS-22 scores at the two-year follow-up in the self-image, mental health, and satisfaction domains than the NON group at two years., Conclusions: Surgically treated patients with AIS have improved HRQOL outcomes in several domains compared with age-matched and curve magnitude-matched nonoperatively treated patients at two-year follow-up., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Background: The prognosis of surgically treated subjects with early onset scoliosis (EOS) into adulthood has been lacking. We aimed to investigate the patients' perspectives on satisfaction with surgical treatment., Methodology: We included all surgical candidates with EOS who had undergone index spinal surgery for scoliosis correction between 2009 and 2013. The minimum duration of postoperative follow-up was 10 years at the time of survey completion. Three questionnaires were used in this study, comprising the revised Scoliosis Research Society questionnaire (SRS-22r), the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS-29), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF). Measures of treatment satisfaction were retrieved from SRS-22r., Results: There were 29 participants who completed the survey, and thereby included in the study (i.e., a response rate of 43% and a dropout rate of 6%). Amongst them, 14, 11, and 4 individuals received posterior spinal fusion (PSF), magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGR), and traditional growing rods, respectively. The average duration after the index spinal surgery was 12.6 ± 2.2 years. Our findings revealed that self-image (across all treatment groups), sleep disruption (only in PSF), and social aspects (in both PSF and MCGR) were significantly worse when compared to the normative values. According to the multivariable linear regression model (R-square = 0.690, p < .001), an increase in SRS-22r mental health (p = .008) and PROMIS-29 social participation scores (p = .004) corresponded to 0.511 and 0.055 points increases in satisfaction. Every unit increase in PROMIS-29 fatigue (p = .043) and WHOQOL-BREF physical domain scores (p = .007) was in conjunction with 0.019 and 0.040 points decreases in satisfaction. SRS-22r self-image (p = .056) and WHOQOL-BREF environmental domain scores (p = .076) were included in the model but did not reach statistical significance., Conclusions: To improve the long term quality of life in surgical candidates with EOS, we demonstrated that mental health, social participation, fatigue, and physical health were significant factors associated with treatment satisfaction. Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis affects 2-4% of adolescents aged 10-16, while Scheuermann's kyphosis affects 0.4-10% of adolescents aged 11 to 16. Over the past 50 years, brace treatment has been recommended as the most common non-surgical intervention for treating these spinal deformities. The effectiveness of brace treatment depends on the duration of brace wearing. This study aimed to understand the brace compliance process for adolescents with spinal deformities through a qualitative approach., Method: This study applied multicenter exploratory qualitative research with an interpretative framework and enlisted the participation of as many individuals as possible involved in brace-wearing in adolescents with spinal deformities. Semi-structured, in-depth, and face-to-face interviews and telephone conversations from September 2020 to May 2021 were conducted. The recorded audio of each interview was typed into Word software with each personal code. The content analysis method was used to analyze the data., Results: Seventy-four participants were interviewed, including 32 adolescents treated with braces and their parents (27 mothers, five fathers), six orthotists, two physiotherapists, and two spine surgeons. Following data analysis, four main categories, 14 categories, and 69 subcategories of 2403 related codes were discovered., Conclusion: Based on the analysis of the current qualitative research, adolescents with spinal deformities experience extensive challenges in the treatment process, which can affect the results and brace intervention efficacy. The current research findings showed that every adolescent goes through similar but unique conditions during the treatment. Spinal fusion surgery is one of the most common major surgical procedures in youth. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most frequent reason for corrective spinal fusion. AIS (∼25%-47% of cases) and spinal fusion surgeries are associated with pain, including the development of new onset chronic pain for up to 15% of youth. This research used photovoice approaches to explore the journeys of youth from before, during, and after spinal fusion surgery, to demonstrate their experiences both of and beyond pain. Twenty participants were recruited from a previous study conducted by the senior author's lab. Participants captured photos/videos in their daily life (Phase 1); collected previously taken photos/videos from before/during/after their surgery (Phase 2); and participated in individual interviews to reflexively discuss the meaning behind photos/videos (Phase 3). Before interviews, a questionnaire was administered to assess pain characteristics. Nineteen girls/women with scoliosis and one boy/man with kyphosis (12-19 years old, M age = 16 years) participated; they identified as white (80%), other (15%), and Southeast Asian (5%). The researchers used a reflexive thematic analysis approach, which generated five themes: (1) body aesthetic versus machine; (2) expectations and anticipation of surgery/outcomes; (3) desire of normalcy and freedom; (4) navigating a hoped-for positive surgery experience; and (5) the journey sculpts identity formation and sense of self. Findings support youth advocacy, underscoring the need to validate youth concerns and inform healthcare professionals of the importance of individualized care. Objective: Although the advantages of postoperative braces have been verified in many fields, it is not clear whether postoperative braces can help reduce patients' adverse psychological emotions such as kinesiophobia, anxiety, and depression. This study aims to analyze whether the use of a postoperative brace helps reduce adverse psychological emotions in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients undergoing spinal deformity surgeries., Methods: All consecutive patients who underwent spinal corrective surgeries at our institution between April 2023 and July 2023 formed the prospective cohort. Outcome measures were collected in the preoperative period, 3 months after surgery, and 6 months after surgery. All patients were assessed using the Tampa scale for kinesiophobia (TSK), the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), and the numerical rating scale (NRS). A statistical model of propensity score matching was used to eliminate potential selection bias and maintain comparability. Multivariate linear regression models were used to determine the relationship between postoperative brace and adverse psychological emotions., Results: After propensity score matching, this study ultimately enrolled 150 patients. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of demographic and perioperative variables. The fully adjusted model showed that the TSK scores of the non-brace group at the 3-month (ꞵ = 2.50, 95% CI 0.80-4.20, p = 0.005) and 6-month follow-up (ꞵ = 2.75, 95% CI 0.75-4.74, p = 0.007) were significantly higher than those of the brace group. The HADS score of the non-brace group at the 3-month follow-up was significantly higher than that of the brace group (ꞵ = 1.75, 95% CI 0.28-3.22, p = 0.019). The NRS score of the non-brace group at the 3-month follow-up was significantly higher than that of the brace group (ꞵ = 0.69, 95% CI 0.05-1.33, p = 0.034). At the 6-month follow-up, there were no significant difference for HADS score or NRS score between the two groups., Conclusion: In the early postoperative period, the postoperative brace could provide AIS patients with psychological supports and help them reduce the frequency of adverse psychological emotions. The postoperative brace could continuously improve the fear of movement within 6 months after surgery, and help reduce anxiety, depression, and pain within 3 months after surgery., (© 2024 The Author(s). Objective: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most prevalent spinal deformity affecting healthy children. Although AIS typically lacks symptomatic manifestations, its resultant deformities can affect patients' quality of life (QoL). Evaluating QoL and stress levels is crucial in determining the optimal brace type for AIS patients; however, research comparing the effectiveness of different brace types in this regard is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of Boston versus Chêneau braces on QoL and stress levels in AIS patients., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a medical institution in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, involving 52 eligible patients selected through stratified random sampling based on type of brace as the main stratum. The inclusion criteria were idiopathic scoliosis, age ≥ 10 years, bracing for at least 3 months, and no history of cancer. QoL was evaluated according to the revised Scoliosis Research Society 22-item questionnaire (SRS-22r) and stress levels according to the eight-item Bad Sobernheim stress questionnaire (BSSQ-Brace). Independent-sample t-tests were used to compare brace-related QoL and stress level according to participants' sex and brace type., Results: Overall, 32 participants were treated with Boston braces (seven men and 25 women), with a median (IQR) age of 11.00 years (10.00-13.00), and 20 participants were treated with Chêneau braces (three men, 17 women), with a median (IQR) age of 12.50 years (10.00-14.25). The total SRS-22 score was not significantly different between the brace groups (p = 0.158). However, patients in the Boston brace group reported significantly higher satisfaction levels (median = 4.00, IQR = 3.50-4.50) than did those in the Chêneau brace group (median = 3.25, IQR = 2.38-4.13, p = 0.013, moderate effect size = 0.345, 95% CI = 0.060 to 0.590). Furthermore, the BSSQ-brace total score was significantly higher in the Boston brace group (median = 9.00, IQR = 8.00-12.00) than in the Chêneau brace group (median = 7.50, IQR = 4.75-10.00, p = 0.007, moderate effect size = 0.376, 95% CI = 0.130 to 0.590), indicating higher stress levels in the Chêneau brace group., Conclusion: The QoL in AIS patients undergoing brace treatment was comparable across groups. Nonetheless, patients who used Chêneau braces experienced higher stress levels and lower treatment satisfaction rates than did those who used Boston braces. The Quality of Life Profile for spinal deformities (QLPSD) was developed to evaluate the quality of life of patients with scoliosis and other spinal deformities. The purpose of the study was to systematically translate the QLPSD into Turkish and examine the reliability and validity of the Turkish version. This methodological study was conducted with 125 participants with idiopathic scoliosis. After the translation of the QLPSD into Turkish systematically, all participants answered the Turkish version of the QLPSD (T-QLPSD) and Scoliosis Research Society-22 items (SRS-22) questionnaires. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's α statistics were used to test the reliability of the tools: convergent and construct validity of the tools was assessed using exploratory factor analysis and Pearson's correlation analysis. One hundred twenty-five participants were included in the study. The mean age of them was 13.7 ± 2.2 years. For the T-QLPSD total score, Cronbach's α was 0.91, and the ICC was 0.94. A very good correlation was found between T-QLPSD and SRS-22 total scores (r = -0.71). Participants with mild scoliosis reported less back pain (P = .038), better back flexibility (P=.001), and body image (P=.044) compared to moderate scoliosis. The T-QLPSD was found to be a reliable and valid scale for assessing quality of life in idiopathic scoliotic patients in Türkiye.

Objective: The 24-item Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) is validated in patients with early onset scoliosis (EOS) aged 0 to 18 years and the 22-item Scoliosis Research Society (SRS-22) questionnaire is validated in idiopathic scoliosis patients 10 years and older. EOSQ-24 is completed by the caregiver and SRS-22 is completed by the patient. A prior study comparing patient-reported outcome measures completed by older pediatric patients and their parents showed a low level of agreement. Our purpose was to compare EOSQ-24 and SRS-22 scores completed at the same time point and at subsequent time points, in patients aged 5 to 18 years with idiopathic or congenital EOS without developmental delay., Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective study. We identified pairs of EOSQ-24 and SRS-22 completed on the same day or within 6 months. Some patients had multiple pairs of surveys over time. EOSQ-24 and SRS-22 questions were matched and domain scores for Pain, Function, Mental Health, and Satisfaction were compared. Patients with a change in treatment between surveys were excluded. Pearson correlation coefficients ( r ) were used to compare domain scores, with r ≥0.7 indicating a strong relationship., Results: There were 228 patient-caregiver dyads who completed 411 pairs of EOSQ-24 and SRS-22 on the same day. A strong correlation was found only for the Pain domain ( r =0.77). Function, Mental Health, and Satisfaction domains had positive but not strong correlations ( r = 0.58, r = 0.50, r = 0.41, respectively). Subanalysis based on age also showed a strong correlation only for Pain. There were 76 patient-caregiver dyads who completed 134 pairs of surveys with SRS-22 completed within 6 months after an EOSQ-24. All domains demonstrated a positive but not strong correlation, with Pain showing the highest correlation ( r = 0.64)., Conclusions: EOSQ-24 and SRS-22 had a strong correlation only for Pain when completed at the same time point. EOSQ-24 and SRS-22 completed within 6 months lacked a strong correlation for all domains. Our findings suggest that parents and children with EOS may not share the same perspective on their health. Background: EOSQ-24 is a parent proxy questionnaire designed to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of early-onset scoliosis (EOS) patients during their childhood years. EOSQ-SELF, a novel self-reported questionnaire, assesses HRQoL in older children (>8 y) and adolescents. So far, the same group of EOS patients has not been evaluated with both EOSQ-24 and EOSQ-SELF. The aim of this study was to evaluate how the same pathology was reflected in the parent and patient at different time points by comparing the answers to the common questions between EOSQ-24 and EOSQ-SELF., Methods: A group of otherwise healthy EOS patients whose parents filled out EOSQ-24 at the early phase of growth-friendly treatment was re-tested by the EOSQ-SELF questionnaire at the end of treatment. Both EOSQ-24 and EOSQ-SELF are validated in Turkish. Inclusion criteria were patients with EOS, independent ambulation, age of 8 years or older at EOSQ-SELF enrollment, literacy in Turkish, no apparent intellectual impairment, and a minimum of 24 months after graduation. The common questions between the 2 surveys with nearly identical phrasings were extracted. Common items from the 2 tests were compared with a Wilcoxon signed rank test., Results: Twenty-one patients (15 females, 6 males) who previously filled out EOSQ-24 met the inclusion criteria. The mean age of the group was 10 (5 to 16) years at EOSQ-24 participation and 18 (13 to 24) at the final analysis. Fourteen questions were found common in 10 domains. The scores were significantly different in 5 questions of 4 domains. EOSQ-SELF had significantly less favorable scores in the pain/discomfort, pulmonary function, and fatigue/energy level domains. Scores in the parental burden/relationships domain were significantly higher (P<0.05)., Conclusions: The self-reported group had a general trend of worse results. Parents and caregivers may not accurately perceive the problems of EOS patients. Our findings indicate a disconnect between caregivers and the patients, as both parties underreported the other side in some domains. Background: EOSQ-24 is a disease specific patient-reported outcome score used to assess the quality of life in patients with early-onset scoliosis. The aim of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the English version of the EOSQ-24 to Finnish language and to assess the reliability and validity of the translation., Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation and cross-cultural validation were performed to the Finnish translation of the EOSQ-24. Patients and/or their caretakers were then recruited to assess the psychometric properties of the translation. We assessed the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, floor and ceiling effects, and discriminative abilities. One-hundred-and-three patients filled the questionnaire., Results: EOSQ-24 was successfully translated into Finnish. The translation showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach alpha 0.94), satisfactory item-total correlations ranging from 0.6 to 0.9, and moderate to strong inter item correlations. Test-retest reliability ranged from 0.7 to 0.96 indicating good to excellent agreement. Patients with neuromuscular and syndromic scoliosis reported lower EOSQ-24 scores when compared to patients' idiopathic and congenital scoliosis. There was a significant negative correlation between major curve and EOSQ-24 scores in patients with idiopathic early onset scoliosis., Conclusion: The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the measure were found to be satisfactory. Purpose: Our objective was to collect the experience and current attitude of those patients, now adults, operated on for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) more than 25 years ago with CD instrumentation (CDI)., Methods: Prospective qualitative cross-sectional study with interpretive phenomenological analysis approach of AIS patients operated in a single center with CDI between 1985 and 1995. Patients underwent a semi-structured interview with their original surgeon. Seven agreed themes were open for conversation, and several subthemes emerged related to their experience during their journey in life. Filed notes were recorded and transcribed verbatim. We used the method of content, semantic and pragmatic analysis., Results: We contacted 103 patients, 100 agreed to participate. Mean age was 47.5 ± 3.3, mean follow-up was 30.9 ± 2.7 years. Three fundamental concerns stood out: discomfort with self-image; low back pain with daily activities; and lack of spinal flexibility. 50% were engaged in continuous physical exercise, and only some referred limitations with load-bearing work. Patients commonly described negative memories of the conservative treatment, but positive memories of the surgical process. In general, there was a good adaptation to social life (occupation, social and family relationships). Two-thirds were married, and 65 women had offspring. A frequent concern was the excess of radiographs over the years, and three developed breast cancer., Conclusions: Factors such as dissatisfaction with self-image, low back pain, and spine stiffness were relevant to patients throughout their journeys. Background Context: Congenital and juvenile scoliosis are both early-onset deformities that develop before the age of 10. Children are treated to prevent curve progression and problems in adulthood such as back pain and a decreased quality of life but literature on long-term outcomes remains scarce., Purpose: To evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and potential disability of children with congenital scoliosis (CS) or juvenile idiopathic scoliosis (JIS) after a minimum of 20 years follow-up., Study Design: Comparative cohort study., Patient Sample: A consecutive cohort of CS and JIS patients were retrospectively identified from a single-center scoliosis database. Patients born between 1968 and 1981 and treated during skeletal growth were eligible for participation., Outcome Measures: HRQoL (SF-36, SRS-22r, ODI)., Methods: The primary aim was to evaluate the HRQoL of CS and JIS patients using the general SF-36 questionnaire. Both patient cohorts were compared with age-matched national norms. The secondary aim was to analyze the differences between conservatively and surgically treated patients using the scoliosis-specific Scoliosis Research Society-22r questionnaire (SRS-22r) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). T-tests were used for statistical comparison., Results: In total, 114 patients (67% of the eligible patients) completed the questionnaire, with a mean follow-up of 25.5±5.5 years after their final clinical follow-up. Twenty-nine patients with CS were included with a mean age of 44.4±3.8 years (79.3% female), and 85 patients with JIS with a mean age of 43.7±4.2 years (89.4% female). Of the SF-36 domains, only the vitality score (60.6±18.0 for CS and 58.1±17.6 for JIS cohort) and mental health score (70.0±18.4 for CS and 72.1±18.1 for JIS cohort) were significantly lower compared with the general population (68.6±19.3 for vitality, and 76.8±17.4 for mental health). These decreased scores were larger than the determined minimum clinically important difference threshold of 4.37. Surgically treated JIS patients had a significantly lower score on the SRS-22r pain domain than their nonsurgically treated peers (3.6±0.9 vs 4.1±0.7l p=.019). Surgically treated CS patients had a significantly higher score on the SRS-22r mental health domain than their nonsurgically treated peers (4.3±0.5 vs 3.5±1.0; p=.023). No significant differences were found in the other domains., Conclusions: Except for vitality and mental health domains, congenital and juvenile idiopathic scoliosis patients treated during skeletal growth had similar HRQoL on most SF-36 domains in adulthood compared with national norms. Surgical treated JIS patients experienced more pain compared with brace treated patients, while braced CS patients had a significantly lower mental scores compared with surgical treated patients. Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine with the large majority of cases classed as idiopathic, meaning there is no known cause. Typically, most cases occur in children and young people affecting approximately three per cent of the adult populace with five out of six cases being female. The BackBone: Interdisciplinary Creative Practices and Body Positive Resilience pilot research study used arts and humanities methods to measure the impact of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) on well-being and body perception. The research aimed to contribute to a better understanding of alternative treatments towards improving quality of life in young women diagnosed with AIS. In particular, concentrating on two highlighted priorities from the Scoliosis Priority Setting Partnership: (1) How is quality of life affected by scoliosis and its treatment? How can we measure this in ways that are meaningful to patients? (2) How are the psychological impacts (including on body image) of diagnosis and treatment best managed.Using established medical techniques, art-based workshops, and focus groups with postoperative participants with AIS and their families we gathered both quantitative and qualitative data. The workshops explored the aesthetics of imperfection through material investigations that focus on the body as both an object and how it is experienced using the metaphor of tree images. Drawing parallels between the growth patterns of trees that, for complex and often unknown reasons, have grown unexpectedly we explored questions around ideological notions of perfect growth through art-making in a non-clinical setting. Objective: Depression has been implicated with worse immediate postoperative outcomes in adult spinal deformity (ASD) correction, yet the specific impact of depression on those patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery (MIS) requires further clarity. This study aimed to evaluate the role of depression in the recovery of patients with ASD after undergoing MIS., Methods: Patients who underwent MIS for ASD with a minimum postoperative follow-up of 1 year were included from a prospectively collected, multicenter registry. Two cohorts of patients were identified that consisted of either those affirming or denying depression on preoperative assessment. The patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) compared included scores on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), numeric rating scale (NRS) for back and leg pain, Scoliosis Research Society Outcomes Questionnaire (SRS-22), SF-36 physical component summary, SF-36 mental component summary (MCS), EQ-5D, and EQ-5D visual analog scale., Results: Twenty-seven of 147 (18.4%) patients screened positive for preoperative depression. The nondepressed cohort had an average of 4.83 levels fused, and the depressed cohort had 5.56 levels fused per patient (p = 0.267). At 1-year follow-up, 10 patients still reported depression, representing a 63% decrease. Postoperatively, both cohorts demonstrated improvement in their PROMs; however, at 1-year follow-up, those without depression had statistically better outcomes based on the EQ-5D, MCS, and SRS-22 scores (p < 0.05). Patients with depression continued to experience higher NRS leg scores at 1-year follow-up (3.63 vs 2.22, p = 0.018). After controlling for covariates, the authors found that depression significantly impacted only 1-year follow-up MCS scores (β = 8.490, p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Depressed and nondepressed patients reported similar improvements after MIS surgery, except MCS scores were more likely to improve in nondepressed patients.

Aim: To evaluate the quality of life of patients with postural kyphosis (PK) compared with those adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann Kyphosis (SK)., Material and Methods: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of adolescents with PK who were admitted to our clinic between January 2020 and June 2022 was compared with that of patients with AIS and SK who were admitted during the same period by using the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire. All patients were asked to complete the SRS-22 questionnaire before the radiological evaluation. In the radiological evaluation, the sagittal and coronal deformities of the patients were measured., Results: In total, 126 patients with PK were compared with age and sex-matched AIS patients and 42 SK patients. The mean SRS-22 function score of the PK group was 4.72 ± 0.3 while it was 4.38 ± 0.6 (p=0.015) in SK patients and it was 4.34 ± 0.6 (p < 0.001) in AIS patients. The mean SRS-22 pain scores of PK patients was 4.18 ± 0.7. The mean pain score was 3.68 ± 0.8 (p=0.033) in the SK group and 3.6 ± 0.8 (p=0.010) in the AIS group. Adolescents with PK perceived less pain than those with AIS or SK. The scores for the other domains of SRS-22 revealed no differences., Conclusion: HRQoL of patients with PK is reduced, similar to that of patients with common structural spine deformities. Recognizing the effects of PK on the HRQoL in adolescents can help physicians to treat these patients.

Purpose: The aim of our study was to determine the relationship between Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) scores-a simple, validated depression screening tool-and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-22 questionnaire scores in patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS)., Methods: IS patients screened for depression with the PHQ-2 who completed the SRS-22 over a 2-year period were reviewed. If PHQ-2 scores were positive (> 3), the more comprehensive PHQ-9 was administered. Median SRS-22 scores between positive and negative PHQ screens were compared. Nonparametric correlation between PHQ and SRS-22 Mental Health (MH) domain was performed. The ability of the MH domain to discriminate between patients with positive versus negative screens and patients with moderate-severe depression risk versus no-mild risk was evaluated with ROC analysis., Results: 521 patients were included. Patients with + PHQ-2 screens had significantly lower total and individual domain SRS scores, especially within the MH domain (4.0 vs. 3.2). For those with moderate-severe depression risk, total and individual domain scores were also significantly lower (MH domain, 4.0 vs. 3.0, p < 0.05). A weak, but significant correlation was observed between the PHQ and MH domain scores (rho = 0.32, p < 0.001). A cut-off of ≥ 3.6 on the MH domain demonstrated sensitivity of 0.75 and specificity of 0.86 for identifying patients at no-mild risk for depression., Conclusion: Recognizing mental health conditions is critical to successful IS treatment as psychosocial conditions can negatively affect treatment outcomes. IS patients scoring < 3.6 on the SRS-22 MH domain should be considered for depression screening due to an increased risk of moderate-severe depression., (© 2023.
