Antimony (Sb) toxicity is a serious concern across the globe due to its hazardous impacts on plants and living organisms. The co-application of Chinese milk vetch (CMV) and biochar (BC) is a common agricultural practice, however, the effects of combined CMV and BC in mitigating Sb toxicity and bio-availability remain unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of CMV, rape straw biochar (RBC), and iron-modified biochar (FMB) and their combinations on rice productivity, physiological, and biochemical functioning of rice and Sb availability. Antimony toxicity caused a marked reduction in rice growth and productivity by decreasing chlorophyll, and anthocyanin synthesis, leaf water contents, osmolyte synthesis and antioxidant activities while, increasing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), electrolyte leakage (EL), and malondialdehyde (MDA) production and Sb accumulation. Co-application of CMV and FMB increased biomass (29.50%) and grain yield (51.07%) of rice by increasing chlorophyll, and anthocyanin synthesis, leaf water contents, osmolyte synthesis, antioxidant activities, and decreasing production of H2O2, EL, and MDA and Sb accumulation in roots (90.41%) and shoots (96.38%). Furthermore, the combined addition of CMV and FMB also reduced the soil available Sb by 75.57% which resulted in less accumulation of Sb in plant parts and improved growth and yield. Given these facts, these findings indicate that co-application of CMV and FMB is a promising approach to remediate Sb-polluted soils and improve sustainable and safer rice productivity. Salinity is a serious abiotic stress that limits crop production and food security. Micronutrient application has shown promising results in mitigating the toxic impacts of salinity. This study assessed the impacts of zinc seed priming (ZSP) on the germination, growth, physiological and biochemical functioning of sorghum cultivars. The study comprised sorghum cultivars (JS-2002 and JS-263), salinity stress (control (0 mM) and 120 mM)), and control and ZSP (4 mM). Salinity stress reduced germination and seedling growth by increasing electrolyte leakage (EL: 60.65%), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2: 109.50%), malondialdehyde (MDA; 115.30%), sodium (Na), and chloride (Cl) accumulation and decreasing chlorophyll synthesis, relative water contents (RWC), total soluble proteins (TSPs), and potassium (K) uptake and accumulation. Nonetheless, ZSP mitigated the deleterious impacts of salinity and led to faster germination and better seedling growth. Zinc seed priming improved the chlorophyll synthesis, leaf water contents, antioxidant activities (ascorbate peroxide: APX, catalase: CAT, peroxidase: POD, superoxide dismutase: SOD), TSPs, proline, K uptake and accumulation, and reduced EL, MDA, and H2O2 production, as well as the accumulation of toxic ions (Na and Cl), thereby promoting better germination and growth. Thus, these findings suggested that ZSP can mitigate the toxicity of salinity by favoring nutrient homeostasis, antioxidant activities, chlorophyll synthesis, osmolyte accumulation, and maintaining leaf water status. Background: Crop diversification is considered as an imperative approach for synchronizing the plant nutrient demands and soil nutrient availability. Taking two or more crops from the same field in one year is considered as multiple cropping. It improves the diversity and abundance of soil microbes, thereby improving the growth and yield of crops. Therefore, the present study was conducted to explore the effects of different multiple winter cropping on soil microbial communities in paddy fields. In this study, eight rice cropping patterns from two multiple cropping systems with three different winter crops, including Chinese milk vetch (CMV), rape, and wheat were selected. The effects of different multiple winter cropping on soil microbial abundance, community structure, and diversity in paddy fields were studied by 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing and real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: The results showed that different multiple winter cropping increased the operational taxonomic units (OTUs), species richness, and community richness index of the bacterial community in 0 ~ 20 cm soil layer. Moreover, soil physical and chemical properties of different multiple cropping patterns also affected the diversity and abundance of microbial bacterial communities. The multiple cropping increased soil potassium and nitrogen content, which significantly affected the diversity and abundance of bacterial communities, and it also increased the overall paddy yield. Moreover, different winter cropping changed the population distribution of microorganisms, and Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Nitrospira, and Chloroflexi were identified as the most dominant groups. Multiple winter cropping, especially rape-early rice-late rice (TR) andChinese milk vetch- early rice-late rice (TC) enhanced the abundance of Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria and decreased the relative abundance of Verrucomicrobia and Euryarchaeota. Conclusion: In conclusion, winter cropping of Chinese milk vetch and rape were beneficial to improve the soil fertility, bacteria diversity, abundance and rice yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Major polyamines include putrescine, spermidine, spermine and thermospermine, which play vital roles in growth and adaptation against environmental changes in plants. Thermospermine (T‐Spm) is synthetised by ACL5. The function of ACL5 in rice is still unknown. In this study, we used a reverse genetic strategy to investigate the biological function of OsACL5. We generated several knockout mutants by pYLCRISPR/Cas9 system and overexpressing (OE) lines of OsACL5. Interestingly, the OE plants exhibited environmentally‐dependent leaf rolling, smaller grains, lighter 1000‐grain weight and reduction in yield per plot. The area of metaxylem vessels of roots and leaves of OE plants were significantly smaller than those of WT, which possibly caused reduction in leaf water potential, resulting in leaf rolling with rise in the environmental temperature and light intensity and decrease in humidity. Additionally, the T‐Spm contents were markedly increased by over ninefold whereas the ethylene evolution was reduced in OE plants, suggesting that T‐Spm signalling pathway interacts with ethylene pathway to regulate multiple agronomic characters. Moreover, the osacl5 exhibited an increase in grain length, 1000‐grain weight, and yield per plot. OsACL5 may affect grain size via mediating the expression of OsDEP1, OsGS3 and OsGW2. Furthermore, haplotypes analysis indicated that OsACL5 plays a conserved function on regulating T‐Spm levels during the domestication of rice. Our data demonstrated that identification of OsACL5 provides a theoretical basis for understanding the physiological mechanism of T‐Spm which may play roles in triggering environmentally dependent leaf rolling; OsACL5 will be an important gene resource for molecular breeding for higher yield. Selective macroautophagy/autophagy in metazoans involves the conserved receptors NBR1 and SQSTM1/p62. Both autophagy receptors manage ubiquitinated cargo recognition, while SQSTM1 has an additional, distinct role of facilitating liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) during autophagy. Given that plants lack SQSTM1, it is postulated that plant NBR1 may combine activities of both metazoan NBR1 and SQSTM1. However, the precise mechanism by which plant NBR1 recognizes non-ubiquitinated substrates and its ability to undergo LLPS during selective autophagy remain elusive. Here, we implicate both the ZZ-type zinc finger motif and the four-tryptophan domain of Arabidopsis NBR1 (AtNBR1) in the recognition of non-ubiquitinated cargo proteins. Additionally, we reveal that AtNBR1 indeed undergoes LLPS prior to ATG8-mediated autophagosome formation, crucial for heat stress resistance in Arabidopsis. Heavy metal pollution has become a serious concern across the globe due to their persistent nature, higher toxicity, and recalcitrance. These toxic metals threaten the stability of the environment and the health of all living beings. Heavy metals also enter the human food chain by eating contaminated foods and cause toxic effects on human health. Thus, remediation of HMs polluted soils is mandatory and it needs to be addressed at higher priority. The use of microbes is considered as a promising approach to combat the adverse impacts of HMs. Microbes aided in the restoration of deteriorated environments to their natural condition, with long-term environmental effects. Microbial remediation prevents the leaching and mobilization of HMs and they also make the extraction of HMs simple. Therefore, in this context recent technological advancement allowed to use of bioremediation as an imperative approach to remediate polluted soils. Microbes use different mechanisms including bio-sorption, bioaccumulation, bioleaching, bio-transformation, bio-volatilization and bio-mineralization to mitigate toxic the effects of HMs. Thus, keeping in the view toxic HMs here in this review explores the role of bacteria, fungi and algae in bioremediation of polluted soils. This review also discusses the various approaches that can be used to improve the efficiency of microbes to remediate HMs polluted soils.
