Abstract Quantifying fair national shares of the remaining global carbon budget has proven challenging. Here, we propose an indicator—additional carbon accountability—that quantifies countries’ responsibility for mitigation and CO2 removal in addition to achieving their own targets. Considering carbon debts since 1990 and future claims based on countries’ emission pathways, the indicator uses an equal cumulative per capita emissions approach to allocate accountability for closing the mitigation gap among countries with a positive total excessive carbon claim. The carbon budget is exceeded by 576 Gigatonnes of fossil CO2 when limiting warming below 1.5 °C (50% probability). Additional carbon accountability is highest for the United States and China, and highest per capita for the United Arab Emirates and Russia. Assumptions on carbon debts strongly impact the results for most countries. The ability to pay for this accountability is challenging for Iran, Kazakhstan and several BRICS+ members, in contrast to the G7 members.

Maintaining a pair bond year after year (perennial monogamy) often enhances reproductive success, but what familiar pairs are doing differently to improve success is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that endocrine changes mediate improvements in parental attendance in known-age Cassin’s auklets Ptychoramphus aleuticus, for which we found limited evidence. Instead, we found sex-specific parental roles in familiar pairs. Males modulated their nest attendance depending on the attendance of their mate, but the direction depended on mate familiarity. We suggest his flexibility may be mediated by prolactin. In a historical dataset, females with a familiar mate laid larger eggs that hatched into more robust chicks, but larger eggs correlated with lower female body condition. In study birds, attendance by males and females in good condition predicted chick weight, but attendance by females in poor condition did not, suggesting female-specific energetic constraint. Our findings suggest that males and females contribute differently to their joint reproductive fortunes, and that improvements in their respective roles may result in the benefits of mate familiarity. Since improved reproductive success is presumed to be a main benefit of maintaining a long-term pair bond, these results suggest a new avenue of research in the evolution of monogamy.

Abstract Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have gained interest recently due to their biodegradability and versatility. In particular, the chemical compositions of medium‐chain‐length (mcl)‐PHAs are highly diverse, comprising different monomers containing 6–14 carbon atoms. This review summarizes different feedstocks and fermentation strategies to enhance mcl‐PHA production and briefly discusses the downstream processing. This review also provides comprehensive details on analytical tools for determining the composition and properties of mcl‐PHA. Moreover, this study provides novel information by statistically analyzing the data collected from several reports on mcl‐PHA to determine the optimal fermentation parameters (specific growth rate, PHA productivity, and PHA yield from various structurally related and unrelated substrates), mcl‐PHA composition, molecular weight (MW), and thermal and mechanical properties, in addition to other relevant statistical values. The analysis revealed that the median PHA productivity observed in the fed‐batch feeding strategy was 0.4 g L−1 h−1, which is eight times higher than that obtained from batch feeding (0.05 g L−1 h−1). Furthermore, 3‐hydroxyoctanoate and ‐decanoate were the primary monomers incorporated into mcl‐PHA. The investigation also determined the median glass transition temperature (−43°C) and melting temperature (47°C), which indicated that mcl‐PHA is a flexible amorphous polymer at room temperature with a median MW of 104 kDa. However, information on the monomer composition or heterogeneity and the associated physical and mechanical data of mcl‐PHAs is inadequate. Based on their mechanical values, the mcl‐PHAs can be classified as semi‐crystalline polymers (median crystallinity 23%) with rubber‐like properties and a median elongation at break of 385%. However, due to the limited mechanical data available for mcl‐PHAs with known monomer composition, identifying suitable processing tools and applications to develop mcl‐PHAs further is challenging.

Expression of the double homeobox 4 (DUX4) transcription factor is highly regulated in early embryogenesis and is subsequently epigenetically silenced. Ectopic expression of DUX4 due to hypomethylation of the D4Z4 repeat array on permissive chromosome 4q35 alleles is associated with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). In peripheral blood samples from 188 healthy individuals, D4Z4 methylation was highly variable, ranging from 19% to 76%, and was not affected by age. In 48 FSHD2 patients, D4Z4 methylation varied from 3% to 30%. Given that DUX4 is one of the earliest transcribed genes after fertilization, the D4Z4 array is expected to be unmethylated in mature germ cells. Deep bisulfite sequencing of 188 mainly normozoospermic sperm samples revealed an average methylation of 2.5% (range 0.3–22%). Overall, the vast majority (78%) of individual sperm cells displayed no methylation at all. In contrast, only 19 (17.5%) of 109 individual germinal vesicle (GV) oocytes displayed D4Z4 methylation PEG3 and GTL2) imprints.
