To shed light on the potential impacts of climate change, we have developed a large ensemble of species distribution models (SDMs) for species found in the coastal marine environments and examined their spatiotemporal turnover and stability.The Azorean archipelago.Coastal marine species (mammals, fish, turtles, seabirds, kelp forest and corals).SDMs were fitted a large ensemble comprising 10 machine learning algorithms and a fivefold cross‐validation resampling procedure, thus yielding a maximum number of 50 models fitted per species. These models were then utilised for projecting species distribution under different future scenarios. The projected distributions of the species were employed to assess changes in the stability of their ranges throughout the entire modelled period (2030–2100) and in their community compositions by examining changes in alpha diversity and beta diversity over 10‐year periods.We show that under our model assumptions over 12% of the modelled units could lose suitable climate by the end of the century, with this number increasing up to 25% under a high carbon emissions scenario. Climate change refugia, which are areas of long‐term species range stability, are expected to be mainly located in the coastal areas in the northernmost part of the archipelago. A substantial loss of suitable climate is anticipated for mammals and birds, which is likely to trigger a major loss of species on the islands of Santa Maria, São Miguel, Pico and Faial. For fish, the loss of suitable climates is less pronounced. However, climate change is expected to cause a major reshuffling of the pelagic fish assemblage, with important consequences for local fisheries on each island.Our models provide insights into how climate change may alter the distribution of Azorean marine coastal species, offering important guidance for conservation and management efforts in these important North Atlantic ecosystems. Industrialized housing offers potential benefits in efficiency and sustainability compared to traditional construction methods, but public perception often remains negative due to a lack of familiarity. This study explores how prior information and knowledge influence perceptions of industrialized versus traditional housing. An online survey with 267 participants evaluated stimuli composed of an image of a house and a label (industrialized or non-industrialized). Results indicated no significant differences in perception based on visual appearance alone; however, the "industrialized" label was rated less favorably. This effect was more pronounced among those without expertise in industrialized construction. The study also revealed that providing objective prior information improved perceptions of personal and emotional attributes (e.g., cozy, family-friendliness, comfortable, well-being), but did not affect views on construction-specific attributes (e.g., quick-to-build, automated, or modular). These findings underscore the need for neutral and informative communication to counteract negative biases and enhance acceptance of industrialized housing. For the construction industry and policymakers, it is crucial to promote unbiased information and education to overcome resistance due to misconceptions and foster a more positive perception of the product's features. Central America and the Caribbean are regularly battered by megadroughts, heavy rainfall, heat waves, and tropical cyclones. Although 21st‐century climate change is expected to increase the frequency, intensity, and duration of these extreme weather events (EWEs), their incidence in regional protected areas (PAs) remains poorly explored. We examined historical and projected EWEs across the region based on 32 metrics that describe distinct dimensions (i.e., intensity, duration, and frequency) of heat waves, cyclones, droughts, and rainfall and compared trends in PAs with trends in unprotected lands. From the early 21st century onward, exposure to EWEs increased across the region, and PAs were predicted to be more exposed to climate extremes than unprotected areas (as shown by autoregressive model coefficients at p < 0.05 significance level). This was particularly true for heat waves, which were projected to have a significantly higher average (tested by Wilcoxon tests at p < 0.01) intensity and duration, and tropical cyclones, which affected PAs more severely in carbon‐intensive scenarios. PAs were also predicted to be significantly less exposed to droughts and heavy rainfall than unprotected areas (tested by Wilcoxon tests at p < 0.01). However, droughts that could threaten connectivity between PAs are increasingly common in this region. We estimated that approximately 65% of the study area will experience at least one drought episode that is more intense and longer lasting than previous droughts. Collectively, our results highlight that new conservation strategies adapted to threats associated with EWEs need to be tailored and implemented promptly. The fruit of the cashew, a tree belonging to the family Anacardiaceae, is composed of approximately 10% nut (cashew) and 90% stalk or pseudofruit, usually discarded in situ and fermented in the soil. This review identifies cashew pseudofruit's physicochemical characteristics and bioactive compounds and their possible relationship to health benefits. Different processing techniques have been used to preserve the pseudofruit, and the effect of these techniques on its nutrients is also reviewed in this work. Cashew is a highly perishable product with moisture content above 80% w/w and 10% w/w sugars. It also has a high content of polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins and high antioxidant properties that are best preserved by nonthermal processing techniques. The pseudofruit presents the high inhibitory activity of α-amylase and lipase enzymes, has anti-inflammatory and body weight reduction properties and healing activity, and controls glucose levels, insulinemia, and insulin resistance. For all these reasons, cashews have been promoted as a propitious food/ingredient for preventive and therapeutic management of different pathologies such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, hypertension, fatty liver, and acne. Background: Complete avoidance of milk is the usual management for IgE‐mediated cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). A baked milk ladder is a method of dietary advancement therapy in IgE‐mediated CMPA in Ireland, while in Spain, avoidance of milk awaiting natural tolerance acquisition through an oral food challenge (OFC) is employed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of dietary advancement therapy using a milk ladder compared with complete avoidance of milk for managing IgE‐mediated CMPA. Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of 371 pediatric patients from the population who have been treated for IgE‐mediated CMPA between 2011 and 2020, with the milk ladder (Ireland) or complete avoidance followed by an OFC (Spain). The main outcome was the introduction of cow's milk. Results: Milk ladder patients were 3.67 times more likely to succeed in comparison with milk avoidance (p <.001). Anaphylaxis during the treatment period occurred in 34 patients in the milk avoidance groups, while three patients in the milk ladder group experienced anaphylaxis due to accidental exposure to milk (p <.001). Failure to complete treatment was associated with a higher skin prick test in the milk avoidance group and a raised specific IgE in the milk ladder group. Conclusion: This is the first study that compares outcomes of dietary advancement therapy to complete avoidance for CMPA management, demonstrating that cow's milk can be successfully and safely reintroduced using dietary advancement therapy using a milk ladder. Monolayers of Ti and TiN coatings, as well as a Ti/TiN bilayer coating, were deposited on AISI M2 steel substrates using the PVD cathodic arc technique. The coatings had a thickness close to 5 μm and an average roughness between 98.6 and 110.1 μm due to the presence of microdroplets on the surface. The crystalline structure of the materials was analyzed using Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction (GIXRD) with an increase in temperature to study the dynamics of oxide formation. A phase composition study was conducted using the Rietveld refinement method. At the temperatures where critical growth of titanium oxides, both anatase and rutile, was observed, pin-on-disk tests were performed to study the tribological properties of the materials at high temperatures. It was determined that the oxidation temperature of Ti is around 450 °C, promoting the formation of a combination of anatase and rutile. However, the formation of rutile inhibits the formation of anatase, which is stable above 600 °C. In contrast, TiN showed an oxidation temperature of 550 °C, with an exclusive growth of the rutile phase. The Ti/TiN bilayer exhibited mixed behavior, with the initial growth of anatase promoted by Ti, followed by the formation of rutile. Oxidation and tribo-oxidation dominated the wear behavior of the surfaces, showing a transition from mechanisms related to abrasion at low and medium temperatures to a combination of abrasion and adhesion mechanisms at high temperatures (800 °C). Packaging design is pivotal in motivating consumer decisions, as a key communication tool from creation to purchase. Currently, the interpretation and evaluation of packaging's impact are shifting toward non-traditional methods. This pilot study evaluated the packaging perception of York Ham and Turkey Breast products. The event-related potential (ERP) technique, the methodology priming words (positive and negative), and target images (original and modified packaging) were applied. A total of 23 participants were sampled using a 32-channels scalp elastic electrode cap and viewed 200 trials of word–image matching. Participants responded whether the images and adjectives matched or not, using the two groups of images. The results demonstrate an N400 effect in the parietal area. This region was observed to show evidence of cognitive processing related to congruency or incongruency, by contrasting the priming and target of this study. The evaluation positioned the York Ham packaging as the best rated. The findings show a relevant contribution to ERPs and research related to the food packaging perception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fucosyltransferases (Fut) regulate the fucosylation process associated with tumorogenesis in different cancer types. Ascitic fluid (AF) from patients diagnosed with advanced stage of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is considered as a dynamic tumor microenvironment associated with poor prognosis. Previous studies from our laboratory showed increased fucosylation in SKOV‐3 and OVCAR‐3, cancer‐derived cell lines, when these cells were incubated with AFs derived from patients diagnosed with EOC. In the present work we studied three fucosyltransferases (Fut 2, Fut 4, and Fut 8) in SKOV‐3, OVCAR‐3 and CAOV‐3 cell lines in combination with five different AFs from patients diagnosed with this disease, confirming that all tested AFs increased fucosylation. Then, we demonstrate that mRNAs of these three enzymes were overexpressed in the three cell lines under treatment with AFs. SKOV‐3 showed the higher overexpression of Fut 2, Fut 4, and Fut 8 in comparison with the control condition. We further confirmed, in the SKOV‐3 cell line, by endpoint PCR, WB, and confocal microscopy, that the three enzymes were overexpressed, being Fut 4 the most overexpressed enzyme compared to Fut 2 and Fut 8. These enzymes were concentrated in vesicular structures with a homogeneous distribution pattern throughout the cytoplasm. Moreover, we found that among the three enzymes, only Fut 4 was located inside the nuclei. The nuclear location of Fut 4 was confirmed for the three cell lines. These results allow to propose Fut 2, Fut 4, and Fut 8 as potential targets for EOC treatment or as diagnostic tools for this disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Telehealth is an emerging approach that uses technology to provide healthcare remotely. Recent publications have outlined the importance of supporting the transition to self‐management of adolescents with allergic conditions. However, no synthesis of the evidence base on the use and impact of telehealth interventions for this purpose has been conducted to date. This review achieves these aims, in addition to exploring the language use surrounding these interventions, and their implementation. Four databases were searched systematically. References were independently screened by two reviewers. Methodological quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. A narrative synthesis was undertaken. Eighteen articles were included, reporting on 15 telehealth interventions. A total of 86% targeted adolescents with asthma. Mobile applications were the most common telehealth modality used, followed by video‐conferencing, web‐based, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. Five intervention content categories were identified; educational, monitoring, behavioural, psychosocial and healthcare navigational. Peer and/or healthcare professional interaction, gamification and tailoring may increase engagement. The studies showed positive effects of the interventions or no difference from active controls, in self‐management outcomes such as knowledge, health outcomes such as quality‐of‐life, and economic outcomes such as healthcare utilization. Objectives. The study aimed to analyze external load indicators with the incidence of non-contact hamstring injuries. Material and methods. A non-experimental correlative, retrospective cohort study was carried out. The data were collected from 31 professional male soccer players over the course of one season. The following load indicators were examined: duration (D), total distance travelled (TDT), distance travelled at high intensity (DTHI) > 20 km/h, number of efforts between 20-25 km/h (NE 20-25 km/h), distance travelled at more than 25 km/h (DR+25 km/h), number of sprints greater than 25 km/h (NE > 25 km/h), number of accelerations greater than 1 m/s2 (Acc), and number of minor decelerations at -1 m/s2 (Dcc). Only non-contact hamstring injuries were included in the analysis. For the multivariate analysis, we applied a logistic regression model, where a value of p < 0.05 was established both for the statistical significance of the model (X2) and for each of the regressor variables (X2), the confidence interval level was 95%. Results. Two injuries were recorded and diagnosed: injury grade 2 and muscle fatigue. The load indicators analyzed did not show a significant correlation with hamstring injury. Therefore, no association was found between external load and hamstring injury in professional soccer players. Conclusions. The logistic regression model (p > 0.05) did not present statistical significance. Consequently, none of the external load variables monitored explain the rate of non-contact hamstring injuries in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, immersive virtual environments (IVE) are widely used in fields such as architecture and environmental psychology. These simulated environments allow for a detailed evaluation of how different designs impact users' perception and interaction with the built environment, under controlled conditions and without incurring high costs. The validity of these IVEs is related to their capacity to evoke a participant's response similar to that of the space they are simulating. This paper presents a validation study of a virtual classroom with two phases: the analysis of the sense of presence in the generated IVE and the comparison of the psychological and neurophysiological response of subjects in the two environments (physical vs. IVE). The psychological response captures cognitive processes via the performance of attention and memory tasks. The physiological response records the subject's activity monitored via electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, and electrodermal activity. The results showed that the psychological and physiological responses in both environments (physical vs. IVE) were similar. This may be of interest to architecture researchers and professionals as they validate IVE systems as tools to study the effects of the built environment on users' cognitive responses. Visual environmental simulations are fundamental in understanding the relationship between the built environment and psychological perception. The remarkable evolution of virtual immersion displays over recent years has provided a series of advantages to the architectural discipline, one of which is that non-specialists now have the potential to better understand architectural spaces. This work aimed to analyse the adequacy of the main displays and formats currently used in environmental simulations. As the objective was twofold, two experimental studies were carried out (with a sample of 100 participants). The studies evaluated users' responses to different environmental representations of two environments, using differential semantic scales to measure key underlying factors (utility, credibility, realism, accuracy, abstraction). The first study examined simulation displays: a PC, an HTC Vive Pro 2 head-mounted display, a PowerWall Screen and a CAVE. In the second, formats were analysed: normal image, 360° image, video and 360° video. The results of this work revealed that users perceived the space differently depending on the representation displays and formats used. Such comparisons of these new means of representing architectural spaces can be helpful to researchers, architects and urban planning professionals and might provoke debate in, and be extrapolated into, the design field. Although scientific research has identified the causes of undesirable ecological changes in fresh waters, translating the results of research into practical conservation and management, and raising awareness of the need for action, is often inadequate.This Viewpoint considers the present coverage of conservation‐related freshwater research, the application of science to conservation, the extent of collaboration between international organizations, and the level of awareness of freshwater ecosystems and the need for their conservation.Far greater attention has been given to conservation in marine than freshwater areas. This is illustrated by the respective number of publications in the scientific literature, an imbalance in the UN Sustainable Development goals, and, until recently, the lack of an explicit reference to freshwater ecosystems in the UN Global Biodiversity Framework.Four case studies are presented as examples of how freshwater conservation can be made more effective: involving local communities in applying nature‐based solutions; bringing scientists and stakeholders together to discuss how to improve freshwater management; collaborating at a global scale in freshwater protection and restoration; and demonstrating how scientists and government can work together to reconcile the competing needs of nature and human society.Producing and implementing effective conservation and management plans needs a recognition of the extensive diversity of freshwater habitats and species, as well as a systematic evaluation of how scientific information can be translated into action at local, regional and global scales.Data on freshwater ecosystems need to be accessible, comprehensible, unambiguous and available to all those working on practical conservation projects. Many international organizations are already active in this field, but greater collaboration would make their work more effective.Raising awareness needs education and training, carefully targeted at a wide range of audiences, and communicated using the full range of media now available. This document is a reply to a correspondence regarding a study on the management of cow's milk protein allergy in pediatric cohorts. The authors express gratitude for the correspondence and discuss the use of milk ladders in the Irish population as a treatment pathway. They emphasize the importance of involving parents in the home-based reintroduction of milk-containing foods and note that either preparing the food at home or using processed food with milk protein is acceptable. The authors acknowledge the limitations of their retrospective study and agree that a prospective study with randomization is needed to address questions about the effectiveness of milk ladder therapy. They also mention the need for long-term follow-up and respond to suggestions for subgroup analysis and age-specific initiation of milk oral immunotherapy. A study published in the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy examined the safety and effectiveness of a milk ladder for managing children with IgE-mediated milk allergy. The study found that 87% of infants with milk allergy successfully introduced milk using a home milk ladder. While allergic reactions were common, cases of anaphylaxis were triggered by accidental milk exposures, not the milk ladder itself. The study provides evidence for the efficacy and safety of the milk ladder in managing milk allergy in young children.
