Abstract Background Oral frailty is reported to increase the risk of new onset of mild cognitive impairment. Whereas, the association of oral frailty with cognition among older adults in both physical frail and non-physical frail status has not been sufficiently explored, and whether there are sex differences in the association is unclear. This study investigated the association of oral frailty and physical frailty with global cognitive function and executive function among older adults, as well as the sex differences in such association. Methods This cross-sectional study included 307 participants aged ≥ 60 years old from communities between June 2023 and August 2023, in Nanjing, China. Global cognitive function and executive function were assessed by using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Trail Making Tests A (TMT-A), respectively. Oral frailty was identified by the combination of natural tooth, Oral Frailty Index-8 (OFI-8), and oral diadochokinesis. Physical frailty was measured by using Fried phenotype model which contained 5 criteria: unintentional weight loss, weakness, exhaustion, slowness, and low physical activity. Multiple linear regression analyses for overall participants and stratified by sex and presence or absence of physical frailty were performed, respectively, to examine the association between oral frailty and cognitive functions. Results The median age of participants was 70 years old. The study included 158 (51.5%) females, 53 (17.3%) individuals with physical frailty, and 65 (21.2%) participants with oral frailty. After adjustment, the association between oral frailty and global cognitive function was observed in the physical frailty group (B = -2.67, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: -5.27 to -0.07, p = 0.045) and the females with physical frailty (B = -4, 95% CI: -7.41 to -0.58, p = 0.024). Oral frailty was associated with executive function in overall participants (B = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.22, p = 0.037), physical frailty group (B = 23.68, 95% CI: 1.37 to 45.99, p = 0.038). In the adjusted models, oral frailty was significantly associated with executive function in all females (B = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.36, p = 0.009), in females without physical frailty (B = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.36, p = 0.027), and in females with physical frailty (B = 48.69, 95% CI: 7.17 to 90.21, p = 0.024). Conclusions Physical frailty intensifies the positive association of oral frailty with poor global cognitive function and executive function among older adults, particularly among females. It is ponderable to consider sex differences and facilitate the management of physical frailty when it comes to promoting cognitive health based on the perspective of oral health among older adults.

Abstract Introduction Corneal biomechanics has been implicated in a variety of ocular diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the glaucoma and corneal biomechanical properties, and exploring the value of corneal biomechanics in the diagnosis and follow-up of glaucoma diseases. Methods We searched studies in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and clinicaltrials.gov., as of October 8, 2022. Only English studies were included, without publication time limit. We also searched the reference lists of published reviews. This meta-analysis was conducted with random-effects models, we used mean difference(MD) to evaluate the outcome, and the heterogeneity was assessed with the I2 statistic. Subgroup analyses were performed under the appearance of high heterogeneity. We used 11 items to describe the characteristics of included studies, publication bias was performed through the Egger’s test. The quality assessment were evaluated by Newcastle–Ottawa Scale(NOS) items. Results A total of 27 eligible studies were identified for data synthesis and assessment. The result of meta-analysis showed that in the comparison of included indicators, the corneal biomechanics values of glaucoma patients were statistically lower than those of normal subjects in a similar age range. Abstract Background Sweet yellow clover (Melilotus officinalis) is a diploid plant (2n = 16) that is native to Europe. It is an excellent legume forage. It can both fix nitrogen and serve as a medicine. A genome assembly of Melilotus officinalis that was collected from Best corporation in Beijing is available based on Nanopore sequencing. The genome of Melilotus officinalis was sequenced, assembled, and annotated. Results The latest PacBio third generation HiFi assembly and sequencing strategies were used to produce a Melilotus officinalis genome assembly size of 1,066 Mbp, contig N50 = 5 Mbp, scaffold N50 = 130 Mbp, and complete benchmarking universal single-copy orthologs (BUSCOs) = 96.4%. This annotation produced 47,873 high-confidence gene models, which will substantially aid in our research on molecular breeding. A collinear analysis showed that Melilotus officinalis and Medicago truncatula shared conserved synteny. The expansion and contraction of gene families showed that Melilotus officinalis expanded by 565 gene families and shrank by 56 gene families. The contacted gene families were associated with response to stimulus, nucleotide binding, and small molecule binding. Thus, it is related to a family of genes associated with peptidase activity, which could lead to better stress tolerance in plants. Conclusions In this study, the latest PacBio technology was used to assemble and sequence the genome of the Melilotus officinalis and annotate its protein-coding genes. These results will expand the genomic resources available for Melilotus officinalis and should assist in subsequent research on sweet yellow clover plants.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly recognized as a global public health concern characterized by excessive lipid accumulation in the liver. Ferulic acid (FA), a common foodborne phenolic acid, has been shown to reduce lipid accumulation by activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and suppressing the expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1). In this study, we synthesized a new class of (E)-3-(3-methoxy-4-substituted phenyl)-acrylic acid derivatives as AMPK activators. Among these derivatives, compound S17 demonstrated a more potent inhibitory effect on lipid accumulation compared to its counterparts. Specifically, S17 notably diminished intracellular triglyceride (TG) levels and the activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which are indicators of liver function. In addition, S17 curtailed intracellular lipid accumulation by activating the AMPK signaling pathway and down-regulating the protein expression of SREBP-1 in free fatty acid (FFA)-induced HepG2 cells. Therefore, findings from this study strongly suggest that compound S17 may serve as a promising therapeutic candidate for the treatment of NAFLD.

Introduction: Eplerenone is approved for the treatment of hypertension as well as symptomatic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) following an acute myocardial infarction. However, the adverse events (AEs) have not been systematically analyzed. The aim of this study was to identify adverse drug reactions (ADRs) related to eplerenone using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. By identifying previously unreported AEs, the study could potentially contribute to updating the drug’s label.Methods: In order to find significant AEs, four algorithms, including Reporting Odds Ratio (ROR), Proportional Reporting Ratio (PRR), Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN) and Empirical Bayesian Geometric Mean (EBGM), were used to analyze the signal strength of the ADRs connected to eplerenone that were gathered from the FAERS database over the previous 20 years.Results: From 2004Q1 to 2023Q4, a total of 20, 629, 811 reported cases were gathered from the FAERS database for this study. After processing the data and filtering, 1,874 case reports were analyzed. Of these cases, 1,070 AEs were identified, 128 of which were eplerenone-related ADRs. We investigated the occurrence of ADRs induced by eplerenone in 27 organ systems. Our study showed that the AEs listed in the medication’s package insert correspond with those listed in the literature, including hyperkalemia and increased creatinine. Additionally, the prescription label for eplerenone does not include all system organ class (SOC) terms, like Vascular disorders, hepatobiliary Disorders, etc.Discussion: The study used multiple algorithms to quantify the signal strength and then identified any previously unrecognized ADRs, further studies are needed to confirm the association of ADRs with eplerenone. The findings of this study may provide important insights into the safety profile of eplerenone, ensure that healthcare providers have up-to-date information about their potential risks and help guide them in the correct use of the drug.

Grain chalkiness directly affects the commercial value of rice. Genes related to chalkiness reported thus far have been discovered in mutants, but it has not been identified whether these genes can be used to improve rice quality by breeding. Therefore, discovering more quantitative trait loci (QTLs) or genes related to chalkiness in the rice germplasm is necessary. This study entails a genome-wide association study on the degree of endosperm chalkiness (DEC) and percentage of grains with chalkiness (PGWC) by combining 1.2 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with the phenotypic data of 173 rice accessions. Thirteen QTLs for DEC and nine for PGWC were identified, of which four were detected simultaneously for both DEC and PGWC; further, qDEC11/qPGWC11 was identified as the major QTL. By combining linkage disequilibrium analysis and SNP information, LOC_Os11g10170 was identified as the candidate gene for DEC. There were significant differences among the haplotypes of LOC_Os11g10170, and the Hap 1 of LOC_Os11g10170 was observed to reduce the DEC by 6.19%. The qRT-PCR results showed that the gene expression levels in accessions with high DEC values were significantly higher than those in accessions with low DEC values during days 21–42 after flowering, with a maximum at 28 days. These results provide molecular markers and germplasm resources for genetic improvement of the chalkiness-related traits in rice.

Compact and high current inductors determine the power density and efficiency of voltage regulators (VRs) for computing ICs. Conventional moulding structures using powder cores and gapped ferrite cores are reaching the limits of size miniaturization. In this paper, a sandwich-structured inductor using 2D magnetic nanocrystalline flake ribbon (NFR) is developed to achieve high current density and low height. The analytical models of inductance and conduction losses are developed and validated by finite element methods and experiments. A 5 to 1 V, 50 A, VR is built to compare the performance of the fabricated NFR sandwich inductor to the latest commercial counterpart. Thermal performance is investigated, stability tests under solder iron heat and reflow temperature are performed. The fabricated sandwich inductor is featured as simple structure, low profile, low DC resistance (DCR), high saturation current, soldering heat stable, but in the modest compromise of the AC conduction and core losses.

Members of DOMAIN OF UNKNOWN FUNCTION 679 membrane proteins (DMPs) have the DUF679 domain, which plays an important role in the process of plant fertilization. In this study, bioinformatics methods were used to identify and analyze the DMP gene family in pepper. The location of the expression of the DMP gene family was explored according to the transient expression of Nicotiana benthamiana, and its expression patterns in different tissues and abiotic stress treatments were analyzed by qRT-PCR. A total of 17 CaDMP genes were identified from the three capsicum varieties, and sub-cellular localization prediction showed that CaDMPs were located on the cell membrane. Phylogenetic analysis showed that CaDMP5 in subgroup Ⅳ was highly homologous with haploid induction genes in Arabidopsis and maize, and its expression level in reproductive organs was significantly higher than that in other tissues, suggesting that CaDMP5 could be a candidate gene for haploid induction in pepper. The expression of CaDMPs increased to varying degrees after different stress treatments, indicating that the DMP gene plays an important role in plant growth and development. The CaDMP gene family was systematically analyzed in this study, which provided preliminary insights for the further research of Capsicum haploid breeding.

Abstract The tumor‐associated glycoprotein Mucin 1 (MUC1) is aberrantly glycosylated on cancer cells and is considered a promising target for antitumor vaccines. The weak immunogenicity and low sequence homology of mouse mucins and human MUC1 are the main obstacles for the development of vaccines. Herein, a self‐adjuvanted strategy combining toll‐like receptor 2 lipopeptide ligands and T‐cell epitopes and the multivalent effect were used to amplify the immune response and evade the unpredictable immunogenicity, generating two self‐adjuvanted three‐component MUC1 vaccines (mono‐ and trivalent MUC1 vaccines). To simulate the aberrantly glycosylated MUC1 glycoprotein, the MUC1 tandem repeat peptide was bounded with Tn antigens at T9, S15, and T16, and served as B‐cell epitopes. Results showed that both vaccines elicited a robust antibody response in wild‐type mice compared with a weaker response in MUC1 transgenic mice. The trivalent vaccine did not elevate the antibody response level compared with the monovalent vaccine; however, a more delayed tumor growth and prolonged survival time was realized in wild‐type and transgenic mouse models treated with the trivalent vaccine. These results indicate that the self‐adjuvanted three‐component MUC1 vaccines, especially the trivalent vaccine, can trigger robust antitumor effects regardless of sequence homology, and, therefore, show promise for clinical translation.

Milling quality directly affects production efficiency in rice, which is closely related to the brown rice recovery (BRR), the milled rice recovery (MRR) and the head milled rice recovery (HMRR). The present study investigated these three traits in 173 germplasms in two environments, finding abundant phenotypic variation. Three QTLs for BRR, two for MRR, and three for HMRR were identified in a genome-wide association study, five of these were identified in previously reported QTLs and three were newly identified. By combining the linkage disequilibrium (LD) analyses, the candidate gene LOC_Os05g08350 was identified. It had two haplotypes with significant differences and Hap 2 increased the BRR by 4.40%. The results of the qRT-PCR showed that the expression of LOC_Os05g08350 in small-BRR accessions was significantly higher than that in large-BRR accessions at Stages 4–5 of young panicle development, reaching the maximum value at Stage 5. The increase in thickness of the spikelet hulls of the accession carrying LOC_Os05g08350TT occurred due to an increase in the cell width and the cell numbers in cross-sections of spikelet hulls. These results help to further clarify the molecular genetic mechanism of milling-quality-related traits and provide genetic germplasm materials for high-quality breeding in rice.

Constructed from a dataset capturing the seasonal and annual water body distribution of the lower Qarqan River in the Taitma Lake area from 2017 to 2022, and combined with the meteorological and hydraulic engineering data, the spatial and temporal change patterns of the Taitma Lake watershed area were determined. Analyses were conducted using Planetscope (PS) satellite images and a deep learning model. The results revealed the following: ① Deep learning-based water body extraction provides significantly greater accuracy than the conventional water body index approach. With an impressive accuracy of up to 96.0%, UPerNet was found to provide the most effective extraction results among the three convolutional neural networks (U-Net, DeeplabV3+, and UPerNet) used for semantic segmentation; ② Between 2017 and 2022, Taitma Lake’s water area experienced a rapid decrease, with the distribution of water predominantly shifting towards the east–west direction more than the north–south. The shifts between 2017 and 2020 and between 2020 and 2022 were clearly discernible, with the latter stage (2020–2022) being more significant than the former (2017–2020); ③ According to observations, Taitma Lake’s changing water area has been primarily influenced by human activity over the last six years. Based on the research findings of this paper, it was observed that this study provides a valuable scientific basis for water resource allocation aiming to balance the development of water resources in the middle and upper reaches of the Tarim and Qarqan Rivers, as well as for the ecological protection of the downstream Taitma Lake.

The eating and cooking quality (ECQ) directly affects the taste of rice, being closely related to factors such as gelatinization temperature (GT), gel consistency (GC) and amylose content (AC). Mining the quantitative trait loci (QTLs), and gene loci controlling ECQ-related traits is vital. A genome-wide association study on ECQ-related traits was conducted, combining 1.2 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with the phenotypic data of 173 rice accessions. Two QTLs for GT, one for GC and five for AC were identified, of which two were found in previously reported genes, and six were newly found. There were 28 positional candidate genes in the region of qAC11. Based on a linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis, three candidate genes were screened within the LD region associated with AC. There were significant differences between the haplotypes of LOC_Os11g10170, but no significant differences were found for the other two genes. The qRT-PCR results showed that the gene expression levels in the accessions with high ACs were significantly larger than those in the accessions with low ACs at 35d and 42d after flowering. Hap 2 and Hap 3 of LOC_Os11g10170 reduced the AC by 13.09% and 10.77%, respectively. These results provide a theoretical and material basis for improving the ECQ of rice.

Hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT-1) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease with no effective cure at presen t. In recent years, gene-editing techniques such as base editor (BE) have been explored for treating HT-1. However, the delivery of nucleic acids faces challenges due to existing physiological barriers. In the present study, we constructed an asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR)-targeted polymer-lipid nanoparticle to enhance the delivery efficiency of therapeutic nucleic acids for HT-1. To deliver BE plasmids, a biodegradable cationic polymer, acrylate-amino alcohol copolymer was synthesized and demonstrated superior transfection efficiency compared to the commercially available transfection reagent, Hieff TransTM. Subsequently, DOPE-PEG-GalNAc was combined with copolymer nanoparticles to enhance the hepatocyte delivery of the nanoparticles. Upon loading the recombinant BE plasmid, Fah-pCMV-ABE6.3-EGFP, the polymer-lipid nanoparticles exhibited remarkable hepatocyte selectivity, with a transfection efficiency over 70-fold higher than that of the free plasmid. The study suggested that polymer-lipid nanoparticles, in combination with liver-targeted ligands, could effectively enhance the liver-targeted delivery of therapeutic BE plasmids, providing a promising vector for gene therapy of HT-1. This study was aimed at broadening the application range of chitosan hydrogels and constructing an edible anthocyanins (ACNs) delivery system. The acid resistant carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) gel microspheres (ACNs/CMCS-SA) loaded with ACNs were prepared by inversion-phase emulsion method. During the process, corn oil was used as continuous phase and salicylaldehyde (SA) was used as crosslinking agent. The structure and morphology of ACNs/CMCS-SA were characterized. And the stability, swelling ability and sustained release properties were studied. The results showed that ACNs/CMCS-SA had a micron particle size with smooth and round surface. The gel microspheres showed good acid resistance and pH responsiveness during swelling and sustained release experiments. The sustained release behavior of ACNs conformed to Weibull model. In pH7 and pH9 media, the release process of ACNs was controlled by a combination mechanism of diffusion and skeleton dissolution. In pH3 and 5 media, it was controlled by a combination of Fick diffusion and Case Ⅱ transport (order 0 grade-swelling dependent release). The preparation method of ACNs/CMCS-SA was simple and green, and the sample exhibited good gastric acid protection and intestinal release performance for ACNs. Therefore, this study lays a theoretical and experimental foundation for the development of environmentally friendly drug encapsulation materials and the application of ACNs.

Abstract With the changing times, obesity has become a characteristic epidemic in the context of the current era. Insulin resistance (IR) is most commonly caused by obesity, and IR is a common basis of the pathogenesis of many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and type 2 diabetes, which seriously threaten human life, as well as health. A major pathogenetic mechanism of obesity-associated IR has been found to be chronic low-grade inflammation in adipose tissue. Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) are novel lipid mediators that both function as “stop signals” for inflammatory reaction and promote inflammation to subside. In this article, we summarize the pathogenesis of obesity-associated IR and its treatments and outline the classification and biosynthesis of SPMs and their mechanisms and roles in the treatment of obesity-associated IR in order to explore the potential of SPMs for treating metabolic diseases linked with obesity-associated IR.

Abstract Developing stable, high-performance chloride-ion storage electrodes is essential for energy storage and water purification application. Herein, a P, S co-doped porous hollow nanotube array, with a free ion diffusion pathway and highly active adsorption sites, on carbon felt electrodes (CoNiPS@CF) is reported. Due to the porous hollow nanotube structure and synergistic effect of P, S co-doped, the CoNiPS@CF based capacitive deionization (CDI) system exhibits high desalination capacity (76.1 mgCl – g–1), fast desalination rate (6.33 mgCl – g–1 min–1) and good cycling stability (capacity retention rate of > 90%), which compares favorably to the state-of-the-art electrodes. The porous hollow nanotube structure enables fast ion diffusion kinetics due to the swift ion transport inside the electrode and the presence of a large number of reactive sites. The introduction of S element also reduces the passivation layer on the surface of CoNiP and lowers the adsorption energy for Cl– capture, thereby improving the electrode conductivity and surface electrochemical activity, and further accelerating the adsorption kinetics. Our results offer a powerful strategy to improve the reactivity and stability of transition metal phosphides for chloride capture, and to improve the efficiency of electrochemical dechlorination technologies.

Abstract Background Despite the implementation of various postoperative management strategies, the prevalence of postoperative fatigue syndrome (POFS) remains considerable among individuals undergoing laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. While the N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor antagonist esketamine has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing sleep quality and alleviating postoperative pain, its impact on POFS remains uncertain. Consequently, the objective of this study is to ascertain whether perioperative administration of esketamine can effectively mitigate the occurrence of POFS in patients undergoing laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. Methods A total of 133 patients diagnosed with gastric cancer were randomly assigned to two groups, namely the control group (Group C) (n = 66) and the esketamine group (Group E) (n = 67), using a double-blind method. The Group C received standardized anesthesia, while the Group E received esketamine in addition to the standardized anesthesia. The primary outcome measure assessed was the Christensen fatigue score at 3 days after the surgical procedure, while the secondary outcomes included the disparities in postoperative fatigue, postoperative pain, sleep quality, and adverse reactions between the two groups. Results In the group receiving esketamine, the fatigue scores of Christensen on the third day after surgery were significantly lower compared to the Group C (estimated difference, -0.70; 95% CI, -1.37 to -0.03; P = 0.040). Abstract Background Poor nurse-patient relationship poses an obstacle to care delivery, jeopardizing patient experience and patient care outcomes. Measuring nurse-patient relationship is challenging given its multi-dimensional nature and a lack of well-established scales. Purpose This study aimed to develop a multi-dimensional scale measuring nurse-patient relationship in China. Methods A preliminary scale was constructed based on the existing literature and Delphi consultations with 12 nursing experts. The face validity of the scale was tested through a survey of 45 clinical nurses. This was followed by a validation study on 620 clinical nurses. Cronbach’s α, content validity and known-group validity of the scale were assessed. The study sample was further divided into two for Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), respectively, to assess the construct validity of the scale. Results The Nurse-Patient Relationship Scale (NPRS) containing 23 items was developed and validated, measuring five dimensions: nursing behavior, nurse understanding and respect for patient, patient misunderstanding and mistrust in nurse, communication with patient, and interaction with patient. The Cronbach’s α of the NPRS ranged from 0.725 to 0.932, indicating high internal consistency. The CFA showed excellent fitness of data into the five-factor structure: χ2/df = 2.431, GFI = 0.933, TLI = 0.923, CFI = 0.939, IFI = 0.923, RMSEA = 0.070. Good content and construct validity are demonstrated through expert consensus and psychometric tests. Conclusion The NPRS is a valid tool measuring nurse-patient relationship in China.

Abstract Soil, as a primary repository of plastic debris, faces an escalating influx of microplastics. Microplastics have the potential to decrease soil bulk density and pH, as well as alter soil pore structure and aggregation. These changes in soil physicochemical properties subsequently lead to habitat degradation for microbes and environmental shifts that impact plant growth. Masquerading as soil carbon storage, microplastics can distort assessments of the soil carbon pool by introducing plastic-carbon and associated leachates, influencing soil organic matter (SOM) turnover through priming effects (e.g., dilution, substrate switching, and co-metabolisms). Additionally, microplastics can influence the distribution of soil carbon in particulate and mineral-associated organic matter, consequently affecting the accumulation and stability of soil carbon. Furthermore, microplastics can also influence the chemodiversity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soils by increasing DOM aromaticity and molecular weight while deepening its humification degree. The changes observed in soil DOM may be attributed to inputs from microplastic-derived DOM along with organo-organic and organo-mineral interactions coupled with microbial degradation processes. Acting as an inert source of carbon, microplastics create a distinct ecological niche for microbial growth and contribute to necromass formation pathways. Conventional microplastics can reduce microbial necromass carbon contribution to the stable pool of soil carbon, whereas bio-microplastics tend to increase it. Furthermore, microplastics exert a wide range of effects on plant performance through both internal and external factors, influencing seed germination, vegetative and reproductive growth, as well as inducing ecotoxicity and genotoxicity. These impacts may arise from alterations in the growth environment or the uptake of microplastics by plants. Future research should aim to elucidate the impact of microplastics on microbial necromass accumulation and carbon storage within mineral-associated fractions, while also paying closer attention to rhizosphere dynamics such as the microbial stabilization and mineral protection for rhizodeposits within soils. Abstract Aims Relationship between body mass index (BMI), frailty, and clinical adverse events remains unclear in patients with heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in different patient populations. We aimed to compare the association of BMI, frailty, and clinical adverse events between a US cohort from the Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist (TOPCAT) study and a Chinese cohort from the Heart Failure Registry of Patient Outcomes (HERO) study. Methods and results We used data of 1715 participants enrolled from America in the TOPCAT study and 1487 patients with HFpEF in the Chinese registry study, the HERO. We evaluated the relationship between BMI and frailty using multivariate restricted cubic spline logistic regression. Association between frailty and BMI categories and primary outcomes including HF hospitalization, aborted sudden death, and cardiovascular death, all‐cause mortality, and HF hospitalization were analysed by Cox proportional hazards models. The patients' mean age was 72 ± 11 years for both study populations, with 50% and 46% female for the TOPCAT study and the HERO study, respectively. Patients in the TOPCAT study had a higher mean BMI (33.9 vs. 24 kg/m2), with 72.3% vs. 52.9% defined as moderately to severely frail (frailty index > 0.3). In the TOPCAT study, risk of frailty rose as BMI increased, but not in the HERO study. Patients with frailty were at significant higher risk for the primary composite outcomes [hazard ratio (HR) 1.84 (95% confidence interval: 1.46–2.32)], all‐cause mortality [HR 1.73 (1.34–2.25)], and HF hospitalization [HR 1.83 (1.40–2.40)] in the TOPCAT study. The corresponding numbers in the HERO study were 1.26 (1.01–1.57), 2.21 (1.45–3.35), and 1.15 (0.81–1.37), respectively. The association of frailty with clinical outcomes did not vary with BMI categories in the two studies. Conclusions BMI distribution and association between BMI and frailty risk were different between the two study populations. Frailty was associated with clinical adverse events and this association was consistent across different BMI categories in both studies.

Chronic systemic inflammation in obesity-associated type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a key inducing factor of insulin resistance (IR). Hydrogen molecule (H2) has been proved to be a safe and effective anti-inflammatory agent, but conventional H2 administration methods cannot provide a high dosage and a long duration of H2 treatment in IR-related tissues and thus lead to limited therapeutic efficacies. We here propose a new strategy of controlled H2 release to match the time window of gastric emptying for maximizing the bioavailability and therapeutic outcome of H2. This work enhances the hydrolysis rate of Zn by constructing a Zn-Fe primary-battery micro-/nano-structure, and the H2-releasing rate is adjusted by tuning the ratio of Zn to Fe. The Zn-Fe micro-/nano-structure is orally administrated once daily to alleviate obesity-associated T2D in a leptin-deficient (ob/ob) mouse model. The H2 generation time of the Zn-Fe primary-battery micro-/nano-structure with the Fe/Zn ratio of 1:100 in gastric acid is about 3 h, just matching with the time window of gastric emptying in mice. In vivo monitoring results show that H2 generated by Zn-Fe micro-/nano-structure in stomach can effectively accumulate in major IR-sited tissues including liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle at a high dose for a relatively long time compared to H2-rich water drinking. Oral administration of Zn-Fe micro-/nano-structure at 200 mg/kg body weight has realized an efficient IR improvement and remarkably ameliorated systemic inflammation in ob/ob mice. In addition, a high-dose administration of Zn-Fe shows no visible toxicity in mice. This work provides a new strategy to maximize the outcome of hydrogen therapy.

Constipation symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) seriously reduce the quality of life of patients and aggravate the development of the disease, but current treatment options still cannot alleviate the progress of constipation. Electroacupuncture (EA) is a new method for the treatment of constipation, which can effectively treat the symptoms of constipation in PD patients. However, the specific regulatory mechanisms of EA in the treatment of constipation symptoms in PD remain unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the therapeutic effect of EA on PD constipation rats and its regulatory mechanism. A rotenone (ROT)-induced gastrointestinal motility disorder model was used to simulate the pathological process of constipation in PD. The results showed that EA could effectively promote gastrointestinal peristalsis, reduce α-synuclein accumulation in substantia nigra and colon and colonic injury in rats after ROT administration. Mechanistically, EA activation of the central-cholinergic pathway increases acetylcholine release in the colon. At the same time, EA up-regulated the co-expression of enteric glial cells (EGCs) and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR). EA increased the expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the colon of PD rats. Further mechanistic studies showed that EA increased the expression of glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), GFRa1 and p-AKT in colon tissues. The present study confirmed that EA upregulates α7nAChR through a central-cholinergic mechanism to promote GDNF release from EGCs, thereby protecting intestinal neurons and thereby improving gastrointestinal motility.

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. The role of Th17/Treg balance in RA pathogenesis has been increasingly emphasized. In this study, bibliometric and visualization analyses of the top 100 most cited articles on Th17/Treg balance in the field of RA were conducted. Methods: By searching the Web of Science Core Collection database, the top 100 most cited articles of related studies were included, and the authors, countries, institutions, journals, keywords and other information were extracted for analysis using VOSviewer software. Results: The top 100 most cited papers had a total of 7185 citations, with an average citation frequency of 72 (range 21–730). All of them were published between 2011 and 2022. The most influential paper, with 730 citations, was written by “Komatsu, Noriko” in 2014 and published in NATURE MEDICINE. The author with the highest output was “Cho, Mi-La” (n = 24). China was the country with the highest number of publications (n = 42). Catholic University of Korea was the institution with the highest number of publications (n = 24). ARTHRITIS AND RHEUMATISM (n = 7), ARTHRITIS & RHEUMATOLOGY (n = 7) and INTERNATIONAL IMMUNOPHARMACOLOGY (n = 7) were the journals that published the most literature. “Expression” (cytokines and transcription factors, etc) and “differentiation” (T cells, Treg cells, and Th17 cells) were the themes of the research. “Mechanisms”, “gut microbiota”, “STAT3”, “interleukin-6”, “synovial fibroblasts” were the hot spots of research in recent years. Conclusions: For the first time, the top 100 most cited articles were analyzed using bibliometric methods. We aimed to grasp the current development and research trends of RA and Th17/Treg-related studies. It is hoped that this study will provide direction and support for future research.

Abstract Reactive oxygen species (ROS)‐mediated oxidative stress and apoptosis contribute to the pathogenesis and pathological conditions of various diseases induced by food and environmental pollutants. Myricetin and dihydromyricetin, as natural flavonoids, can counteract oxidative damage, apoptosis, and associated diseases. Molecular docking analysis, ELISA, fluorescence spectroscopy, and Western blot techniques were applied to examine the potential of the two flavonoids as effective therapeutics for ROS‐mediated diseases and the mechanism(s) underlying their protective effects against ethanol/H2O2‐induced damage. In Kunming mice and HepG2 cells, myricetin and dihydromyricetin inhibited ethanol/H2O2‐induced liver damage, ROS accumulation, and oxidative stress and apoptosis. Molecular docking showed that myricetin and dihydromyricetin interacted with JNK1 via hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds, thereby exerting their protective effects. The significant differences in their binding patterns to JNK1 resulted from the different bond types between C2 and C3 on their C ring. Myricetin and dihydromyricetin likely protected liver injury via counteracting ROS/JNK1‐mediated oxidative stress and apoptosis. The finding that the suppression of ROS‐mediated oxidative stress and apoptosis by flavonoids via interacting with functional proteins, such as kinase, may represent an alternative strategy for treating excessive ROS‐induced health problems.

Drought-resistant plants exhibit strong water retention capability. In this regard, the autotetraploid sour jujube leaves exhibit better water retention than diploid leaves. Morphological comparisons and physiological comparisons of diploid and autotetraploid leaves showed that the autotetraploid leaves had thicker leaf cuticles and more leaf wax accumulation than the diploid leaves, which could reduce cuticle permeability and improve the drought tolerance of leaves. In this study, the cuticular wax crystalloids on the adaxial and abaxial sides of young and mature jujube leaves were observed in the two ploidy types, and unique cuticular wax crystalloids covering a large area of the cuticle on autotetraploid sour jujube leaves may provide an advantage in reducing leaf non-stomata transpiration and improving plant drought tolerance. Based on the transcriptome, 115 differentially expressed genes between diploids and autotetraploids were further analyzed and found to be involved in the accumulation of cuticular wax components, including terpenoids, fatty acids, and lipids, as well as ABC transporter and wax biosynthetic process. Finally, 14 genes differentially expressed between glossy autotetraploid leaves and nonglossy diploid leaves, such as LOC107414787, LOC107411574 and LOC107413721, were screened as candidate genes by qRT-PCR analysis. This findings provided insights into how polyploidization improved drought tolerance.

Pathogenic and free-living Acanthamoeba are widely distributed in the environment and have been reported to cause keratitis and universally fatal encephalitis. Primary cutaneous acanthamoebiasis caused by Acanthamoeba is exceedingly rare and presents as isolated necrotic cutaneous lesions without involvement of the cornea or central nervous system. Cutaneous acanthamoebiasis often occurs in immunocompromised patients and is likely overlooked or even misdiagnosed only by cutaneous biopsy tissue histopathological analysis. Here, we report a HIV-infected 63-year-old female with oral leukoplakia for 4 months and scattered large skin ulcers all over the body for 2 months. The cause of the cutaneous lesions was unclear through cutaneous specimens histopathological analysis, and subsequently Acanthamoeba were detected by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), which may be the cause of cutaneous lesions. Based on the mNGS results, a pathologist subsequently reviewed the previous pathological slides and found trophozoites of Acanthamoeba so that the cause was identified, and the skin ulcers improved significantly after treatment with multi-drug combination therapy. Acanthamoeba is also a host of pathogenic microorganisms. The presence of endosymbionts enhances the pathogenicity of Acanthamoeba, and no other pathogens were reported in this case. mNGS is helpful for rapidly diagnosing the etiology of rare skin diseases and can indicate the presence or absence of commensal microorganisms.

Background: Hypertension is a prevalent condition with significant impacts on human health. Chinese herbal foot bath, a traditional Chinese medicine treatment, is believed to help manage hypertension. Objective: This systematic review aims to assess the efficacy of combining Chinese herbal foot bath with conventional treatment for hypertension. Methods: A thorough search across eight databases was conducted to identify relevant studies on Chinese herbal foot bath for hypertension. Randomized controlled trials examining the benefits and risks of using Chinese herbal foot bath combined with conventional treatment for hypertension were included. Blood pressure changes before and after the Chinese herbal foot bath were assessed, and outcomes were analyzed using Review Manager 5.3 software. The certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE tool. Results: Compared to conventional treatment, Chinese herbal foot bath combined with conventional treatment demonstrated greater effectiveness in reducing systolic blood pressure (MD 6.69, 95% CI: 5.86 to 7.53, p

Transition metal sulfides have garnered increasing attention for their role in persulfate activation, a crucial process in environmental remediation. However, the function of metal sulfides without reversible valence changes, such as ZnS, remains largely unexplored in this context. Here we report ZnS-embedded porous carbon (ZnS-C), synthesized through the pyrolysis of Zn-MOF-74 and dibenzyl disulfide. ZnS-C demonstrates remarkable activity in activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) across a wide pH range, enabling the efficient mineralization removal of bisphenol A (BPA). Through electrochemical investigation and theoretical simulations of charge density distributions, we unveil that the electron transfer from BPA to PDS mediated by the ZnS-C catalyst governs the reaction. This study, both in theory and experiment, demonstrates metal sulfide as electron pump that enhances electron transfer efficiency in PDS activation. These findings redefine the role of metal sulfide catalysts, shedding new light on their potential for regulating reaction pathways in PDS activation processes.

In spectral-based ink content measurement, improving the accuracy of the spectral collection system and reducing the algorithm complexity of the ink content measurement model are important aspects of research. This study designs a spectral collection system with an M-type Czerny–Turner optical path structure, uses a third-order polynomial fitting method for calibration analysis, collects the spectral of the standard color card and denoises it through Savitzky–Golay convolution smoothing, and establishes a functional relationship between the spectral and the logarithm of ink content. Uninformative Variable Elimination (UVE) and Competitive Adaptive Reweighting Sampling are used to perform comparative analysis on feature wavelength extraction, and a prediction model for printing ink content is established. Experimental results show that the R2 of ink C, ink M, and ink Y are 0.9981, 0.9975, and 0.9892, respectively, and the root mean square error is 0.0134, 0.0153, and 0.0317, respectively, showing good performance in ink prediction accuracy.

Abstract Osteoporosis (OP) is a systematic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and fragile bone microarchitecture. Conventional treatment for OP has limited efficacy and long‐term toxicity. Synthetic biology makes bacterial extracellular vesicle (BEVs)‐based therapeutic strategies a promising alternative for the treatment of OP. Here, we constructed a recombinant probiotics Escherichia coli Nissle 1917‐pET28a‐ClyA‐BMP‐2‐CXCR4 (ECN‐pClyA‐BMP‐2‐CXCR4), in which BMP‐2 and CXCR4 were overexpressed in fusion with BEVs surface protein ClyA. Subsequently, we isolated engineered BEVs‐BMP‐2‐CXCR4 (BEVs‐BC) for OP therapy. The engineered BEVs‐BC exhibited great bone targeting in vivo. In addition, BEVs‐BC had good biocompatibility and remarkable ability to promote osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Finally, the synthetic biology‐based BEVs‐BC significantly prevented the OP in an ovariectomized (OVX) mouse model. In conclusion, we constructed BEVs‐BC with both bone‐targeting and bone‐forming in one‐step using synthetic biology, which provides an effective strategy for OP and has great potential for industrialization.

Summary: New alien species are increasingly introduced and established outside their native range. The knowledge of the spatiotemporal dynamics of their accumulation and the factors determining their residence time in the introduced range is critical for proactive management, especially in emerging economies. Based on a comprehensive time series dataset of 721 alien angiosperms in China, we show that new alien flora has been accumulating steadily in China, particularly in the coastal regions, for the last 80 years without saturation. The ability to occupy a large number of habitats facilitates the early introduction of alien flora, whereas a large naturalized range, greater number of uses, and multiple introduction pathways directly contribute to their naturalization and invasion. The temporal pattern is predicted to remain consistent in the foreseeable future. We propose upgrading the country’s biosecurity infrastructure based on a standardized risk assessment framework to safeguard the country from ongoing and future invasions.

The visceral adiposity index (VAI) and handgrip strength (HGS) are identified as important objectives for the prevention of illness. Nevertheless, there is limited understanding regarding the impact of the VAI and HGS on cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM). We aimed to ascertain the impact of the VAI and HGS on CMM among middle-aged and older people. Data spanning from 2011 to 2020 were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). In total, 7909 individuals aged 45 years and older were included. Cox proportional hazard regression was utilized to examine the correlation among the VAI, HGS, and CMM. Throughout the 10-year follow-up, we determined that both the VAI (HR = 1.330; 95%CI = 1.179–1.500) and HGS (HR = 0.745, 95%CI = 0.645–0.861) exhibited significant associations with CMM risk. Individuals exposed to both a high VAI and low HGS were found to have higher hazards of CMM (HR = 1.377, 95%CI = 1.120–1.694) in contrast to participants exposed to one or none of these conditions. The older (HR = 1.414; 95%CI = 1.053–1.899) and male (HR = 1.586; 95%CI = 1.114–2.256) groups are more likely to experience CMM risk. Our findings suggest that both the VAI and HGS have significant effects on CMM risk. Appropriate interventions focused on vulnerable groups are recommended to prevent the incidence of CMM.

A weld is the main connection form of special equipment, and a weld is also the most vulnerable part of special equipment. Therefore, an effective detection of a weld is of great significance to improve the safety of special equipment. The traditional inspection method is not only time-consuming and labor-intensive, but also expensive. The welding seam tracking and inspection robot can greatly improve the inspection efficiency and save on inspection costs. Therefore, this paper proposes a welding seam tracking and inspection robot based on YOLOv8s-seg. Firstly, the MobileNetV3 lightweight backbone network is used to replace the backbone part of YOLOv8s-seg to reduce the model parameters. Secondly, we reconstruct C2f and prune the number of output channels of the new building module C2fGhost. Finally, in order to make up for the precision loss caused by the lightweight model, we add an EMA attention mechanism after each detection layer in the neck part of the model. The experimental results show that the accuracy of weld recognition reaches 97.8%, and the model size is only 4.88 MB. The improved model is embedded in Jetson nano, a robot control system for seam tracking and detection, and TensorRT is used to accelerate the reasoning of the model. The total reasoning time from image segmentation to path fitting is only 54 ms, which meets the real-time requirements of the robot for seam tracking and detection, and realizes the path planning of the robot for inspecting the seam efficiently and accurately.

Abstract Root metabolites and soil microbial community structure in the rhizosphere play critical roles in crop growth. Here, we assessed the efficiency of conventional and tissue culture propagation methods in modulating the soil health and microbiota in the rhizosphere of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) plants. The seeding canes were obtained using newly planted and two‐year ratooned canes propagated by conventional (CSN and CSR) or tissue culture (TCN and TCR) methods. Changes in soil fertility, root metabolites and soil microbial community structure in the rhizosphere of sugarcane plants obtained using these canes were assessed. The activities of soil β‐glucosidase and aminopeptidase, soil microbial biomass nitrogen, and abundances of soil beneficial microbes, both at phyla and genera levels, were significantly higher in the rhizosphere of sugarcane plants in TCN and TCR treatments than those in that of plants in CSN and CSR treatments. Furthermore, flavonoid and flavonol biosynthesis and alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism were significantly upregulated in the roots of TCR and TCN plants compared with those in the roots of CSN and CSR plants. These results suggest that the tissue culture propagation method is a sustainable method for sugarcane cultivation to improve soil fertility and health in sugarcane rhizosphere.

In this paper, a variable-structure multimodel (VSMM) filtering algorithm based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) regression-deep Q network (L-DQN) is proposed to accurately track strong maneuvering targets. The algorithm can map the selection of the model set to the selection of the action label and realize the purpose of a deep reinforcement-learning agent to replace the model switching in the traditional VSMM algorithm by reasonably designing a reward function, state space, and network structure. At the same time, the algorithm introduces a LSTM algorithm, which can compensate the error of tracking results based on model history information. The simulation results show that compared with the traditional VSMM algorithm, the proposed algorithm can quickly capture the maneuvering of the target, the response time is short, the calculation accuracy is significantly improved, and the range of adaptation is wider. Precise tracking of maneuvering targets was achieved.

To explore how endophytic microbial compositions in amaranth roots are influenced by various fertilization methods and to determine whether these microbes are associated with amaranthin formation, we conducted an analysis of the endophytic microbial community structure. The roots of amaranth plants subjected to different fertilization treatments—conventional fertilization without potassium (NP), conventional fertilization without phosphorus (NK), conventional fertilization without nitrogen (PK), and balanced fertilization (NPK)—were examined. The results showed that the proportions of Streptomyces, Actinospica, and Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia in the amaranth roots under the balanced fertilization (NPK) treatment were all greater than those in the amaranth roots under the nitrogen (PK), phosphorus (NK), and potassium (NP) deficiency fertilization treatments. In contrast, the proportions of Phenylobacterium, Acrocalymma, Neocosmospora, Fusarium, Acidovorax, Gibellulopsis, Cladosporium, Dactylonectria, and Gibberella in the amaranth roots under the nutrient deficiency fertilization (NP, NK, and PK) treatments were higher than those in the amaranth roots under the balanced fertilization treatment. Additionally, a significantly positive correlation was found between Streptomyces and the amaranthin content. Furthermore, Acrocalymma, Neocosmospora, and Fusarium exhibited significantly negative correlations with the amaranthin content. The above results suggested that endophytes could easily colonize in amaranth roots as beneficial microorganisms under balanced fertilization conditions. In other words, the balanced fertilization (N, P and K fertilizers are 188.0, 53.0 and 50.0 kg·hm−2, respectively) could recruit more beneficial endogenous microorganisms in amaranth roots for improving their growth and quality.

In this study, we explore the impact of the astigmatism phase on the evolution of the phase singularity of an orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam propagating through free space. The results demonstrate that the high-order phase singularity dispersed into a cluster of individual unit phase singularities owing to the astigmatism phase. The number of singularities equaled the topological charge of the OAM beam. By adjusting the astigmatism phase, we could manipulate and control the evolution of the phase singularities, including their displacements and rotation angles. These findings offer significant prospects for customizing 3D vortex lines, optical topologies, and applications involving topological charge measurement, information encoding, and transfer.
