Abstract The reduction of interfacial interaction and the deterioration of processing properties of aluminum hydrides (AlH3) is the main challenges preventing its practical application. Here, a simple and effective core–shell structure aluminum hydrides@polydopamine (AlH3@PDA) complex was constructed through in-situ polymerization. The evolution of element states on the surface of AlH3 conducted by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the successful introduction of PDA to form the core@shell structure, the thickness of the PDA coated layer increased with the increasing PDA dosage from 0.1 to 1.6% in mass fraction, and the maximum of thickness is 50 nm in TEM testing. Py GC/MS results proved that the increase of dopamine concentration leads to higher proportions of self-assemble units, whereas lower dopamine concentrations favor higher levels of chemical bonded components. Regarding whether PDA is a covalent polymer or a noncovalent aggregate of some species, the formation of intermediates, such as dopaminechrome and 5,6-dihydroxyindole played an important role to coordination interaction with AlH3 in FTIR, Raman, and UV–Vis spectra testing. Compared with pure AlH3, the formation of organic PDA coating improved AlH3 heat resistance. The adhesion work with GAP adhesive was also improved from 107.02 J/m2 of pure AlH3 to 111.13 mJ/m2 of AlH3@PDA-5 complex. This paper provides well support for further practical application of AlH3 in solid propellants.

With rapid development of holography, metasurface-based holographic communication scheme shows great potential in development of adaptive electromagnetic function. However, conventional passive metasurfaces are severely limited by poor reconfigurability, which makes it difficult to achieve wavefront manipulations in real time. Here, we propose a holographic communication strategy that on-demand target information is firstly acquired and encoded via a depth camera integrated with modified YOLOv5s target detection algorithm, then transmitted by software defined radio modules with long term evolution at 5 GHz, and finally reproduced in the form of holographic images by spin-decoupled programmable coding metasurfaces at 12 GHz after decoding through modified Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the brand-new concept of optical information conversion to electromagnetic one via above intelligent scheme. Our strategy may open a novel avenue toward applications of near-field communication based on adaptive variation of electric field patterns (i.e. holographic images).

Camouflage is an important technology in various scenarios. Usually, this involves the visible compatibility of the background, which however is facile under infrared thermal radiation detection. The simultaneous visible and thermal camouflage are challenging because it requires full and decoupled manipulations of visible reflection and infrared emissivity using one single device, let alone to its adaptivity to complex environments. Here, we report a programmable, colored thermal camouflage at 3–5 μm and 8–14 μm based on mode coupling in phase-change In3SbTe2 materials. A series of industry-friendly colored multilayer thermal emitters are designed consisting of an anti-reflectance layer for structure coloration above a coupled nanocavity for IR modulation, which easily realizes the complete decoupled control of visible color and infrared emissivity. Our solution features independent structural visible colors in the full visible range and continuously programmable dual-band emissivity modulation with up to 90 % absolute tuning range. Our work facilitates near optimal camouflage and anti-counterfeiting solution for visible-infrared multi-band compatibility of complex environments under different temperatures and colored appearances.

To address the issues of low grinding efficiency and the tendency of blockage and burning of the grinding wheel when working with ceramic materials using traditional resin and electroplated diamond grinding wheels, the feasibility of using brazed diamond technology to prepare a multilayer brazed diamond grinding wheel for ceramic grinding is analyzed. Combined with the optimization of filler metal composition, a multilayer brazed diamond grinding wheel with a slotted structure is prepared, and the grinding performance of 99.9% high-purity Al2O3 ceramics is tested. The results show that resin and electroplated diamond grinding wheels suffer from low grinding efficiency and insufficient grinding life, respectively. Single-layer brazed diamond grinding wheels exhibit high grinding efficiency but have limited grinding life. Multilayer brazed diamond grinding wheels show obvious advantages in terms of grinding life while maintaining high grinding efficiency, being about 60% higher than that of single-layer brazed diamond grinding wheels. During the ceramic material grinding process, the multilayer brazed diamond grinding wheel demonstrates remarkable grinding effectiveness. Despite the limited exposed height of abrasive particles, the slotting design significantly enhances chip removal, preventing the wheel's surface from bonding and blocking with ceramic powder.

Abstract Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used for several centuries for metabolic diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). At present, NAFLD has become the most prevalent form of chronic liver disease worldwide and can progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. However, there is still a lack of effective treatment strategies in Western medicine. The development of NAFLD is driven by multiple mechanisms, including genetic factors, insulin resistance, lipotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, endoplasmic reticulum stress, inflammation, gut microbiota dysbiosis, and adipose tissue dysfunction. Currently, certain drugs, including insulin sensitizers, statins, vitamin E, ursodeoxycholic acid and betaine, are proven to be beneficial for the clinical treatment of NAFLD. Due to its complex pathogenesis, personalized medicine that integrates various mechanisms may provide better benefits to patients with NAFLD. The holistic view and syndrome differentiation of TCM have advantages in treating NAFLD, which are similar to the principles of personalized medicine. In TCM, NAFLD is primarily classified into five types based on clinical experience. It is located in the liver and is closely related to spleen and kidney functions. However, due to the multi-component characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine, its application in the treatment of NAFLD has been considerably limited. In this review, we summarize the advances in the pathogenesis and treatment of NAFLD, drawn from both the Western medicine and TCM perspectives. We highlight that Chinese and Western medicine have complementary advantages and should receive increased attention in the prevention and treatment of NAFLD.

Abstract In a recent Nature elegant study, Wang et al. identified CD300ld, a novel functionally highly conserved tumor immunosuppressive receptor, highly expressed specifically on polymorphonuclear myeloid‐derived suppressor cells (PMN‐MDSCs), as well as a key receptor in the regulation of recruitment and immunosuppressive function of PMN‐MDSCs. Targeting CD300ld could remodel the tumor immune microenvironment, resulting in a broad‐spectrum anti‐tumor effect.

The broader application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is constrained by safety concerns arising from thermal runaway (TR). Accurate prediction of TR is essential to comprehend its underlying mechanisms, expedite battery design, and enhance safety protocols, thereby significantly promoting the safer use of LIBs. The complex, nonlinear nature of LIB systems presents substantial challenges in TR modeling, stemming from the need to address multiscale simulations, multiphysics coupling, and computing efficiency issues. This paper provides an extensive review and outlook on TR modeling technologies, focusing on recent advances, current challenges, and potential future directions. We begin with an overview of the evolutionary processes and underlying mechanisms of TR from multiscale perspectives, laying the foundation for TR modeling. Following a comprehensive understanding of TR phenomena and mechanisms, we introduce a multiphysics coupling model framework to encapsulate these aspects. Within this framework, we detail four fundamental physics modeling approaches: thermal, electrical, mechanical, and fluid dynamic models, highlighting the primary challenges in developing and integrating these models. To address the intrinsic trade-off between computational accuracy and efficiency, we discuss several promising modeling strategies to accelerate TR simulations and explore the role of AI in advancing next-generation TR models. Last, we discuss challenges related to data availability, model scalability, and safety standards and regulations.

PurposeThis study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of establishing an arterial acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) model in canines using transcatheter autologous thrombus administration.Materials and methodsTen canines were divided into the experimental group (Group A, n = 5) and the sham group (Group B, n = 5). The canines in Group A received thrombus administration to the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) through a guiding catheter, while the canines in Group B received normal saline administration. Blood samples were collected and tested at baseline and 2 h after modelling. Canines in Group A underwent manual thromboaspiration after blood and intestine samples were collected. Ischaemic grades of intestinal mucosa were evaluated under light microscopes.ResultsThe AMI models were successfully conducted in all canines without procedure-related vessel injury or death. At the 2-h follow-up, the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and D-dimer in Group A were significantly higher than in Group B (5.72 ± 1.8 mg/L vs. 2.82 ± 1.5 mg/L, p = 0.024; 2.25 ± 0.8 μg/mL vs. 0.27 ± 0.10 μg/mL, p = 0.005; respectively). Objectives: To develop a novel and accurate nomogram to predict survival without amputation in patients with acute lower limb ischemia (ALLI) during the first year following endovascular therapy. Methods: Patients with ALLI who underwent endovascular therapy in our department between January 2012 and September 2020 were screened and included in the research. The included patients were randomly divided into a training and validation cohorts, respectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used in the training cohort to identify independent risk factors for amputation-free survival (AFS). A nomogram was then developed according to the identified independent risk factors. The nomogram was then validated in the validation cohort. Results: 415 Chinese patients with 417 affected limbs were included in this study. Among these patients, 311 patients were classified into the training cohort and 104 patients were assigned to the validation cohort. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly recognized for its global prevalence and potential progression to more severe liver diseases such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The primary treatment for NASH is modifying lifestyle through dietary or exercise interventions. The aim of the current study is to investigate the roles of Fufang Zhenzhu Tiaozhi polysaccharides (FTZPs) in mice with NASH. FTZPs were concurrently administered to high-fat diet (HFD)-induced 24-week NASH model mice. FTZPs treatment effectively improved liver lipid metabolism, reduced inflammation and fibrosis, improved the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and modulated the structure of the intestinal microbiota. FTZPs treatment significantly reduced the abundance of Gammaproteobacteria, Clostridium, and Coprococcus while as induced the abundance of Dehalobacteraceae and Dehalobacterium. Furthermore, sixteen differential metabolites were screened by metabolomics, and the change of asparagine was the most significant. In addition, the correlation analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between asparagine and the aforementioned differential bacteria. The present study demonstrated that FTZPs, as the fundamental pharmacological elements of FTZ (Fufang Zhenzhu Tiaozhi), protect against NASH by improving intestinal barrier damage and regulating intestinal flora with the increase in asparagine.

In cold regions, rocks undergo periodic temperature fluctuations, resulting in deterioration in pore structure and mechanical behavior. This degradation can lead to instability in rock masses and contribute to landslides. While many studies have investigated the effects of freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles on the mechanical behavior of rocks, the micro-level mechanisms of deterioration remain less understood. In this study, the evolution of the pore structure of a prefabricated sandstone with 30 freeze-thaw cycles ranging from −20°C to 20°C is explored using CT scanning. The influence of the prefabricated crack is highlighted. The results indicate a significant impact of freeze-thaw cycles on large pores, with their proportion increasing from 15.28% to 38.72% after 30 F-T cycles. Within the initial 10 F-T cycles, pore structure changes occur without the expansion of prefabricated crack. However, after 15 F-T cycles, prefabricated crack begins extending downward, eventually becoming nearly continuous after 30 F-T cycles. Prefabricated crack notably influences pore distribution during freeze-thaw cycles, with higher porosity near the fracture, where pores initially expand and connect. These findings provide insights into the damage mechanism in sandstone under F-T cycles.

BackgroundClinical signs of dysphagia, pancreatic achalasia, and esophagitis have been reported in patients with COVID-19. However, the causal relationship between COVID-19 and esophageal diseases is not clear. Therefore, we utilized Mendelian randomization to explore the potential association between COVID-19 and esophageal diseases.MethodsThe summary statistics for a Genome-wide association study (GWAS) were obtained from The COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative, encompassing four types of COVID-19 as exposure: severe COVID-19, hospitalized COVID-19 versus ambulatory COVID-19, hospitalized COVID-19 versus uninfected, and confirmed COVID-19. Additionally, summary statistics for ten esophageal diseases as outcomes were sourced from the GWAS Catalog and FinnGen databases. Univariate Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was utilized to thoroughly investigate and validate the potential causal association between COVID-19 and various esophageal conditions, including esophageal varices, Barrett’s esophagus, esophagitis, esophageal obstruction, esophageal ulcer, esophageal perforation, gastroesophageal reflux, congenital esophageal malformations, benign esophageal tumors, and esophageal adenocarcinoma.ResultsAn inverse variance-weighted (IVW) model was utilized for univariate Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, which revealed that genetic liability in patients with confirmed COVID-19 was associated with esophageal obstruction (OR [95% CI]: 0.5275458 [0.2822400–0.9860563]; p-value = 0.0450699). Furthermore, a suggestive causal association was found between genetic liability and a reduced risk of benign esophageal tumors (OR [95% CI]: 0.2715453 [0.09368493–0.7870724]; p-value = 0.0163510), but with a suggestively increased risk of congenital esophageal malformations (OR [95% CI]: 6.959561 [1.1955828–40.51204]; p-value = 0.03086835). Additionally, genetic liability in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, compared to non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients, was suggestively associated with an increased risk of esophagitis (OR [95% CI]: 1.443859 [1.0890568–1.914252]; p-value = 0.01068201). The reliability of these causal findings is supported by Cochran’s Q statistic and the MR-Egger intercept test.ConclusionThe results of this study suggest the existence of a causal relationship between COVID-19 and esophageal diseases, highlighting differing risk effects of COVID-19 on distinct esophageal conditions.

Abstract We present a self-consistent method based on first-principles calculations to determine the magnetic ground state of materials, regardless of their dimensionality. Our methodology is founded on satisfying the stability conditions derived from the linear spin wave theory (LSWT) by optimizing the magnetic structure iteratively. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by successfully predicting the experimental magnetic structures of NiO, FePS3, FeP, MnF2, FeCl2, and CuO. In each case, we compared our results with available experimental data and existing theoretical calculations reported in the literature. Finally, we discuss the validity of the method and the possible extensions.

This study investigates the effect of short sales on firms' use of trade credit. Using a sample of 3262 Chinese listed firms from 2007 to 2019, the analysis results show that both the deregulation and the magnitude of short sales negatively affect trade credit. The transmission mechanism indicates that firms' access to formal financing decreases after short sales deregulation, which mitigates firms’ ability to redistribute formal financing through trade credit. Moreover, the results suggest that shortable firms tend to adopt a moderate trade credit policy and adjust their trade credit to the target level at a lower rate than non-shortable firms. This study reveals the features of the short sales–trade credit relationship in an emerging market.

Stimulator of interferon genes (STING) is a crucial innate immune sensor responsible for distinguishing pathogens and cytosolic DNA, mediating innate immune signaling pathways to defend the host. Recent studies have revealed additional regulatory functions of STING beyond its innate immune-related activities, including the regulation of cellular metabolism, DNA repair, cellular senescence, autophagy and various cell deaths. These findings highlight the broader implications of STING in cellular physiology beyond its role in innate immunity. Currently, approximately 10 STING agonists have entered the clinical stage. Unlike inhibitors, which have a maximum inhibition limit, agonists have the potential for infinite amplification. STING signaling is a complex process that requires precise regulation of STING to ensure balanced immune responses and prevent detrimental autoinflammation. Recent research on the structural mechanism of STING autoinhibition and its negative regulation by adaptor protein complex 1 (AP-1) provides valuable insights into its different effects under physiological and pathological conditions, offering a new perspective for developing immune regulatory drugs. Herein, we present a comprehensive overview of the regulatory functions and molecular mechanisms of STING beyond innate immune regulation, along with updated details of its structural mechanisms. We discuss the implications of these complex regulations in various diseases, emphasizing the importance and feasibility of targeting the immunity-dependent or immunity-independent functions of STING. Moreover, we highlight the current trend in drug development and key points for clinical research, basic research, and translational research related to STING.

The two-step thermal stress calculation method (TTSCM) is commonly used to predict the cracking temperature of asphalt mixture. The aim of this study is to improve TTSCM’s mathematical model so as to enhance its prediction accuracy. First, this study evaluated the errors of predicted cracking temperatures of original TTSCM for AC-16 and AC-25 asphalt mixtures by thermal stress-restrained specimen test (TSRST). Then, an improved method called the extended creep compliance test (ECCT) was developed to modify the TTSCM. The test results show that the cracking predictions of the original TTSCM are not always accurate. Particularly for AC-16 asphalt mixture, the predicted cracking temperature is 2.9 °C (−10.6%) higher than the measured value by the TSRST. The ECCT method has been proven to be an effective way to enhance the prediction accuracy of the TTSCM. The predicted cracking temperatures modified by the ECCT method for both asphalt mixtures are relatively accurate, having an error within ±2%. The ECCT method changed the calculated thermal stress values at different temperatures of the TTSCM; however, they still conformed to a basic changing trend with respect to the initial temperature and cooling rate. Finally, a recommendation regarding the ECCT method was presented.

Pyrethroid pesticides (PYRs) have found widespread application in agriculture for the protection of fruit and vegetable crops. Nonetheless, excessive usage or improper application may allow the residues to exceed the safe limits and pose a threat to consumer safety. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop efficient technologies for the elimination or trace detection of PYRs from vegetables. Here, a simple and efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) strategy was developed for the simultaneous purification and enrichment of five PYRs in vegetables, employing the magnetic covalent organic framework nanomaterial COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 as an adsorbent. COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 was prepared by a straightforward solvothermal method, using Fe3O4 as a magnetic core and benzidine and 3,3,5,5-tetraaldehyde biphenyl as the two building units. COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 could effectively capture the targeted PYRs by virtue of its abundant π-electron system and hydroxyl groups. The impact of various experimental parameters on the extraction efficiency was investigated to optimize the MSPE conditions, including the adsorbent amount, extraction time, elution solvent type and elution time. Subsequently, method validation was conducted under the optimal conditions in conjunction with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Within the range of 5.00–100 μg·kg−1 (1.00–100 μg·kg−1 for bifenthrin and 2.5–100 μg·kg−1 for fenpropathrin), the five PYRs exhibited a strong linear relationship, with determination coefficients ranging from 0.9990 to 0.9997. The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.3–1.5 μg·kg−1, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.9–4.5 μg·kg−1. The recoveries were 80.2–116.7% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 7.0%. Finally, COF-SiO2@Fe3O4, NH2-SiO2@Fe3O4 and Fe3O4 were compared as MSPE adsorbents for PYRs. The results indicated that COF-SiO2@Fe3O4 was an efficient and rapid selective adsorbent for PYRs. This method holds promise for the determination of PYRs in real samples.

In the context of global warming it remains challenging to evaluate declining of soil erosion due to ecological engineering measures, and to isolate and quantify the contributions of various factors involved in soil erosion. For this study, soil erosion and soil conservation dynamics in the Ganjiang River Basin (GRB) in southeast China were quantitatively assessed based on the Integrated Ecosystem Services and Tradeoff Assessment (InVEST) model. Based on the analysis of the attribution factors of precipitation and Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC), the dominant factors involved in soil erosion were determined by scenario comparison, where the areas with high sensitivity to erosion were quantitatively identified. The results revealed that both simulated value of soil erosion and sediment export initially decreased and then increased from 2000 to 2020; however, the total increases over the last 20 years were 14 % and 18.18 %, respectively. Moreover, the erosion intensity and sediment delivery ratio (SDR) decreased due to the influence of engineering measures such as reservoirs. Precipitation was the dominant factor that affected GRB soil erosion, with its contribution ratio (40 %-60 %) being as high as 94.74 %. In other words, in the GRB, precipitation inhibited the mitigation effect of high vegetation cover on soil erosion, and the contributions of FVC and precipitation showed a vertical trend. The extremely sensitive area caused by FVC is situated in the economically developed cities along the river system in the middle portion of the basin, while the extremely sensitive area caused by precipitation resides in the middle and upper reaches of the western portion of the basin. Based on this, prioritized protection areas can be determined.

According to statistics, 80% of failed components in mechanical equipment are caused by various types of wear and corrosion. Therefore, in order to reduce material loss, research on wear-resistant materials is urgent. In order to solve the difficulty of directly observing the infiltration process of liquid metal in preform, this study first conducted infiltration experiments on liquid metal in ZTA ceramic particle preform at different pouring temperatures, and then used Fluent software to numerically simulate the infiltration behavior of liquid metal in preform. By changing parameters such as pouring temperature and infiltration pressure, the influence of these parameters on the penetration depth of liquid metal in prefabricated structures was determined. The research results indicate that when the pouring temperatures are 1420 °C, 1570 °C, 1720 °C, and 1870 °C, the infiltration depths are 4 mm, 8 mm, 11 mm, and 15 mm; when the casting infiltration pressures are 7620 Pa, 15,240 Pa, 22,860 Pa, and 30,480 Pa, the infiltration depths are 10 mm, 16 mm, 20 mm, and 22 mm. The simulation results of the pouring temperature on the infiltration depth are basically consistent with the experimental results.

The process of superhard particle breakage in the grinding zone of the fluidized bed opposed jet mill is investigated using the CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method) coupling method with the Tavares UFRJ Breakage Model in the present study. The effects of structural and operational parameters, such as target plate structure, nozzle position, air inlet velocity, and feed rate, on the equipment stress distribution, airflow velocity, pressure field, particle velocity, and cumulative particle size distribution are thoroughly studied to determine the optimal structural and operational parameters. Experimental validation is conducted, including scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation of particle morphology and analysis of particle size distribution of ground product particles. The simulation results indicate that the wear rate of the structure without a target plate is lower than that of the structure with a target plate in the grinding central zone. Therefore, the structure without a target plate is chosen for further investigation. The cumulative particle size distribution after grinding is influenced by nozzle position, air inlet velocity, and feed rate. The particle D50 is positively correlated with nozzle spacing and feed rate, while it is negatively correlated with air inlet velocity. The optimal grinding effect is achieved when the distance between the nozzle and the center of the grinding zone ranges from 52.5 mm to 72.55 mm, the air inlet velocity is 950 m/s, and the feed rate is 10.5 g/s. Through experimental investigation, it has been observed that when the feed rate is 10 g/s, the particle size distribution becomes more uniform. Furthermore, consistent trends in the cumulative particle size distribution in the experiment and simulation results can be found, which validates the present numerical model. It was observed that particles at low feed rates retain certain angular edges, while particle roundness increases at high feed rates.

Pressure nozzles are widely used in spray drying and other industries. In order to improve the atomization characteristics of pressure cyclone nozzles, a new type of annular jet gas impingement atomization device is developed. We use high-speed imaging and digital image processing and other methods to analyze the spray characteristics of the different annular device configurations (using four, six, and eight tubes) and under different gas–liquid mass flow rates. It is shown that with an increase in the Air–Liquid mass Ratio (ALR), the liquid film breakup process changes from undulating sheet breakup to perforated sheet breakup and the breakup length decreases. The breakup length decreases the most under the condition of six-tube airflow with the range of 31–55%, while the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) basically does not change. With the increase in ALR and the Weber number of liquid (Wel), the droplet size distribution becomes more uniform. The spray characteristics of the atomizer assisted by gas jets reaches the best state when Wel = 4596.3 and m˙g = 1.97 g/s. The experimental conclusions have some guiding significance for the design and optimization of the atomization devices in spray drying towers.

In this paper, theoretical analysis and system simulations are carried out to study the effects of the transmitter-compensated inductance mistuning on charging power, transfer efficiency, and the phase angle between the input voltage and input current in a wireless power transfer (WPT) system using inductor/capacitor/capacitor-series (LCC-S) topology. To cancel out the effects of the mistuning, an integrated transmitting coil design scheme is proposed, in which the transmitting coil is unipolar while the compensation coils are bipolar. Theoretical calculations and simulations are performed to show that the proposed compensation inductor guarantees the stability of the compensation inductance when the permeability of the magnetic sheet changes. Furthermore, it is verified that by using the integrated structure the effect of the horizontal misalignment can be ignored. Finally, an experimental platform is built to validate the above results of theoretical analysis and simulation.
