Abstract Objective This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety, and feasibility of medical thoracoscopy combined with fibrinolytic therapy for the treatment of complicated parapneumonic effusions and empyema, with a focus on therapeutic outcomes and recovery duration. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving 108 patients treated at Zhongshan Hospital, Xiamen University, between January 2015 and May 2024. Patients were categorized into two groups: the medical thoracoscopy group (n = 33) and the traditional treatment group (n = 75). The thoracoscopy group underwent thoracoscopic adhesiolysis and loculation breakdown, followed by intrapleural urokinase administration. The traditional treatment group received pleural catheter drainage combined with urokinase therapy. Primary outcomes included changes in inflammatory markers (white blood cell count, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin), imaging outcomes (resolution of pleural effusion, pulmonary inflammation, and the incidence of pleural thickening at three months), pulmonary function assessed by forced vital capacity (FVC), and in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes encompassed the duration of postoperative fever, drainage time, intravenous antibiotic use, complication rates, initial treatment failure, length of hospital stay, and hospitalization costs. Results Both groups demonstrated significant reductions in inflammatory markers post-treatment (P 0.05). Improvements in FVC were observed in both groups, with significantly greater gains in the thoracoscopy group (P 0.05). Conclusions Medical thoracoscopy combined with fibrinolytic therapy offers significant advantages in the management of complicated parapneumonic effusions and empyema. This approach effectively enhances inflammation control, improves pulmonary function, and accelerates recovery time without compromising safety or increasing costs, underscoring its potential for broader clinical application.

Abstract Background Glioma is a brain tumor and glioblastoma represents its most common type, accounting for almost 40% of primary tumors of the central nervous system, and is associated with the worst prognosis. Glioblastoma remains one of the major challenges in neurooncology. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved tumor treating fields (TTF) for the treatment of glioblastoma. In this analysis, we aimed to systematically assess the adverse outcomes associated with TTF when combined to temozolamide versus temozolamide alone for the treatment of glioblastoma. Methods MEDLINE (subset PubMed), EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane databases, Google scholar, and http://www.ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for publications comparing TTF in combination with temozolomide versus temozolomide alone for the treatment of glioblastoma. The adverse outcomes were considered as the endpoints in this analysis. The statistical analysis was carried out by the latest version of the RevMan software (version 5.4). Risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to represent the data following assessment. A random effect model was used during the statistical analysis. Results A total number of 994 participants were included in this analysis whereby 572 participants were assigned to TTF + temozolomide, whereas 422 participants were assigned to temozolomide alone. All the studies were randomized trials. The majority of the participants were males (68.0–75.0%) with a mean age of the varying from 54.0 to 69.0 years. Results of this analysis showed that TTF in combination with temozolomide was not associated with significantly higher adverse outcomes related to blood and lymphatic system disorders (RR:0.87, 95% CI 0.30–2.48; P = 0.79), gastrointestinal disorders (RR: 0.83, 95% CI 0.14–4.72; P = 0.83), general deterioration and malaise (RR: 1.43, 95% CI 0.90–2.25; P = 0.13), infections and infestations (RR: 1.21, 95% CI 0.33–4.45; P = 0.78), injury/poison and procedural complications (RR: 1.78, 95% CI 0.88–3.61; P = 0.11), metabolic and nutritional disorders (RR: 0.61, 95% CI 0.34–1.08; P = 0.09), central nervous system disorders (RR: 1.14, 95% CI 0.89–1.46; P = 0.31), musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders (RR: 0.99, 95% CI 0.48–2.07; P = 0.99), respiratory/thoracic/mediastinal disorders (RR: 0.85, 95% CI 0.44–1.62; P = 0.62), and psychiatric disorders (RR: 1.27, 95% CI 0.42–3.79; P = 0.67). Similar adverse effects were observed. Conclusion TTF in combination with temozolomide was not associated with significantly worse adverse outcomes for the treatment of patients with glioblastoma. Hence, future trials should focus on the cost-effectiveness of TTF for the treatment of glioblastoma.

Abstract Background A key challenge in the medical field is managing gallbladder polyps (GBP) > 10 mm, especially when their nature is uncertain. GBP with a diameter exceeding 10 mm are associated with an increased risk of gallbladder cancer, making the key to their management the differentiation between benign and malignant types. The current practice, due to the inability to predict accurately, leads to excessive surgeries and ineffective follow-ups, increasing patient risks and medical burdens. Purpose This study aims to establish an imaging radiomics model using clinical data and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to predict neoplastic GBP exceeding 10 mm in diameter preoperatively. Materials and methods Data from 119 patients with GBP > 10 mm of unknown origin were analyzed. A total of 1197 features were extracted from the GBP area using conventional ultrasound (US) and CEUS. Significant features were identified using the Mann–Whitney U test and further refined with a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model to construct radiomic features. By integrating clinical characteristics, a radiomics nomogram was developed. The diagnostic efficacy of the preoperative logistic regression (LR) model was validated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration plots, and the Hosmer–Lemeshow test. CEUS is an examination based on conventional ultrasound, and conventional two-dimensional ultrasound still poses significant challenges in differential diagnosis. CEUS has a high accuracy rate in diagnosing the benign or malignant nature of gallbladder space-occupying lesions, which can significantly reduce the preoperative waiting time for related examinations and provide more reliable diagnostic information for clinical practice. Results Feature selection via Lasso led to a final LR model incorporating high-density lipoprotein, smoking status, basal width, and Rad_Signature. This model, derived from machine learning frameworks including Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) with fivefold cross-validation, showed AUCs of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.90–0.99) and 0.87 (95% CI: 0.72–1.0) in internal validation. The model exhibited excellent calibration, confirmed by calibration graphs and the Hosmer–Lemeshow test (P = 0.551 and 0.544). Conclusion The LR model accurately predicts neoplastic GBP > 10 mm preoperatively. Radiomics with CEUS is a powerful tool for analysis of GBP > 10 mm. The model not only improves diagnostic accuracy and reduces healthcare costs but also optimizes patient management through personalized treatment plans, enhancing clinical outcomes and ensuring resources are more precisely allocated to patients who need surgery.

Abstract RNA degradation using ribonuclease targeting chimeras (RiboTACs) is a promising approach for cancer therapy. However, potential off-target degradation is a serious issue. Here, a RiboTAC is designed for tumor microenvironment triggered activation. The tumor microenvironment activated RiboTAC (TaRiboTAC) incorporates two pre-miR-21 binders, a near-infrared fluorophore IR780, an RGD targeting peptide and a phenylboronic acid caged ribonuclease recruiter. The caged ribonuclease recruiter is embedded in the molecule and exposed in acidic pH, the phenylboronic acid cage is removed by H2O2 making the TaRiboTAC responsive to the acidic and high H2O2 levels in the tumor microenvironment. It is shown the TaRiboTAC targets tumor tissue and degrades pre-miR-21. The degradation of pre-miR-21 by TaRiboTACs significantly increases the radiotherapeutic susceptibility of cancer cells achieving efficient suppression of human lung adenocarcinoma A549 tumors in living mice.

Through-wall human pose reconstruction and behavior recognition have enormous potential in fields like intelligent security and virtual reality. However, existing methods for through-wall human sensing often fail to adequately model four-Dimensional (4D) spatiotemporal features and overlook the influence of walls on signal quality. To address these issues, this study proposes an innovative architecture for through-wall human sensing using a 4D imaging radar. The core of this approach is the ST2W-AP fusion network, which is designed using a stepwise spatiotemporal separation strategy. This network overcomes the limitations of mainstream deep learning libraries that currently lack 4D convolution capabilities, which hinders the effective use of multiframe three-Dimensional (3D) voxel spatiotemporal domain information. By preserving 3D spatial information and using long-sequence temporal information, the proposed ST2W-AP network considerably enhances the pose estimation and behavior recognition performance. Additionally, to address the influence of walls on signal quality, this paper introduces a deep echo domain compensator that leverages the powerful fitting performance and parallel output characteristics of deep learning, thereby reducing the computational overhead of traditional wall compensation methods. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that compared with the best existing methods, the ST2W-AP network reduces the average joint position error by 33.57% and improves the F1 score for behavior recognition by 0.51%.

Human pose estimation holds tremendous potential in fields such as human-computer interaction, motion capture, and virtual reality, making it a focus in human perception research. However, optical image-based pose estimation methods are often limited by lighting conditions and privacy concerns. Therefore, the use of wireless signals that can operate under various lighting conditions and obstructions while ensuring privacy is gaining increasing attention for human pose estimation. Wireless signal-based pose estimation technologies can be categorized into high-frequency and low-frequency methods. These methods differ in their hardware systems, signal characteristics, noise processing, and deep learning algorithm design based on the signal frequency used. This paper highlights research advancements and notable works in human pose reconstruction using millimeter-wave radar, through-wall radar, and WiFi. It analyzes the advantages and limitations of each signal type and explores potential research challenges and future developments in the field.

Since 2010, the utilization of commercial WiFi devices for contact-free respiration monitoring has garnered significant attention. However, existing WiFi-based respiration detection methods are susceptible to constraints imposed by hardware limitations and require the person to directly face the WiFi device. Specifically, signal reflection from the thoracic cavity diminishes when the body is oriented sideways or with the back toward the device, leading to complexities in respiratory monitoring. To mitigate these hardware-associated limitations and enhance robustness, we leveraged the signal-amplifying potential of Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) to establish a high-precision respiration detection system. This system capitalizes on IRS technology to manipulate signal propagation within the environment to enhance signal reflection from the body, finally achieving posture-resilient respiratory monitoring. Furthermore, the system can be easily deployed without the prior knowledge of antenna placement or environmental intricacies. Compared with conventional techniques, our experimental results validate that this system markedly enhances respiratory monitoring across various postural configurations in indoor environments.

Elevated glucose metabolism is a prominent characteristic of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the efficacy of inhibiting a single target of glucose metabolism in FLS using small molecular inhibitors is limited for RA treatment. Herein, the synergistic inhibition of FLS’ survival, proliferation, and activation by combining two glucose metabolism inhibitors, diclofenac (DC) and lonidamine (LND) was first verified. Subsequently, DC and LND were individually conjugated to cystamine-modified hyaluronic acid (HA) to prepare two polymer-prodrug conjugates. A HAP-1 peptide-modified dual polymer-prodrug conjugates-assembled nanoparticles system (HAP−1NPDC+LND) was further tailored in the optimal synergistic ratio for targeted and synergistic metabolic modulation of FLS to alleviate RA symptoms. Upon targeted uptake by FLS in inflamed joints, HAP−1NPDC+LND released DC and LND within the intracellular reductive microenvironment, where DC hinders glucose uptake and LND suppresses glycolytic enzymes to eliminate FLS synergistically. Additionally, the secretion of lactic acid and pro-inflammatory factors from FLS were reduced, thereby disrupting the crosstalk between FLS and pro-inflammatory macrophages. Finally, HAP−1NPDC+LND demonstrated promising efficacy in a mouse model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). Overall, this research provides valuable insights into novel therapeutic strategies for the safe and effective of treatment RA through targeted and synergistic metabolic modulation of FLS.

In order to obtain a more protective phosphate conversion coating with a denser architecture, the nucleation kinetics of phosphate chemical conversion coating on Mg-Gd-Y-Zr magnesium alloy was tuned in this work. A pretreatment process was proposed and organic additives were incorporated, which aims at increasing the ionic produce (Jsp) at the interface for increasing σ, and decreasing the critical ionic product (JC,sp), respectively. Results prove that the pretreatment of bare alloys in a phosphate bath could increase the ion products of MgHPO4 / MnHPO4. The addition of benzalkonium chloride could neutralize the charges of crystals, and in turn promote the nucleation kinetics. A denser and more protective conversion coating could consequently be obtained.

Purpose: Assessing fluid responsiveness relying on central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) yields varied outcomes across several studies. This study aimed to determine the ability of the change in ScvO2 (ΔScvO2) to detect fluid responsiveness in ventilated septic shock patients and potential influencing factors. Methods: In this prospective, single-center study, all patients conducted from February 2023 to January 2024 received fluid challenge. Oxygen consumption was measured by indirect calorimetry, and fluid responsiveness was defined as an increase in cardiac index (CI) ≥ 10% measured by transthoracic echocardiography. Multivariate linear regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of oxygen consumption, arterial oxygen saturation, CI, and hemoglobin on ScvO2 and its change before and after fluid challenge. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used for the normality of continuous data. Data comparison between fluid responders and non-responders was conducted using a two-tailed Student t-test, Mann Whitney U test, and Chi-square test. Paired t-tests were used for normally distributed data, while the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for skewed data, to compare data before and after fluid challenge. Results: Among 49 patients (31 men, aged (59 ± 18) years), 27 were responders. The patients had an acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score of 24 ± 8, a sequential organ failure assessment score of 11 ± 4, and a blood lactate level of (3.2 ± 3.1) mmol/L at enrollment. After the fluid challenge, the ΔScvO2 (mmHg) in the responders was greater than that in the non-responders (4 ± 6 vs. 1 ± 3, p = 0.019). Multivariate linear regression analysis suggested that CI was the only independent influencing factor of ScvO2, with R2 = 0.063, p = 0.008. Abstract Accurate and rapid segmentation of key parts of frozen tuna, along with precise pose estimation, is crucial for automated processing. However, challenges such as size differences and indistinct features of tuna parts, as well as the complexity of determining fish poses in multi-fish scenarios, hinder this process. To address these issues, this paper introduces TunaVision, a vision model based on YOLOv8 designed for automated tuna processing. TunaVision incorporates enhancements in instance segmentation through YOLOv8m-FusionSeg, improving the segmentation of small and complex targets by increasing channel depth and optimizing feature fusion. Additionally, the YOLOv8s RSF model improves feature extraction speed and accuracy, ensuring each fish is correctly identified and localized before segmentation and pose estimation. Furthermore, TunaVision employs a vector-based approach for pose estimation, utilizing detection and segmentation results to determine fish posture and orientation. Experiments show that YOLOv8m-FusionSeg achieves an mAP@0.5 of 93.3%, while YOLOv8s RSF achieves an mAP@0.5 of 96.1%, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.81 degrees in angle estimation, significantly outperforming other methods. These findings highlight TunaVision’s effectiveness in segmenting, detecting, and estimating poses of frozen tuna, offering valuable insights for the development of automated processing systems.

Abstract Background Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant risk factor for cervical cancer. HPV typing and cytology are conducted in women of appropriate age to assess the risk of cervical lesions and to guide the need for further diagnostic procedures such as colposcopy, cervical biopsy, or treatment. This article explores methods to predict the risks of high-grade precancerous cervical lesions based on high-risk HPV typing. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of HPV typing data from 158,565 women, including 19,707 who underwent ThinPrep cytologic testing (TCT), 7,539 who had colposcopy examinations, and 4,762 who had biopsies. We evaluated the sensitivity, specificity, and risk parameters of high-grade lesions associated with high-risk HPV types. Results (1) The overall prevalence of HPV infection was 17.89%, with the most prevalent types being HPV52 (4.44%), HPV58 (2.10%), HPV53 (1.96%), HPV81 (1.85%), HPV42 (1.75%), and HPV16 (1.44%). (2) The sensitivity and specificity of detecting high-grade lesions in TCT, colposcopy, and biopsy, based on high-risk HPV typing, demonstrated a strong linear correlation with the infection rate of each type. (3) HPV16 was confirmed to have a higher risk of CIN2 + in biopsies using a self-defined risk parameter. (4) The top five HPV types with the highest PPVs and pathogenicity risks in biopsies were HPV45, HPV16, HPV58, HPV33, and HPV18. Conclusion In Changsha, China, HPV52, HPV58, and HPV53 were the most prevalent and contributed significantly to high-grade lesions. After adjusting for infection rates, a self-defined risk parameter was proposed as a measure of the intrinsic risks of high-grade lesions associated with high-risk HPV types. Focused monitoring of prevalent high-risk HPV types such as HPV45, HPV16, HPV58, HPV33, and HPV18, which show the highest pathogenicity risks, is recommended in our region.

Abstract Pyroptosis, a recently identified cellular demise regulated by gasdermin family proteins, is emerging as a promising avenue in cancer immunotherapy. However, the realm of light-controlled pyroptosis in cancer cells remains largely unexplored. In this study, we took a deliberate approach devoid of any chemical alterations to develop a novel photosensitizer called “pharmaceutical-dots (pharm-dots)” by combining nonemissive polymers (Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid), PLGA) with nonfluorescent invisible molecules like curcumin, berberine, oridonin into PLGA nanoparticles (PLGA-NPs). Initially, our research commenced with a comprehensive mechanistic comparison study, consolidating fragmented information on optical mechanisms. This exploration revealed that surface passivation atoms play a dominant role in governing the fluorescence emission of PLGA-NPs. Remarkably, these new luminophores, composed of two non-inherently luminous components, exhibit a remarkable synergistic boost in photoluminescence through a “0 + 0 > 2” phenomenon. In-depth investigations uncovered that these luminous PLGA-NPs, capable of generating 1O2, induce pyroptosis under photoexcitation conditions through the caspase-3/gasdermin E (GSDME) pathway. Simultaneously, our findings highlight PLGA-NPs as a novel optical formulation suitable for imaging, displaying substantial biological activity when paired with photoirradiation. This discovery holds the potential to facilitate the application of light-controlled pyroptosis in antitumor therapy, marking a promising stride toward innovative approaches in cancer treatment. Abstract The involvement of B lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is well-established, with their early and aberrant activation being a crucial factor. However, the mechanisms underlying this abnormal activation in RA remain incompletely understood. In this study, we identified a significant reduction in MAPK4 expression in both RA patients and collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse models, which correlates with disrupted B cell activation. Using MAPK4 knockout (KO) mice, we demonstrated that MAPK4 intrinsically promotes the differentiation of marginal zone (MZ) B cells. Loss of MAPK4 in KO mice enhances proximal BCR signaling and activates the PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway, leading to heightened B cell proliferation. Notably, B cells from MAPK4 KO mice produce significantly higher levels of IL-6, a key pro-inflammatory cytokine in RA. Furthermore, MAPK4 KO mice exhibit impaired T cell-independent humoral immune responses. Mechanistically, MAPK4 inhibits the activation of the PI3K signaling pathway in B cells by activating the IRF4-SHIP1 pathway. Treatment with the MAPK4 agonist Vacquinol-1 enhances MZ B cell differentiation in WT mice and reduces IL-6 secretion in CIA mouse models. In summary, this study reveals the diverse roles of MAPK4 in regulating of B cell functions, with potential implications for developing therapeutic strategies for RA and related autoimmune diseases.

Abstract Breast cancer survivors face employment challenges. How to promote BC’s return to work is important for improving their quality of life and promoting recovery. Numerous studies have reported that BC survivors encounter employment challenges due to cognitive limitations, alongside factors. healthcare Professional has a good educational background and a good cognitive level and is also the closest combination of sociocultural tradition and healthcare systems, however, there is a lack of studies on their experience as BC survivors. A descriptive qualitative study was conducted to investigate the experiences of healthcare professionals returning to work following breast cancer diagnosis. 20 doctors and nurses were interviewed face-to-face with a semi-structured interview guide in three municipal hospitals. Four major themes and corresponding sub-themes were extracted from the collected data as follows: (1) Return to Work: Willingness and Conflicts; (2) Cancer Progression Anxiety; (3) Physical and Mental Re-Awareness, including (1) Decreased Physical Ability, (2) Frustration and Diminished Self-Esteem; 4. Reflection and Re-planning, including (1) Past Self-Questioning, (2) Active Life Re-planning, (3) Revitalizing Life’s Value, and (4) Career Changes: Coping and Adapting. This study revealed a positive reintegration into the workforce among participants in China’s healthcare professionals with a notably advanced medical understanding. It implies that, for BC survivors, a combination of rich medical knowledge, a stable work environment, substantial income, and robust support from colleagues and superiors play a positive role in enhancing their adaptability post a breast cancer diagnosis. Additionally, interviewees expressed guilt during sick leave, it was suggested that hospitals implement comprehensive support mechanisms related to leave, acknowledging the imperative need for adequate rest during the treatment period.

Abstract Genome-scale metabolic models (GSMM) are commonly used to identify gene deletion sets that result in growth coupling and pairing product formation with substrate utilization and can improve strain performance beyond levels typically accessible using traditional strain engineering approaches. However, sustainable feedstocks pose a challenge due to incomplete high-resolution metabolic data for non-canonical carbon sources required to curate GSMM and identify implementable designs. Here we address a four-gene deletion design in the Pseudomonas putida KT2440 strain for the lignin-derived non-sugar carbon source, p-coumarate (p-CA), that proved challenging to implement. We examine the performance of the fully implemented design for p-coumarate to glutamine, a useful biomanufacturing intermediate. In this study glutamine is then converted to indigoidine, an alternative sustainable pigment and a model heterologous product that is commonly used to colorimetrically quantify glutamine concentration. Through proteomics, promoter-variation, and growth characterization of a fully implemented gene deletion design, we provide evidence that aromatic catabolism in the completed design is rate-limited by fumarase hydratase (FUM) enzyme activity in the citrate cycle and requires careful optimization of another fumarate hydratase protein (PP_0897) expression to achieve growth and production. A double sensitivity analysis also confirmed a strict requirement for fumarate hydratase activity in the strain where all genes in the growth coupling design have been implemented. Metabolic cross-feeding experiments were used to examine the impact of complete removal of the fumarase hydratase reaction and revealed an unanticipated nutrient requirement, suggesting additional functions for this enzyme. While a complete implementation of the design was achieved, this study highlights the challenge of completely inactivating metabolic reactions encoded by under-characterized proteins, especially in the context of multi-gene edits.

With advancements in science and technology, collaborative and industrial robotic arms are increasingly gaining popularity. Enhancing the intelligence and autonomy of robot arms, particularly in autonomous grasping, has become one of the research hotspots in robotics research. To improve the efficiency and success rate of industrial robot arms in grasping target objects and avoiding obstacles, a three-finger pneumatic flexible clamp was selected, and a flexible grasping module was designed. Communication between the upper computer and the single-chip computer via a serial port enables clamping and loosening actions, constructing an autonomous grasping system based on the traditional Informed -RRT* algorithm. An improved info-RRT * algorithm (Grasping informed-RRT *, GI-RRT*) for the GR-ConvNet model is proposed. First, the maximum number of iterations and the adaptive function are pre-set to shorten the generation time of the manipulator’s motion trajectory and enhance sampling guidance and quality. Second, direct sampling of elliptical subsets constrains the position of sampling points, improving sampling efficiency. Finally, a greedy algorithm deletes redundant path points, and a cubic B-spline curve smoothly constrains the trajectory of the robot arm, shortening its length and improving flexibility. The generated residual convolutional neural network (GR-ConvNet) model predicts inputs from color and depth images captured by a depth camera, outputting the appropriate mapping grab pose of the object in the field of view. To verify the grasping effect of the robot arm, simulation and grasping experiments were conducted on the cooperative robot arm FR3. Simulation results show that, compared with the traditional Informed-RRT* algorithm, the improved algorithm shortens trajectory length by 10.11% and reduces trajectory generation time by 62.68%. The robot arm independently avoids obstacles and grasps target objects, meeting the requirements for autonomous grasping. Experiments with the cooperative robot arm demonstrate its ability to independently grasp objects independently and successfully avoid obstacles. This further validates the algorithm’s effectiveness on a real robot arm, bringing hope for its further development and use. It reduces the difficulty for operators to use the robot arm and accelerates the wide application of domestic robot arms in factories. This paper aims to promote the practical application of robot arms.

Abstract Iron alloys, including steels and magnetic functional materials, are widely used in capital construction, manufacturing, electromagnetic technology, etc. However, they face the long-standing challenge of high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), limiting the applications in high-precision fields. This work proposes a strategy involving the in-situ formation of a nano-scale lamellar/labyrinthine negative thermal expansion (NTE) phase within the iron matrix to tackle this problem. For example, a model alloy, Fe-Zr10-Nb6, was synthesized and its CTE is reduced to approximately half of the iron matrix. Meanwhile, the alloy possesses a strength-plasticity combination of 1.5 GPa (compressive strength) and 17.5% (ultimate strain), which outperforms other low thermal expansion (LTE) metallic materials. The magnetovolume effect of the NTE phase is deemed to counteract the positive thermal expansion in iron. The high stress-carrying hard NTE phase and the tough matrix synergistically contribute to the high mechanical properties. The interaction between the slip of lamellar microstructure and the slip-hindering of labyrinthine microstructure further enhances the strength-plasticity combination. This work shows the promise of offering a method to produce LTE iron alloys with high mechanical properties.

Background Advanced triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is prone to brain metastasis (BrM). The precise molecular mechanism responsible for this phenomenon has not yet been completely established, so it is vital to comprehend the molecular mechanism behind it.Methods The protein chip analysis was conducted to identify any abnormal UBE2T protein expression in TNBC, especially BrM. Here, we used public databases and bioinformatics analysis as well as clinical samples from different cohorts to investigate the interrelationship between UBE2T/CDC42/CD276. This predicted relationship was then repeatedly validated using different in vivo and in vitro experimental methods. Additionally, multiple experimental approaches were implemented, encompassing western blotting, Co-IP, GST pull-down, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and qRT-PCR to reveal the molecular mechanism of UBE2T-mediated immune escape and BrM.Results Our results indicate that expressed at elevated levels in breast cancer, UBE2T is negatively linked to patient prognosis, especially in BrM of TNBC. Data from clinical samples from our different cohorts and TCGA indicate a significant correlation between UBE2T and immunosuppression. Mechanistically, UBE2T directly interacts with CDC42, promoting its K48-linked polyubiquitination and proteasomal degradation, thereby inhibiting CDC42 from degrading CD276 via the autophagy-lysosomal pathway, indirectly upregulating CD276 and thereby impairing the CD8+ T cells function, ultimately mediating tumor immune escape and BrM. Finally, animal experimental results also showed that inhibition of UBE2T elevated the TNBC sensitivity to immune checkpoint CD276 blockade and inhibited BrM of TNBC.Conclusions In conclusion, our results indicate a new mechanism whereby UBE2T-mediated ubiquitination positively controls the UBE2T/CDC42/CD276 axis to upregulate tumor cell expression of CD276 and thereby impair CD8+ T cells function, ultimately leading to tumor cell immune escape and BrM.

Lower intramuscular fat (IMF) and excessive abdominal fat reduce carcass quality in broilers. The study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary VD3 on growth performance, lipid metabolism and cecal microbiota in broilers over an 84-d feeding experiment. One-day-old male Luhua broilers (210) were randomly assigned to control (basal diet) and VD group (basal diet supplemented with 3,750 IU/kg VD3). Samples were collected after a 12-h fasted feeding on days 28, 56, and 84. Supplementary VD3 significantly enhanced average daily gain (ADG) in broilers aged 57-84 d and 1-84 d, and increased leg muscle rate and fat content in breast and leg muscles and reduced abdominal fat rate of broilers at 84 d. VD3 increased TG and glycogen content in the liver of 28- and 84-d-old broilers, serum TG and VLDL-C content at 56 and 84 d, and TC, HDL-C and LDL-C at 84 d. VD3 increased mRNA expressions of genes related to de novo lipogenesis (DNL) (mTOR, SREBP-1c, FAS and ACC), lipid oxidation (AMPK, PPARα, CPT-1α and ACO) and lipid transport (ApoB and MTTP), and FAS, ACC and CPT1 enzyme activities in the liver. However, mRNA levels of genes involved in DNL and cellular lipid uptake (LPL and FATP1) and LPL activity were decreased in abdominal adipose tissue, and that of genes involved in lipid oxidation and lipolysis (HSL and ATGL) was increased by VD3. LPL and FATP1 expression in breast and leg muscles was increased by VD3. Moreover, VD3 increased the abundance of cecum Bacteroides at 28 and 84 d, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and Faecalibacterium at 56 and 84 d, and Lachnoclostridium at 84 d. These bacteria were correlated with increased DNL, lipid oxidation and lipid transport in liver, and cellular lipid uptake in muscle, as well as decreased DNL and cellular lipid uptake, and increased lipid oxidation and lipolysis in abdominal adipose tissue. Altogether, supplementary VD3 in basal diet improved growth performance, increased IMF, and reduced abdominal fat rate, which is significant for enhancing feed utilization and improving the carcass quality of broilers. The regulation of VD3 on lipid metabolism could was associated with variation in cecal microbiota composition.

BackgroundHealth care is experiencing new opportunities in the emerging digital landscape. The metaverse, a shared virtual space, integrates technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, blockchain, and artificial intelligence. It allows users to interact with immersive digital worlds, connect with others, and explore unknowns. While the metaverse is gaining traction across various medical disciplines, its application in thyroid diseases remains unexplored. Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is the most common thyroid disorder during pregnancy and is frequently associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a metaverse platform in managing SCH during pregnancy. MethodsA randomized controlled trial was conducted at Fujian Provincial Hospital, China, from July 2022 to December 2023. A total of 60 pregnant women diagnosed with SCH were randomly assigned into two groups: the standard group (n=30) and the metaverse group (n=30). Both groups received levothyroxine sodium tablets. Additionally, participants in the metaverse group had access to the metaverse virtual medical consultations and metaverse-based medical games. The primary outcomes were adverse maternal and offspring outcomes, and the secondary outcomes included the neurobehavioral development of offspring and maternal psychological assessments. ResultsOf the 30 participants in each group, adverse maternal outcomes were observed in 43% (n=13) of the standard group and 37% (n=11) of the metaverse group (P=.60). The incidence of adverse offspring outcomes was 33% (n=10) in the standard group, compared to 7% (n=2) in the metaverse group (P=.01). The Gesell Development Scale did not show significant differences between the two groups. BackgroundAlthough advancements in treatment have resulted in improved overall outcomes for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer, the prognosis remains unfavorable for individuals with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The association between lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR) and clinical outcomes in mCRC patients is a subject of controversy. To systematically evaluate the correlation between LMR and prognostic factors in individuals with mCRC, we conducted this meta-analysis.MethodsThe databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched for all relevant studies from their inception until October 26, 2024. Study selection was conducted based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The primary outcomes of interest included prognosis measures such as overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Random-effects models or fixed-effects models were used to determine the pooled risk ratio (HR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) for each outcome indicator. Background: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a systemic metabolic disease with an imbalance of bone resorption and bone formation coupling as the basic pathogenesis. ZuoGui Wan (ZGW) can effectively ameliorate bone loss associated with decreased estrogen levels, the metabolic mechanisms and active ingredients involved remain unclear. Method: We evaluated the efficacy of ZGW on bone loss in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. The blood-entry components of ZGW were identified using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. The metabolic mechanisms of ZGW against PMOP were elucidated through metabolomics. Components highly correlated with differential metabolites were identified via correlation analysis. The metabolic mechanism of ZGW against PMOP was further confirmed by combining network pharmacology and metabolomics results and constructing an in vitro cell model for validation. Result: ZGW reversed OVX-induced bone loss by enhancing bone density and improving bone microstructural integrity. Initially, 14 prototype components were identified in the serum of OVX rats following ZGW intervention. Metabolomics analysis revealed 33 differential metabolites involved in pathways such as arginine biosynthesis, and the metabolism of arginine, proline, histidine, aspartate, and glutamate. Additionally, network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses further dissected the active ingredients of ZGW, constructing a ''Compound-Targets-Metabolic pathway-Metabolites'' network against PMOP. Conclusion: this study comprehensively revealed the metabolic mechanism and active ingredients of ZGW against PMOP for the first time, providing a new perspective on the study of the mechanism of ZGW against PMOP.

Oilseeds and edible oils are an indispensable part for the human diet and provide nutritional support for the human health. It has been reported a total of above 170 million tons per annum of edible oils consumption were consumed worldwide. Safety and quality of oilseeds and edible oils cannot be ignored, which can pose risk to human health and cause agro-economic loss. Classical techniques widely used to detect the safety and quality attributes of oilseeds and edible oils often involve time-consuming and tedious operation; therefore, the development of low cost, rapid and non-destructive detection method is necessary. This review presents applications of four emerging spectroscopic techniques in recent ten years, such as Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and near-infrared spectroscopy for determining the quality and safety of oilseeds and edible oils. Meanwhile, the technical challenges and future prospects of these non-destructive spectroscopic technologies are also discussed.

Nonlinear frequency conversion provides a powerful tool to generate and manipulate structured light at new wavelengths. In this work, to meet the demands of applications such as high-capacity optical communications and high-dimensional entanglement generation, we use ferroelectric domain engineering to generate frequency-doubled light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) superposition states and with adjustable radial intensity distribution. Angular and radial phase modulations were introduced into the modulation function of the second-order nonlinear coefficient distribution of lithium tantalate nonlinear photonic crystals, achieving simultaneous tailoring of the OAM spectrum and the radial intensity profile of the second harmonic (SH) waves. As a representative example, we demonstrate the generation of a SH wave that carries a comb-like OAM spectrum, with the radial intensity distribution concentrating on a ring with a specific radius. In addition, the nonlinear photonic devices developed in this work feature polarization insensitivity and broadband characteristics.

ABSTRACT Aims The objective of this study is to ascertain the suitability of haemoglobin as a screening factor for falls among obstetrics and gynaecology inpatients and to formulate a stratified scheme for assessing fall risk based on haemoglobin. Design A retrospective analysis and Delphi surveys were employed for this investigation. Methods Initially, a retrospective survey analysed falls among obstetrics and gynaecology inpatients in two hospitals from January 1, 2020, to July 10, 2022. Descriptive statistics, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, Youden index, sensitivity and specificity were utilised for data examination. The conclusions drawn were subsequently validated by Delphi surveys, featuring 21 experts participating in five rounds of consultation. The Kappa value and the coefficient of variation (CV) were employed to assess expert advice. Results The area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUC) of haemoglobin was 0.762 ± 0.030, 95% CI (0.703, 0.821). The highest Youden index was 0.425, with sensitivity at 0.705 and specificity at 0.720 when haemoglobin was 107.5 g/L. Two consensuses were reached by experts: anaemia was important in causing falls in obstetrics and gynaecology wards, and haemoglobin should be employed as a screening factor for falls. Based on the survey data of rural residents in the National Ecological Civilization Pilot Area (Jiangxi), this paper empirically analyzes the spillover effect and mechanism of past pro-environmental production behavior on rural residents’ voluntary garbage sorting behavior, and adopts the fsQCA to clarify the grouping paths and examines the interactive relationship among multiple factors. The results of the empirical study show that: firstly, past pro-environmental production behaviors can directly promote rural residents’ voluntary garbage sorting behaviors; secondly, environmental self-identification and subjective norms have a partially mediating effect; thirdly, publicity and village regulations play a positive moderating effect. Further, the results of fsQCA analysis reaffirm the influence mechanisms, and reveal the multiple concurrent pathways through which past pro-environmental production behaviors drive the active waste sorting behaviors of rural residents. It’s found that there is a substitution relationship between rural residents’ past pro-environmental production behavior and publicity and education. This study enriches the theoretical explanation of the spillover of residents’ pro-environmental behaviors, and provides useful ideas for stimulating rural residents’ enthusiasm in active participation of rural residents in household waste sorting.

PurposeThe persistent infection of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) is intricately linked to the onset and progression of cervical cancer. This research endeavored to develop a high-throughput 2D PCR method for closed-tube genotyping of 11 HR-HPVs.MethodsBase-quenched probes were specifically designed for FAM, VIC, and CY5 channels. The 2D PCR system underwent optimization, with its detection performance assessed in terms of specificity and sensitivity. Plasmid mixtures was used to simulate multiple infections of HPV, providing preliminary insights into the detection efficacy and throughput of the 2D PCR technology. Ultimately, the detection capability of this method was assessed using clinical samples.ResultsThe sequenced tags, when paired with primers, could generate Tm differences exceeding 3°C. These were then integrated with a fluorescent channel and Tm to differentiate and identify target genes upon detection. The refined 2D PCR system was confirmed to be free from cross-reactions and exhibited high specificity, capable of detecting 12 target genes within a single tube. A total of 294 cervical exfoliated cell samples were tested using 2D PCR and flow fluorescence hybridization method. The overall concordance between the two detection methods was 96.17% (Kappa = 0.910).ConclusionThe 2D PCR method, which integrates asymmetric PCR amplification with melting curve analysis, has the capacity to detect 11 types of HR-HPVs across three channels. This closed-tube detection approach offers several benefits including high throughput, straightforward operation, and low detection cost. Consequently, it can be effectively utilized for early screening and prevention of cervical cancer.

ABSTRACT Objective The study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of single‐stage versus multistage endovascular treatment in subarachnoid hemorrhage patients with Mirror Aneurysms. Materials and Methods Our research team performed a prospective study, focusing on the radiographic and clinical data of patients diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage, specifically those who presented with Mirror Aneurysms upon admission to our institutions. According to the different endovascular treatment stages, these patients were grouped into the multistage cohort and the single‐stage cohort. Result A total of 216 aneurysms were identified among the 108 patients, with every patient having one ruptured aneurysm. The duration of follow‐up was 2 years in both groups. In the single‐stage cohort, all 114 aneurysms in 57 patients were managed during a single session. During the 2‐year follow‐up, it was observed that 49 patients achieved a modified Rankin Scale score ≤2. Five complications were encountered, including cerebral vasospasm in three patients, cerebral hemorrhage in one patient, and thromboembolism in one patient. In the multistage cohort, only the ruptured aneurysm (amounting to 51 in total) received treatment at the initial occurrence, while the remaining 51 aneurysms were addressed subsequently. Throughout the 2‐year follow‐up period, 46 subjects exhibited a modified Rankin scale score ≤2. Overall, four complications were documented, including cerebral vasospasm in two patients, a subarachnoid hemorrhage in one patient, and thromboembolism in one patient. Conclusion The safety and effectiveness of both endovascular treatment groups have been verified for patients with Mirror Aneurysms suffering from subarachnoid hemorrhage. If feasible, single‐stage embolization should be considered a viable treatment option for these patients.

Abstract Mycophenolic acid (MPA) is commonly used to treat autoimmune diseases in children, and therapeutic drug monitoring is recommended to ensure adequate drug exposure. However, multiple blood sampling is required to calculate the area under the plasma concentration‐time curve (AUC), causing patient discomfort and waste of human and financial resources. This study aims to use machine learning and deep learning algorithms to develop a prediction model of MPA exposure for pediatric autoimmune diseases with optimizing sampling frequency. Pediatric autoimmune patients' data were collected at Nanfang Hospital between June 2018 and June 2023. Univariate analysis was applied for feature selection. Ten algorithms, including Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, Gradient Boosting Decision Tree, CatBoost, Artificial Neural Network, Grandient Boosting Machine, Transformer, Wide&Deep, and TabNet, were employed for modeling based on two, three, or four concentrations of MPA. A total of 614 MPA AUC0‐12h samples from 209 patients were enrolled. Among the 10 models evaluated, the Wide&Deep model exhibited the best predictive performance. The predictive performance of the Wide&Deep model using four and three blood concentration points was similar (R 2 ≈ 1 for four points; R 2 = 0.95 for three points). No significant difference in accuracy within ±30% was observed between models utilizing three and four blood concentration points (p = 0.06). This study demonstrates that in the Wide&Deep model, MPA exposure can be accurately estimated with three sampling points in children with autoimmune diseases. This model could help reduce discomfort in pediatric patients without reducing the accuracy of MPA exposure estimates in clinical practice.

Objectives: This study aimed to establish standard transesophageal echocardiographic (TEE) measurements of left ventricular (LV) morphology, function, and myocardial work parameters in healthy Beagle dogs using pressure-strain loops (PSL). Additionally, it sought to standardize optimal TEE imaging techniques and explore the potiential application of myocardial work analyis in veterinary medicine. Methods: Thirty-seven healthy male Beagle dogs were anesthetized, intubated, and mechanically ventilated for TEE examinations. LV systolic and diastolic function were evaluated, with simultaneous invasive femoral artery pressure measurements. Left ventricular global longitudinal strain (GLS), myocardial work parameters, PSL-derived metrics were analyzed. Results: The mean LV GLS was −16.0 ± 4.0 %, and the LV global myocardial work index (GWI) was 888 ± 298.6 mmHg∗%. Global Myocardial work efficiency (GWE) was 88 ± 3 %, while global myocardial wasted work (GWW) was 152 mmHg∗% (38–431 mmHg∗%). LV ejection fraction (LVEF) averaged 58.7 ± 4.4 %. Left ventricular end-diastolic (LVEDV) and end-systolic volume (LVESV) were 19.3 ± 5.2 ml and 8.0 ± 2.3 ml, respectively. Despite the availability of multiple treatment options for breast cancer, challenges such as adverse events, drug resistance, and disease progression persist for patients. The identification of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) as an oncogenic driver in a subset of breast cancers, alongside the development of HER2-targeted therapies, has significantly improved the prognosis of HER2-amplified breast cancers. However, therapeutic options remain limited for HER2-overexpressing or HER2-negative breast cancers. In response to this gap, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have emerged as a promising approach. ADCs combine the specificity of monoclonal antibodies with the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy, which allows for the targeted delivery of a cytotoxic payload to cancer cells. ADCs have been used as adjuvant chemotherapeutic treatments and salvage therapies across various breast cancer subtypes, which have greatly improved the prognosis of breast cancer patients. Numerous ongoing clinical trials seek to optimize dosing strategies and identify patient populations that would benefit most from ADCs. This review presents an updated and comprehensive overview of emerging investigational ADCs for treating breast cancer patients with various HER2 subtypes. These ADCs are spearheading a new era in targeted cancer therapy, promising to innovate treatment paradigms for both HER2-positive and HER2-low breast cancers.

Abstract Aqueous zinc‐iodine (Zn‐I2) batteries are promising energy storage devices; however, the conventional single‐electron reaction potential and energy density of iodine cathode are inadequate for practical applications. Activation of high‐valence iodine cathode reactions has evoked a compelling direction to developing high‐voltage zinc‐iodine batteries. Herein, ethylene glycol (EG) is proposed as a co‐solvent in a water‐in‐deep eutectic solvent (WiDES) electrolyte, enabling significant utilization of two‐electron‐transfer I+/I0/I− reactions and facilitating an additional reversibility of Cl0/Cl− redox reaction. Spectroscopic characterizations and calculations analyses reveal that EG integrates into the Zn2+ solvation structure as a hydrogen‐bond donor, competitively binding O atoms in H2O, which triggers a transition from water‐rich to water‐poor clusters of Zn2+, effectively disrupting the H2O hydrogen‐bond network. Consequently, the aqueous Zn‐I2 cell achieves an exceptional capacity of 987 mAh gI2−1 with an energy density of 1278 Wh kgI2−1, marking an enhancement of ≈300 mAh g−1 compared to electrolyte devoid of EG, and enhancing the Coulombic efficiency (CE) from 68.2% to 98.7%. Moreover, the pouch cell exhibits 3.72 mAh cm−2 capacity with an energy density of 4.52 mWh cm−2, exhibiting robust cycling stability. Overall, this work contributes to the further development of high‐valence and high‐capacity aqueous Zn‐I2 batteries.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, self-limiting condition typically characterized by fever and lymphadenopathy. The exact etiology remains unclear but is suspected to be associated with viral infections and autoimmune responses. This report presents the case of a 32-year-old Chinese male who was admitted with recurrent high fever, lymphadenopathy, and hepatosplenomegaly. Initial treatment was ineffective, and a lymph node biopsy subsequently confirmed the diagnosis of KFD, with evidence of cytomegalovirus infection. Following treatment with corticosteroids, the patient’s symptoms improved rapidly, and no relapse was observed during follow-up after discharge. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges of KFD, particularly in distinguishing it from lymphoma and systemic lupus erythematosus. Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial to avoid unnecessary treatments, and long-term follow-up is recommended to monitor for potential disease progression.

In order to avoid damaging viscera during poultry evisceration and enhance the economic value of poultry products, this paper proposes a predictive method for poultry carcass visceral dimensions based on 3D point cloud and a Genetic Algorithm-based Wavelet Neural Network (GA-WNN). In this study, a data set of poultry carcasses was obtained through the use of 3D point cloud scanning equipment combined with reverse engineering software. The inputs and predicted targets of the model were determined through correlation analysis of various carcass dimensions. Then, a prediction model of poultry visceral size (GA-WNN) was built by K-fold cross validation method, Genetic Algorithm and Wavelet Neural Network (WNN). By comparing the prediction results and analyzing Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of the six models, it was determined that the GA-WNN model had the best prediction results. Finally, in order to verify the generalizability of the method, generalizability experiments were conducted on different breeds of poultry, which proved that the method of this study had superior generalizability ability. In the comparative analysis of the six models, the MAPE and RMSE of the GA-WNN model for the prediction of the three visceral dimensions were the lowest except for the RMSE for the prediction of visceral length. Compared with the largest of the two kinds of errors, the MAPE and RMSE for the prediction of the position of the upper end of the left liver by the method of this study were lower by 5.56% and 0.915 cm, respectively, and the prediction effect had a significant advantage. The experimental results showed that the model built in this paper based on 3D point cloud and GA-WNN network can accurately predict the size of the viscera of poultry carcasses, thus providing theoretical references for the automated evisceration technology without damaging the viscera.

Polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs) and Cadmium (Cd) are widely occurring water pollutants that interact with each other to exert toxic effects. As a waterfowl, Muscovy duck is more susceptible to PVC-MPs and Cd than land poultry. In this study, Muscovy duck was used as a research model, and 10 mg/L PVC-MPs and 50 mg/kg Cd were used alone and in combine to explore the effect on the kidney of Muscovy duck. We found that treatment of Cd or PVC-MPs alone changed the kidney weight, increased creatinine and urea nitrogen content, and disrupted oxidative balance and macro/trace element metabolism, while the combination of PVC-MPs+Cd reduced the accumulation of Cd in the kidney. In addition, treatment of Cd and PVC-MPs alone caused mitochondrial damage, increase or decrease of mitochondria-associated proteins (Fis1, Drp1, PGC-1α, Nrf1), and Nrf2 signaling pathway plays a key role in detoxification and alleviation of oxidative stress, and we found that PVC-MPs+Cd treatment recovered related proteins (Nrf2, Keap-1, HO-1, NQO1, AC-SOD2, SOD2) compared with the Cd and PVC-MPs alone treatment. Finally, we detected changes in apoptosis-related proteins and genes (Caspase-3, Caspase-9, Bax, Bcl-2, Cytc) and TUNEL staining, and after PVC-MPs+Cd treatment, apoptosis-related proteins/genes recovered and the apoptosis rate decreased compared with the Cd and PVC-MPs alone treatment. These results indicate that renal function is impaired, oxidative stress and trace element metabolism disorder, nuclear factor-E2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) is activated into the nucleus to induce the expression of related antioxidant proteins (such as HO-1, NQO1). These injuries can induce mitochondrial damage and eventually lead to renal cell apoptosis. To sum up, these evidence show that Cd or PVC-MPs can induce kidney oxidative damage, trace element metabolism disorder, mitochondrial damage and apoptosis.

Background and aims: Previous studies are limited in addressing the directionality of temporal relationships between problematic gaming and phubbing symptoms by exploring cross-sectional studies. Therefore, we estimated the longitudinal relationships between individual behavioral addictive symptoms including problematic gaming and phubbing in adolescence, and explored potential sex differences in these relationships. Methods: This study included 3296 participants in Shandong Province, China. Data were collected from November 2021 (mean [SD] age: 15.17 [1.44] years) to May 2023 (mean [SD] age: 17.50 [1.18] years), with females comprising 54.5 % of the sample. Problematic gaming and phubbing were assessed using validated scales at each wave. We construct cross-sectional networks and cross-lagged panel networks (CLPN) to explore the contemptuous and temporal relationships between problematic gaming and phubbing. Results: Contemporaneous networks revealed significant differences in problematic gaming and phubbing networks between males and females. Additionally, temporal network analyses indicated that among male adolescents, feeling anxious when unable to play games was the most influential predictor of subsequent behavioral addictive symptoms. For female adolescents, fantasizing about gaming had the most significant associations with future addictive behaviors. The strongest bridge symptom linking problematic gaming and phubbing for both sexes was focusing on phones rather than engaging in conversation. Discussion and conclusions: The study applied network modeling to panel data from a large, population-based cohort of adolescents, identifying unique longitudinal relationships between problematic gaming and phubbing across symptom domains. It provides valuable insights into the characterization of behavioral addictive symptoms among adolescents and the potential predictive relationships among these symptoms among different sexes, guiding sex-specific targeted interventions for adolescents.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating chronic joint disease affecting large populations of patients, especially the elderly. The pathological mechanisms of OA are currently unknown. Multiple risk factors are involved in OA development. Among these risk factors, alterations of mechanical loading in the joint leading to changes in biological signaling pathways have been known as a key event in OA development. The importance of AMPK-β-catenin-Runx2 signaling in the initiation and progression of OA has been recognized in recent years. In this review, we discuss the recent progress in understanding the role of this signaling pathway and the underlying interaction mechanisms during OA development. We also discuss the drug development aiming to target this signaling pathway for OA treatment.

Long-term geographic isolation and breeding programs both influence population characteristics. Leiqiong cattle, a native breed from the southernmost region of China, are renowned for disease and heat resistance, with two subgroups on Hainan Island and the Leizhou Peninsula. However, the genomic differences between them remain unexplored. In this study, we conducted genomic comparisons using whole-genome sequencing data from the two subgroups of Leiqiong cattle and three commercial breeds to assess their population structures. Leiqiong cattle in Hainan exhibited lower genetic diversity and a pure ancestral content due to their isolation from the mainland. In contrast, the subgroup in Guangdong displayed higher genetic diversity and mixed ancestry, influenced by the intrusion of commercial breeds. The genetic divergence between them was evaluated by estimating a genetic distance of 0.08 and a split time of 3400 to 4250 years ago, highlighting the role of geographical barriers in speciation. Notably, two candidate genes were identified through selection sweeps, including PIP4K2A, potentially related to immunity, and TNFSF4, possibly involved in hair follicle development. Our findings reveal the different genetic structures and genomic characteristics in the two subgroups of Leiqiong cattle, providing valuable insights into their evolutionary history and establishing a foundation for future breeding strategies.

Accurate wind power forecasting is crucial for optimizing grid scheduling and improving wind power utilization. However, real-world wind power time series exhibit dynamic statistical properties, such as changing mean and variance over time, which make it difficult for models to apply observed patterns from the past to the future. Additionally, the execution speed and high computational resource demands of complex prediction models make them difficult to deploy on edge computing nodes such as wind farms. To address these issues, this paper explores the potential of linear models for wind power forecasting and constructs NFLM, a linear, lightweight, short-term wind power forecasting model that is more adapted to the characteristics of wind power data. The model captures both short-term and long-term sequence variations through continuous and interval sampling. To mitigate the interference of dynamic features, we propose a normalization feature learning block (NFLBlock) as the core component of NFLM for processing sequences. This module normalizes input data and uses a stacked multilayer perceptron to extract cross-temporal and cross-dimensional dependencies. Experiments with data from two real wind farms in Guangxi, China, showed that compared with other advanced wind power forecasting methods, the MSE of NFLM in the 24-step ahead forecasting of the two wind farms is respectively reduced by 23.88% and 21.03%, and the floating-point operations (FLOPs) and parameter count only require 36.366 M and 0.59 M, respectively. The results show that NFLM can achieve good prediction accuracy with fewer computing resources.

The treatment of black tea fermentation with different exogenous tannases was investigated, and processing parameters during black tea fermentation, including fermentation time, fermentation temperature, and exoenzyme amounts, were optimized, while the consumption and transformation pathways of catechins were analyzed. The results showed that tannase from Aspergillus niger was ultimately selected as the optimal enzyme to effectively increase the content of theaflavins by promoting the hydrolysis reaction and benzoylation reaction of catechins, resulting in a greater theaflavin (TF) content of 1.41%. The optimal processing conditions were found to be a fermentation time of 3 h, a fermentation temperature of 20 °C, and 1 g of tannase for 300 g of rolled tea leaves. Processing with the exogenous tannase could provide an ideal choice for the efficient utilization of summer and autumn fresh tea leaves, and could be used to develop summer and autumn black tea and to improve the content of theaflavins. It could also be used to develop deep processing of tea products with theaflavin extracts in the future.

Endophytic bacteria are an important source for developing antimicrobial substances. With the aim to find eco-friendly antimicrobial agents from natural sources, Streptomyces sp. R6 was isolated from Azadirachta indica. After that, a new spirotetronate natural product, lobophorin S (compound 2), together with lobophorin H8 (compound 1) and a known macrolide compound divergolide C (compound 3) were isolated from the cultural solution of strain R6. These compounds mark the first isolation of marine-derived microbial natural products known as lobophorins (LOBs) from endophytic bacteria. The structures of these three compounds were identified by extensive NMR and HRMS analyses. The antimicrobial activities of these three compounds against eight fungal and four bacterial phytopathogens were separately evaluated. Compound 1 demonstrated better antibacterial activity against Erwinia carotovora, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, and P. syringae pv. lachrymans with MIC values of 3.91, 7.81, and 15.63 μg/mL, respectively. Additionally, compounds 1–3 all showed antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea, with the MIC values of 1.95, 7.81, and 15.63 μg/mL, respectively. Notably, the in vivo antifungal effect of 1 against B. cinerea was up to 78.51 ± 3.80% at 1.95 µg/mL, significantly surpassing polyoxin B (70.70 ± 3.81%). These results highlight the potential of lobophorins as promising lead compounds for the development of new, sustainable agents to control plant diseases.

The spectral vegetation indices derived from remote sensing data provide a detailed spectral analysis for assessing vegetation characteristics. This study investigated the relationship between cotton yield and canopy spectral indices to develop yield estimation models. Spectral reflectance data were collected at various growth stages using an ASD FieldSpec Pro VNIR 2500 spectrometer. Six prediction models were developed using spectral vegetation indices, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI), to estimate the Leaf Area Index (LAI) and above-ground biomass. For LAI estimation using the NDVI, the power function model (y = 10.083x11.298) demonstrated higher precision, with a multiple correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.8184 and the smallest root mean square error (RMSE = 0.3613). These results confirm the strong predictive capacity of NDVI for LAI, with the power function model offering the best estimation accuracy. In estimating above-ground biomass using RVI, the power function model of y = 6.5218x1.33917 achieved the higher correlation (R2 = 0.8851) for fresh biomass with an RMSE of 0.1033, making it the most accurate. For dry biomass, the exponential function model (y = 9.1565 × 10−5∙exp(1.1146x)) was the most precise, achieving an R2 value of 0.8456 and the lowest RMSE value of 0.0076. These findings highlight the potential of spectral remote sensing for accurately predicting cotton canopy structural parameters and biomass weights. By integrating spectral analysis techniques with remote sensing, this research offers valuable insights for precision cotton planting and field management, enabling optimized agricultural practices and enhanced vegetation health monitoring.

Over the past decade, return freight insurance (RFI) and return pickup services (RPSs) have emerged as dominant return service strategies in e-commerce, particularly in China’s competitive online retail market. Despite their prominence, the strategic dynamics guiding e-sellers’ choice between these services remain underexplored. This study develops a game-theoretic model to analyze the equilibrium return strategies of two horizontally competing e-sellers with varying misfit probabilities. By examining four subgames, we identify the conditions under which e-sellers converge on either RFI or RPSs. Our findings revealed that highly similar or highly differentiated products typically favor RFI due to intense price competition or reduced need for service-based competition, while moderately differentiated products lead to RPS adoption as service quality becomes a key competitive lever. Additionally, competitive pressure often drives e-sellers to adopt homogenized return strategies, particularly RPSs, to maintain market position. The equilibrium outcomes are shaped by misfit probability differences, consumer hassle costs, and cost structures, offering actionable insights into optimizing return strategies in competitive e-commerce environments. These findings provide actionable insights into optimizing return service strategies in competitive e-commerce environments and contribute to the growing literature on return policies as a competitive lever in online retail markets.

ε-poly-l-lysine (ε-PL), a natural food preservative, has garnered widespread attention. It is mainly produced by Streptomyces albulus, but the production by wild-type strains fails to meet the demands of industrialization. To address this issue, adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) was successfully employed in this study, subjecting S. albulus CICC 11022 to environmental stresses such as acidic pH and antibiotics (rifampicin, gentamicin, and streptomycin). As a result of ALE, an evolutionary strain S. albulus C214 was obtained, exhibiting an increase in ε-PL production and cell growth by 153.23% and 234.51%, respectively, as compared with the original strain. Genomic and metabolic analyses revealed that mutations occurred in genes responsible for transcriptional regulation, transporter, cell envelope, energy metabolism, and secondary metabolite synthesis, as well as the enrichment of metabolites involved in the biosynthesis of ε-PL. These findings hold great significance for elucidating the mechanism underlying ε-PL synthesis.
