Background: Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a major contributor to cognitive decline and gait abnormalities in the elderly population. Understanding the relationship between these impairments can aid in early detection and intervention. This study investigated the association between gait performance and cognitive decline in patients with CSVD, focusing on specific gait parameters as potential clinical markers of cognitive impairment. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 95 elderly patients with confirmed atherosclerotic CSVD at Guangzhou Geriatric Hospital. Participants underwent comprehensive gait assessments using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Cognitive function was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Imaging markers, including total magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) CSVD burden and Fazekas scale score, were analyzed. Results: Participants with cognitive decline performed significantly worse on the TUG test, BBS, and SPPB, particularly on the SPPB sit-to-stand component. The total MRI CSVD burden and Fazekas scale scores were significantly higher in the cognitive decline group. Deep cerebral microbleeds and enlarged perivascular spaces in the basal ganglia were more prevalent in individuals with cognitive decline. The association between the SPPB sit-to-stand score and cognitive decline remained significant after adjusting for confounders (OR 0.44; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.21 to 0.94; p = 0.034). Conclusion: This study highlighted the significant relationship between gait performance and cognitive decline in elderly patients with CSVD. In particular, the sit-to-stand component emerged as a robust predictor of cognitive impairment, suggesting its potential as a valuable clinical marker for early detection. The incorporation of gait assessments into routine clinical evaluations can enhance early intervention efforts, improve patient outcomes, and inform healthcare policies. Cell proliferation and migration mediated by hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) are important processes of hypoxic cardiac vascular remodeling. HIF-1α also regulates the physiological hypoxic adaptation of the coronary artery in the yak heart, but the potential mechanism remains to be completely elucidated. In this study, coronary artery proliferation increased with age and hypoxia adaptation time. In vitro analysis showed that hypoxia can promote the proliferation of coronary vascular smooth muscle cells (CASMCs). Meanwhile, HIF-1α plays an important role in the regulation of proliferation and migration under hypoxia. Autophagy regulates cell proliferation and migration to participate in hypoxia adaptation in plateau animals. Here, the level of autophagy increased significantly in yak coronary arteries with age and was regulated by HIF-1α-mediated hypoxia. In addition, autophagy could also mediate the hypoxic effect on the proliferation and migration of CASMCs. In summary, the results revealed that the increase in yak heart coronary artery thickening with age increases vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration, mainly achieved through hypoxia-mediated HIF-1α-regulated autophagy. In order to further find compounds with antifungal activities, a series of Schiff bases containing cinnamaldehyde moieties were designed and synthesized by using the principle of active group splicing. All compounds were identified by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. The results of antifungal activity showed that the antifungal activities of 22 against 8 tested fungi were all more than 80 % at 50 μ g/mL, and the EC 50 value of 22 against P. oryza was 4.3 μ g/mL, which was only 12 % of the positive control thiabendazole. Scanning electron microscopy showed that compound 22 caused obvious damage to the mycelia of P. oryza. This study explored the wellbeing of four university-level teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) in China before, during, and after the implementation of a new curriculum. A particular focus was given to their emotion and its impact on their wellbeing. The data was collected over the course of one academic year through three rounds of in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The analysis revealed various factors influencing teacher wellbeing that dynamically fluctuated throughout the reform implementation. Overall, three archetypes of language teacher wellbeing emerged: (1) ambiguous wellbeing, (2) jeopardized wellbeing, and (3) self-actualized wellbeing. Based on the findings, we propose an action-based framework for language teacher wellbeing which highlights its fluctuating nature as teachers balance resources and constraints at both personal and situational levels. Recommendations are offered to stakeholders – including policymakers, educational administrators, teacher educators, and teachers – to better support language teacher wellbeing in the context of curriculum reform. • Wnt5a plays a negative regulatory role in melanogenesis in primary epidermal melanocytes. • Wnt5a is presumably involved in antagonizing or inhibiting canonical Wnt signaling. • Wnt5a is involved in the seasonal change of coat color of Arctic fox. Melanocytes, which are mainly found in the epidermis, are responsible for the melanin of skin and hair, and thereby contribute to the appearance of skin and provide protection from damage by ultraviolet radiation. Our previous study revealed that the Wnt5a , one of the many genes that affect melanin production, might be involved in the coat color seasonal change of the Arctic fox by influencing skin melanogenesis. Although the role of Wnt5a in melanocyte lines and melanoma cells has been extensively studied, its role in primary epidermal melanocytes has not been explored. This study aimed to investigate the role and mechanism of the Wnt5a in influencing melanogenesis in Arctic fox primary epidermal melanocytes. We constructed the Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) knockout plasmid targeting exons of the Wnt5a and transfected it into primary epidermal melanocytes. The results of the amplification knockout region assay, RT-qPCR assay, and western blot assay showed the success of Wnt5a knockout. RT-qPCR assay and melanin content assay showed that melanin production in melanocytes was significantly increased after Wnt5a knockout, and melanin-related key genes, such as microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein 1, were significantly elevated. In addition, we also found that the expression of the β-catenin gene of the Wnt canonical pathway was significantly elevated after Wnt5a knockout. In conclusion, our results indicate that the Wnt5a plays a negative regulatory role in melanogenesis in primary epidermal melanocytes, and is presumably involved in antagonizing or inhibiting canonical Wnt signaling. Background: This study evaluates the efficacy of gabexate mesylate thermosensitive in-situ gel (GMTI) in the treatment of beagle grade III pancreatic trauma (PT) with the assistance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and investigates its mechanism of action., Methods: A grade III PT model consisting of 15 beagle dogs with severed main pancreatic ducts was created and treated with cephalic vein injection of gabexate mesylate (GM) (1.54 mL/10 kg, TID) and peripancreatic injection of GMTI (4.63 mL/10 kg, QD) guided by CEUS within 24 h post-surgery. Ascites and serum levels of amylase (AMY), lipase (LPS), C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and urinary trypsinogen activating peptide (TAP) were detected by ELISA. Histopathological changes in the canine pancreas were observed by Hematoxylin and Eosin staining., Results: CEUS accurately displayed pancreatic lesions and guided catheterisation. Compared to the control group, the ascites was significantly reduced after treatment (p < 0.01). AMY and LPS ascites significantly decreased on post-operative 1st and 2nd day (p < 0.01). The levels of AMY, LPS, CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α in serum were decreased (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). Urinary TAP was decreased 1 and 2 days after treatment (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01, respectively). In the control group, pancreatic tissue necrosis was evident in the wound area. Normal glandular cell structures and fibrous tissue hyperplasia were observed in the wound area after GMTI treatment. The GMTI group performed better than the GM group in improving pancreatic histology and reducing AMY levels in the early post-operative period., Conclusion: Guided by CEUS, daily peripancreatic injections of GMTI in Beagles effectively inhibit pancreatic enzyme activity and aid in the adjuvant treatment of pancreatic trauma., (© 2025 The Author(s). The suboptimal ionic conductivity of commercial polyolefin separators exacerbates uncontrolled lithium dendrite formation, deteriorating lithium metal battery performance and posing safety hazards. To address this challenge, a novel organic-inorganic composite separator designed is prepared to enhance ion transport and effectively suppress dendrite growth. This separator features a thermally stable, highly porous poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) electrospun membrane, coated with ultralong hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires that promote "ion flow redistribution." The synergistic effects of the nitrogen atoms in PMIA and the hydroxyl groups in HAP hinder anion transport while facilitating efficient Li + conduction. Meanwhile, the optimized unilateral pore structure ensures uniform ion transport. These results show that the 19 µm-thick HAP/PMIA composite separator achieves remarkable ionic conductivity (0.68 mS cm -1 ) and a high lithium-ion transference number (0.51). Lithium symmetric cells using HAP/PMIA separators exhibit a lifespan exceeding 1000 h with low polarization, significantly outperforming commercial polypropylene separators. Background: The proportion and impact of minimal pleural effusion (PE) on prognosis remain blurred in operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who reported minimal PE on imaging., Methods: Clinical and prognostic data of operable NSCLC patients who presented no distant metastasis, no direct pleural invasion, but minimal PE on preoperative imaging were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into surgical (81 cases) and non-surgical (10 cases) cohorts. Potential or suspected malignant PE or pleural metastases were confirmed by surgery. The overall survival (OS) was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier curve and prognostic factors by multivariate Cox regression., Results: The surgical cohort reported no pleural invasion on preoperative imaging and no pleural metastases by postoperative pathology, with an overall median disease-free survival of 36.7 (28.6, 44.7) months and a median OS of 59.8 (45.7, 73.2) months, with the latter significantly longer in the surgical cohort than in the non-surgical cohort (59.8 months vs 20.37 months, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis indicated surgical treatment as an independent prognostic factor for OS., Conclusion: Malignant PE is rare in operable NSCLC patients who report the presence of minimal PE but no distant metastasis or direct pleural invasion on preoperative imaging.
