Abstract

To obtain sustainable food packaging materials, alternatives to traditional ones must be researched. In this work, two different kinds of zeolites, i.e., a natural one, Clinoptilolite, and a synthetic one, Zeolite Na-X, were mixed with thermoplastic polyurethane for the fabrication of composites. Composite films were prepared via a hot mixing stage and then by means of a hot compression molding process. Several TPU/zeolite composites were produced with a filler concentration ranging from 5% to 10%wt. Finally, the obtained films were characterized by Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (FT-IR, ATR), thermal analysis (TGA and DSC), frequency sweep test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical tensile test and oxygen permeability test. For both fillers and at all concentrations, the inclusion of zeolites significantly influenced the analyzed properties. In the TPU/zeolite composites, an overall enhancement was observed compared to the neat polymer, attributed to improved processability, superior barrier properties and the potential to create active materials by loading zeolite combined with various chemicals for specific applications. 2. TP53I11 Functions Downstream of Multiple MicroRNAs to Increase ER Calcium Levels and Inhibits Cancer Cell Proliferation.

Abstract

Cells meticulously regulate free calcium ion (Ca2+) concentrations, with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) being crucial for Ca2+ homeostasis. Disruptions in ER Ca2+ balance can contribute to various diseases, including cancer. Although considerable research has focused on the direct mechanisms of ER Ca2+ regulation, the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in this process remains underexplored. Mainly using data from a CRISPR-based genomic screening previously conducted in our laboratory, we identified 33 candidate miRNAs that may regulate ER Ca2+ levels. From these, 10 miRNAs were found to significantly lower basal ER Ca2+ levels. RNA sequencing analysis indicated that these miRNAs downregulate the tumor suppressor tumor protein p53 (TP53)-inducible protein 11 gene (TP53I11), which is a key regulator of ER Ca2+ levels. Functional assays confirmed that TP53I11 influences ER Ca2+ levels and affects cancer cell proliferation. Additionally, the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) was shown to upregulate TP53I11 and enhance ER Ca2+ accumulation. These findings elucidate the central role of TP53I11 in miRNA-mediated regulation of ER Ca2+ homeostasis and suggest potential therapeutic strategies targeting ER Ca2+ upregulation for cancer intervention. Abstract

The book reviews the fundamentals of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) technologies to degrade hazardous organics via photocatalysis of 1-dimensional zinc-oxide (ZnO). One-dimensional ZnO nanorods (ZnO-NRs) have been of utmost interest due to their high surface area, efficient charge transport, and superior photosensitivity. These features make ZnO-based nanorods exciting candidates for applications in photocatalysis. Even though photocatalysis using bare ZnO nanorods is useful in pollutant remediation, several drawbacks such as high recombination of photo−excited charge carriers and ineffective operation of sunlight make it less effective. This book thus presents a review of the current modification strategies carried out to increase the ZnO nanorods photoactivity, such as enhancing the photocatalytic activity of ZnO through modification of its electronic and optical properties, doping metal/nonmetal atoms, depositing noble metals, constructing heterojunctions, and coupling carbon materials. This book provides invaluable insights for researchers, engineers, and policymakers seeking sustainable solutions for pollutant degradation.
