Background: Cognitive impairment (CoI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and depression are prevalent among older adults and are interrelated, imposing a significant disease burden. This study evaluates the association of CKD and depression with CoI and explores their potential interactions. Method: Data for this study were sourced from the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES). Multiple binary logistic regression models assessed the relationship between CKD, depression, and CoI while controlling for confounders. The interactions were measured using the relative excess risk of interaction (RERI), the attributable proportion of interaction (AP), and the synergy index (S). Results: A total of 2,666 participants (weighted n = 49,251,515) were included in the study, of which 700 (16.00%) had CoI. After adjusting for confounding factors, the risk of CoI was higher in patients with CKD compared to non-CKD participants (odds ratio [OR] = 1.49, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.12–1.99). The risk of CoI was significantly increased in patients with depression compared to those without (OR = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.73–3.03). Furthermore, there was a significant additive interaction between CKD and depression in terms of the increased risk of CoI (adjusted RERI = 2.01, [95% CI: 0.31–3.71], adjusted AP = 0.50 [95% CI: 0.25–0.75], adjusted S = 2.97 [95% CI: 1.27–6.92]). Conclusion: CKD and depression synergistically affect CoI, particularly when moderate-to-severe depression co-occurs with CKD. Clinicians should be mindful of the combined impact on patients with CoI. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and assess the effects specific to different CKD stages. The soil selenium (Se) content and bioavailability are important for human health. In this regard, knowing the factors driving the concentration of total Se and bioavailable Se in soils is essential to map Se, enhance foodstuffs' Se content, and improve the Se nutritional status of humans. In this study, total Se and Se bioavailability (i.e., phosphate extracted Se) in surface soils (0–20 cm) developed on different strata were analyzed in a Se-enriched region of Southwest China. Furthermore, the interaction between the stratum and soil properties was assessed and how did the stratum effect on the concentration and spatial distribution of Se bioavailability in soils was investigated. Results showed that the median concentration of total Se in soils was 0.308 mg/kg, which is higher than China's soil background. The mean proportion of phosphate extracted Se in total Se was 12.2 %. The values of total Se, phosphate extracted Se, and soil organic matter (SOM) in soils increased with the increasing stratum age. In contrast, the coefficient of weathering and eluviation (BA) values decreased. The analysis of statistics and Geodetector revealed that the SOM, stratum, and BA were the dominant controlling factors for the contents and distributions of soil total Se and phosphate extracted Se. This study provided strong evidence that the soil properties that affected the total Se and Se bioavailability were modulated by the local geological background, and had important practical implications for addressing Se malnutrition and developing the Se-rich resource in the study region and similar geological settings in different parts of the globe. Porous ceramics were synthesized using porcelain tile polishing residue (PTPR) and slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) as a reinforcing agent through a hydrothermal autoclaving method. The process parameters, including the quantity of slaked lime added, the hydrothermal autoclaving temperature, and the reaction duration, were optimized meticulously. The composition, structure, thermal and physical properties of the samples were thoroughly analyzed via Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) measurements, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that the incorporation of slaked lime and hydrothermal autoclaving led to the formation of calcium silicate hydrate, which corresponded with an enhancement in the strength of the sample. Notably, when the quantity of slaked lime added was optimized at 30 wt%, the formation of tobermorite (5CaO·6SiO2·5H2O) was detected. At a hydrothermal autoclaving temperature of 150 °C, the formation of only sheet-like calcium silicate hydrate was observed. In contrast, at an elevated temperature of 180 °C and 210 °C, needle-like tobermorite was successfully synthesized. The porous ceramic with the most favorable structure was obtained through autoclaving at 180 °C for 10 h with 30 wt% slaked lime, exhibiting a total pore volume of 0.11 mL/g, a specific surface area of 26.35 m2/g, and a mesoporous volume fraction of 90.40%. Ultrasound-modulated optical tomography (UOT) leverages the strengths of light and sound, enabling deep-tissue imaging with optical absorption contrast and acoustic resolution. Camera-based UOT, with its parallel detection capability, excels at handling weak light–sound interactions. However, the limited frame rate of the camera typically results in poor axial resolution and poses challenges for holographic measurements. In this study, we introduced intersected ultrasonic modulation to address these limitations, thereby achieving equal resolution in both lateral and axial dimensions through referenceless measurements. As a proof of concept, we constructed an imaging system and demonstrated two-dimensional imaging for absorptive targets buried inside a scattering medium. Over the past decade, we have witnessed the development of cell transplantation as a new strategy for repairing spinal cord injury (SCI). However, due to the complexity of the central nervous system (CNS), achieving successful clinical translation remains a significant challenge. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUMSCs) possess distinct advantages, such as easy collection, lack of ethical concerns, high self-renewal ability, multilineage differentiation potential, and immunomodulatory properties. hUMSCs are promising for regenerating the injured spinal cord to a significant extent. At the same time, for advancing SCI treatment, the appropriate benefit and risk evaluation methods play a pivotal role in determining the clinical applicability of treatment plans. Hence, this study discusses the advantages and risks of hUMSCs in SCI treatment across four dimensions—comprehensive evaluation of motor and sensory function, imaging, electrophysiology, and autonomic nervous system (ANS) function—aiming to improve the rationality of relevant clinical research and the feasibility of clinical translation. The Awulale Iron Metallogenic Belt (AIMB) has developed many medium–large iron deposits, of which the Zhibo iron deposit is selected as the research object in this paper. The Zhibo deposit's ore primarily consists of magnetite as the main mineral, accompanied by extensive epidotization. The mineral assemblage includes diopside, albite, actinolite, epidote, chlorite, K-feldspar, quartz, calcite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite. Magnetite is classified into two groups based on sulfide content and mineral assemblage (MagI for sulfide-free and MagII for sulfide-rich ores). Two-stage mineralization of magnetite has been identified based on mineral assemblages and paragenesis, including the magmatic stage MagI and hydrothermal stage MagII. Mag I shows inhomogeneous backscattered electron (BSE) textures and consists of BSE-light and -dark domains (Mag I-L and MagI-D). Seven subtypes of magnetite have been recognized in this deposit. MagI-L and MagI-D have formed in the magmatic stage and show BSE images in light and dark colors, respectively. MagI-L is anhedral to subhedral and is inclusion-free. MagI-D has mainly replaced MagI-L along fractures and contains inclusions and pores. MagII has formed in the hydrothermal stage and is characterized by coupled dissolution–reprecipitation (DRP) textures. It can be divided into five sub-generations, that is, MagII-1, MagII-2, MagII-3, MagII-L, and MagII-D. MagII-1, MagII-2, and MagII-3 comprise the core–mantle–rim texture, while MagII-L and MagII-D comprise the core–rim texture. MagII-1 is BSE-light and is enriched with inclusions and pores. MagII-2 has partly replaced MagII-1 and exhibits oscillatory zoning under BSE imaging. It also contains inclusions. BSE-light MagII-3 occurs as overgrowth along MagII-2 margins and is inclusion-free. MagI magnetite is enriched with V, Cr, and Ni, whereas MagII is enriched with W, Ta, Nb, Sr, Sb, Sn, Y, Zr, Mg, Al, and Ti, indicating a decreased temperature of magnetite formation. MagI-L crystallizes from the original magma, while MagI-D is formed from the residual magma enriched with incompatible elements. MagII crystallizes from later multiple hydrothermal activities through the dissolution of early magnetite and the re-precipitation of later magnetite or from MagI-D which has later undergone a hydrothermal overprinting process. According to the texture and chemical composition of magnetite from the Zhibo deposit, we suggest that the Zhibo iron deposit was formed from the initial magmatic origin and then underwent a hydrothermal overprinting process. Background: Congestive heart failure (CHF) demonstrates a heightened prevalence in individuals with diabetes mellitus within Intensive Care Units. The occurrence of abnormal chloride levels is frequently observed in critically ill patients, yet its clinical significance remains subject to debate. This study endeavors to explore the relationship between serum chloride levels and in-hospital mortality among patients affected by both congestive heart failure and diabetes. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, utilizing data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV) database, focusing on adult patients in the United States. The impact of serum chloride levels upon ICU admission on in-hospital mortality was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression models, generalized additive models and subgroup analysis. Results: The study encompassed 7,063 patients with coexisting diabetes and congestive heart failure. The fully adjusted model revealed an inverse association between serum chloride levels and in-hospital mortality. As a tertile variable (Q3 vs Q1), the odds ratio (OR) was 0.73 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 0.54–0.98 (p = 0.039). As a continuous variable, per 1 mmol/L increment, the OR (95% CI) was 0.97 (0.96–0.99, p = 0.01). The relationship between serum chloride and in-hospital mortality demonstrated linearity (non-linear p = 0.958). Stratified analyses further validated the robustness of this correlation. Conclusions: Serum chloride levels exhibited a negative association with in-hospital mortality in patients with both congestive heart failure and diabetes. Nevertheless, prospective, randomized, controlled studies are warranted to corroborate and validate the findings presented in this investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A hit-and-run vaccine system, with POx-Hmi/OVA nanovaccine firstly elicit OVA257-264 specific T cell responses, and then PMEBOx-MMP-OVA specifically deliver OVA257-264 peptides to decorate the tumor cell surface, thus results in T cell killing to tumor cells regardless the original surface epitopes. [Display omitted] Neoantigen cancer vaccines have been envisioned as one of the most promising means for cancer therapies. However, identifying neoantigens for tumor types with low tumor mutation burdens continues to limit the effectiveness of neoantigen vaccines. Herein, we proposed a "hit-and-run" vaccine strategy which primes T cells to attack tumor cells decorated with exogenous "neo-antigens". This vaccine strategy utilizes a peptide nanovaccine to elicit antigen-specific T cell responses after tumor-specific decoration with a nanocarrier containing the same peptide antigens. We demonstrated that a poly(2-oxazoline)s (POx) conjugated with OVA 257-264 peptide through a matrix metalloprotease 2 (MMP-2) sensitive linker could efficiently and selectively decorate tumor cells with OVA peptides in vivo. Then, a POx-based nanovaccine containing OVA 257-264 peptides to elicit OVA-specific T cell responses was designed. In combination with this hit-and-run vaccine system, an effective vaccine therapy was demonstrated across tumor types even without OVA antigen expression. Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked recessive inheritance lysosomal storage disorder caused by pathogenic mutations in the GLA gene leading to a deficiency of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A (α-Gal A). Multiple organ systems are implicated in FD, most notably the kidney, heart, and central nervous system. In our previous study, we identified four GLA mutations from four independent Fabry disease families with kidney disease or neuropathic pain: c.119C>A (p.P40H), c.280T>C (C94R), c.680G>C (p.R227P) and c.801+1G>A (p.L268fsX3). To reveal the molecular mechanism underlying the predisposition to Fabry disease caused by GLA mutations, we analyzed the effects of these four GLA mutations on the protein structure of α-galactosidase A using bioinformatics methods. The results showed that these mutations have a significant impact on the internal dynamics and structures of GLA, and all these altered amino acids are close to the enzyme activity center and lead to significantly reduced enzyme activity. Furthermore, these mutations led to the accumulation of autophagosomes and impairment of autophagy in the cells, which may in turn negatively regulate autophagy by slightly increasing the phosphorylation of mTOR. Moreover, the overexpression of these GLA mutants promoted the expression of lysosome-associated membrane protein 2 (LAMP2), resulting in an increased number of lysosomes. Virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines had shown great potential during the COVID-19 pandemic, and was thought to be the next generation of antiviral vaccine technology due to viromimetic structures. However, the time-consuming and complicated processes in establishing a current recombinant-protein–based VLP vaccine has limited its quick launch to the out-bursting pandemic. To simplify and optimize VLP vaccine design, we herein report a kind of viromimetic polymer nanoparticle vaccine (VPNVax), with subunit receptor-binding domain (RBD) proteins conjugated to the surface of polyethylene glycol- b -polylactic acid (PEG- b -PLA) nanoparticles for vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. The preparation of VPNVax based on synthetic polymer particle and chemical post-conjugation makes it possible to rapidly replace the antigens and construct matched vaccines at the emergence of different viruses. Using this modular preparation system, we identified that VPNVax with surface protein coverage of 20%–25% had the best immunostimulatory activity, which could keep high levels of specific antibody titers over 5 months and induce virus neutralizing activity when combined with an aluminum adjuvant. Moreover, the polymer nano-vectors could be armed with more immune-adjuvant functions by loading immunostimulant agents or chemical chirality design. Influence Maximization (IM) is an important topic in the field of social network analysis, and is widely used in viral marketing, recommendation systems, rumor prevention and other fields. The meta-heuristic method has excellent performance because of high scalability and low complexity, however, the objective function of existing meta-heuristic methods can only be applied to propagation models with small probabilities. In addition, there is room for further improvement in performance of meta-heuristic methods. In order to solve the above problems, this paper transforms the influence maximization problem into an optimization problem and designs a novel objective function based on the six degrees of separation theory of social networks. Then, with the designed objective function, this paper discretizes the harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm by redefining the energy and location representation rules for influence maximization problem. Experimental results on eight real datasets demonstrate that the proposed objective function exhibits high accuracy and generality, suitable for various probability propagation models. With the exploration and exploitation process in steps, dynamically using different strategies various situations, the proposed DHHO algorithm exhibits better performance in dealing with influence maximization problem, outperforming the state-of-the-art methods. Recently, a global outbreak of COVID-19 has rapidly spread to various national regions. As the number of COVID-19 patients has increased, some of those infected with SARS-CoV-2 have developed a variety of psychiatric symptoms, including depression, cognitive impairment, and fatigue. A distinct storm of inflammatory factors that contribute to the initial disease but also a persistent post-acute phase syndrome has been reported in patients with COVID-19. Neuropsychological symptoms including depression, cognitive impairment, and fatigue are closely related to circulating and local (brain) inflammatory factors. Natural products are currently being examined for their ability to treat numerous complications caused by COVID-19. Among them, ginseng has anti-inflammatory, immune system stimulating, neuroendocrine modulating, and other effects, which may help improve psychiatric symptoms. This review summarizes the basic mechanisms of COVID-19 pneumonia, psychiatric symptoms following coronavirus infections, effects of ginseng on depression, restlessness, and other psychiatric symptoms associated with post-COVID syn-dromes, as well as possible mechanisms underlying these effects. The prevalence of non-suicidal self-injurious (NSSI) in adolescents is high. However, few studies exist to predict NSSI in this population. This study employed a machine learning algorithm to develop a predictive model, aiming to more accurately assess the risk of NSSI in Chinese adolescents. Sociodemographic, psychological data were collected in 50 schools in western China. We constructed eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model and multivariate logistic regression model to predict the risk of NSSI and nomograms are plotted. Data from 13,304 adolescents were used for model development, with an average age of 13.00 ± 2.17 years; 617 individuals (4.6 %) reported non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors. The results of the XGBoost model showed that depression and anxiety were the top two predictors of NSSI in adolescents. The results of the multivariate logistic regression model showed that the risk factors for adolescent NSSI behaviors include: gender (being female), Age, Living with whom (father), History of psychiatric consultation, Stress, Depression, Anxiety, Tolerance, Emotion abreaction. The XGBoost prediction and multivariate logistic regression model showed good predictive ability. Coastal wetlands have great potential to mitigate climate change. However, in recent decades, the construction of aquaculture ponds has degraded coastal habitats, especially mangroves. Meanwhile, the lack of synchronized monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO 2) fluxes in coastal ponds and mangroves hinders the promotion of carbon neutrality target through the implementation of coastal wetland rehabilitation. To address this issue, we deployed two eddy-covariance systems in the ponds and nearby mangroves to measure the net ecosystem CO 2 exchange between atmosphere and ecosystems for two years. The results indicated that both the ponds and mangroves were CO 2 sinks at the annual scale, with mean net ecosystem production (NEP) of 123 ± 39 and 1296 ± 32 g C m−2 year−1, respectively. During the 2-year period, the ponds acted as CO 2 sources in certain seasons, while the mangroves displayed consistently high seasonal NEP. The construction of ponds by clearing mangroves would reduce NEP along the coasts of the Leizhou Peninsula by about 91% (96% for China), while abandoning all ponds for mangrove rehabilitation could have a significant CO 2 mitigation benefit (i.e., 214.7 Gg year−1). Moreover, we compared how CO 2 fluxes responded to global solar radiation and temperature by analyzing relevant parameters in the two ecosystems. Overall, the ponds showed lower light-saturated net CO 2 exchange and Q 10 values compared to the mangroves. Finally, we applied an advanced machine learning local interpretation algorithm to investigate the crucial drivers and their main effects on NEP. This analysis highlighted global solar radiation as the predominant driver for NEP in both ecosystems. High temperature and vapor pressure deficit inhibited mangrove NEP, particularly during summer, whereas pond NEP exhibited greater volatility in response to meteorological conditions such as temperature.
