The aim of the present study was to explore the risk factors of postoperative airway complications in children with oral floor mass. The first choice of auxiliary examination method for children with oral floor mass is also proposed. This retrospective study included 50 children with floor-of-mouth (FOM) masses. Medical records were reviewed, and information on age of onset, functional impacts present, age at consultation, imaging findings, history of preoperative aspiration, pathology findings, properties of biopsied fluid, treatment modality, postoperative outcomes, and operation were recorded. A total of 20 patients exhibited functional impacts such as difficulty in breathing and feeding. Ultrasound examination was performed in 28 cases; and magnetic resonance imaging, in 38 cases. The diagnosis was lymphatic malformation in 12 cases, developmental cyst in 29 cases, and solid mass in 7 cases. There were 28 cases of surgical resection, 9 cases underwent multiple puncture volume reduction followed by surgery, 11 cases treated using sclerotherapy injection, and 1 case treated using sclerotherapy injection and surgical resection. Young age, functional impact, and high grade of lymphatic duct malformation increased the risk of surgical treatment. B-scan ultrasound is the first choice for the diagnosis of FOM masses in children.

Background: Anxiety and depression are prevalent comorbidities in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, existing research has yielded conflicting findings regarding the effects of social frailty on anxiety and depression. The primary aim of this study is to validate the relationship between social frailty and social support with anxiety and depression in patients with acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) and to investigate whether social support could explain the variations in prior study outcomes for patients with AECOPD. Methods: Of the 315 patients hospitalized with AECOPD at the respiratory intensive care unit of a large tertiary care institution in Sichuan Province of China, between August 2022 and June 2023 who were surveyed, 306 were included in the analysis after excluding missing data. We conducted a logistic regression analysis to examine the associations of social frailty and social support with anxiety and depression and performed mediation analyses to examine whether social support mediates the relationship of social frailty with anxiety and depression. Results: The logistic regression analysis revealed that social frailty did not associate anxiety or depression in patients with AECOPD. The mediation analysis supported this idea and indicated that while social frailty does not directly influence anxiety or depression, it can through social support. Conclusions: The findings suggest that while social frailty may not directly impact anxiety or depression in patients with AECOPD, social support plays a crucial mediating role. Enhancing social support can indirectly alleviate anxiety and depression among these patients. Enhancing social support networks should thus be prioritized by healthcare providers and family members to improve mental health outcomes in this patient population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With its excellent biocompatibility and degradability, magnesium alloy has now been widely used as a promising medical metal material in clinical medical research, but its application in this field is greatly limited by shortcomings such as too fast and uncontrollable corrosion rate and poor wear resistance of magnesium alloys. In this paper, the self-prepared Mg-1Mn-2Zn alloy was subjected to laser surface melting (LSM) under different process parameters after T6 aging treatment to study the organizational properties of Mg-1Mn-2Zn alloy before and after laser melting treatment and under different scanning speeds. The results show that after LSM, a melting layer is formed on the surface of Mg-1Mn-2Zn alloy, and the grain size of the melting layer is significantly refined, with an average size of 5 μm, and the hardness of the melting layer was improved. The second phase content was reduced, and the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the melting layer were improved to different degrees. This paper addresses the trajectory tracking problem for a class of uncertain manipulator systems under the effect of external disturbances. The main challenges lie in the input constraints and the lack of measurements of joint velocities. An extend‐state‐observer is utilized to estimate the velocity signals; then, a neural‐network‐based adaptive controller is proposed to solve the problem, where a term based on the nominal model is included to enhance the tracking ability, and the effect of uncertainties and disturbances are compensated by a neural‐network term. Compared with the existing methods, the main distinctive features of the presented approach are: (i) The control law is guaranteed to be bounded by design, instead of directly bounded by a saturation function. (ii) The trade‐off between the performance and robustness of the presented controller can be easily tuned by a parameter that depends on the size of model uncertainties and external disturbances. By virtue of the Lyapunov theorem, the convergence properties of the proposed controller are rigorously proved. The performance of the controller is validated via both simulations and experiments conducted on a two‐degree‐of‐freedom robot manipulator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As with many industries, the early life science R&D drug discovery sector is facing growing pressure and higher demands on products in terms of cost, quality, and time‐to‐market. Additionally, the complexity of involved targets and systems, requirements for rapid, safe, and developable candidates are increasing. The drug discovery market, often regarded as rather conservative, relies more and more on advanced technologies. It is therefore a significant task for suppliers to create good solutions that meet customer requirements. The life science industry has a long tradition of using projects as the preferred method to manage these complex systems developments, such as the production of target proteins, screening of compounds, and follow‐up of hit compounds. When applying the project approach, the level of uncertainty is usually high, and the risk of those uncertainties must be managed starting in the early planning phase. Thus, this paper focuses on the issue of how to manage risks in the early project planning phase. We first review state‐of‐the‐art practices in risk management for complex systems project management and identify an important framework, Novelty‐Technology‐Cost‐Pace (NTCP), and apply it to successful risk management for early life science projects. Through an in‐depth case study in the life science industry, we demonstrate a systemic integration of the NTPC framework into project planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Laminin subunit gamma-1 (LAMC1) is a major extracellular matrix molecule involved in the tumor microenvironment. Knowledge of the biological features and clinical relevance of LAMC1 in cancers remains limited. Methods: We conducted comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of LAMC1 gene expression and clinical relevance in pan-cancer datasets of public databases and validated LAMC1 expression in glioma tissues and cell lines. The association and regulatory mechanism between hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and LAMC1 expression were explored. Results: LAMC1 expression in most cancers in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) including glioma was significantly higher than that in normal tissues, which had a poor prognosis and were related to various clinicopathological features. Data from the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas also showed high expression of LAMC1 in glioma associated with poor prognoses. In clinical glioma tissues, LAMC1 protein was highly expressed and correlated to poor overall survival. LAMC1 knockdown in Hs683 glioma cells attenuated cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while overexpression of LAMC1 in U251 cells leads to the opposite trend. Most TCGA solid cancers including glioma showed enhancement of HIF-1α expression. High HIF-1α expression leads to adverse prognosis in gliomas, besides, HIF-1α expression was positively related to LAMC1. Mechanistically, HIF-1α directly upregulated LAMC1 promotor activity. Hypoxia (2% O2)-treated Hs683 and U251 cells exhibited upregulated HIF-1α and LAMC1 expression, which was significantly attenuated by HIF-1α inhibitor YC-1 and accompanied by attenuated cell proliferation and invasion. Conclusions: High expression of LAMC1 in some solid tumors including gliomas suggests a poor prognosis. The hypoxic microenvironment in gliomas activates the HIF-1α/LAMC1 signaling, thereby promoting tumor progression. Targeted intervention on the HIF-1α/LAMC1 signaling attenuates cell growth and invasion, suggesting a new strategy for glioma treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
