Este artigo analisa a experiência da oficina de cinema "Olhares Estudantis", realizada com estudantes do Ensino Médio Integrado, que buscou promover a criação de narrativas audiovisuais autorais e reflexivas sobre suas vivências no ambiente escolar. A oficina foi estruturada em torno de dispositivos pedagógicos específicos, como a Fotografia Narrada, o Minuto Lumière e o Filme-Carta, com o objetivo de permitir que os alunos explorassem suas identidades, memórias e a relação com o espaço escolar. O processo criativo foi conduzido de forma colaborativa, com momentos de discussão, produção e análise das produções audiovisuais, o que possibilitou o desenvolvimento de um olhar crítico e sensível dos estudantes sobre si mesmos e o mundo ao seu redor. A oficina culminou na realização de uma mostra audiovisual, em que os filmes produzidos foram compartilhados com a comunidade escolar. O artigo analisa os resultados dessa experiência, evidenciando a relevância do cinema como metodologia ativa no processo educativo e sua eficácia em promover a autonomia, o pensamento crítico e a expressão identitária dos estudantes.

The rapid loss of viability, coupled with the difficulties and limitations in conserving coffee seeds, are some of the challenges that nurseries are currently facing. Thus, the objective of this work was to analyze the physiological quality of stored Arabica coffee seeds from cultivars recommended for planting in Brazilian mountainous regions. Seeds from 10 Arabica coffee cultivars were used: Catucaí-785/15, Catucaí-2SL, Catucaí-24/137, Japan, Arara, Acauã, Catuaí IAC-81, Mundo Novo IAC-379/19, Catuaí IAC-62, and Caturra IAC-479. The seeds were collected in the Arabica coffee seed production field, in the municipality of Marechal Floriano-ES. They were subsequently processed and dried in the shade, at room temperature, until reaching a humidity of 35 ± 1%, analyzed and stored in a natural laboratory environment (25 ± 2 °C), for 24 months. The following were analyzed: seed water content, germination, germination speed index, electrical conductivity and potassium leaching. The experimental design used was completely randomized, with ten cultivars, two storage times, with four replications of 25 seeds. Storing arabica coffee seeds for 24 months results in a drop in the germination percentage. Stored seeds of the Catucai 24/137 and Arara cultivars showed germination percentages similar to those of newly harvested seeds. Seeds of the Catuai IAC-62 cultivar maintain vigor during storage. The stored seeds of the Caturra IAC-476 and Japi cultivars showed a reduction in physiological quality. Electrical conductivity and potassium leaching tests are efficient in identifying seeds in an advanced state of deterioration. Seeds of Arabica coffee cultivars stored for 24 months, under the conditions of the present study, produce abnormal seedlings.

Background and Objectives: Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a debilitating facial pain disorder, often necessitating surgical interventions when medication proves insufficient. Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) is an established therapeutic option. Limited studies explored the feasibility of a third SRS procedure. Our study investigates the safety and efficacy of a third SRS procedure for recurrent TN., Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis across multiple centers using databases collected prospectively. Pain status was evaluated utilizing the BNI Pain Intensity Scales. The Kaplan-Meier method was employed to estimate the time to recurrence, with group comparisons conducted using log-rank tests. Associations were explored using Chi-square and logistic regression models., Results: Ten institutions contributed with a total of 35 patients. A third SRS revealed sustained effectiveness with a pain control rate of 82.7%. The median time to recurrence was 35.5 months. New sensory dysfunction following the third procedure occurred in 22% of patients who had preserved sensory function after the second procedure. When considering those who developed sensory dysfunction after the second procedure, 40% of the entire cohort was affected. There were no significant differences in pain recurrence intervals among the three procedures. A meta-analysis, combining data from previous studies, showed that 89.6% of patients achieved some degree of pain control after a third SRS, with 27.4% experiencing new sensory dysfunction and a median time to recurrence of 31.6 months., Conclusion: Our study, the largest on the topic, affirms the sustained effectiveness of a third SRS for TN, providing comparable pain relief to initial procedures. Notably, an extended pain-free interval after the third SRS session was observed. Facial sensory dysfunction emerged as the primary side effect. Larger studies are warranted to explore correlations with demographics and treatment parameters for a comprehensive understanding of repeat SRS in managing recurrent TN., (© 2024. Imidazoles are present in Earth's atmosphere in both the gas-phase and in aerosol particles, and have been implicated in the formation of brown carbon aerosols. The gas-phase oxidation of imidazole (C 3 N 2 H 4 ) by hydroxyl radicals has been shown to be preferentially initiated via OH-addition to position C5, producing the 5-hydroxyimidazolyl radical adduct. However, the fate of this adduct upon reaction with O 2 in the atmospheric gas-phase is currently unknown. We employed an automated approach to investigate the reaction mechanism and kinetics of imidazole's OH-initiated gas-phase oxidation, in the presence of O 2 and NO x . The explored mechanism included reactions available to first-generation RO 2 radicals, as well as alkoxyl radicals produced from RO 2 + NO reactions. Product distributions were obtained by assembling and solving a master equation, under conditions relevant to the Earth's atmosphere. Our calculations show a complex, branched reaction mechanism, which nevertheless converges to yield two major closed-shell products: 4 H -imidazol-4-ol (4 H -4ol) and N , N '-diformylformamidine (FMF). At 298 K and 1 atm, we estimate the yields of 4 H -4ol and FMF from imidazole oxidation initiated via OH-addition to position C5 to be 34 : 66, 12 : 85 and 2 : 95 under 10 ppt, 100 ppt and 1 ppb of NO respectively. This work also revealed O 2 -migration pathways between the α- N -imino peroxyl radical isomers. This reaction channel is fast for the first-generation RO 2 radicals, and may be important during the atmospheric oxidation of other unsaturated organic nitrogen compounds as well.

The BioRED track at BioCreative VIII calls for a community effort to identify, semantically categorize, and highlight the novelty factor of the relationships between biomedical entities in unstructured text. Relation extraction is crucial for many biomedical natural language processing (NLP) applications, from drug discovery to custom medical solutions. The BioRED track simulates a real-world application of biomedical relationship extraction, and as such, considers multiple biomedical entity types, normalized to their specific corresponding database identifiers, as well as defines relationships between them in the documents. The challenge consisted of two subtasks: (i) in Subtask 1, participants were given the article text and human expert annotated entities, and were asked to extract the relation pairs, identify their semantic type and the novelty factor, and (ii) in Subtask 2, participants were given only the article text, and were asked to build an end-to-end system that could identify and categorize the relationships and their novelty. We received a total of 94 submissions from 14 teams worldwide. The highest F-score performances achieved for the Subtask 1 were: 77.17% for relation pair identification, 58.95% for relation type identification, 59.22% for novelty identification, and 44.55% when evaluating all of the above aspects of the comprehensive relation extraction. The highest F-score performances achieved for the Subtask 2 were: 55.84% for relation pair, 43.03% for relation type, 42.74% for novelty, and 32.75% for comprehensive relation extraction. Background: Although molecular biomarkers have significantly advanced precision oncology in glioblastoma, the prevalence of these biomarkers by race remains underexplored. This study aims to characterize the genomic alterations in glioblastoma across Asian, Black, and White patients, offering insights into racial disparities that may influence treatment outcomes and disease progression., Methods: Analyzing data from the American Association for Cancer Research Project Genomics Evidence Neoplasia Information Exchange database V13.0, this study examined 2390 primary glioblastoma samples from unique patients. Genomic alterations in 566 cancer-related genes were assessed using targeted next-generation sequencing panels from 3 large cancer institutes. The patient cohort included 112 Asians, 67 Blacks, and 2211 Whites. Statistical significance of associations between genomic alterations and race was evaluated using the chi-squared test, with the Benjamini-Hochberg method applied to control for multiple testing adjustments., Results: Significant racial differences were observed in the frequency of genomic alterations. Asians exhibited a higher frequency of TP53 alterations (52.68%, P < 0.001), Blacks showed more frequent alterations in NRAS (7.46%, P < 0.001), MTOR (10.45%, P = 0.039), and TET2 (8.96%, P = 0.039), and Whites had a higher occurrence of PTEN alterations (48.67%, P = 0.045). Additionally, Black patients had an elevated rate of RET deletions (14.29%, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: This study identifies significant racial disparities in the alteration frequencies of 6 key glioblastoma genes: NRAS, TP53, MTOR, TET2, PTEN, and RET. These findings underscore the need for racial considerations in glioblastoma treatment strategies and highlight potential avenues for targeted therapeutic interventions. The identification of medical concepts from clinical narratives has a large interest in the biomedical scientific community due to its importance in treatment improvements or drug development research. Biomedical named entity recognition (NER) in clinical texts is crucial for automated information extraction, facilitating patient record analysis, drug development, and medical research. Traditional approaches often focus on single-class NER tasks, yet recent advancements emphasize the necessity of addressing multi-class scenarios, particularly in complex biomedical domains. This paper proposes a strategy to integrate a multi-head conditional random field (CRF) classifier for multi-class NER in Spanish clinical documents. Our methodology overcomes overlapping entity instances of different types, a common challenge in traditional NER methodologies, by using a multi-head CRF model. This architecture enhances computational efficiency and ensures scalability for multi-class NER tasks, maintaining high performance. By combining four diverse datasets, SympTEMIST, MedProcNER, DisTEMIST, and PharmaCoNER, we expand the scope of NER to encompass five classes: symptoms, procedures, diseases, chemicals, and proteins. To the best of our knowledge, these datasets combined create the largest Spanish multi-class dataset focusing on biomedical entity recognition and linking for clinical notes, which is important to train a biomedical model in Spanish. We also provide entity linking to the multi-lingual Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) vocabulary, with the eventual goal of performing biomedical relation extraction. Through experimentation and evaluation of Spanish clinical documents, our strategy provides competitive results against single-class NER models. For NER, our system achieves a combined micro-averaged F1-score of 78.73, with clinical mentions normalized to SNOMED CT with an end-to-end F1-score of 54.51. This work presents the isolation of endophytic fungi from the leaves of Campomanesia adamantium (Cambess.) O. Berg (Myrtaceae), a native species found in Brazil and popularly known as "guabiroba-do-campo", with abundant distribution in the Brazilian Cerrado. It has been popularly used for its anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrheal, blood cholesterol-reducing, urinary antiseptic, and depurative properties. Theese fungi are microorganisms that live inside higher plants, at least for a period of their life cycle, occupying the intercellular spaces of plant tissues such as leaves and stems. These fungi are harmless to the host plant, and their secondary metabolites promote protection, regulate growth, combat bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and promote resistance to abiotic stress, as well as insecticidal effects. Endophytic fungi associated with the leaves of C. adamantium were isolated using the culture medium isolation technique. After growth, the fungi were divided into groups based on morphotypes. Fungal genomic DNA was extracted, and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conducted to amplify the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 regions of rRNA, and the nucleotide sequences obtained were compared with those available in the GenBank database for molecular identification of the isolates. The phylogenetic tree was constructed using MEGA 11 software. The results showed representatives of the Ascomycota phylum, and it was possible to identify at the genus level 18 fungi of the genera Colletotrichum, Diaporthe, Epicoccum, and Neofusicoccum.

Biomedical relation extraction is an ongoing challenge within the natural language processing community. Its application is important for understanding scientific biomedical literature, with many use cases, such as drug discovery, precision medicine, disease diagnosis, treatment optimization and biomedical knowledge graph construction. Therefore, the development of a tool capable of effectively addressing this task holds the potential to improve knowledge discovery by automating the extraction of relations from research manuscripts. The first track in the BioCreative VIII competition extended the scope of this challenge by introducing the detection of novel relations within the literature. This paper describes that our participation system initially focused on jointly extracting and classifying novel relations between biomedical entities. We then describe our subsequent advancement to an end-to-end model. Specifically, we enhanced our initial system by incorporating it into a cascading pipeline that includes a tagger and linker module. This integration enables the comprehensive extraction of relations and classification of their novelty directly from raw text. Our experiments yielded promising results, and our tagger module managed to attain state-of-the-art named entity recognition performance, with a micro F1-score of 90.24, while our end-to-end system achieved a competitive novelty F1-score of 24.59. In the last few decades, atmospheric formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) has gained increasing attention due to their impact on air quality and climate. However, methods to predict their abundance are mainly empirical and may fail under real atmospheric conditions. In this work, a close-to-mechanistic approach allowing SOA quantification is presented, with a focus on a chain-like chemical reaction called "autoxidation". A novel framework is employed to (a) describe the gas-phase chemistry, (b) predict the products' molecular structures and (c) explore the contribution of autoxidation chemistry on SOA formation under various conditions. As a proof of concept, the method is applied to benzene, an important anthropogenic SOA precursor. Our results suggest autoxidation to explain up to 100% of the benzene-SOA formed under low-NO x laboratory conditions. Under atmospheric-like day-time conditions, the calculated benzene-aerosol mass continuously forms, as expected based on prior work. Additionally, a prompt increase, driven by the NO 3 radical, is predicted by the model at dawn. Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign intracranial tumors posing significant management challenges. This study aims to compare the outcomes of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and watchful waiting (WW) in the management of newly diagnosed VS, integrating findings from both retrospective and the pioneering V-REX prospective trial. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Studies directly comparing SRS with WW for newly diagnosed VS were included. Primary outcomes focused on hearing preservation assessed through the AAO-HNS or Gardner-Robertson hearing classification scales and tumor progression, with secondary outcomes focusing on neurological symptoms, and the need for further treatment. Thirteen studies encompassing 1,635 patients (WW: 891; SRS: 744) were included.While no significant difference was found in serviceable hearing loss at last follow-up (RR = 1.51, [95%CI: 0.98, 2.32], p = 0.06), significant differences favoring WW were observed in pure tone audiometry (PTA) (MD = -13.51 [95%CI: -22.66, -4.37], p = 0.004) and word recognition score (WRS) (MD = 20.48 [95%CI: 9.72, 31.25], p = 0.0002). Analysis of tumor progression indicated no overall significant difference in risk between SRS and WW (RR = 0.40, [95%CI 0.07, 2.40], p = 0.32), but subgroup analysis suggested a lower risk with SRS in certain contexts. The need for further treatments favored SRS (RR = 0.24, [95%CI: 0.07, 0.74], p = 0.007). No significant differences were found in tinnitus and imbalance between the two groups. This comprehensive analysis suggests no marked difference in functional hearing preservation between SRS and WW in managing VS. However, untreated tumors commonly necessitate additional interventions. These findings highlight the need for individualized treatment decisions and underscore the importance of continued monitoring. Marinas are central hubs of global maritime leisure and transport, yet their operations can deteriorate the environmental quality of sediments. In response, this study investigated the metal contamination history associated with antifouling paint uses in a sediment core collected from Bracuhy marina (Southeast Brazil). Analysis target major and trace elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and Sn), rare earth elements (REEs), and Pb isotopes. The modification in Pb isotopic ratios and REEs pattern unequivocally revealed sediment provenance disruption following the marina construction. Metal distribution in the sediment core demonstrates that concentrations of Cu and Zn increased by up to 15 and 5 times, respectively, compared to the local background. Understanding gastrointestinal parasite distribution is crucial for effective control programs in horses. This study reports the prevalence of helminth infections in horses and selected risk factors (i.e., breed, age, climate, season) by analyzing 19,276 fecal samples from the Laboratory of Veterinary Clinical Parasitology, in Curitiba, Southern Brazil. The analyses were carried out from 2008 to 2019, coming from 153 stud farms located in 60 municipalities of nine Brazilian states. The parasite prevalence was 73.3%, with 72.1% present in the adult population and 80.6% in young horses. Strongyles were present in 100% horse farms. Strongyles had a prevalence of 72.1% with a mean FEC of 453.53 (+/- 717.6). Parascaris spp. had a prevalence of 5.8% and a FEC of 17.11 (+/- 149.2). The tropical wet/monsoon climate (Am) showed the lowest FEC for strongyles and Parascaris spp. when compared to the other climates. In the logistic regression analysis, young horses exhibited 4.6 times higher odds ratio (OR) (3.9-5.5) of Parascaris spp. and 1.2 (1.1-1.4) times higher OR of strongyles egg shedding when compared to adults (P < 0.001). Summer presented a higher risk for Parascaris spp. and Strongyles eggs when compared to the other seasons (P < 0.001). Mangalarga Marchador, Criollo, and Crossbred breeds were identified with higher OR of Parascaris spp. egg shedding than Thoroughbred. Introduction: The aim of this observational study was to evaluate bone growth at the recipient site of autotransplanted teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and to compare it to the control tooth., Methods: Bone growth was measured on CBCT images obtained from the anterior region of the maxilla, which received a single transplant of immature premolars due to early loss of the central incisor. The results were compared to the bone growth of contralateral central incisor that served as control. The sample consisted of 13 autotransplanted teeth and 13 control teeth. It was determined the thickness of the buccal bone of the marginal ridge, the thickness of the palatal bone of the marginal ridge, the height of the maxillary bone, and the thickness of the maxillary bone at its mid-height. The measurements were analyzed statistically, adopting a significance level of 5%., Results: The mean interval between the dental autotransplantation surgery and the CBCT scan was 16.2 years. The mean thickness of the buccal bone of the marginal ridge, thickness of the palatal bone of the marginal ridge, height of the maxillary bone, and thickness of the maxillary bone at its mid-height were, respectively, 0.85, 0.94, 19.6, and 8.85 mm for autotransplanted teeth and 0.79, 1.09, 18.88, and 8.5 mm for control teeth. There were no significant differences in the bone measurements between autotransplanted and control teeth (P > .05)., Conclusions: The growth of maxillary bone in the region that received the autotransplanted tooth was proportional to that of maxillary bone that supports the contralateral tooth. Bicyclic guanidines are utilized in organic synthesis as base catalysts or reagents. They also offer a platform for coordination chemistry, for example in CO 2 activation, and their carboxylate salts offer an efficient media for cellulose dissolution. We have studied a series of bicyclic guanidines with varying ring sizes and with varying methyl substituents with a specific aim to find hydrolytically stable acetate salts for dissolution and processing of cellulose. Different superbase synthesis pathways were tested, followed by hydrolytic stability and cellulose dissolution capacity tests. The synthesis pathways were designed to enable the scale up of the production of the superbases considering the availability of the starting molecules and the feasibility of the synthesis. Background: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is used to treat recurrent or residual nonfunctioning pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (NFPA). The objective of the study was to assess imaging and development of new pituitary hormone deficiency., Methods: Patients treated with single-session SRS for a NFPA were included in this retrospective, multicenter study. Tumor control and new pituitary dysfunction were evaluated using Cox analysis and Kaplan-Meier curves., Results: A total of 869 patients (male 476 [54.8%], median age at SRS 52.5 years [Interquartile range (IQR): 18.9]) were treated using a median margin dose of 14Gy (IQR: 4) for a median tumor volume of 3.4 cc (IQR: 4.3). With a median radiological follow-up of 3.7 years (IQR: 4.8), volumetric tumor reduction occurred in 451 patients (51.9%), stability in 364 (41.9%) and 54 patients (6.2%) showed tumor progression.The probability of tumor control was 95.5% (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 93.8-97.3) and 88.8% (95%CI: 85.2-92.5) at 5 and 10 years, respectively. A margin dose >14 Gy was associated with tumor control (Hazard Ratio [HR]:0.33, 95% CI: 0.18-0.60, P < 0.001). The probability of new hypopituitarism was 9.9% (95% CI: 7.3-12.5) and 15.3% (95% CI: 11-19.4) at 5 and 10 years, respectively. A maximum point dose >10 Gy in the pituitary stalk was associated with new pituitary hormone deficiency (HR: 3.47, 95% CI: 1.95-6.19). The cumulative probability of new cortisol, thyroid, gonadotroph, and growth hormone deficiency was 8% (95% CI: 3.9-11.9), 8.3% (95% CI: 3.9-12.5), 3.5% (95% CI: 1.7-5.2), and 4.7% (95% CI: 1.9-7.4), respectively at 10 years., Conclusions: SRS provides long-term tumor control with a 15.3% risk of hypopituitarism at 10 years., (© The Author(s) 2023. Fasciolosis is caused by parasites of the genus Fasciola, affecting animals and humans worldwide. In South America, the disease is a result of infection with Fasciola hepatica and although animal infections are more frequently reported, the full extent of the impact on human health due to underdiagnosis remains uncertain. This study analyzed changes in land use and the distribution of F. hepatica in bovine livers in Brazil over 18 years. Data on land use and land cover were collected from the Mapbiomas Project. Data on 414,481,963 slaughtered cattle and condemned livers due to F. hepatica infection were obtained from 4,433 municipalities. Joinpoint analysis was used to study the time series, and the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model was utilized to explore the behavior of F. hepatica infection. In the North, pasture areas significantly increased (P = 0.000001), while forested areas decreased (P = 0.000001). The midwestern and northern regions concentrated the highest number (>290 million) of cattle slaughtered in Brazil. More than 2 million bovine livers were infected by F. hepatica. The infected cattle originated from 194 municipalities in 2002, increasing to 747 in 2020. We consider that the changes in land use and intense cattle transportation may have caused the expansion of F. hepatica. The SIR model analyzed the spread of the disease looking at all six biomes: Caatinga, Amazon Forest, Cerrado, Pantanal, Atlantic Forest, and Pampa. Objective: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is used for the treatment of residual/recurrent nonfunctional pituitary adenoma (NFPA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors related to long-term tumor control and delayed endocrinopathies following SRS., Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study included patients with recurrent/residual NFPA treated with single-fraction SRS; they were then divided into two arms. The first arm included patients with at least 5 years of radiographic follow-up and all patients with local tumor progression. The second arm included patients with at least 5 years of endocrinological follow-up and all patients who developed endocrinopathy. Study endpoints were tumor control and new or worsening hypopituitarism after SRS and were analyzed using Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier methodology., Results: There were 360 patients in the tumor control arm (median age 52.7 [IQR 42.9-61] years, 193 [53.6%] males) and 351 patients in the hypopituitarism arm (median age 52.5 [IQR 43-61] years, 186 [53.0%] males). The median follow-up in the tumor control evaluation group was 7.95 (IQR 5.7-10.5) years. Tumor control rates at 5, 8, 10, and 15 years were 93% (95% CI 90%-95%), 87% (95% CI 83%-91%), 86% (95% CI 82%-90%), and 69% (95% CI 59%-81%), respectively. The median follow-up in the endocrinopathy evaluation group was 8 (IQR 5.9-10.7) years. Pituitary function preservation rates at 5, 8, 10, and 15 years were 83% (95% CI 80%-87%), 81% (95% CI 77%-85%), 78% (95% CI 74%-83%), and 71% (95% CI 63%-79%), respectively. A margin dose > 15 Gy (HR 0.8, 95% CI 0.7-0.9; p < 0.001) and a delay from last resection to SRS > 1 year (HR 0.9, 95% CI 0.7-0.9; p = 0.04) were significant factors related to tumor control in multivariable analysis. A maximum dose to the pituitary stalk ≤ 10 Gy (HR 1.1, 95% CI 1.09-1.2; p < 0.001) was associated with pituitary function preservation. New visual deficits after SRS occurred in 7 (1.94%) patients in the tumor control group and 8 (2.3%) patients in the endocrinopathy group. Other new cranial nerve deficits post-SRS occurred in 4 of 160 patients with data in the tumor control group and 3 of 140 patients with data in the endocrinopathy group., Conclusions: SRS affords favorable and durable tumor control for the vast majority of NFPAs. Post-SRS hypopituitarism occurs in a minority of patients, but this risk increases with time and warrants long-term follow-up.

Parafalcine and parasagittal (PFPS) are common locations for meningiomas. Surgical resection for these tumors, the first-line treatment, poses challenges due to their proximity to critical structures. This systematic review investigates the use of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) as a treatment for PFPS meningiomas, aiming to elucidate its safety and efficacy. The review adhered to PRISMA guidelines. Searches were conducted on MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane. Inclusion criteria involved studies on SRS for PFPS meningiomas, reporting procedure outcomes and complications. Tumors were presumed or confirmed to be WHO grade 1. Data was systematically extracted. Meta-analysis was performed where applicable. The review included data from eight studies, 821 patients with 878 lesions. Tumor control was achieved in greater than 80% of cases. Adverse radiation effects were reported in 7.3% of them. Recurrence and further surgical approach were observed in 17.1% and 9.2% of cases, respectively. Symptom improvement was noted in 33.2% of patients. Edema occurred in approximately 25.1% of patients. A subgroup of 283 patients had upfront SRS, achieving tumor control in approximately 97% of such cases. SRS is a safe and effective treatment for PFPS meningiomas, both as an adjuvant therapy and as an upfront treatment for often smaller tumors. Post-SRS edema can typically be managed medically and usually does not require further surgical intervention. Further studies should provide more specific data on PFPS meningiomas. The use of single and hypofractionated SRS for larger volume PFPS meningiomas should be more explored to better define the risks and benefits., (© 2024. Knowledge about paternal-effect-genes (PEGs) (genes whose expression in the progeny is influenced by paternal factors present in the sperm) in fish is very limited. To explore this issue, we used milt cryopreservation as a specific challenge test for sperm cells, thus enabling selection amidst cryo-sensitivity. We created two groups of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) as a model - eggs fertilized either with fresh (Fresh group) or cryopreserved (Cryo group) milt from the same male followed by phenotypic-transcriptomic examination of consequences of cryopreservation in obtained progeny (at larval stages). Most of the phenotypical observations were similar in both groups, except the final weight which was higher in the Cryo group. Milt cryopreservation appeared to act as a "positive selection" factor, upregulating most PEGs in the Cryo group. Transcriptomic profile of freshly hatched larvae sourced genes involved in the development of visual perception and we identified them as PEGs. Consequently, larvae from the Cryo group exhibited enhanced eyesight, potentially contributing to more efficient foraging and weight gain compared to the Fresh group. Cancer-related pain is a common and debilitating condition that can significantly affect the quality of life of patients. Opioids, NSAIDs, and antidepressants are among the first-line therapies, but their efficacy is limited or their use can be restricted due to serious side effects. Neuromodulation and lesioning techniques have also proven to be a valuable instrument for managing refractory pain. For patients who have exhausted all standard treatment options, hypophysectomy may be an effective alternative treatment. We conducted a comprehensive systematic review of the available literature on PubMed and Scielo databases on using hypophysectomy to treat refractory cancer-related pain. Data extraction from included studies included study design, treatment model, number of treated patients, sex, age, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score, primary cancer site, lead time from diagnosis to treatment, alcohol injection volume, treatment data, and clinical outcomes. Statistical analysis was reported using counts (N, %) and means (range). The study included data from 735 patients from 24 papers treated with hypophysectomy for refractory cancer-related pain. 329 cancer-related pain patients were treated with NALP, 216 with TSS, 66 with RF, 55 with Y90 brachytherapy, 51 with Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GK), and 18 with cryoablation. The median age was 58.5 years. The average follow-up time was 8.97 months. Good pain relief was observed in 557 out of 735 patients, with complete pain relief in 108 out of 268 patients. Pain improvement onset was observed 24 h after TSS, a few days after NALP or cryoablation, and a few days to 4 weeks after GK. Complications varied among treatment modalities, with diabetes insipidus (DI) being the most common complication. Although mostly forgotten in modern neurosurgical practice, hypophysectomy is an attractive option for treating refractory cancer-related pain after failure of traditional therapies. Background: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a cost-effective option for treating refractory persistent spinal pain syndrome type-2 (PSPS-2). For patients with extensive spine instrumentation including the thoraco-lumbar junction, percutaneous placement of SCS leads is usually not an option being paddle leads typically implanted anterograde. Paddle lead placement will be particularly challenging in more complex cases when the instrumentation covers the targeted level. To overcome this barrier, we studied using a retrograde approach to reach the sweet spot, facilitate the placement, and reduce associated risks., Objectives: To study the use of retrograde SCS paddle as a placement method to optimize the spinal cord target and reduce the risks of conventional placement in complex cases., Study Design: Case series and technical note., Methods: We present three cases of thoracic retrograde SCS paddle lead placement cases, detailing patient selection, operative technique, and outcome. All the cases had extensive instrumentation to the thoraco-lumbar spine, and one had additional spinal canal stenosis. The surgical procedure entailed a retrograde midthoracic inter-laminar approach, flavectomy, and caudal placement of the paddle lead with intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) guidance for functional midline determination., Results: All the cases had a successful lead placement over the sweet spot without complications. The same approach was used to decompress a focal spinal stenosis in one case. One case had significantly improved pain and hence underwent a pulse generator implant. The other cases had non-satisfactory pain control and were explanted., Limitations: These case description could guide technical procedural steps, however, a larger number of such cases would be needed to describe further technical nuances., Conclusions: We demonstrated that placing SCS paddle leads via retrograde midthoracic approach with IONM guidance is safe. The use of residues from coffee production to obtain biochar is a sustainable approach, which aims to minimize the environmental impact of these materials. In this study, the effect of adding coffee straw biochar on the physiological quality of lettuce and sorghum seeds was investigated. Thus, the objective of this work was to study the effect of adding different concentrations of coffee biochar in the substrate composition on the physiological quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) seeds. The experimental design used was completely randomized, with five concentrations of biochar (0; 7.5; 15; 30 and 60%), conducted with four replications of 25 seeds. The use of biochar in the concentrations studied does not provide an increase in the average germination percentage and vigor of lettuce and sorghum seeds. The increase in the concentration of biochar caused less seed vigor, suggesting a toxic effect. For seed germination, there was no significant difference between lettuce and sorghum species, regardless of treatment. For the germination speed index, sorghum seeds have higher means, except for the treatment with the addition of 15% coffee straw biochar. Lettuce seeds have higher shoot length averages, except for treatment with 100% commercial substrate. The sorghum seeds have higher mean root length and dry mass than lettuce, regardless of the treatment.

Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting the first and second motor neurons. Forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) have conventionally served as indicators of respiratory muscle strength. Recently, FEV1Q (FEV1 divided by the sex-specific first percentile values of absolute FEV1 in adults with lung disease) has been suggested as a predictor of mortality. While FVC has been utilized as a prognostic factor, FEV1Q has not yet been examined., Methods: This retrospective unicenter study evaluated FEV1Q as a predictor of mortality in ALS patients, comparing its predictive efficacy with other measurements, including FEV1, FVC, sniff nasal inspiratory pressure, and maximal inspiratory pressure. The study utilized univariate analysis for each variable employing the Cox proportional hazards model to determine the statistical significance and predictive power of each measurement., Results: Forty-five patients were included, female predominant (60%) and an average age at diagnosis of 69.2 ± 11 years. Almost all (95%) met the criteria for non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and initiated (93%) during the study period, a mean of 137 days after diagnosis. The mortality rate observed was 57%, occurring at a median of 398 days post-diagnosis. On average, patients underwent 1.7 pulmonary function tests, revealing a decline in various parameters, including FEV1, FEV1Q, and FVC. However, only FEV1Q was a statistically significant predictor of mortality (p < 0.0083) in a Cox regression analysis. A negative coefficient for FEV1Q indicated that higher values were associated with a reduced mortality risk, with an average FEV1Q of 2.68 observed at the time of death., Conclusion: FEV1Q emerged as the only statistically significant predictor of mortality among the evaluated respiratory measurements in ALS patients. This study is the first to focus on applying FEV1Q in the clinical evaluation of ALS, marking an initial step in understanding its potential role in patient follow-up. In 2020/2021, several European brown hare syndrome virus (EBHSV) outbreaks were recorded in European hares (Lepus europaeus) from Catalonia, Spain. Recombination analysis combined with phylogenetic reconstruction and estimation of genetic distances of the complete coding sequences revealed that 5 strains were recombinants. The recombination breakpoint is located within the non-structural protein 2C-like RNA helicase (nucleotide position ~ 1889). For the genomic fragment upstream of the breakpoint, a non-pathogenic EBHSV-related strain (hare calicivirus, HaCV; GII.2) was the most closely related sequence; for the rest of the genome, the most similar strains were the European brown hare syndrome virus (EBHSV) strains recovered from the same 2020/2021 outbreaks, suggesting a recent origin. While the functional impact of the atypical recombination breakpoint remains undetermined, the novel recombinant strain was detected in different European brown hare populations from Catalonia, located 20-100 km apart, and seems to have caused a fatal disease both in juvenile and adult animals, confirming its viability and ability to spread and establish infection. This is the first report of a recombination event involving HaCV and EBHSV and, despite the recombination with a non-pathogenic strain, it appears to be associated with mortality in European brown hares, which warrants close monitoring., (© 2024. Background: The experience of patients with brain metastases treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) may shape attitudes towards salvage therapy. Furthermore, physician attitudes towards salvage therapy may differ based on specialty and experience. Our objective is to compare physician attitudes and patient experiences with SRS., Methods: Eligible patients with brain metastases treated with one course of SRS or fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) without whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) in the definitive or postoperative setting at a single institution were surveyed from 11/2021 to 11/2022 regarding their perspectives on salvage therapy. A separate 11-question multi-disciplinary physician survey was distributed to residents, fellows and attendings at seven additional academic institutions in the US. Chi-square test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to assess differences., Results: A total of 30 patients and 88 physicians were surveyed. Most patients reported being satisfied or very satisfied with initial SRS/FSRT (90%). When given an option between WBRT or SRS for salvage treatment, all patients favored SRS. The physicians consisted of radiation oncologists (69.3%), neurosurgeons (19.3%), medical oncologists (8.0%), and neuro-oncologists (3.4%). Most physicians were confident or very confident in their ability to discuss the risks and benefits of SRS for brain metastases (78.9%), but this was significantly lower if the patient had received prior SRS (56.6%, P<.001). The loss or failure of an organ/tissue stands as one of the healthcare system's most prevalent, devastating, and costly challenges. Strategies for neural tissue repair and regeneration have received significant attention due to their particularly strong impact on patients' well-being. Many research efforts are dedicated not only to control the disease symptoms but also to find solutions to repair the damaged tissues. Neural tissue engineering (TE) plays a key role in addressing this problem and significant efforts are being carried out to develop strategies for neural repair treatment. In the last years, active materials allowing to tune cell-materials interaction are being increasingly used, representing a recent paradigm in TE applications. Among the most important stimuli influencing cell behavior are the electrical and mechanical ones. In this way, materials with the ability to provide this kind of stimuli to the neural cells seem to be appropriate to support neural TE. In this scope, this review summarizes the different biomaterials types used for neural TE, highlighting the relevance of using active biomaterials and electrical stimulation. Purpose: Three generic claims-based algorithms based on the Illness Classification of Diseases (10th revision- ICD-10) codes, French Long-Term Illness (LTI) data, and the Diagnosis Related Group program (DRG) were developed to identify retirees with cancer using data from the French national health insurance information system (Système national des données de santé or SNDS) which covers the entire French population. The present study aimed to calculate the algorithms' performances and to describe false positives and negatives in detail., Methods: Between 2011 and 2016, data from 7544 participants of the French retired self-employed craftsperson cohort (ESPrI) were first matched to the SNDS data, and then toFrench population-based cancer registries data, used as the gold standard. Performance indicators, such as sensitivity and positive predictive values, were estimated for the three algorithms in a subcohort of ESPrI., Results: The third algorithm, which combined the LTI and DRG program data, presented the best sensitivities (90.9%-100%) and positive predictive values (58.1%-95.2%) according to cancer sites. The majority of false positives were in fact nearby organ sites (e.g., stomach for esophagus) and carcinoma in situ. Most false negatives were probably due to under declaration of LTI., Conclusion: Validated algorithms using data from the SNDS can be used for passive epidemiological follow-up for some cancer sites in the ESPrI cohort., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)
