"Los Títulos de Ebtún" is a corpus of documents written in Yucatec Maya and Spanish throughout the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries (1561-1869). These administrative texts include land titles, land purchases, sale records, legal petitions regarding the delimitation of boundaries, and boundary surveys. They were produced in a legal dispute involving the Ebtún community with their Mayan and Spanish neighbors. The origin of this lawsuit was the reducción por congregación policy and the reorganization of the geopolitics of the Yucatecan peninsula through the displacement and relocation of a large part of its population. The analysis of this corpus allows us to illuminate the territorial strategies that the inhabitants of Ebtún developed throughout the colonial period, as well as to elaborate hypotheses regarding the different regimes of rights and land tenure prevailing.
