Agricultural environments are becoming increasingly contaminated with plastic pollution. Plastics in the environment can also provide a unique habitat for microbial biofilm, termed the 'plastisphere', which can also support the persistence of human pathogens such as Salmonella. Human enteric Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium can enter agricultural environments via flooding or from irrigation with contaminated water. Using soil mesocosms we quantified the ability of S. Typhimurium to persist on microplastic beads in two agriculturally relevant soils, under ambient and repeat flood scenarios. S. Typhimurium persisted in the plastisphere for 35 days in both podzol and loamy soils; while during multiple flood events was able to survive in the plastisphere for up to 21 days. S. Typhimurium could dissociate from the plastisphere during flooding events and migrate through soil in leachate, and importantly could colonise new plastic particles in the soil, suggesting that plastic pollution in agricultural soils can aid S. Typhimurium persistence and facilitate further dissemination within the environment. The potential for increased survival of enteric human pathogens in agricultural and food production environments due to plastic contamination poses a significant public health risk, particularly in potato or root vegetable systems where there is the potential for direct contact with crops. Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment are the major subject of concern across the globe as they jeopardize not only aquatic life but human health as well. MPs are potentially competent to adsorb various micropollutants (heavy metals), bacterial communities, and biofilm formation which comply with the requirement of efficient sorption of antibiotics and transfer of ARGs. MPs adsorb antibiotics through physicochemical interactions, leading to the formation of biofilm-enriched bacteria on the surfaces of MPs that further enhances the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and facilitates their dispersal. Therefore, this review recapitulates the interactive forces responsible for antibiotics sorption on MPs and also the intricate relationship between MPs, antibiotics, and microbial hosts of ARGs. Furthermore, the role of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which serve as a formidable connecting link between MPs and the ecosystem, is discussed in relation to dissemination of antibiotics, ARGs, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) to get a clear perception of the contribution of WWTPs in drawing together MPs with antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs. Abstract Background Antibiotics and microplastics are two major aquatic pollutants that have been associated to antibiotic resistance selection in the environment and are considered a risk to human health. However, little is known about the interaction of these pollutants at environmental concentrations and the response of the microbial communities in the plastisphere to sub-lethal antibiotic pollution. Here, we describe the bacterial dynamics underlying this response in surface water bacteria at the community, resistome and mobilome level using a combination of methods (next-generation sequencing and qPCR), sequencing targets (16S rRNA gene, pre-clinical and clinical class 1 integron cassettes and metagenomes), technologies (short and long read sequencing), and assembly approaches (non-assembled reads, genome assembly, bacteriophage and plasmid assembly). Results Our results show a shift in the microbial community response to antibiotics in the plastisphere microbiome compared to surface water communities and describe the bacterial subpopulations that respond differently to antibiotic and microplastic pollution. The plastisphere showed an increased tolerance to antibiotics and selected different antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Several metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) derived from the antibiotic-exposed plastisphere contained ARGs, virulence factors, and genes involved in plasmid conjugation. These include Comamonas, Chryseobacterium, the opportunistic pathogen Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and other MAGs belonging to genera that have been associated to human infections, such as Achromobacter. The abundance of the integron-associated ciprofloxacin resistance gene aac(6’)-Ib-cr increased under ciprofloxacin exposure in both freshwater microbial communities and in the plastisphere. Regarding the antibiotic mobilome, although no significant changes in ARG load in class 1 integrons and plasmids were observed in polluted samples, we identified three ARG-containing viral contigs that were integrated into MAGs as prophages. Conclusions This study illustrates how the selective nature of the plastisphere influences bacterial response to antibiotics at sub-lethal selective pressure. The microbial changes identified here help define the selective role of the plastisphere and its impact on the maintenance of environmental antibiotic resistance in combination with other anthropogenic pollutants. Plastics are offering a new niche for microorganisms colonizing their surface, the so-called "plastisphere," in which diversity and community structure remain to be characterized and compared across ocean pelagic regions. Here, we compared the bacterial diversity of microorganisms living on plastic marine debris (PMD) and the surrounding free-living (FL) and organic particle-attached (PA) lifestyles sampled during the Tara expeditions in two of the most plastic polluted zones in the world ocean, i.e., the North Pacific gyre and the Mediterranean Sea. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis confirmed that PMD are a new anthropogenic ocean habitat for marine microbes at the ocean-basin-scale, with clear niche partitioning compared to FL and PA lifestyles. At an ocean-basin-scale, the composition of the plastisphere communities was mainly driven by environmental selection, rather than polymer types or dispersal effect. A plastisphere "core microbiome" could be identified, mainly dominated by Rhodobacteraceae and Cyanobacteria. Predicted functions indicated the dominance of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur metabolisms on PMD that open new questions on the role of the plastisphere in a large number of important ecological processes in the marine ecosystem. Microplastics (MPs) are of increasing concern due to their role as reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogens. To date, few studies have explored the influence of anthropogenic activities on ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) within various riverine MPs, in comparison to their natural counterparts. Here an in-situ incubation was conducted along heavily anthropogenically-impacted Houxi River to characterize the geographical pattern of antibiotic resistome, mobilome and pathogens inhabiting MPs- and leaf-biofilms. The metagenomics result showed a clear urbanization-driven profile in the distribution of ARGs, MGEs and pathogens, with their abundances sharply increasing 4.77 to 19.90 times from sparsely to densely populated regions. The significant correlation between human fecal marker crAssphage and ARG (R2 = 0.67, P=0.003) indicated the influence of anthropogenic activity on ARG proliferation in plastisphere and natural leaf surfaces. And mantel tests and random forest analysis revealed the impact of 17 socio-environmental factors, e.g., population density, antibiotic concentrations, and pore volume of materials, on the dissemination of ARGs. Partial least squares-path modeling further unveiled that intensifying human activities not only directly boosted ARGs abundance but also exerted a comparable indirect impact on ARGs propagation. Furthermore, the polyvinylchloride plastisphere created a pathogen-friendly habitat, harboring higher abundances of ARGs and MGEs, while polylactic acid are not likely to serve as vectors for pathogens in river, with a lower resistome risk score than that in leaf-biofilms. This study highlights the diverse ecological risks associated with the dissemination of ARGs and pathogens in varied MPs, offering insights for the policymaking of usage and control of plastics within urbanization.

Upon entering the marine environment, plastics are colonized by a plethora of microorganisms to form a plastisphere, influencing the fate and transport of the plastic debris and the health of marine ecosystems. The assembly of marine plastisphere is generally believed to be dominated by stochastic processes. However, it remains elusive whether microbial interaction in the assembly of plastisphere microbial communities is conserved or not. We analyzed the plastisphere microbiomes of 137 plastic debris samples from intertidal zones at different geographical locations and habitats (seagrass, coral, mangrove, beach, and open ocean) and compared them with the surrounding sediment and seawater microbiomes. Microbial community structures of the plastisphere from different locations were more similar to each other but differed substantially from the surrounding sediment and water microbiomes, implying a common mechanism of plastisphere assembly. We used different machine learning algorithms (Multinomial Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, Decision Trees, Random Forest, and Artificial Neural Networks) to classify plastic debris samples with high sensitivity based on the microbiome composition. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic phototrophic organisms such as green algae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria, were found to be enriched on the plastic surfaces. Network analysis revealed the central role of the phototrophic organisms in the formation and sustenance of the plastispheres. We found that phototrophs served as core members interacting strongly with heterotrophic organisms in marine plastisphere, irrespective of the sampling location, habitats, and polymer types. This would explain the stochastic assembly of the plastisphere along with conserved properties driven by the phototrophs in the surrounding environment. Our results highlight the importance of phototrophic organisms in shaping the marine plastisphere microbial communities.

Frequently used protective items during the pandemics are prepared from plastics products, such as polypropylene, polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyethylene, and polyester. Globally more than 57 million pounds of personal protective equipment along with other biomedical plastic waste are entering into the oceans per annum. Lots of economic benefits can be obtained by recycling the polymeric wastes by converting them into useful products through, reduced manufacture cost, bio converted products, and cleaner environment by developing a circular waste management model. Personal protective equipment's are prepared from different plastic products and the outer most surface of these free-floating plastics presents in the aquatic environment serve as colonization support to diverse microbial populations known as plastisphere. Microbial colonization starts with an initial attachment under different environmental conditions, subsequently by developing a permanent association on the plastic surface. The community structure of microorganisms in the plastisphere can be significantly influenced by the depth of water in the aquatic ecosystem where microplastics present and the nutrients availability. As microorganisms have been deeply investigated for their role in the biodegradation of several pollutants, the present review article focuses on microbial diversity on plastisphere in the aquatic ecosystem, the underlying mechanism of colonization, and their potential role in microplastic degradation. Background: Plastic waste is a global environmental issue that impacts the well-being of humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. Microplastic contamination has been previously reported at Kung Wiman Beach, located in Chanthaburi province along with the Eastern Gulf of Thailand. Our research aimed to study the microbial population of the sand and plastisphere and isolate microorganisms with potential plastic degradation activity. Methods: Plastic and sand samples were collected from Kung Wiman Beach for microbial isolation on agar plates. The plastic samples were identified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Plastic degradation properties were evaluated by observing the halo zone on mineral salts medium (MSM) supplemented with emulsified plastics, including polystyrene (PS), polylactic acid (PLA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and bis (2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET). Bacteria and fungi were identified by analyzing nucleotide sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, respectively. 16S and ITS microbiomes analysis was conducted on the total DNA extracted from each sample to assess the microbial communities. Results: Of 16 plastic samples, five were identified as polypropylene (PP), four as polystyrene (PS), four as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), two as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and one sample remained unidentified. Only 27 bacterial and 38 fungal isolates were found to have the ability to degrade PLA or BHET on MSM agar. However, none showed degradation capabilities for PS or PVC on MSM agar. Notably, Planococcus sp. PP5 showed the highest hydrolysis capacity of 1.64 ± 0.12. The 16S rRNA analysis revealed 13 bacterial genera, with seven showing plastic degradation abilities: Salipiger, Planococcus, Psychrobacter, Shewanella, Jonesia, Bacillus, and Kocuria. This study reports, for the first time of the BHET-degrading properties of the genera Planococcus and Jonesia. Additionally, The ITS analysis identified nine fungal genera, five of which demonstrated plastic degradation abilities: Aspergillus, Penicillium, Peacilomyces, Absidia, and Cochliobolus. Microbial community composition analysis and linear discriminant analysis effect size revealed certain dominant microbial groups in the plastic and sand samples that were absent under culture-dependent conditions. Furthermore, 16S and ITS amplicon microbiome analysis revealed microbial groups were significantly different in the plastic and sand samples collected. Conclusions: We reported on the microbial communities found on the plastisphere at Kung Wiman Beach and isolated and identified microbes with the capacity to degrade PLA and BHET. The increasing number of plastic particles in the environment gives rise to a unique ecological niche called the plastisphere, which is characterized by a dynamic assemblage of microorganisms comprising autotrophs, heterotrophs, predators, and pathogens. This paper reviews the formation, characteristics, and factors influencing the terrestrial and aquatic plastisphere. The terrestrial and aquatic plastisphere forms when hitchhiking microorganisms, often bacteria, in the environment adhere to the surfaces of plastic particles and alter the surface properties of the particles for subsequent colonization of increasingly tightly clinging microorganisms. The terrestrial plastisphere is not as mobile as the aquatic plastisphere and is defined by the characteristics of the soil anchoring it. The microorganisms on the plastisphere are often defined by the dominant microorganisms in the surroundings, particularly those of the phyla Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Ciliophora, Ochrophyta, and Chlorophyta. However, the compositions and dominant microbial species on different plastic surfaces vary widely as they change with time, plastic properties, and biotic and abiotic environmental factors. Temporal changes in the plastisphere are due to succession. Plastic properties, particularly the type, surface properties, size, color, degree of aging, and chemical leaching, also affect the composition of the plastisphere. Biotic environmental factors comprising the dominant ambient microorganisms and interspecies interactions, together with the abiotic ones, including pH, temperature, nutrient availability, soil properties, salinity, and light, significantly shape the plastisphere. Although accumulating evidence indicates that endangered animals suffer from plastic pollution, this has been largely overlooked. Here, we explored the bacteria and eukaryotes living in the plastics gathered from the natural habitat of the highly endangered crocodile lizard. The results demonstrated that the bacterial and eukaryotic communities on plastics formed a unique ecosystem that exhibited lower diversity than those in the surrounding water and soil. However, microbes displayed a more complex and stable network on plastic than that in water or soil, implying unique mechanisms of stabilization. These mechanisms enhanced their resilience and contributed to the provision of stable ecological services. Eukaryotes formed a simpler and smaller network than bacteria, indicating different survival strategies. The bacteria residing on the plastics played a significant role in carbon transformation and sequestration, which likely impacted carbon cycling in the habitat. Furthermore, microbial exchange between plastics and the crocodile lizard was observed, suggesting that plastisphere serves as a mobile gene bank for the exchange of information, including potentially harmful substances. Overall, microbes on plastic appear to significantly impact the crocodile lizard and its natural habitat via various pathways. These results provided novel insights into risks evaluation of plastic pollution and valuable guidance for government efforts in plastic pollutant control in nature reserves.

Plastic pollution in coastal areas, particularly in subtropical and tropical regions, remains a pervasive environmental issue. Marine plastic debris provides an artificial surface that rapidly accumulates a dynamic microbial biofilm upon entering the marine ecosystem. Especially the early stages of colonization are critical in shaping the microbial community. This study investigates the early microbial colonization, in less than a week, on five different plastic polymers in Caribbean coastal waters through 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. We discovered shared bacterial taxa among the various plastic polymers and sampling timepoints, with dominant orders being Flavobacteriales, Rhodobacterales, Rhizobiales, and Pseudomonadales. Statistical analysis confirmed significant differences in community composition between the two sampling points, with polystyrene exhibiting a distinct microbial community on day 6 compared to polyethylene, polypropylene, and nylon. We found the same for polyethylene compared to nylon and polyethylene-terephthalate. Further examination identified 47 genera responsible for these differences, primarily belonging to the phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. Our data indicate an influence of both environmentally related stochastic processes and plastic-related specific factors during early colonization. Interestingly, we noticed an increase in the relative abundance of hydrocarbon and potentially plastic-degrading bacteria (PDB) from 12.4 to 34.5 % between the first and sixth day, suggesting their vital role in shaping the epiplastic community. Notably, some identified PDB have been reported to degrade the specific polymers studied, thus the monitored increase in relative abundance supports their role in plastic degradation. However, more research is required to fully understand their functioning and potential role in the epiplastic community. Our study provides insights into the prokaryotic colonization of marine plastics in the Caribbean basin, where to date studies have been limited despite high pollution rates.

Plastic pollution is increasingly found in agricultural environments, where it contaminates soil and crops. Microbial biofilms rapidly colonise environmental plastics, such as the plastic mulches used in agricultural systems, which provide a unique environment for microbial plastisphere communities. Human pathogens can also persist in the plastisphere, and enter agricultural environments via flooding or irrigation with contaminated water. In this study we examined whether Salmonella Typhimurium and Vibrio cholerae can be transferred from the plastisphere on plastic mulch to the surface of ready-to-eat crop plants, and subsequently persist on the leaf surface. Both S. Typhimurium and V. cholerae were able to persist for 14 days on fragments of plastic mulch adhering to the surface of leaves of both basil and spinach. Importantly, within 24 h both pathogens were capable of dissociating from the surface of the plastic and were transferred onto the surface of both basil and spinach leaves. This poses a further risk to food safety and human health, as even removal of adhering plastics and washing of these ready-to-eat crops would not completely remove these pathogens. As the need for more intensive food production increases, so too does the use of plastic mulches in agronomic systems. Therefore, there is now an urgent need to understand the unquantified co-pollutant pathogen risk of contaminating agricultural and food production systems with plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution in aquatic environments poses significant concerns due to its potential to serve as a refuge for aquatic pathogens. However, the role of plastic surfaces and microbial biofilm interfaces in facilitating pathogen development remains poorly understood. In this study, a microcosm setup was employed to investigate the interactions between plastics and the microbial community and examine the differences in bacterial community composition and potential pathogen occurrences between the plastisphere-biofilm and surrounding seawater. Community composition analysis combined with SEM observations over time indicated that biofilm extracellular polymeric substance formation over 14 days had a link with the relative abundance and succession patterns of pathogen taxa. Colony clusters were observed on biofilms from day 7 and coincided with higher bacterial pathogen dominance. On day 14, pathogen abundance overall decreased with a potentially degrading biofilm. Pseudomonas and Pseudoalteromonas were the dominant potential pathogen groups observed in the microcosm. When further subjected to chemical treatment as an imposed environmental stress over time, biofilm-associated Psuedoalteromonas sharply increased in abundance after three days of exposure, but quickly diminished by 14 days in favor of genera such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Staphylococcus. These results suggest that environmental plastisphere-biofilms can promote the early selection, enrichment, and spread of pathogenic bacteria in the aquatic environment and could be later worsened under chemical and long-term pressure. This study provided new insights into the succession of pathogens in plastisphere biofilms, contributing to the understanding of pathogen risks involved in emerging plastisphere biofilms in light of global plastic pollution. Microplastics (MPs) are a significant threat to soils. However, there is scarce information on the impact of MPs on soil properties, particularly in volcanic ashderived soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of polyamide (PA) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) MPs on the biological and chemical characteristics of an Andisol from central Chile. Twenty-one parameters were evaluated, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total phosphorus (TP), available phosphorous (AP), available nitrogen (AN), inorganic nitrogen forms (NH4 +, NO2 - and NO3), carbohydrates (CHO), polyphenols (POLs), humic substances, soil basal respiration (SBR) and activities of soil enzymes such as dehydrogenase, ß-glucosidase, phosphatase and urease. For this, a microcosm was set up in clay pots in an incubation chamber at 21°C and 60% soil moisture, with the addition of PA and LDPE at doses of 1% and 3% w/w; a control treatment consisting of microcosm without MPs was also included. After 6 weeks of incubation, PA addition resulted in an increase in TOC and NH4 + by up to 32% and 26%, respectively, and a decrease in NO3 - by 22%. AP decreased by 15%-19% with the addition of PA and LDPE. Similarly, acid phosphatase and ß-glucosidase activities decreased by 15% and 26% with PA and LDPE, respectively. The distance-based linear model (DistLM) was used to analyse relationships in chemical and biological datasets. The analysis revealed that TOC and TP were primary components in the best model for predicting microbiological changes (R2 = .469, AICs = 16.026), indicating that MPs accumulation affects soil carbon cycling and P content. Overall, the results show that MPs addition alters soil chemical and microbiological properties in Andisols, with varying effects depending on the type and dose of MPs, with the highest dose (3%) producing the most marked negative effects. Microplastic pollution has become a global environmental challenge, with significant impacts on ecosystems and human health. Microbes have emerged as a promising tool in the combating against microplastic contamination. However, the complex relationship between microbes and microplastics presents both opportunities and challenges, leading to a nuanced understanding of their applications in degradation. This paper provides critical insights into the multifaceted roles of different microorganisms in microplastic degradation. It begins by highlighting the ‘good’ aspects, where several strains of microorganisms show the potential to break down microplastics through enzymatic activities and the formation of biofilms. Conversely, the ‘bad’ aspects of microbial involvement in microplastic degradation are examined. Microorganisms can facilitate the transport and bioaccumulation of microplastics in various ecosystems, potentially exacerbating their harmful effects. The ‘ugly’ side of microplastic degradation includes the production of harmful byproducts during microbial breakdown, raising concerns about secondary pollution and toxicity. The concept of plastisphere is discussed in this context, focusing on the phototrophs, photoheterotrophs and heterotrophs. Novel technologies involving microbial degradation of microplastics are also explained. The work emphasises the need for a comprehensive and balanced approach regarding the application of microorganisms in microplastic degradation and remediation.

Plastic waste has become a significant global ecological concern due to its substantial harmful impacts. They are eventually colonized and transformed by diverse microbial communities known as the ‘‘plastisphere”. Only a limited group of microbes have been identified so far due to the prevalence of non-culturable strains that inhabit polymer substrates. We investigated the community diversity and predictive functionality of the plastisphere microbiota using a high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach to unveil their plastic degrading potential. Samples were collected from four different plastic-enriched disposal sites adjacent to Kolkata, West Bengal, India, followed by processing, gDNA extraction, library preparation, and sequencing. The most prevalent phyla were Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, and Verrucomicrobia. The functional profiling revealed that genes associated with metabolism, cellular processes, and signalling were most prevalent, followed by poorly characterized information storage and processing. In this study, we predicted the existence of a beneficial microbiome associated with bioremediation and plastic degradation, which suggests the potential utilization of plastics as primary carbon sources. Our findings also highlighted the existence of promising microbial enzymes associated with the biodegradation of several plastic substrates.Furthermore, our research unveiled the enriched distribution of beneficial microbiome in the studied metagenome, which offers a diverse prospect. This investigation establishes a connection between the structure of microbial communities and diverse genes actively engaged in the biodegradation of plastic waste within plastic disposal sites. These beneficial degraders can be investigated further for broad-spectrum applications in plastic bioremediation. Subsequent explorations of their plastic degrading enzymes will provide profound contributions to plastic pollution mitigation.

With a growing number of research reports on microplastics (MPs), there is increasing concern regarding MPs-induced contamination in soil ecological systems. Notwithstanding, the interaction between the plastisphere and rhizosphere microbial hotspots in soil-plant systems, as well as the diversity and composition of plastisphere microbial communities in such systems, remain largely unexplored. This study evaluated the response of rhizosphere bacterial communities to MPs at three growth stages of pepper and examined the bacterial communities present on MPs (plastisphere). The 16 S rRNA revealed that, under the stress of MPs, the Chao1 and Shannon index of the pepper soil bacterial community decreased. Meanwhile the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota was decreased, and that of Proteobacteria was increased. Furthermore, the plastisphere serves as a unique microbial habitat (niche) that recruits the colonization of specific bacterial groups, including potential plastic-degrading bacteria and potential pathogens (e.g., Massilia and Pseudomonas). Simultaneously, the plastisphere recruits specific bacteria that may impact the rhizosphere soil bacterial communities, thus indirectly affecting plant growth. Functional prediction using PICRUSt2 revealed higher activity in the plastisphere for Metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides, Human diseases, and Xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism. Notably, the human diseases metabolic pathway exhibited increased activity, suggesting potential ecological risks associated with pathogens. These results highlighted that the plastisphere serves as a unique microbial habitat (niche) in the soil ecological systems, recruiting specific bacteria and potentially interfering with the surrounding soil microbial community, thereby influencing the functional characteristics of the soil ecological systems.

• Poly(butylene succinate)(PBS) biodegrades very slowly in marine environments. • PBS with 16-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (16HHD) and PCL enhances marine biodegradability. • PBS with 16HHD and PCL shows 90.4 % and 83.2 % biodegradability in marine conditions. One potential solution for reducing marine pollution from plastic waste is to replace conventional plastics with biodegradable alternatives. However, most chemosynthetically biodegradable aliphatic polyesters, such as poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), exhibit extremely slow biodegradation rates in marine environments. To address this problem, we present a novel method to enhance the marine biodegradability of PBS by blending it with 10 wt.% of 16-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (16HHD) and poly(ε -caprolactone) (PCL). The weight loss rates of the PBS samples with 16HHD and PCL were 18.4- and 7.8-times faster than that of pristine PBS. Scanning electron micrographs of PBS blended with 16HHD and PCL after oceanic incubation for four months showed a rough surface, suggesting that enzymatic degradation occurred. Additionally, unlike pristine PBS, samples with 16HHD and PCL demonstrated biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) biodegradabilities of 90.4 % and 83.2 %, respectively, under marine conditions. Analysis of the microbial community of BOD testing using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing indicated that the addition of 16HHD and PCL changed the microbial community compared to pristine PBS. Plastic waste is found with increasing frequency in the environment, in low- and middle-income countries. Plastic pollution has increased concurrently with both economic development and rapid urbanisation, amplifying the effects of inadequate waste management. Distinct microbial communities can quickly colonise plastic surfaces in what is collectively known as the 'plastisphere'. The plastisphere can act as a reservoir for human pathogenic bacteria, including Salmonella enterica sp. (such as S. Typhimurium), which can persist for long periods, retain pathogenicity, and pose an increased public health risk. Through employing a novel mesocosm setup, we have shown here that the plastisphere provides enhanced protection against environmental pressures such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation and allows S. Typhimurium to persist at concentrations (>1 × 103 CFU/ml) capable of causing human infection, for up to 28 days. Additionally, using a Galleria Mellonella model of infection, S. Typhimurium exhibits greater pathogenicity following recovery from the UV-exposed plastisphere, suggesting that the plastisphere may select for more virulent variants. This study demonstrates the protection afforded by the plastisphere and provides further evidence of environmental plastic waste acting as a reservoir for dangerous clinical pathogens. Microplastics (MPs) with different physical-chemical properties are considered as vectors for the propagation of microbes in aquatic environments. It remains unclear how plastic types impact on the plastisphere and whether different MPs spread microbes more rapidly than natural materials in microbes across distinct water bodies as proposed previously. We used in-situ incubation to investigate the microbes attached on MPs of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), versus that on two natural microcarriers (quartz sands and bamboo) during the travel from aquaculture ponds with impacted by fish farming to adjacent freshwater stream. The results showed that the microbial communities on the carriers were shaped not only by environmental conditions, which were primary determinants but also by carrier types. All the tested plastics did not carry more microbes than the natural carriers during the journey. The biofilm community composition on PVC is distinct from that on PE and PP MPs and natural carriers. The plastisphere of PE and PP kept microbial proportions as natural materials did but PVC retained less than nature materials. Bamboo carried more potential pathogens than plastic polymers and quartz. The results indicated that the communities of plastisphere is polymer-type dependent, and, compared with the natural materials, MPs did not show enhanced propagation of microbes, including pathogens, cross distinct environments. The microbial community colonized on microplastics (MPs), known as the 'plastisphere', has attracted extensive concern owing to its environmental implications. Coastal salt marshes, which are crucial ecological assets, are considered sinks for MPs. Despite their strong spatial heterogeneity, there is limited information on plastisphere across diverse environments in coastal salt marshes. Herein, a 1-year field experiment was conducted at three sites in the Yancheng salt marsh in China. This included two sites in the intertidal zone, bare flat (BF) and Spartina alterniflora vegetation area (SA), and one site in the supratidal zone, Phragmites australis vegetation area (PA). Petroleum-based MPs (polyethylene and expanded polystyrene) and bio-based MPs (polylactic acid and polybutylene succinate) were employed. The results revealed significant differences in bacterial community composition between the plastisphere and sediment at all three sites examined, and the species enriched in the plastisphere exhibited location-specific characteristics. Overall, the largest difference was observed at the SA site, whereas the smallest difference was observed at the BF site. Furthermore, the MP polymer types influenced the composition of the bacterial communities in the plastisphere, also exhibiting location-specific characteristics, with the most pronounced impact observed at the PA site and the least at the BF site. The polybutylene succinate plastisphere bacterial communities at the SA and PA sites were quite different from the plastispheres from the other three MP polymer types. Co-occurrence network analyses suggested that the bacterial community network in the BF plastisphere exhibited the highest complexity, whereas the network in the SA plastisphere showed relatively sparse interactions. Null model analyses underscored the predominant role of deterministic processes in shaping the assembly of plastisphere bacterial communities across all three sites, with a more pronounced influence observed in the intertidal zone than in the supratidal zone. Microorganisms can colonize to the surface of microplastics (MPs) to form biofilms, termed "plastisphere", which could significantly change their physiochemical properties and ecological roles. However, the biofilm characteristics and the deep mechanisms (interaction, assembly, and biogeochemical cycles) underlying plastisphere in wetlands currently lack a comprehensive perspective. In this study, in situ biofilm formation experiments were performed in a park with different types of wetlands to examine the plastisphere by extrinsic addition of PVC MPs in summer and winter, respectively. Results from the spectroscopic and microscopic analyses revealed that biofilms attached to the MPs in constructed forest wetlands contained the most abundant biomass and extracellular polymeric substances. Meanwhile, data from the high-throughput sequencing showed lower diversity in plastisphere compared with soil bacterial communities. Network analysis suggested a simple and unstable co-occurrence pattern in plastisphere, and the null model indicated increased deterministic process of heterogeneous selection for its community assembly. Based on the quantification of biogeochemical cycling genes by high-throughput qPCR, the relative abundances of genes involving in carbon degradation, carbon fixation, and denitrification were significantly higher in plastisphere than those of soil communities. Emerging evidence indicates that micro- and macro-plastics present in water can support a diverse microbial community, including potential human pathogens (e.g., bacteria, viruses). This interaction raises important concerns surrounding the role and suitability of current bathing water regulations and associated pathogen exposure risk within beach environments. In response to this, we critically evaluated the available evidence on plastic-pathogen interactions and identified major gaps in knowledge. This review highlighted the need for a conceptual shift in risk management at public beaches recognising: (i) interconnected environmental risks, e.g., associations between microbial compliance parameters, potential pathogens and both contemporary and legacy plastic pollution; and (ii) an appreciation of risk of exposure to plastic co-pollutants for both water and waterside users. We present a decision-making framework to identify options to manage plastic-associated pathogen risks alongside short- and longer-term research priorities. This advance will help deliver improvements in managing plastic-associated pathogen risk, acknowledging that human exposure potential is not limited to only those who engage in water-based activity. Microbiological degradation of polymers offers a promising approach for mitigating environmental plastic pollution. This study (i) elucidated the diversity and structure of bacterial microbiomes from distinct environments (landfill soil, sewage sludge, and river water) characterized by specific physicochemical parameters, and (ii) utilized environment-derived microbial cultures enriched with microplastics (MPs) to investigate the degradation of polymers and identify culturable bacterial strains contributing to the plastisphere. We found that alpha diversity was notably higher in river water (∼20%) compared to landfill soil and sewage sludge. Dominant phyla included Pseudomonadota in sewage sludge (39.1%) and water (23.7%), while Actinomycetota prevailed in soil (38.5%). A multistage experiment, involving successive subcultures of environmental microbiomes exposed to polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polycarbonate (PC), and polylactic acid (PLA), facilitated the assessment of MPs degradation processes. Analysis of carbonyl indices CIs and FTIR spectra revealed substantial structural changes in the treatment PVC-landfill soil, as well as in PLA- and PC-sludge enriched cultures. Further, using enriched cultures as a source of microorganisms, the study obtained 17 strains of plastic degraders from landfill soil, 14 from sewage sludge, and 6 from river water. Remarkably, similar bacterial genera were isolated across environmental microbiomes regardless of the MPs substrate used in enriched cultures. Among the 37 identified strains, Pseudomonadota predominated (64.86%) and were accompanied by Bacteroidota (16.22%), Actinomycetota (13.51%), and Bacillota (5.41%). This study highlights the complex relationship between microbiome diversity and the biodegradation efficiency of plastics, showing the potential for using microbial communities in the plastic pollution management. Disposed plastics in oceans provide a substrate to which microbes can adhere and structure the biofilm, namely the plastisphere. In this study, we showed that the mesoplastic density-based separation, routinely used in quantification assays, is detrimental to studying the microbiome diversity and ecology as it underestimates the real microbial diversity within these samples. Based on SEM and microbiome observations, we propose that chemically fixing samples before density separation preserves cellular diversity (2.32-fold change) and richness (1.12-fold change) that would be naturally lost due to the current methodology. OTUs assigned to Gram-negative bacterial species are the most negatively affected by omitting fixation and polymer composition was not decisive in shifting microbiome composition. Urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) represent key point-source discharges of microplastics (MP) into the environment, however, little is known about the microbial carrying capacity of plastics travelling through them. The purpose of this study was to quantify the number of cells that become associated with MP at different locations within a WWTP, and to assess differences in microbiome communities. We conducted a field experiment incubating low density polyethylene (LDPE) MP beads in WWTP influent and effluent, as well as tracking free floating beads during passage in wastewater from a large municipal hospital to an urban WWTP, where they were subsequently recovered. Using two cell counting methods - automated flow cytometric true absolute cell counts and indirect cell quantification via protein content based on a model E. coli cell - we quantified cell attachment to LDPE beads. LDPE associated counts ranged from 350 × 103 cells cm−2 after incubation in wastewater effluent, and 990 × 103 cells cm−2 after incubation in wastewater influent. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to determine the bacterial community structure of the plastic-associated microbiomes. Our results showed that distinct bacterial communities developed on the LDPE MP following exposure to each wastewater type. Influent (untreated) wastewater LDPE-associated microbiomes were dominated by Bacillota whereas the microbes that attached in wastewater effluent (tertiary treated) were dominated by Pseudomonadota. In conclusion, this study provides clear evidence that microplastics migrating through the sewer network and WWTP rapidly accumulate microbiomes with unique microbial community structures varying from sewage influent to effluent. To date, few studies have explored the influence of anthropogenic activities on ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) within various riverine MPs, in comparison to their natural counterparts. Here an in-situ incubation was conducted along heavily anthropogenically-impacted Houxi River to characterize the geographical pattern of antibiotic resistome, mobilome and pathogens inhabiting MPs- and leaf-biofilms. The metagenomics result showed a clear urbanization-driven profile in the distribution of ARGs, MGEs and pathogens, with their abundances sharply increasing 4.77 to 19.90 times from sparsely to densely populated regions. The significant correlation between human fecal marker crAssphage and ARG (R2 = 0.67, P =0.003) indicated the influence of anthropogenic activity on ARG proliferation in plastisphere and natural leaf surfaces. And mantel tests and random forest analysis revealed the impact of 17 socio-environmental factors, e.g., population density, antibiotic concentrations, and pore volume of materials, on the dissemination of ARGs. Partial least squares-path modeling further unveiled that intensifying human activities not only directly boosted ARGs abundance but also exerted a comparable indirect impact on ARGs propagation. Furthermore, the polyvinylchloride plastisphere created a pathogen-friendly habitat, harboring higher abundances of ARGs and MGEs, while polylactic acid are not likely to serve as vectors for pathogens in river, with a lower resistome risk score than that in leaf-biofilms. The assembly of marine plastisphere is generally believed to be dominated by stochastic processes. However, it remains elusive whether microbial interaction in the assembly of plastisphere microbial communities is conserved or not. We analyzed the plastisphere microbiomes of 137 plastic debris samples from intertidal zones at different geographical locations and habitats (seagrass, coral, mangrove, beach, and open ocean) and compared them with the surrounding sediment and seawater microbiomes. Microbial community structures of the plastisphere from different locations were more similar to each other but differed substantially from the surrounding sediment and water microbiomes, implying a common mechanism of plastisphere assembly. We used different machine learning algorithms (Multinomial Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, Decision Trees, Random Forest, and Artificial Neural Networks) to classify plastic debris samples with high sensitivity based on the microbiome composition. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic phototrophic organisms such as green algae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria, were found to be enriched on the plastic surfaces. Network analysis revealed the central role of the phototrophic organisms in the formation and sustenance of the plastispheres. We found that phototrophs served as core members interacting strongly with heterotrophic organisms in marine plastisphere, irrespective of the sampling location, habitats, and polymer types. This would explain the stochastic assembly of the plastisphere along with conserved properties driven by the phototrophs in the surrounding environment. We quantified algal biomass, bacterial and algal biodiversity (16S and 18S rRNA), and metabolic traits of the community growing on the surface of different plastic polymers incubated within rivers of the Lower Mekong Basin. The rivers selected have different ecological characteristics but are similar regarding their high degree of plastic pollution. We examined the effects of plastics colonized with biofilms on ecosystem production, community dark respiration, and the epiplastic community's capability to influence nitrogen, phosphorus, organic carbon, and oxygen in water. Finally, we present conceptual models to guide our understanding of plastic pollution within freshwaters. Our findings showed limited microalgal biomass and bacterial dominance, with potential pathogens present. The location significantly influenced community composition, highlighting the role of environmental conditions in shaping community development. When assessing the effects on ecosystem productivity, our experiments showed that biofouled plastics led to a significant drop in oxygen concentration within river water, leading to hypoxic/anoxic conditions with subsequent profound impacts on system metabolism and the capability of influencing biogeochemical cycles. Scaling our findings revealed that plastic pollution may exert a more substantial and ecosystem-altering impact than initially assumed, particularly in areas with poorly managed plastic waste. Plastic pollution in the ocean is a global environmental hazard aggravated by poor management of plastic waste and growth of annual plastic consumption. Microbial communities colonizing the plastic's surface, the plastisphere, has gained global interest resulting in numerous efforts to characterize the plastisphere. However, there are insufficient studies deciphering the underlying metabolic processes governing the function of the plastisphere and the plastic they reside upon. Here, we collected plastic and seawater samples from Ashmore Reef in Australia to examine the planktonic microbes and plastic associated biofilm (PAB) to investigate the ecological impact, pathogenic potential, and plastic degradation capabilities of PAB in Ashmore Reef, as well as the role and impact of bacteriophages on PAB. Using high-throughput metagenomic sequencing, we demonstrated distinct microbial communities between seawater and PAB. Similar numbers of pathogenic bacteria were found in both sample types, yet plastic and seawater select for different pathogen populations. Virulence Factor analysis further illustrated stronger pathogenic potential in PAB, highlighting the pathogenicity of environmental PAB. Furthermore, functional analysis of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) metabolic pathways revealed xenobiotic degradation and fatty acid degradation to be enriched in PABs. In addition, construction of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAG) and functional analysis further demonstrated the presence of a complete Polyethylene (PE) degradation pathway in multiple Proteobacteria MAGs, especially in Rhodobacteriaceae sp. Additionally, we identified viral population presence in PAB, revealing the key role of bacteriophages in shaping these communities within the PAB. The Plastisphere is a novel niche whereby microbial communities attach to plastic debris, including microplastics. These communities can be distinct from those found in the surrounding environment or those attached to natural substrates and may serve as a reservoir of both pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria. Owing to the frequent omission of appropriate comparator particles (e.g. natural substrates) in previous studies, there is a lack of empirical evidence supporting the unique risks posed by microplastics in terms of enrichment and spread of AMR pathogens. This study investigated selective colonization by a sewage community on environmentally sampled microplastics with three different polymers, sources and morphologies, alongside natural substrate (wood), inert substrate (glass) and free-living/planktonic community controls. Culture and molecular methods (quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)) were used to ascertain phenotypic and genotypic AMR prevalence, respectively, and multiplex colony PCR was used to identify extra-intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPECs). From this, polystyrene and wood particles were found to significantly enrich AMR bacteria, whereas sewage-sourced bio-beads significantly enriched ExPECs. Polystyrene and wood were the least smooth particles, and so the importance of particle roughness on AMR prevalence was then directly investigated by comparing the colonization of virgin vs artificially weathered polyethylene particles. Surface weathering did not have a significant effect on the AMR prevalence of colonized particles. Our results suggest that the colonization of plastic and non-plastic particles by AMR and pathogenic bacteria may be enhanced by substrate-specific traits.

Exploring plastic bacterial community succession is a crucial step in analyzing and predicting the ecological assembly processes of the plastisphere and its associated environmental impacts. However, microbial biofilm development and niche differentiation during plastic bacterial community succession have rarely scarcely considered. Here, we assessed the differences between three microplastics (MPs) and two natural polymers in terms of biofilm development and niche properties during bacterial community succession, and identified a genus of MPs-degrading bacteria with strong competitive potential in the plastisphere. MPs biofilm development exhibits secondary succession characteristics, whereas natural polymer biofilms persist during the primary succession stage. During succession in plastic bacterial communities, the relationship between nutrient resources and microbial competition was reflected in a positive correlation between species competition and niche breadth, which contradicted the common belief that increased nutrient availability leads to reduced competition. Furthermore, the co-occurrence network revealed that specialists were species with greater competitive potential within the plastisphere. Additionally, the MPs-degrading Exiguobacterium genus represented a key taxon in the plastisphere. Soil microbiomes drive many soil processes and maintain the ecological functions of terrestrial ecosystems. Microplastics (MPs, size < 5 mm) are pervasive emerging contaminants worldwide. However, how MPs affect soil microbial activity has not been well elucidated. This review article first highlights the effects of MPs on overall soil microbial activities represented by three soil enzymes, i.e., catalase, dehydrogenase, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDAse), and explores the underlying mechanisms and influencing factors. Abundant evidence confirms that MPs can change soil microbial activities. However, existing results vary greatly from inhibition to promotion and non-significance, depending on polymer type, degradability, dose, size, shape, additive, and aging degree of the target MPs, soil physicochemical and biological properties, and exposure conditions, such as exposure time, temperature, and agricultural practices (e.g., planting, fertilization, soil amendment, and pesticide application). MPs can directly affect microbial activities by acting as carbon sources, releasing additives and pollutants, and shaping microbial communities via plastisphere effects. Smaller MPs (e.g., nanoplastics, 1 to < 1000 nm) can also damage microbial cells through penetration. Indirectly, MPs can change soil attributes, fertility, the toxicity of co-existing pollutants, and the performance of soil fauna and plants, thus regulating soil microbiomes and their activities. Plastics are invading nearly all ecosystems on earth, acting as emerging repositories for toxic organic pollutants and thereby imposing substantial threats to ecological integrity. The colonization of plastics by microorganisms, forming the plastisphere, has garnered attention due to its potential influence on biogeochemical cycles. However, the capability of plastisphere microorganisms to attenuate organohalide pollutants remains to be evaluated. This study revealed that the plastisphere, collected from coastal ecosystems, harbors unique microbiomes, while the natural accumulation of organohalide pollutants on plastics may favor the proliferation of organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB). Laboratory tests further elucidated the high potential of plastisphere microbiota to reductively dehalogenate a variety of organohalide pollutants. Notably, over 70% tested plastisphere completely debrominated tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to nonhalogenated products, whereas polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were converted to lower congeners under anaerobic conditions. Dehalococcoides , Dehalogenimonas , and novel Dehalococcoidia populations might contribute to the observed dehalogenation based on their growth during incubation and positive correlations with the quantity of halogens removed. Intriguingly, large fractions of these OHRB populations were identified in a lack of the currently known TBBPA/PBDEs/PCBs reductive dehalogenase (RDase) genes, suggesting the presence of novel RDase genes. Microbial community analyses identified organohalides as a crucial factor in determining the composition, diversity, interaction, and assembly of microbes derived from the plastisphere. Collectively, this study underscores the overlooked roles of the plastisphere in the natural attenuation of persistent organohalide pollutants and sheds light on the unignorable impacts of organohalide compounds on the microbial ecology of the plastisphere.

Although accumulating evidence indicates that endangered animals suffer from plastic pollution, this has been largely overlooked. Here, we explored the bacteria and eukaryotes living in the plastics gathered from the natural habitat of the highly endangered crocodile lizard. The results demonstrated that the bacterial and eukaryotic communities on plastics formed a unique ecosystem that exhibited lower diversity than those in the surrounding water and soil. However, microbes displayed a more complex and stable network on plastic than that in water or soil, implying unique mechanisms of stabilization. These mechanisms enhanced their resilience and contributed to the provision of stable ecological services. Eukaryotes formed a simpler and smaller network than bacteria, indicating different survival strategies. The bacteria residing on the plastics played a significant role in carbon transformation and sequestration, which likely impacted carbon cycling in the habitat. Furthermore, microbial exchange between plastics and the crocodile lizard was observed, suggesting that plastisphere serves as a mobile gene bank for the exchange of information, including potentially harmful substances. Overall, microbes on plastic appear to significantly impact the crocodile lizard and its natural habitat via various pathways. Microbial communities, including bacteria, diatoms, and fungi, colonize plastic surfaces, forming biofilms known as the "plastisphere." Recent research has revealed that plastispheres also host a wide range of viruses, sparking interest in microbial ecology and virology. This shared habitat allows viruses to replicate, interact, infect, and spread, potentially impacting the environment and human health. Consequently, viruses attached to microplastics are now recognized to have broad effects on cellular and immune responses. However, the ecology and implications of viruses hosted in plastisphere habitats remain poorly understood, highlighting their fundamental importance as a subject of study. This review explores various pathways for virus attachment to plastispheres, factors influencing these interactions, their impacts within plastisphere and host-associated environments, and associated issues. It also summarizes current research and identifies knowledge gaps. We anticipate that this paper will help improve our predictive understanding of plastisphere viruses in natural settings and emphasizes the need for more research in real-world environments to advance the field. The accumulation of microplastics in reservoirs due to river damming has drawn considerable attention due to their potential impacts on elemental biogeochemical cycling at the watershed scale. However, the effects of plastisphere communities on the sulfur cycle in the large deep-water reservoir remain poorly understood. Here, we collected microplastics and their surrounding environmental samples in the water and sediment ecosystems of Xiaowan Reservoir and found a significant spatiotemporal pattern of microplastics and sulfur distribution in this Reservoir. Based on the microbial analysis, plastic-degrading taxa (e.g., Ralstonia , Rhodococcus) involved in the sulfur cycle were enriched in the plastisphere of water and sediment, respectively. Typical thiosulfate oxidizing bacteria Limnobacter acted as keystone species in the plastisphere microbial network. Sulfate, oxidation reduction potential and organic matter drove the variations of the plastisphere. Environmental filtration significantly affected the plastisphere communities, and the deterministic process dominated the community assembly. Furthermore, predicted functional profiles related to sulfur cycling, compound degradation and membrane transport were significantly enriched in the plastisphere. Overall, our results suggest microplastics as a new microbial niche exert different effects in water and sediment environments, and provide insights into the potential impacts of the plastisphere on the sulfur biogeochemical cycle in the reservoir ecosystem. Pollution generated by plastic waste has brought an environmental problem characterized by the omnipresence of smaller pieces of this material known as microplastics (MP). This issue was addresses by collecting samples with 250 μm pore size nets in two marine-coastal sectors of Southwestern Caribbean Sea during two contrasting seasons. Higher concentrations were found in rainy season than in dry season, reaching respectively 1.72 MP/m3 and 0.22 MP/m3. Within each sector, there were differences caused firstly by localities of higher concentrations of semi-closed water bodies localities during rainy season (Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta and La Caimanera marsh), and secondly by lower concentrations of localities with less influenced of flow rates during dry season (Salamanca and Isla Fuerte). Moreover, the lowest concentration in dry season corresponding to La Caimanera marsh reflects how the community environmental management might decrease MP pollution. In both sectors and seasons, the particles of 0.3 mm (0.3–1.4 mm) size class dominated over those of 1.4 mm (1.4–5.0 mm) (reaching each respectively 1.33 MP/m3 and 0.39 MP/m3), with a dominance of fibers, except in the rainy season in Magdalena, where they were films. Using the FTIR technique, polypropylene was identified as the most abundant polymer in both sectors. The composition of the assemblage of microorganisms attached to microplastics presented higher richness and differed from that of free-living planktonic microbes. The most abundant members of the plastisphere were proteobacteria whose major representation was the pathogenic genus Vibrio , while the cyanobacteria dominated in seawater samples. The term "Plastisphere" refers to the biofilm layer naturally formed by microorganisms attaching to plastic surfaces. This layer possesses the capability to adsorb persistent organic and inorganic pollutants, particularly trace metals, which are the focus of this research study. Immersion experiments were concurrently conducted in five locations spanning four European countries (France, Ireland, Spain, and Italy) utilising eight distinct polymers. These immersions, repeated every three months over a one-year period, aimed to evaluate the baseline bioaccumulation of 12 trace metals. The study underscores the intricate nature of metal bioaccumulation, influenced by both micro-scale factors (such as polymer composition) and macro-scale factors (including geographical site and seasonal variations). Villefranche Bay in France exhibited the lowest metals bioaccumulation, whereas Naples in Italy emerged as the site where bioaccumulation was often the highest for the considered metals. Environmental risk assessment was also conducted in the study. The lightweight nature of certain plastics allows them to be transported across significant distances in the ocean. Consequently, evaluating trace metal concentrations in the plastisphere is imperative for assessing potential environmental repercussions that plastics, along with their associated biota, may exert even in locations distant from their point of emission. Plastic pollution is increasingly found in agricultural environments, where it contaminates soil and crops. Microbial biofilms rapidly colonise environmental plastics, such as the plastic mulches used in agricultural systems, which provide a unique environment for microbial plastisphere communities. Human pathogens can also persist in the plastisphere, and enter agricultural environments via flooding or irrigation with contaminated water. In this study we examined whether Salmonella Typhimurium and Vibrio cholerae can be transferred from the plastisphere on plastic mulch to the surface of ready-to-eat crop plants, and subsequently persist on the leaf surface. Both S. Typhimurium and V. cholerae were able to persist for 14 days on fragments of plastic mulch adhering to the surface of leaves of both basil and spinach. Importantly, within 24 h both pathogens were capable of dissociating from the surface of the plastic and were transferred onto the surface of both basil and spinach leaves. This poses a further risk to food safety and human health, as even removal of adhering plastics and washing of these ready-to-eat crops would not completely remove these pathogens. As the need for more intensive food production increases, so too does the use of plastic mulches in agronomic systems. This article discusses the use of droplet-based technology to study the potential phenotypic effect of microplastics (MPs) on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Microplastics and nanoplastics provide a micro-environment called the "plastisphere" for bacteria to form biofilms, which exacerbates the threat of AMR. The study used droplets containing Escherichia coli and cefotaxime antibiotic, with or without polystyrene microspheres. The results showed that the presence of microspheres in the droplets may enhance the resistance of E. coli against cefotaxime, possibly due to the observed tendency for clumping (indicating biofilm formation) of E. coli when microspheres are present. The authors suggest that further experiments with different antibiotics and types/sizes of microplastics are needed to better understand the potential of microplastics to enhance AMR. This study used correlation analyses to examine the microbial mechanisms linking microplastics and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) fluxes in 18 typical lakes in Wuhan city. The microplastic abundances were 502 ± 212 items/m3 in the surface water and 305 ± 216 items/kg in dry sediments. The microplastics were predominantly black and fiber shaped in both surface water and sediments. The N2O flux was positively correlated with total phosphorus (p < 0.01), suspended particles (p < 0.01), total nitrogen (p < 0.05), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (p < 0.01) in surface water. nirK/nosZ I was negatively correlated with the N 2 O flux and positively correlated with dissolved N 2 O concentration in surface water (p < 0.05). The microplastic abundance in surface water was positively correlated with nosZ II in water (p < 0.01) and nirK / nosZ I in sediment (p < 0.001). The microplastics in sediments were negatively correlated with nirK / nosZ I in water (p < 0.001) and positively correlated with nirS in sediment (p < 0.05). The predominant plastisphere denitrifiers in this study were nirS -type in sediments and nirK -type in surface water. The predominant denitrifier in surface water was Flavobacterium , where it had far higher relative abundances compared to sediments. The co-occurrence network between nitrifiers, denitrifiers, and water quality indexes implied that denitrifiers competed strongly in sediments, while they cooperated in surface water. Looking at the whole microbial community, the competitive and cooperative relationships were more complex in the sediment samples. The N 2 O flux was positively correlated with the plastic degradation function in sediment (p < 0.05), implying the plastisphere was a significant contributor.
