Purpose: The study aimed to investigate the association between urinary incontinence (UI) severity, pelvic pain, and sensory‐motor function in older women with stroke. Methods: A cross‐sectional prospective study was carried out with 102 older women individuals with stroke. Barthel Index (BI), Incontinence Impact Questionnaire Short Form (IIQ‐7), Urogenital Distress Inventory (UDI‐6), Pelvic Pain Impact Questionnaire (PPIQ), Somatosensory Amplification Scale (SASS), and Somatic Sensitivity Scale (SeSS) were used for clinical measurements. Results: Partial correlational analyses with age, stroke duration, and BMI as covariates revealed a moderate positive correlation between SASS and IIQ‐7 (r = 0.315, p < 0.001) and UDI‐6 (r = 0.376, p < 0.001). On the other hand, there was a strong positive correlation between SASS and PPIQ (r = 0.522, p < 0.001). SeSS had a low positive correlation with IIQ‐7 (r = 0.198, p < 0.05) and UDI‐6 (r = 0.203, p < 0.05). In addition, there was a positive and moderate correlation between SeSS and PPIQ (r = 0.384, p < 0.001). Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed causality of SASS (R2 = 0.381, p < 0.001) and SeSS (R2 = 0.167, p < 0.001) with PPIQ. Conclusions: Increased abnormal sensory sensitivity is associated with increased pelvic pain levels in women with stroke. Clinicians should consider sensory abnormalities, especially pain, within the scope of UI in women with stroke. Our results provide preliminary essential data for sensory and pain awareness during pelvic rehabilitation in stroke patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are often used to treat low back pain (LBP) due to lumbosacral radiculopathy as well as LBP without a clear component of radiculopathy, in some cases. While it is increasingly recognized that psychosocial factors are associated with pain outcomes, few studies have assessed the contribution of these factors to common pain interventions like ESIs. This study aimed to summarize the scope and nature of how psychosocial factors are accounted for in research on ESIs for the treatment of LBP with or without lumbosacral radiculopathy and to identify gaps and recommendations for future research. A scoping review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis-Scoping Review Extension framework was conducted. Publications dated before September 2023 were searched in PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. Of the 544 records identified through database searching, a total of 51 studies cumulatively totaling 10,447 participants were included. Sample sizes ranged from 12 to 5,104 participants. Of the 51 included studies, only 10 (20%) analyzed and reported the relationship between at least one psychosocial variable and post-injection pain at any follow-up timepoint. The other 41 (80%) included no analyses examining ESI response as a function of psychosocial variables. Based on the studies that included analysis by psychosocial variables, poor psychosocial functioning appears to be associated with inferior treatments outcomes following ESI for back pain with or without lumbosacral radiculopathy. Relative to the vast body of literature on ESIs for LBP and lumbosacral radiculopathy, minimal attention has been directed to the influence of psychosocial factors on ESI treatment outcomes. Future research evaluating predictors of the effect of ESI on pain relief should include development of more comprehensive models containing modifiable psychosocial variables as predictors of ESI response. Background: Although health anxiety is broadly related to the overutilization of healthcare, limited research has examined this relation among individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs), or the extent to which racial/ethnic differences influence this relationship. Objectives: The purpose of the current study is to examine the moderating role of racial/ethnic minoritized background in the relationship between health anxiety and treatment utilization among individuals with SUDs. In the present study, patients with SUDs receiving residential treatment in Mississippi (N=118; 62% racial/ethnic minoritized status, 35.6% White) completed a measure of health anxiety and answered questions about past mental health, physical health, and substance use treatment. Regression models examined whether racial/ethnic minoritized status (White vs. racial/ethnic minoritized status) moderated the relation of health anxiety to treatment utilization among patients with SUDs. Treatment utilization was examined by asking whether participants had seen a doctor or mental health provider, engaged in substance use treatment, or alcohol treatment prior to their current treatment (dichotomous), as well as the number of times they had engaged in each treatment (physical health, mental health, substance use, and alcohol treatment) in the past year (continuous). Results: Results revealed that the facets of health anxiety involving concerns about pain and disease phobia were positively associated with treatment utilization, but only among racial/ethnic minoritized participants, with concerns about pain positively associated with self-reported physical health treatment utilization (OR=0.70, 95% CI=0.50; 0.97) and disease phobia positively associated with past mental health (B = 0.36, p = 0.023) and alcohol use treatment (B=-0.23, p=.009). Conversely, disease phobia was related to less prior alcohol use treatment among White participants (B=-0.23, p=.009). Conclusions: Overall, among patients in residential treatment for SUDs, racial/ethnic minoritized participants with SUDs reported more health anxiety compared to white participants, and certain facets of health anxiety (i.e., concerns about pain and worry about severe illness) were linked to heightened treatment utilization among racial/ethnic minoritized individuals.
