Powered ankle/foot prostheses aim to replicate the biomechanical function of the missing biological limb. Biomechanical analysis shows that while the ankle injects positive energy into the gait cycle, the toe joint dissipates energy. Yet virtually all powered ankle/foot prostheses use custom ankle actuators in combination with carbon fiber foot springs to imitate the function of the missing ankle/foot complex. Here we introduce a powered ankle and toe prosthesis with an underactuated mechanism. The underactuated mechanism connects the toe and ankle joints, providing biomechanically accurate torque and enabling mechanical energy recovery during gait. The proposed powered ankle/toe prothesis is the first device to match the weight, size, and build height of microprocessor-controlled prostheses.

Individuals with lower limb amputations show higher metabolic costs during ambulation than able-bodied individuals. This high metabolic cost may be explained by the inability of available passive prostheses to replicate the biomechanics of intact legs during walking. Powered prostheses promise to address this issue by imitating the power generation of intact legs. Several studies have investigated the effect of power generation and energy injection at the ankle joint in transtibial amputees. In contrast, no study has directly addressed knee power generation in transfemoral amputees. This study investigates the effect of knee power generation in late stance in one transfemoral amputee subject using a lightweight powered prosthesis. Experimental results suggest that injecting positive energy into the gait cycle at the knee level may improve gait ability by reducing effort.

The appropriate ergonomic design of a wearable robotic device is critical for the effectiveness of the device itself. In this paper we identified two key requirements for a structural ergonomics: the correct kinematic compatibility with the human limb and a comfortable and adaptable physical human-robot interface. We then show how the aforementioned requirements have been faced and implemented in the mechanical design of two wearable devices for elbow and hand rehabilitation, both developed at The BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant' Anna.

This work describes the neuro-robotics paradigm: the fusion of neuroscience and robotics. The fusion of neuroscience and robotics, called neuro-robotics, is fundamental to develop robotic systems to be used in functional support, personal assistance and neuro-rehabilitation. While usually the robotic device is considered as a "tool" for neuroscientific studies, a breakthrough is obtained if the two scientific competences and methodologies converge to develop innovative platforms to go beyond robotics by including novel models to design better robots. This paper describes three robotic platforms developed at the ARTS lab of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, implementing neuro-robotic design paradigm.
