China's paper industry development is rapid, but the recycling rate of China's waste paper has been low all the time. Meanwhile, material flow analysis can help determine the flow of waste paper, and life cycle assessment (LCA) is the methodological framework for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, present study integrates these two methods into the model construction of China's waste paper recycling decision system. Present study constructs a benchmark model of China's waste paper recycling decision system in 2017, focusing on the impact of nonstandard waste paper recycling on the economic and environmental benefits of China's domestic waste paper recycling system. This model construction is followed by sensitivity analysis of the relevant parameters affecting the efficiency of the waste paper recycling system. Finally, present study forecasts the system's economic benefits and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the context of integrating and regulating nonstandard recycling vendors. The results show that the economic benefit of China's waste paper recycling in 2017 is approximately 458.3 yuan/t and that the GHG emissions are 901.1 kgCO 2 eq. The standard recovery rate and nonstandard recovery acceptance rate will both have a significant impact on the system's economic benefits and improve the GHG emissions structure. In the context of integrating nonstandard recycling enterprises and individual recycling vendors, the economic benefits will rise to 3312.5 yuan/t in 2030, while GHG emissions will rise to 942.9 kgCO 2 eq. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), consisting mainly of methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O), have been constantly increasing and become a non-negligible contributor towards carbon neutrality. The precise evaluation of plant-specific GHG emissions, however, remains challenging. The current assessment approach is based on the product of influent load and emission factor (EF), of which the latter is quite often a single value with huge uncertainty. In particular, the latest default Tier 1 value of N 2 O EF, 0.016 ± 0.012 kg N2O - N kg TN , is estimated based on the measurement of 30 municipal WWTPs only, without involving any industrial wastewater. Therefore, to resolve the pattern of GHG emissions from industrial WWTPs, this work conducted a 14-month monitoring campaign covering all the process units at a full-scale industrial WWTP in Shanghai, China. The total CH 4 and N 2 O emissions from the whole plant were, on average, 447.7 ± 224.5 kg CO2-eq d -1 and 1605.3 ± 2491.0 kg CO2-eq d -1 , respectively, exhibiting a 5.2- or 3.9-times more significant deviation than the influent loads of chemical oxygen demand (COD) or total nitrogen (TN). The resulting EFs, 0.00072 kg CH4 kg COD -1 and 0.00211 kg N2O - N kg TN -1 , were just 0.36% of the IPCC recommended value for CH 4 , and 13.2% for N 2 O. Besides, the parallel anoxic-oxic (A/O) lines of this industrial WWTP were covered in two configurations, allowing the comparison of GHG emissions from different odor control setup. Globally, forest soils are considered as important sources and sinks of greenhouse gases (GHGs). However, most studies on forest soil GHG fluxes are confined to the topsoils (above 20 cm soil depths), with only very limited information being available regarding these fluxes in the subsoils (below 20 cm soil depths), especially in managed forests. This limits deeper understanding of the relative contributions of different soil depths to GHG fluxes and global warming potential (GWP). Here, we used a concentration gradient-based method to comprehensively investigate the effects of thinning intensity (15% vs. 35%) and nutrient addition (no fertilizer vs. NPK fertilizers) on soil GHG fluxes from the 0-40 cm soil layers at 10 cm depth intervals in a Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantation. Results showed that forest soils were the sources of CO 2 and N 2 O, but the sinks of CH 4 . Soil GHG fluxes decreased with increasing soil depth, with the 0-20 cm soil layers identified as the dominant producers of CO 2 and N 2 O and consumers of CH 4 . Thinning intensity did not significantly affect soil GHG fluxes. However, fertilization significantly increased CO 2 and N 2 O emissions and CH 4 uptake at 0-20 cm soil layers, but decreased them at 20-40 cm soil layers. This is because fertilization alleviated microbial N limitation and decreased water filled pore space (WFPS) in topsoils, while it increased WFPS in subsoils, ultimately suggesting that soil WFPS and N availability (especially NH 4 + -N) were the predominant regulators of GHG fluxes along soil profiles. Generally, there were positive interactive effects of thinning and fertilization on soil GHG fluxes. Moreover, the 35% thinning intensity without fertilization had the lowest GWP among all treatments. Quercus gilva, an evergreen tree species in Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis, is an ecologically and economically valuable species in subtropical regions of East Asia. Predicting the impact of climate change on potential distribution of Q. gilva can provide a scientific basis for the conservation and utilization of its genetic resources, as well as for afforestation. In this study, 74 distribution records of Q. gilva and nine climate variables were obtained after data collection and processing. Current climate data downloaded from WorldClim and future climate data predicted by four future climate scenarios (2040s SSP1-2.6, 2040s SSP5-8.5, 2060s SSP1-2.6, and 2060s SSP5-8.5) mainly based on greenhouse gases emissions of distribution sites were used in MaxEnt model with optimized parameters to predict distribution dynamics of Q. gilva and its response to climate change. The results showed that the predicted current distribution was consistent with natural distribution of Q. gilva, which was mainly located in Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guizhou, and Taiwan provinces of China, as well as Japan and Jeju Island of South Korea. Under current climate conditions, precipitation factors played a more significant role than temperature factors on distribution of Q. gilva, and precipitation of driest quarter (BIO17) is the most important restriction factor for its current distribution (contribution rate of 57.35%). Under future climate conditions, mean temperature of driest quarter (BIO9) was the essential climate factor affecting future change in potential distribution of Q. gilva. As the degree of climatic anomaly increased in the future, the total area of predicted distribution of Q. gilva showed a shrinking trend (decreased by 12.24%-45.21%) and Q. gilva would migrate to high altitudes and latitudes. Inspection, standing for top-down environmental management practices, also known as campaign-style governance, is used by central governments to lessen local environmental pollution. However, there is no causal evidence for carbon abatement. Employing staggered difference-in-differences (DiD), I find that inspected cities mitigate carbon intensity and carbon emissions by 3.72% and 2.34%, respectively, with economic significance. Conducting a triple difference strategy, I suggest the channels are the local people's congresses and political consultative conferences' proposals, government attention, environmental regulation, industrial structure, and green innovation. Also, the heterogeneous effects suggest that municipal party secretaries assigned to their birthplace, the older the party standing and age, and those with natural sciences majors, are more conducive to the inspection achieving carbon mitigation. An alternative DiD specification shows that the "look-back" inspection achieves sustained carbon reduction. Low-carbon cities (LCC) are conducive to low-carbon development and reshaping the urban economic growth model. However, it is still unknown whether it has a synergistic mitigation effect on other greenhouse gases (GHGs). In this study, a dataset comprising 283 Chinese cities spanning the period 2003 to 2019 is chosen. We employ spatial difference-in-difference (SDID) modeling to investigate both the impacts and mechanisms of LCC on GHG emissions performance. The results show that (1) LCC notably lowers local GHG emissions, enhances emission efficiency, and improves GHG emissions performance in neighboring cities within a 1000 km radius. (2) LCC indirectly enhances the GHG emissions performance of local and neighboring cities through energy intensity and green technology innovation. Notably, LCC boosts the local GHG emissions performance by industrial structure upgrading and resource allocation but harms the positive spillover effects on nearby cities due to the siphoning effect. (3) The effect and spatial impact of LCC on GHG emission performance is notably pronounced in eastern cities, non-resource cities, and key environmental protection areas. Monoculture is widely practiced to increase crop productivity, but long-term adaptation has drawbacks as it increases the depletion of soil nutrients and reduces soil quality, especially in dryland areas. Conversion from traditional maize monoculture to intercropping improves sustainable production. However, maize/peanut intercropping, especially rotation of planting strips impacts of maize/peanut intercropping in dryland on carbon (C) budgets and economic benefits remain unclear. In this study, a 5-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of maize/peanut intercropping with rotation of planting strips on soil health, indirect CO 2 -eq greenhouse gas emissions, and ecosystem C inputs. Four intercropping treatments viz. maize monoculture, peanut monoculture, maize/peanut intercropping, and maize/peanut rotation-intercropping were tested from 2018 to 2022. Maize/peanut rotation intercropping significantly improved the land equivalent ratio followed by intercropping and monoculture. Rotation-intercropping also improved economic benefits over intercropping and monoculture which were mainly associated with increased peanut yield where the border rows contributed the maximum, followed by the middle rows. Moreover, rotation-intercropping significantly increased the soil organic C and nitrogen (N) content. Rotation-intercropping decreased indirect CO 2 -eq greenhouse gas emissions and ecosystem C inputs by 3.11% and 18.04%, whereas increased ecosystem C outputs and net ecosystem C budget by 10.38% and 29.14%, respectively, over the average of monoculture. On average for intercropping and monoculture, rotation-intercropping increased ecosystem C emission efficiency for economic benefits by 51.94% and 227.27% in 2021 and 2022, respectively, showing the highest C utilization efficiency than other treatments. Excessive irrigation and nitrogen application have long seriously undermined agricultural sustainability in the North China Plain (NCP), leading to declining groundwater tables and intensified greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Developing low-input management practices that meet the growing food demand while reducing environmental costs is urgently needed. Here, we developed a novel nitrogen management strategy for a typical winter wheat-summer maize rotation system in the NCP under limited irrigation (wheat sowing irrigation only (W0) or sowing and jointing irrigation (W1)) and low nitrogen input (360 kg N ha -1 , about 70 % of traditional annual nitrogen input). Novel nitrogen management strategy promoted efficient nitrogen fertilizer uptake and utilization by both crops via optimization of nitrogen fertilizer allocation between the two crops, i.e., increasing nitrogen inputs to wheat (from 180 to 240 kg N ha -1 ) while reducing nitrogen inputs to maize (from 180 to 120 kg N ha -1 ). Three-year field study demonstrated that integrated management practices combining novel nitrogen management strategy with limited irrigation increased annual yields and PFPN by 1.9-5.7 %, and reduced TGE by 55-68 kg CO 2 -eq ha -1 and GHGI by 2.2-10.3 %, without any additional cost. With global population growth and climate change, food security and global warming have emerged as two major challenges to agricultural development. Plastic film mulching (PM) has long been used to improve yields in rain-fed agricultural systems, but few studies have focused on soil gas emissions from mulched rainfed potatoes on a long-term and regional scale. This study integrated field data with the Denitrification-Decomposition (DNDC) model to evaluate the impacts of PM on potato yields, greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions in rainfed agricultural systems in China. We found that PM increased potato yield by 39.7 % (1505 kg ha -1 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions by 15.4 % (123 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions by 47.8 % (1016 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 ), and global warming potential (GWP) by 38.9 % (1030 kg CO 2 eq ha -1 ), while NH 3 volatilization decreased by 33.9 % (8.4 kg NH 3 ha -1 ), and methane (CH 4 ) emissions were little changed compared to CK. Specifically, the yield after PM significantly increased in South China (SC), North China (NC), and Northwest China (NWC), with increases of 66.1 % (2429 kg ha -1 ), 44.1 % (1173 kg ha -1 ), and 43.6 % (956 kg ha -1 ) compared to CK, respectively. The increase in GWP and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI) under PM was more pronounced in the Northeast China (NEC) and NWC regions, with respective increases of 57.1 % and 60.2 % in GWP, 16.9 % and 10.3 % in GHGI. While in the Middle and Lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLYR) and SC, PM decreased GHGI with 10.2 % and 31.1 %, respectively. PM significantly reduced NH 3 emissions in all regions and these reductions were most significant in Southwest China (SWC), SCand MLYR, which were 41 %, 38.0 %, and 38.0 % lower than CK, respectively. In addition, climatic and edaphic variables were the main contributors to GHG and NH 3 emissions. In conclusion, it is appropriate to promote the use of PM in the MLYR and SC regions, because of the ability to increase yields while reducing environmental impacts (lower GHGI and NH 3 emissions). While research on carbon productivity is growing rapidly, the role of structural change in green transition remains unexplored due to the scarcity of firm-level emission data. This study addresses this gap by utilizing unique register-based greenhouse gas emission data from Finland's energy-intensive manufacturing firms for 2000-2019. Applying a structural change productivity decomposition, we break down the sector's carbon productivity and green total factor productivity into four components: contributions from non-switching continuing firms, industry-switching continuing firms, the effects of entry and exit, and resource allocation. The findings highlight the important role of structural change in the sector's productivity. Non-switching continuing firms emerged as the key drivers of both carbon and green total factor productivity growth. The contribution of entry and exit was negative during the financial crisis, while inefficient resource allocation significantly hindered productivity growth throughout the study period. These findings emphasize the importance of public subsidies targeted at environmentally efficient firms to enhance their competitiveness under challenging market conditions. Certain nations have opted for stimulus-based regulations to curtail emissions, build a liveable, environmentally friendly setting, and work towards aspirational mitigation targets. New Zealand (NZ) prefers an Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) to taxation, mitigating emissions on one hand while retaining incentives for economic growth on the other. As a result, NZ has initiated a legal framework since 2008 to allow its economic sectors to engage in ETS and minimize emissions. Yet, selecting the appropriate sectors and effectively adjusting sector-specific regulations remain critical and complex challenges in the global design of ETS since both excessive and insufficient intervention can lead to inefficiencies in the system's functioning. Therefore, this study begins validating the NZ ETS's abatement potential regarding sectoral carbon intensity by executing the double machine learning techniques, consolidating the ETS efficacy that has robustly mitigated sectoral carbon intensity in NZ during 2006-2020. However, this conclusion seems invalid at the disaggregated level when focusing on forward-backward linkages, where NZ's input-output tables furnish a compelling scenario of sectoral dependencies and the products (residuals) they provide. Altogether, the regulatory requirements are either too strict or too lax, leaving out five of the 24 (as a whole) key sectors. Saline water has proven to be one of the alternative sources of freshwater for agricultural irrigation in water-scarce areas. However, the changes in farmland ecology caused by saline water irrigation remain unclear. In this study, six irrigation water salinities (CK: 1.3 dS m -1 , S1: 3.4 dS m -1 , S2: 7.1 dS m -1 , S3: 10.6 dS m -1 , S4: 14.1 dS m -1 , S5: 17.7 dS m -1 ) were set in a three-year (2019, 2021-2022) experiment to investigate their effects on soil environment and greenhouse gas emissions in cotton fields under long-term saline water irrigation. Results show that soil salinity in the same layer increased as increasing water salinity. Soil moisture of S3-S5 increased significantly by 4.99-12.94%. There was no significant difference in soil organic matter content between CK and S1. Saline water irrigation increased soil ammonium nitrogen content by 0.57-49.26%, while decreasing nitrate nitrogen content by 1.43-32.03%. Soil CO 2 and N 2 O emissions and CH 4 uptake were lower in S1-S5 than in CK at different cotton growth stages. In addition, saline water irrigation reduced the global warming potential by 6.93-53.86%. A structural equation model was developed to show that soil salinity, moisture, and ammonium nitrogen content were negatively correlated with global warming potential, while organic matter and nitrate nitrogen had positive effects on global warming potential. Inland shallow lakes are recognized as an important source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), and their contribution is expected to increase due to global eutrophication. The generation and release of GHGs involved multiple variables, leading to many uncertain potential factors. This study examined the emission characteristics of GHGs at the water-air interface in 12 shallow lakes categorized into four eutrophic levels in the Yangtze River basin. The average emission rates of CH 4 , CO 2 and N 2 O were 1.55, 3.43, 18.13 and 30.47 mg m -2 h -1 , 4.12, 14.64, 25.11 and 69.84 mg m -2 h -1 , and 0.2, 0.25, 0.43 and 0.79 mg m -2 day -1 in the oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic and hypereutrophic lakes, respectively. There were significant correlations between eutrophic levels and the emission rates of CH 4 and CO 2 (p < 0.05). Redundancy analysis and Mantel test were conducted to further examine the key factors influencing carbon emissions from eutrophic water. It was found that the presence of algae and nutrients in the overlying water played a crucial role in the release of GHGs, indicating the importance of ecosystem productivity in the carbon budget of the lake. In order to assess the bioavailability of organic matter, a new indicator called R (P/H) was proposed. This indicator represents the ratio of protein and humus-like components, which were obtained through EEMs-PARAFAC modeling. The relationship between R (P/H) and CH 4 was found to be exponential (R 2  = 0.90). Additionally, R (P/H) showed a linear relationship with CO 2 and N 2 O (R 2  = 0.68, R 2  = 0.75). China plays a crucial role in responding to global climate change. Provinces are the main sources of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in China's economic and social development. However, it is still unclear how to achieve dual-carbon goals by formulating and implementing local policies to adapt to climate change. In this study, we take Zhejiang Province in China as the research object, based on the LEAP (Low Emissions Analysis Platform) model to construct four social scenarios under different policies, comprehensively considering regional economic characteristics, population, and energy consumption patterns. The results show that to achieve Zhejiang Province's goal of carbon peaking by 2030 while maintaining steady economic growth, additional measures are required to reduce energy consumption intensity or improve the power generation structure. Otherwise, energy demand will increase to 228.06 million tonnes of coal equivalent and carbon emissions will be 487.76 million tonnes in 2050. Moreover, developing clean energy and promoting CCUS technology can continuously reduce carbon emissions to 293.59 and 210.76 million tonnes respectively. The economic viability of CCUS power generation is contingent upon the development of carbon taxes in the future. Cities occupy a central position in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable regional development. Synergistic control of urban gas emissions at the city level is one of the main issues typically explored. The confounding effect and the interactions between the urban indicators of population and area have been ignored in previous studies. In this study, we examined the spatial distribution characteristics and synergy between greenhouse gases (CO 2 ) and air pollutants (SO 2 and NO X ) using spatial population and gas emission data. By upgrading the city clustering algorithm (CCA), we established a method for defining active areas of gas emissions (spatial element-coupled clustering, SECC) and identified active areas of gas emissions in China. In this study, we created a research framework that can simultaneously consider the effects of population and area, as well as the possible interactions between these indicators in active areas. The superlinear scaling relationship between the above three gases was revealed at the active zone level, and the existence of synergy between the emission patterns of the three gases was confirmed. Via further model application, we measured the synergistic efficiency of the three gases. It was found that for every 1% increase in SO 2 and NO X in an active zone, CO 2 increases by 0.86%. In this study, we explored a new perspective and approach to explain the synergy between greenhouse gases and air pollutants. Controlled-release urea application and straw incorporation have been conducted in recent years as environmental-friendly and sustainable farming strategies, but the long-term effects of controlled-release urea application and combination with straw on the dryland maize yield, soil fertility and the environment under future climate scenarios remain unclear. Hence, based on a six-year field experiment, four treatments were used to calibrate and validate the DeNitrification-DeComposition (DNDC) model, including non-nitrogen (CK), split applications of conventional urea (UR), single basal application of conventional urea and controlled-release urea at a ratio of 2:1 (CU), and CU combined with straw (CUS). Subsequently, coupled the well-validated model with future climate to evaluate suitable agricultural production practices under two shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP)-SSP245 and SSP585. The validation results indicated a good fit between the simulated and observed data of greenhouse gas emissions, soil organic carbon (SOC) contents and maize yields. With the anticipation of warmer temperatures and increased precipitation in the future, the yields of UR, CU, and CUS treatment significantly rose. Under SSP585 scenario, the positive impacts of CU treatment on maize yields reduced after the 2050s, exhibiting an average decline of 12.03%. Compared with the UR treatment, the CU treatment markedly reduced cumulative N 2 O emissions, and both treatments maintained the original state of SOC storages in the 2030s, furthermore, the CUS treatment reduced N 2 O emissions by 47.10%, 35.07%, 23.80% and 10.04% in the 2030s, 2050s, 2070s and 2090s, respectively. SOC storages for the CUS treatment gradually increased with an average of 464.58, 350.22, 250.87 and 177.75 kg C ha -1 y -1 for two SSP scenarios in the 2030s, 2050s, 2070s and 2090s, which excellently offset the CO 2 equivalent of emissions caused by N 2 O emissions. Lakes serve as vital reservoirs of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and play pivotal roles in biogeochemical carbon cycles. However, the sources and compositions of DOM in freshwater lakes and their potential effects on lake sediment carbon pools remain unclear. In this study, seven inflowing rivers in the Lake Taihu basin were selected to explore the potential effects of multi-source DOM inputs on the stability of the lake sediment carbon pool. The results showed the high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in the Lake Taihu basin, accompanied by a high complexity level. Lignins constituted the majority of DOM compounds, surpassing 40% of the total, while the organic carbon content was predominantly composed of humic acids (1.02-3.01 g kg -1 ). The high amounts of lignin oxidative cleavage led to CHO being the main molecular structure in the DOM of the seven rivers. The carbon constituents within the sediment carbon reservoir exhibited a positive correlation with dissolved CH 4 and CO 2 , with a notable emphasis on humic acid and dissolved CH 4 (R 2  = 0.86). The elevated concentration of DOM, coupled with its intricate composition, contributed to the increases in dissolved greenhouse gases (GHGs). Experiments showed that the mixing of multi-source DOM can accelerate the organic carbon mineralization processes. The unit carbon emission efficiency was highest in the mixed group, reaching reached 160.9 μmol∙C g -1 , which also exhibited a significantly different carbon pool. The mixed decomposition of DOM from different sources influenced the roles of the lake carbon pool as source and sink, indicating that the multi-source DOM of this lake basin was a potential driving factor for increased carbon emissions. Optimization of crop structure is an efficient way to reduce greenhouse gas (GHGs) from agriculture production. However, carbon footprint have rarely been incorporated into previous planting structure optimization models due to the challenges of assessing the spatial and temporal distribution of agricultural carbon footprint for multiple crops in irrigated districts. In addition, previous planting structure models suffered from strong subjectivity in objective function determination, and the obtained non-dominated solution set offered difficulties to decision-makers in selecting specific implementation options. To fill such gaps, an integrated accounting-assessment-optimization-decision making (AAODM) approach was proposed, which remedies the shortcomings of previous crop planting structure optimization models in carbon footprint mitigation, and overcomes the subjectivity of objective function determination and the difficulty in selecting specific implementation options. Firstly, life cycle assessment (LCA) method was used to account for the multi-year agricultural carbon footprints of multiple crops in the irrigation district. The optimization objective functions of planting structure optimization models can then be determined based on the assessment method of carbon footprint influencing factors. Next, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) was used to generate a non-dominated solution set of the optimization model. The optimal planting structure can be finally obtained based on decision making methods by determining the maximum harmonic mean (HM) and knee points (KPs) of the non-dominated solution set. The developed AAODM approach was then applied to a case study of agricultural crop management in Bayan Nur City, China. The results showed that the level of economic development was a key factor influencing the increase in carbon footprint in Bayan Nur City over the past 20 years. The regulation of the level of economic development would significantly influence the agricultural carbon footprint in Bayan Nur City. Moreover, two optimal crop cultivation patterns were provided for decision-makers by selecting solutions from the Pareto front with decision making methods. The comparison results with other methods showed that the solutions obtained by NSGA-II were superior to MOPSO in terms of carbon reduction. Livestock is an important source of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) in China. Understanding the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission trends and reduction strategies in livestock is crucial for promoting low-carbon transformation of the livestock sector (LS) and achieving the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutralization". First, based on the life cycle assessment and IPCC coefficient methods, we calculated the GHGE of the LS in 31 provinces of China from 2000 to 2020 and identified the temporal and spatial evolution of GHG emission intensity. The LMDI method was then used to analyze the influence of efficiency, structure, economy, and population size on GHGE. Finally, the STIRPAT model was used to simulate the future evolution trend of the LS emissions under the SSPs scenario. The results revealed that the GHGE in the life cycle of livestock production decreased from 535.47 Mt carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2 e) in 2000 to 532.18 Mt CO 2 e in 2020, and the main source was CH 4 emissions from enteric fermentation of livestock. Economic and efficiency factors markedly influenced the changes in GHGE from the LS in China. Further, economic factors contributed >40% to the increase in GHGE in most provinces. Under the SSP1, SSP2, and SSP4 scenarios, livestock production can achieve the carbon peak target in 2030. Under the baseline scenario (SSP2), the GHGE of China's LS in 2030 and 2060 are expected to be 491.48 Mt CO 2 e and 352.11 Mt CO 2 e, respectively. The focus of mitigation measures for livestock production in the future is to optimize the production structure of the LS, promote the low-carbon transformation of the energy structure of livestock feeding, and establish an efficient and intensive management model. Significant shock of climate change on crop yield will challenge the performance of bio-crop on substituting fossil energy to mitigate climate change. Taking cassava-to-ethanol system in Guangxi Province of South China as an example, we coupled a random forest (RF) model with 10 Global climate models (GCMs) outputs to predict the future cassava yields. Subsequently, the net energy value (NEV) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the cassava-to-ethanol system across varied topographies are assessed using a life cycle analysis. We demonstrate that the abrupt increases in temperatures are the primary contributors to declining yields. Notably, cassava yields in hilly regions decline more than those in plains and display greater variability among concentration pathway scenarios over time. Future NEV and GHG performance of cassava-to-ethanol will undergo significant decreases over time, especially within the high concentration pathway scenario (NEV decrease 28%, GHG increase 3.4% from 2006 to 2100). The performance reductions in hilly area are exacerbated by more harvest loss and labor and material inputs during the "field-to-wheel", negating its energy advantage over fossil fuels. Therefore, adopting a lower concentration pathway and favoring plantation in plains could maintain cassava-to-ethanol as a viable climate mitigation strategy. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is the third most potent greenhouse gas (GHG) and the most important ozone depleting substance. But how global N 2 O emissions are connected through the interwoven trade network remains unclear. This paper attempts to specifically trace anthropogenic N 2 O emissions via global trade networks using a multi-regional input-output model and a complex network model. Nearly one quarter of global N 2 O emissions can be linked to products traded internationally in 2014. The top 20 economies contribute to about 70% of the total embodied N 2 O emission flows. In terms of the trade embodied emissions classified by sources, cropland-, livestock-, chemistry-, and other industries-related embodied N 2 O emissions account for 41.9%, 31.2%, 19.9%, and 7.0%, respectively. Clustering structure of the global N 2 O flow network is revealed by the regional integration of 5 trading communities. Hub economies such as mainland China and the USA are collectors and distributors, and some emerging countries, such as Mexico, Brazil, India, and Russia, also exhibit dominance in different kinds of networks. This study selects the cattle sector to further verify that low production-side emission intensities and trade cooperation can lead to N 2 O emission reduction. An emission trading system (ETS) has been consistently recognized as a promising instrument to stem massive carbon emissions from energy-intensive industries. However, it remains ambiguous whether the ETS can achieve emission mitigation without undermining economic activity in specific industries in emerging running markets. This study focuses on the impact of China's four independent ETS pilots on carbon emissions, industrial competitiveness, and spatial spillover effects in the iron and steel industry. With a synthetic control method for causal inference, we find that the achievement of emission reductions was generally accompanied by losses of competitiveness in the pilot regions. An exception to this trend was seen in the Guangdong pilot, where the aggregate emissions increased due to the incentivized output created by a specific benchmarking allocation approach. Despite impaired competitiveness, the ETS did not cause significant spatial spillovers, which alleviates concerns about potential carbon leakage under unilateral climate regulation. Although saline aquatic ecosystems are significant emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs), dynamic changes in GHGs at the sediment-water interface remain unclear. The present investigation carried out a total of four sampling campaigns in Daihai Lake, which is a eutrophic saline lake situated in a semi-arid area of northern China. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) fluxes at the sediment-water interface and the influencing factors. The mean concentrations of porewater CO 2 and CH 4 were 44.98 ± 117.99 μmol L -1 and 124.36 ± 97.00 μmol L -1 , far exceeding those in water column of 11.14 ± 2.16 μmol L -1 and 0.33 ± 0.23 μmol L -1 , respectively. The CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes at the sediment-water interface (F S - W CO 2 and F S-W CH 4 ) exhibited significant spatial and temporal variations, with mean values of 9.24 ± 13.84 μmol m -2  d -1 and 3.53 ± 4.36 μmol m -2  d -1 , respectively, indicating that sediment is the source of CO 2 and CH 4 in the water column. However, CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes were much lower than those measured at the water-air interface in a companion study (17.54 ± 14.54 mmol m -2 d -1 and 0.50 ± 0.50 mmol m -2 d -1 , respectively), indicating that the diffusive flux of gases at the sediment-water interface was not the primary source of CO 2 and CH 4 emissions to the atmosphere. Regression and correlation analyses revealed that salinity (Sal) and nutrients were the most influential factors on porewater gas concentrations, and that gas fluxes increased with increasing gas concentrations and porosity. The microbial activity of sediment is greatly affected by nutrients and Sal. Additionally, Sal has the ability to regulate biogeochemical processes, thereby regulating GHG emissions. The present investigation addresses the research gap concerning GHG emissions from sediments of eutrophic saline lakes. The study suggests that controlling the eutrophication and salinization of lakes could be a viable strategy for reducing carbon emissions from lakes. Combining organic and inorganic fertilizer applications can help reduce inorganic fertilizer use and increase soil fertility. However, the most suitable proportion of organic fertilizer is unknown, and the effect of combining organic and inorganic fertilizers on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is inconclusive. This study aimed to identify the optimum ratio of inorganic fertilizer to organic fertilizer in a winter wheat-summer maize cropping system in northern China to achieve high grain yields and low GHG intensities. The study compared six fertilizer treatments: no fertilization (CK), conventional inorganic fertilization (NP), and constant total nitrogen input with 25% (25%OF), 50% (50%OF), 75% (75%OF), or 100% (100%OF) organic fertilizer. The results showed that the 75%OF treatment increased the winter wheat and summer maize yields the most, by 7.2-25.1% and 15.3-16.7%, respectively, compared to NP. The 75%OF and 100%OF treatments had the lowest nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions, 187.3% and 200.2% lower than the NP treatment, while all fertilizer treatments decreased methane (CH 4 ) absorption (by 33.1-82.0%) compared to CK. Carbon dioxide flux increased in the summer maize growing season (by 7.7-30.5%) compared to CK but did not significantly differ between fertilizer treatments. The average global warming potential (GWP) rankings across two wheat-maize rotations were NP > 50%OF > 25%OF > 100%OF > 75%OF > CK, and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) rankings were NP > 25%OF > 50%OF > 100%OF > 75%OF > CK. This paper examines the impact of carbon risk induced through carbon price uncertainty in cap-and-trade policies on the value of covered firms. Specifically, the study explores the effects of policy adjustments made at the start of the third phase of the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS), which aimed to address an oversupply of carbon allowances. Using a difference-in-difference approach, we find that the resulting increase in policy-induced carbon risk led to value discounts for firms with insufficient carbon allowances to offset their emissions, even when carbon prices themselves remained low. Alternate wet and dry (AWD) irrigation and organic fertilizers substitution (OFS) have contrasting effects on CH 4 and N 2 O emissions in rice cultivation. Combining these two practices may be feasible for simultaneous reduction of CH 4 and N 2 O emission from paddy. Hence, we conducted a two-year field experiment to explore the reduction of greenhouse gases under the combination of AWD and OFS. The field experiment which was designed with two irrigation methods (continuous flooding (CF) irrigation and AWD irrigation), and five nitrogen regimes (N0, N135, and N180 represent 0, 135, and 180 kg N ha - 1 , respectively, ON25 and ON50 represent 25% and 50% OFS for inorganic fertilizer, respectively). The results showed a single-peak emission for CH 4 fluxes during the whole rice growing season in all water and nitrogen treatments while the N 2 O fluxes peak only observed during tillering period with AWD irrigation. AWD irrigation and OFS showed a limited reduction in global warming potential (GWP). These were owing to that AWD irrigation reduced 38.3% CH 4 emissions while increase 145.9% N 2 O emissions when compared to CF irrigation, and the low rate (25%) OFS only reduced CH 4 emission by 29.4% while high rate (50%) only reduce N 2 O emission by 38.8% when compared to conventional inorganic nitrogen fertilizer (N180). Combined AWD and ON25 could maximize the reduction in GWP and yield-scaled GWP, which were reduce 58.0% and 52.5%, respectively, compare to the conventional water and nitrogen management (CF and N180). Furthermore, the structural equation modelling (SEM) indicated that the soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and rice aboveground biomass showed a significant positive effect on CH 4 fluxes while soil NH 4 + with a negative effect, and the soil NH 4 + , nitrification potential, denitrification potential significant affected N 2 O fluxes with a positive effect while DOC with a negative effect. Nutrients of carbon, nitrogen and water of farmland ecosystem are essential foundation to guarantee crop production, but also environmental flows associated greenhouse gas (GHG), reactive nitrogen (Nr) releases, and water consumption. Their flow characteristics serve as a crucial starting point for creating efficient management practices and mitigation measures. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to quantify the carbon footprint (CF), nitrogen footprint (NF), water footprint (WF), and comprehensive environmental footprint (ComF) of six paddy-upland rotation systems, including fallow-paddy rice (FA-PR), Chinese milk vetch-paddy rice (CMV-PR), wheat-paddy rice (WH-PR), rapeseed-paddy rice (RA-PR), green forage wheat-paddy rice (WF-PR), and vicia faba bean-paddy rice (FB-PR), as well as to analysis their relationships and define driving factors. Results showed that the lowest area-scaled CF of 3.74 t CO 2 -eq ha -1 were observed in the CMV-PR rotation, which were 41% lower than that for WH-PR (the highest CF, 9.13 t CO 2 -eq ha -1 ) when soil carbon change was taken into account. It is of importance that soil carbon sequestration in CMV-PR rotation could offset up to around 57% of its CF, while the WH-PR rotation only offset 25%. The RA-PR rotation had the highest area-scaled NF and WF, which was 1.8 and 1.9 times greater than those of the lowest rotation in FA-PR. In terms of comprehensive environmental effects, the six rotation systems showed the order of FA-PR < CMV-PR < FB-PR < RA-PR < WF-PR < WH-PR, with NH 3 volatilization accounting 60.7%-66.7% and blue-green WF for 17.5%-26.6% of the total. Therefore, priority should be given to optimizing N fertilizer application and water consumption for paddy-upland rotation systems. As a policy instrument to address climate change, the Carbon Emissions Trading System (ETS) will directly affect the location choice and development strategies of high-emitting firms' off-site investments, which is crucial to achieve optimal allocation of capital factors and coordinated development among regions. Using data of Chinese listed companies from 2007 to 2020, this study assesses for the first time the impact of Carbon Emissions Trading System on regulated firms' off-site investment strategies at the firm level using the Heterogeneity-Robust Difference-in-differences approach. The estimation results indicate that (1) the Carbon Emissions Trading System leads to about 20% reduction in off-site investment by regulated firms, which is mainly reflected in cross-city investment; (2) the heterogeneous investment effect is more obvious in private enterprise groups, but not in state-owned enterprise groups. Government intervention influenced the investment decisions of enterprise groups to make their development strategies more consistent with local economic growth objectives; (3) regulated enterprise groups significantly expanded their production layout locally and reduced off-site production investment; (4) the Carbon Emissions Trading System will promote long-term performance improvement of regulated firms. The European Union has identified the Textile and Clothing industry as one of the essential objectives towards carbon neutrality in 2050 in line with the "European Green Deal". There are no previous research papers focused on analysing the drivers and inhibitors of the past greenhouse gas emission changes of the textile and clothing industry in Europe. This paper aims to analyse the determinants of the changes in these emissions, and the disassociation level between emissions and economic growth, throughout the 27 Member States of the European Union, from 2008 to 2018. A Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index that explains the key drivers of the changes in greenhouse gas emissions of European Union Textile and Cloth industry and a Decoupling Index have been applied. The results generally conclude that the intensity and carbonisation effects are key factors that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The lower relative weight of the textile and clothing industry throughout the EU-27 was noteworthy, and favours lower emissions, partially counteracted by the activity effect. Also, most Member States have been decoupling the industry's emissions from economic growth. Commercial vehicles are important within the context of global warming, since they exhibit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are disproportionate to their quantity. The aim of this study was to create a bottom-up GHG emissions assessment model which considers GHG emissions of newly produced commercial vehicles and those in current use. Through this study, the number of future commercial vehicles were predicted, thereby facilitating a simulation of future GHG emissions. Our results show that the total GHG emissions of commercial vehicles in 2019 was 580 million t CO 2-eq. . Among them, the GHG emissions stemming from the production of new commercial vehicles accounted for ∼0.3% of the emissions, whereas the use stage accounted for more than 99.0%. Moreover, the future ownership of commercial vehicles depends on GDP and the demand of freight and passenger transport. The ownership of commercial vehicles was predicted about 36.61 million in 2025, 45.44 million in 2030 and 55.85 million in 2035. The carbon peak of commercial vehicles varies across different scenarios, peaking around 2031-2034, at 680-780 million t CO 2-eq. . This study systematically simulated the carbon peak of commercial vehicles, contributing toward a deeper understanding of commercial vehicles within the context of GHG emissions. To fill in this knowledge gap, the current study quantifies and analyzes GHG emissions and intensity (emission intensity is defined as GHG emissions per unit of production) from Chinese marine aquaculture (marine aquaculture production) over the past 30 years (1991-2020). The production of marine aquaculture comes from the China Fisheries Statistical Yearbooks. And the GHG emissions and intensity were calculated based on five sectors (commercial feed, trash fish, N 2 O, CH 4, and energy) by Emission-Factor Approach. The results suggest that, excluding shellfish and algae, GHG emissions of ten coastal provinces (excluding Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau) increased from 2 Mt (10 9  kg) CO 2 -eq in 1991 to 25 Mt CO 2 -eq in 2020. In contrast, GHG emission intensity decreased in the same period from 7.33 (t CO 2 -eq/t production) to 6.34 (t CO 2 -eq/t production), indicating a progressive mitigation in GHG emissions per unit of product, hence sustainably satisfying a growing demand for food. As a result, China's marine aquaculture seems to be paving a promising way towards the neutrality of GHG emissions. In most provinces, GHG is on the rise, and only in Tianjin is on the decline in recent years. For the emissions intensity, the values of more than half provinces showed the downtrends. In addition, by considering the ratio of shellfish and algae, Chinese marine aquaculture can improve the net zero goal for GHG emissions of the sector. Urbanization and globalization are changing the conventional constraints of seasonality and geography on food consumption, such as that of fresh cherries. The rising demand for year-round cherry consumption in China is currently satisfied by open-field, greenhouse-produced, and imported products. This study conducted a spatial-temporal life cycle evaluation of the environmental performance of cherry consumption behaviors during different seasons of the year. Moreover, based on the definitions of global and local seasonality, the additional environmental costs of out-of-season cherry consumption were estimated. Results show that seasonality was an important factor affecting the environmental burdens of cherry consumption. Eating cherries imported from Chile by air in October resulted in the highest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 6.38 kg CO 2 -eq/kg, while eating domestic open-field cherries during May to July (the natural harvest season) was a relatively environmentally beneficial option. The total cherry consumption in China in 2019 generated GHG emissions of 126.99 × 10 4  t CO 2 -eq. Under the definitions of global and local seasonality, the out-of-season consumption led to additional environmental costs of 57.59 × 10 4 and 85.67 × 10 4  t CO 2 -eq, accounting for 45.35% and 67.46% of total emissions, respectively. Furthermore, the time-environment trade-off effect of cherry consumption illustrates the higher environmental costs are exchanged for satisfying the appetite for out-of-season fresh foods. China's carbon emissions account for approximately a quarter of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. In 2020, China's fossil fuels accounted for approximately 85% of the primary energy demand, with coal alone accounting for 60%. Considering the severe global warming situation, it is necessary to reveal the spatial and temporal differences and analyze the spillover effects of carbon emissions between regions. In this study, a positive and significant spatial correlation between regional carbon emissions in China was found using an exploratory spatial data analysis. The spatial Durbin model was then utilized to explore the direct and spillover effects of factors that included economic growth, the energy intensity, and the level of technological innovation on regional carbon emissions. Whether a direct effect or a spillover effect, economic growth and improvements in the regional levels of technological innovation had significant inhibitory effects on carbon emissions both in the long term and in the short term. Specifically, an increase of 1% in the level of technological innovation led to a reduction of approximately 0.17% in the region's carbon emissions. However, a growth in the energy intensity will increase carbon emissions. In addition, an increase in the technological input intensity will lead to an increase in carbon emissions in local regions. However, an increase in neighboring regions will restrain carbon emissions in a local region. Although the past twenty years have witnessed China's remarkable economic development, the cost in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and a deteriorating environment has been enormous. Numerous studies have revealed the influence of household factors on household carbon dioxide emissions (HCEs) and called for a reduction of HCEs to mitigate climate change, but few have focused on assessing the most significant household driving factors of HCEs. Using statistical data between 2005 and 2019 in Jiangsu, China, this study developed an extended stochastic impact by regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) model to assess the most significant driving factors of HCEs. The results show that the most significant driving factors are household size, total population, unemployment, and urbanisation rate. The study found that HCEs are positively impacted by household size while negatively impacted by the unemployment rate. Based on the study's findings, the following suggestions are proposed to lower HCEs: (i) establish an optimal consumption concept to guide residents towards consuming reasonably; (ii) cultivate a low-carbon concept among residents and promote low-carbon emissions living; and (iii) pay close attention to population structure factors and formulate effective measures accordingly. Solar energy is considered one of the key solutions to the growing demand for energy and to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Thanks to the relatively low cost of land use for solar energy and high power generation potential, a large number of photovoltaic (PV) power stations have been established in desert areas around the world. Despite the contribution to easing the energy crisis and combating climate change, large-scale construction and operation of PV power stations can change the land cover and affect the environment. However, few studies have focused on these special land cover changes, especially vegetation cover changes, which hinders understanding the effects of the extensive development of solar energy. Here, we used Continuous Change Detection and Classification - Spectral Mixture Analysis (CCDC-SMA) based on Landsat images to monitor changes in vegetation abundance before and after the PV power stations deployment. To reduce the interference of PV shading on vegetation abundance estimation, we improved the vegetation (VG) fraction from SMA and developed the Photovoltaics-Adjusted Vegetation (PAVG) fraction for vegetation abundance measurements in PV power stations. Results show that PV power stations in China's 12 biggest deserts expanded from 0 to 102.56 km 2 from 2011 to 2018, mainly distributed in the central part of north China. The desert vegetation in the deployment area of PV power stations presented a significant greening trend. Compared to 2010, the greening area reached 30.80 km 2 , accounting for 30% of the total area of PV power stations. Overall, the large-scale deployment of PV power stations has promoted desert greening, primarily due to government-led Photovoltaic Desert Control Projects and favorable climatic change. The expansion of road networks in emerging economies such as China causes significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This development is conflicting with China's commitment to achieve carbon neutrality. Thus, there is a need to better understand life cycle emissions of road infrastructure and opportunities to mitigate these emissions. Existing impact studies of roads in developing countries do not address recycled materials, improved pavement maintenance, or pavement-vehicle interaction and electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Combining firsthand information from Chinese road construction engineers with publicly available data, this paper estimates a comprehensive account of GHG emissions of the road pavement network to be constructed in the next ten years in the Shandong province in Northern China. Further, we estimate the potential of GHG emission reductions achievable under three scenario sets: maintenance optimization, alternative pavement material replacement, and EV adoption. Results show that the life cycle GHG emissions of highways and Class 1-4 roads to be constructed in the next 10 years amount to 147 Mt CO2-eq. Considering the use phase in our model reveals that it is the dominant stage in terms of emissions, largely due to pavement-vehicle interaction. Vehicle electrification can only moderately mitigate these emissions. Other stages, such as materials production and road maintenance and rehabilitation, contribute substantially to GHG emissions as well, highlighting the importance of optimizing the management of these stages. Surprisingly, longer, not shorter maintenance intervals, yield significant emission reductions. Another counter-intuitive finding is that thicker and more material-intensive pavement surfaces cause lower emissions overall. Taken together, optimal maintenance and rehabilitation schedules, alternative material use, and vehicle electrification provide GHG reduction potentials of 11%, 4%-16% and 2%-6%, respectively., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Constructing and adopting a county-level panel dataset containing carbon emission (CO 2 ) and economic information between 2009 and 2017, this paper employs the continuous difference-in-differences (DID) model and is among the first to conduct an evaluation of the CO 2 reduction effect of China's emission trading scheme (ETS) pilot markets from the dual perspectives of price and scale. The empirical results emerge that the increase of transaction price and the expansion of transaction volume in ETS pilots have a persistent and significant influence on CO 2 reduction. Parallel to this, it is found the rising of transaction price in ETS can be effective on CO 2 reduction by improving the energy structure transition, however, optimization of industrial structure and the development of ICT might be the essential channels driven by the expansion of transaction volume. Last, this paper identifies the synergistic effect on different sorts of contaminants and find it is more substantial to those with the gas state. While the Global North is historically responsible for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, Newly Industrializing Countries (NICs) are expected to overtake developed country emissions in the coming years. At the same time, NICs are climbing the ladder of the global economy, increasing their competitiveness on the global stage and catching up with technological competencies of developed economies. Against this background, this paper explores innovation and collaboration in Climate Change Mitigation Technologies (CCMTs) in NICs. The research question is whether the propensity to innovate and diffuse CCMTs is impacted by technological collaboration with two highly developed countries, Germany and The United States. The sample of NICs includes the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) plus Israel, Mexico, and Turkey, in a panel from 1995 to 2015. The empirical results suggest that collaboration with both Germany and the U.S. is highly significant for domestic CCMT innovation in NICs. These findings are important because, stepping beyond the literature on the merits and drawbacks of global climate governance tools such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and related UNFCCC processes, they show that collaboration for climate and environmental technologies could become a key tool to significantly improve the chances to stay in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. The carbon trading policy seeks to control carbon emissions by putting a price on carbon emissions and establishing a corresponding carbon market for trading. It is a significant move by China to address climate issues and achieve its Carbon Neutrality target. Therefore, assessing the policy effects of carbon trading is fundamental to its implementation nationwide. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces and cities in China from 2008 to 2018, this paper uses the Synthetic Control Method and Differences-in-Differences method to assess the effects of carbon trading policy on achieving Carbon Neutrality. By measuring the net carbon emissions, this research explores the level of Carbon Neutrality in each region. Based on the Five-sphere Integrated Plan (which covers the economy, politics, culture, social and ecological civilization), this research further verifies the impact paths of carbon trading policy on Carbon Neutrality. The results show that: First, carbon trading policy has a significant and sustainable effect on Carbon Neutrality. Second, from the perspective of the Five-sphere Integrated Plan, the carbon trading policy can help to reduce carbon sources and increase carbon sinks by adjusting the industrial structure, coordinating low-carbon policies, promoting cultural dissemination, increasing green space construction, and reducing energy intensity to achieve Carbon Neutrality. Countries worldwide consider solid waste collection and recycling necessary due to the recent emphasis on conservation of resources and environmental protection. Due to the constraints from resource depletion and the need for sustainable economic growth, solid waste recycling has become a critical issue in China. Several indigenous researchers in China have studied the potential benefits of solid waste recycling. However, most studies limited the environmental assessment of solid waste recycling to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and considered only one type of solid waste (paper or plastic). Therefore, the present study analyzed the energy (electricity) and environmental (GHG and air pollutant emissions) benefits of recycling steel, nonferrous metal, plastic, and paper wastes from 2005 to 2017 in China. The study used the formulation of model equations method to estimate the electrical energy and environmental benefits. Prominent findings show that the total amount of electricity saved by recycling solid waste from 2005 to 2017 was 3743.3 Mtce. On average, solid waste recycling during the period led to a 43.2% saving on electricity. Solid waste recycling avoided 4765.9 billion kg of carbon dioxide emission and 22.502 billion kg of methane emission. It was also found that the recycling of solid waste saved a total amount of 10,669.8 M kg of NO X emission but had a burden of -6263.2 M kg of VOCs emission on the environment. Solid waste recycling avoided the emission of CO 2 , CH 4 , NO X , and SO X, but the recycling of steel, plastics, and paper waste had negative impacts on the environment in terms of VOCs and PM emissions. The methods of life cycle assessment and cost-effectiveness analysis were employed to compare the energetic, environmental, and economic performances of three household-based modern bioenergy (MBE) utilization systems: biogas utilization (BGs), biomass briquette utilization for energy only (BBs), and biomass briquette utilization for energy and biochar (BCs). The results showed that all the three MBEs performed positive results in net energy output, which ranged from 0.86 to 3.75 MJ (kg crop residues) -1 . The positive greenhouse gas reductions also can be acquired when using these three MBEs to substitute for traditional energy, respectively. The cost-effectiveness values of three MBE systems ranged from 343 RMB (tCO 2e ) -1 for BGs to 598 RMB (tCO 2e ) -1 for BCs (the CO 2e indicates the CO 2 equivalent). Considering the supply index analysis results furtherly, the BGs is regarded as the best strategy for the development of MBE in rural households. To tackle climate change, Chinese government has applied an array of mitigating measures to reduce CO2 emissions. During the 11th Five-year Plan, Chinese government set the emission reduction target policy to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20%. This paper attempts to estimate the effect of this emission reduction target policy on industrial performance from complexity perspective. The result shows more complex industrial structure is related to less coal consumption. In general, emission reduction target policy has a negative effect on the probability of branching into new industries and lower the productivity and profitability of a given industry. However, this negative effect is weaker for more complex industries. Only for industries with very high complexity, emission reduction target policy can improve the performance of an industry rather than exerting a negative effect. China's economic development has entered a "new normal" stage where economic growth has slowed down. In this context, China's local authorities and industry circles are particularly concerned about the impact of emissions trading scheme (ETS), China's first major market-based approach to control greenhouse gas emissions, on competitiveness. This paper contributes to the thin empirical studies on this issue from the perspective of China's provincial industrial sub-sectors. We divide the industry of each province into 37 sub-sectors and screen the actual industrial sub-sector coverage of China's pilot ETSs. Taking advantage of the rich information of sub-sector characteristics and the longitudinal structure of our dataset over 2005-2015, we use a combination of propensity score matching technique and difference-in-difference models to analyze the impact of China's pilot ETSs on gross industrial output value (GIOV) and employment. Empirical results indicate that China's pilot ETSs have exerted a negative impact on the GIOV, and production cut is still the major approach to achieve carbon emission reductions. We also find China's pilot ETSs have led to a significant decrease in employment of the covered industrial sub-sectors. Several robustness checks confirm our findings. Further, our discussions suggest that in the short term, China's pilot ETSs have not promoted the "decoupling" of carbon emissions and economic outputs in industrial sub-sectors. While achieving carbon emission reductions, the pilot ETSs have failed to avoid a negative impact on competitiveness. Lastly, we suggest that competent authorities should prudently tailor the quota allocation methods according to sectorial conditions and consider setting up compensation measures, and covered enterprises should incorporate low-carbon development concept and address the challenges proactively from the long run., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
