A rapid upsurge in urban and industrial developments leads to increased generations of solid wastes. The most accepted technique of waste discarding around the world is landfilling. Leaching chemicals from municipal dumping grounds can pollute the groundwater source and the surrounding environment without appropriate precautionary measures. Bentonite is a low-cost constituent used as a liner material in landfills due to its low permeability, high sealing ability, high specific surface area, and the ability to hold up the impurity migration through adsorption. However, leachate interaction with bentonite may alter its properties and reduce its usefulness as a barrier material in the long term. Also, bentonite having different chemical and mineralogical compositions will behave differently due to the leachate interaction. Therefore, it is necessary to compare the performance of various bentonites in the presence of leachates. In the present investigation, two Indian bentonites of different mineralogical compositions were studied for their change in the index properties, swelling, swelling potential, swelling pressure, hydraulic conductivity, consolidation parameters and shear strength properties in the presence of fly ash, sewage sludge and paper mill leachates. The outcomes showed that in the presence of all the leachates, liquid limit, free swell, compression index, swelling potential, swelling pressure, time to complete 90% of consolidation and shear strength dropped; whereas, hydraulic conductivity and coefficient of consolidation increased. Besides, the quality of bentonite prominently influenced the hydraulic, strength and swelling behaviour. The bentonite having a higher cation exchange capacity, liquid limit, specific surface area, and swelling capability undergoes a higher variability in the free swell (80.0, 73.8 and 76.9% decline), liquid limit (73.5, 61.7 and 69.2% decline), swelling potential (61.3, 55.7 and 51.0% decline), swelling pressure (53.3 and 56.4% decrease), and hydraulic conductivity (57.5, 8.6 and 41.1 times increase at a void ratio of 1.2) values when infused with fly ash, sewage sludge and paper mill leachates, respectively. The study also showed that the fly ash leachate interaction causes a higher variation in bentonite behaviour than sewage sludge and paper mill leachates. With the increased awareness of reusing solid wastes for higher sustainability and the concern of water pollution associated with phosphorus over-emission, there are strong interests in developing solid waste based adsorbents for purifying phosphorus-containing wastewater. As a rich calcium resource, paper mill sludge (i.e., a major solid waste from pulping industry) can be used as phosphorus removal adsorbent after calcination. Thus, in this work, a simple and clean thermally treating route has been proposed for preparing calcium-containing biochar from paper mill sludge. The effect of the physicochemical properties of paper mill sludge and its carbonization condition on phosphorus adsorption has been analyzed. Moreover, the influence of some key adsorption parameters, e.g., biochar dosage, initial pH of solution, co-existing anions, initial phosphorus concentration and contact time has also been investigated. The results showed that the phosphorus adsorption data could be fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isothermal models. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity of the as-prepared optimal calcium-containing biochar could reach to 68.49 mg·g -1 at 25 °C. Combined with the characterization results, it can be reasonably inferred that the adsorption process was chemisorption-dominated. Lastly, the application of this spent adsorbent in agriculture field has also been discussed. The present study investigated the use of algae biorefinery waste and wastepaper in the preparation of cost-effective and eco-friendly xerogels for the removal of congo red (CR) and Fe 2+ . The xerogel properties such as density, swelling degree and porosity were modified by incorporating alginate extracted from the brown seaweed Cystoseira trinodis. The developed biosorbents exhibited a light and porous network structure and were characterized by a fast uptake of CR and Fe 2+ and adsorption efficiency was increased at pH 6-8. The equilibrium adsorption capacity was found to be 6.20-7.28 mg CR g -1 biosorbent and 8.08-8.39 mg Fe 2+ g -1 biosorbent using different xerogels. The adsorption of CR obeyed first-order kinetics, while, Fe 2+ followed second-order kinetics. Intraparticle diffusion model suggested a boundary layer effect. The adsorption capacity was maximally obtained as 41.15 mg g -1 and 169.49 mg g -1 for CR and Fe 2+ using wastepaper/Spirulina and wastepaper/alginate/Spirulina xerogel, respectively. Temkin isotherm fitted better to the equilibrium data of CR adsorption than Langmuir and Freundlich models. While, equilibrium data of Fe 2+ exhibited a best fit to both Langmuir and Freundlich models. Additionally, the Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm suggested that adsorption mechanism of CR or Fe 2+ is predominately physisorption. Investigation of thermodynamic parameters such as ΔH° and ΔS° and ΔG° confirmed the feasibility, spontaneity, randomness and endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Electrostatic attraction, H-bonding and n-π interactions were mainly involved in the biosorption process of CR. Pulp and paper mills are one of the major effluent generating industries in the world. In most cases, mill effluent (treated or raw) is discharged back into a river, creek, stream or other water body; resulting in negative environmental impacts, as well as social concerns, among the downstream users. Pulp and paper mill effluent management, which could result in zero discharge into downstream water bodies, would present the best management option to address socio-environmental concerns. This paper presents such an effort aimed at closing the water cycle by using treated effluent from the mill to irrigate forage and fodder crops for producing animals feed. The treated effluent is delivered from the mill through gravity into a winter storage dam of 490 ML capacity. For irrigation applications on 110 ha of farmland, which is 42% of the total farmland, the water is pumped from the winter storage dam to five individual paddocks with Centre Pivot (CP) irrigators and one rectangular paddock with a Soft Hose Travelling (SHT) irrigator. From October 2001 to June 2006, a total of 2,651 mm of wastewater was applied at the farm. The impact assessment results, obtained from field monitoring, investigations and analysis, indicated that the closed water cycle effluent management strategy described had resulted in a lessening of the impact on water resources usually associated with paper mills. However, social attitudes to the use of crops that have been irrigated with recycled waters and the resulting impact on market value of the produce may still be a major consideration.

This study aims to investigate the treatment of paper mill effluents using electrocoagulation. Removal of lignin, phenol, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) from paper mill effluents was investigated at various current intensities by using different electrodes (Al and Fe) and at various electrolysis times (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5min). It was observed that the experiments carried out at 12V, an electrolysis time of 2min and a current intensity of 77.13mA were sufficient for the removal of these pollutants with each electrode. The removal capacities of the process using an Al electrode were 80% of lignin, 98% of phenol, 70% of BOD, and 75% of COD after 7.5min. Using an Fe electrode the removal capacities were 92%, 93%, 80% and 55%, respectively. In addition, it was found that removal of lignin, phenol, BOD and COD increased with increasing current intensity. In the experiments carried out at different current intensities, higher removal can be explained through a decrease in intra-resistance of solution and consequently an increase at the transfer speed of organic species to electrodes. It was also found that Al electrode performs higher efficiency than Fe electrode except for COD removal. However, the time required for removal of BOD was more than that of COD. The results suggest that electrocoagulation could be considered as an effective alternative to paper mill effluents treatment.

A lab-scale granular activated carbon sequencing batch biofilm reactor (GAC-SBBR), a combined adsorption and biological process, was developed to treat real wastewater from a recycled paper mill. In this study, one-consortia of mixed culture (4000-5000 mg/L) originating from recycled paper mill activated sludge from Kajang, Malaysia was acclimatized. The GAC-SBBR was fed with real wastewater taken from the same recycled paper mill, which had a high concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and adsorbable organic halides (AOX). The operational duration of the GAC-SBBR was adjusted from 48 h to 24, 12 and finally 8 h to evaluate the effect of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the simultaneous removal of COD and AOX. The COD and AOX removals were in the range of 53-92% and 26-99%, respectively. Pulp mill effluent was treated by different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) consisting of UV, UV/H2O2, TiO2-assisted photo-catalysis (UV/TiO2) and UV/H2O2/TiO2 in lab-scale reactors for total organic carbon (TOC) and toxicity removals. Effects of some operating parameters such as the initial pH, oxidant and catalyst concentrations on TOC and toxicity removals were investigated. Almost every method resulted in some degree of TOC and toxicity removal from the pulp mill effluent. However, the TiO2-assisted photo-catalysis (UV/TiO2) resulted in the highest TOC and toxicity removals under alkaline conditions when compared with the other AOPs tested. Approximately, 79.6% TOC and 94% toxicity removals were obtained by the TiO2-assisted photo-catalysis (UV/TiO2) with a titanium dioxide concentration of 0.75gl(-1) at pH 11 within 60min.

This discussion addresses some aspects of a recent paper appearing in this journal which investigates cost effective coastal water management based on different assumptions of the probability distributions (normal and log-normal) of pollutant transport. We also suggest an alternative approach to overcome the technical problems of using the theoretical correct distribution for characterising environmental data (log-normal) within a probabilistic programming framework.

Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are called to fill the gap between the treatability attained by conventional physico-chemical and biological treatments and the day-to-day more exigent limits fixed by environmental regulations. They are particularly important for the removal of anthropogenic pollutants and for this reason, they have been widely investigated in the last decades and even applied in the treatment of many industrial wastewater flows. However, despite the great development reached, AOPs cannot be considered mature yet and there are many new fields worthy of research. Some of them are going to be briefly introduced in this paper, including hybrid processes, heterogeneous semiconductor photocatalysis, sulphate-radical oxidation and electrochemical advanced oxidation for water/wastewater treatment. Moreover, the use of photoelectrochemical processes for energy production is discussed. The textile industries hold an important position in the global industrial arena because of their undeniable contributions to basic human needs satisfaction and to the world economy. These industries are however major consumers of water, dyes and other toxic chemicals. The effluents generated from each processing step comprise substantial quantities of unutilized resources. The effluents if discharged without prior treatment become potential sources of pollution due to their several deleterious effects on the environment. The treatment of heterogeneous textile effluents therefore demands the application of environmentally benign technology with appreciable quality water reclamation potential. These features can be observed in various innovative membrane based techniques. The present review paper thus elucidates the contributions of membrane technology towards textile effluent treatment and unexhausted raw materials recovery. The reuse possibilities of water recovered through membrane based techniques, such as ultrafiltration and nanofiltration in primary dye houses or auxiliary rinse vats have also been explored. Advantages and bottlenecks, such as membrane fouling associated with each of these techniques have also been highlighted. Additionally, several pragmatic models simulating transport mechanism across membranes have been documented. The main aim of this work was to study the removal efficiency of Pb from synthetic and industrial wastewaters by using biomass fly ashes. The biomass fly ashes were produced in a biomass boiler of a pulp and paper industry. Three concentrations of Pb(2+) were tested in the synthetic wastewater (1, 10 and 1000 mg Pb/L). Moreover, two different wastewaters were collected in an industrial wastewater treatment plant (IWWTP) of an industry of lead-acid batteries: (i) wastewater of the equalization tank, and (ii) IWWTP effluent. All the wastewaters were submitted to coagulation-flocculation tests with a wide range of biomass fly ashes dosage (expressed as Solid/Liquid - S/L - ratios). All supernatants were characterized for chemical and ecotoxicological parameters. The use of biomass fly ashes has reduced significantly the Pb concentration in the synthetic wastewater and in the wastewaters collected in the IWWTP. For example, the definitive coagulation-flocculation assays performed over the IWWTP effluent presented a very low concentration of Pb (0.35 mg/L) for the S/L ratio of 1.23 g/L. Globally, the ecotoxicological characterization of the supernatants resulting from the coagulation-flocculation assays of all wastewaters has indicated an overall reduction on the ecotoxicity of the crude wastewaters, due to the removal of Pb., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Our recent studies have demonstrated reproductive problems in white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) exposed to bleached kraft pulp mill effluent (BKME) at Jackfish Bay on Lake Superior. These fish exhibit delayed sexual maturity, reduced gonadal size, reduced secondary sexual characteristics, and circulating steroid levels depressed relative to those of reference populations. The present studies were designed to evaluate sites in the pituitary-gonadal axis of prespawning white sucker affected by BKME exposure. At the time of entry to the spawning stream, plasma levels of immunoreactive gonadotropin (GtH)-II (LH-type GtH) in male and female white sucker were 30- and 50-fold lower, respectively, than the levels in fish from a reference site. A single intraperitoneal injection of D-Arg6, Pro9N-Et sGnRH (sGnRH-A, 0.1 mg/kg) increased plasma GtH levels in male and female fish at both sites, although the magnitude of the response was greatly reduced in BKME-exposed fish. Fish at the BKME site did not ovulate in response to sGnRH-A, while 10 of 10 fish from the reference site ovulated within 6 hr. Plasma 17 alpha,20 beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20 beta-P) levels were depressed in BKME-exposed fish and unlike fish at the reference site, failed to increase in response to sGnRH-A. Testosterone levels in both sexes and 11-ketostestosterone levels in males were elevated in fish from the reference site but were not further increased by GnRH treatment. In contrast, BKME-exposed fish exhibit a transitory increase in testosterone levels in response to the GnRH analog. In vitro incubations of ovarian follicles obtained from fish at the BKME site revealed depressed basal secretion of testosterone and 17,20 beta-P and reduced responsiveness to the GtH analog human chorionic gonadotropin and to forskolin, a direct activator of adenylate cyclase. By comparison, ovarian follicles from fish collected at BKME and reference sites produced similar levels of prostaglandin E basally and in response to a phorbol ester and calcium ionophore A23187, suggesting that BKME effects on ovarian function are selective and do not reflect a general impairment of ovarian function. BKME-exposed fish had plasma levels of testosterone glucuronide proportionately lower than those of reference fish, suggesting that there are site differences in the peripheral metabolism of steroids. These studies demonstrate that BKME exposure affects reproduction by acting at multiple sites in the pituitary-gonadal axis.

A review of published literature was conducted to present the concentrations and composition profiles of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from significant sources to the environment. The major sources of PFAS to the environment are categorized under direct and indirect sources. The characteristic compounds and concentrations are summarized as found from direct sources such as manufacturing facilities, aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) applications, metal coating operations, and textile and paper coating operations; and from indirect sources such as landfills and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The major findings are: 1) among the aqueous matrices for which data were reviewed, groundwater impacted by AFFF contamination showed the highest median concentrations for both perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), while the second-highest median concentrations were associated with landfill leachates for PFOA and metal-plating sources for PFOS; 2) many of the unknown polyfluorinated precursors present in AFFF-impacted sites could potentially convert to persistent PFAS by abiotic or biotic transformation, and therefore could act as the long-term source of contamination to the environment; 3) part per billion (ppb) concentrations of PFAS were detected in water bodies surrounding fluorochemical manufacturing plants; 4) in consumer products such as textile, paper, and personal care products, PFOA concentrations were an order of magnitude higher compared to other PFAS; 5) biotransformation products such as fluorotelomer carboxylic acids (FTCAs) and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are detected in landfill leachates and WWTP effluents; and 6) many studies have shown increased PFAA concentrations in WWTP effluents compared to influents. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) material with abundant OH was successfully prepared by co-precipitation method, and a water purification system of Ni 2 Fe 0.25 Al 0.75 -LDH activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was constructed to rapidly degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) pollutants. The optimal conditions for the degradation of SMX in the system were as follows: 0.30 g/L Ni 2 Fe 0.25 Al 0.75 -LDH, 0.30 mM PMS, pH = 7 and 90 % SMX was removed in 10 min and almost completely in 40 min, which was consistent with the predicted results of response surface methodology (RSM) analysis. The abundant OH in Ni 2 Fe 0.25 Al 0.75 -LDH could form M(O)OSO 3 complexes with PMS, accelerating the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and promoting the removal of SMX. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra showed that SO 4 - , OH, O 2 - and 1 O 2 also existed in the system. The surface-bound SO 4 - and O 2 - contributed greatly to the removal of SMX and the electron transfer between metals was also conducive to the production of active substances. The possible degradation pathways and intermediates of SMX were proposed. The toxicity assessment software tool (T.E.S.T) and total organic carbon (TOC) results indicated that the Ni 2 Fe 0.25 Al 0.75 -LDH/PMS system could reduce the overall environmental risk of SMX to some extent. Temperature modulation of the synthesis process of MOF-derived composites is not well understood for changes in the peroxymonosulfate catalytic domain. This study synthesized a carbon-based nitrogen-doped (MN@C) MOF-derived composite catalyst derived from MIL-88B(Fe) (Materials Institute Lavoisier) by modulating temperature changes and calcination. Combined with density-functional theory calculations (DFT) analyses showed that changes in iron nanoparticles (FeNP) and CN content caused the alterations of the degradation pathways. MN@C-9 exhibited outstanding activation performance (100 % carbamazepine (CBZ) removal within 10 min). The system maintained efficient operation in different aqueous environments and a wide pH range and demonstrated efficient removal of many pollutants typical of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). After comprehensively analyzing the results of liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and toxicity prediction, the possible degradation pathways were reasonably speculated, and the toxicity of the byproducts was greatly reduced. A catalytic 2D nanocomposite membrane (CNC) was fabricated and used for the simultaneous removal of methylene blue (MB) and heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. Both molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) and graphene oxide (GO) were incorporated in a chitosan polymer matrix, and the fabricated CNC membrane exhibited performance as a nanofiltration membrane. Here MoS 2 activated H 2 O 2 to generate very reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radicals, allowing the catalytic breakdown of the organic dye contaminants and reducing heavy metal ions. Greater than 99% efficiencies were achieved for the simultaneous removal of methylene blue (MB) and the heavy metal Co 2+ . Moreover, significant removal efficiencies in the 89-96% range were demonstrated for other heavy metal ions of Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Ni 2+ . The generated ROS were trapped by terephthalic acid (TA) and confirmed by fluorescence emission spectroscopy. The used membrane was regenerated and reused with a flux recovery rate of more than 91% after 4 experimental cycles. Nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) has been broadly used in the treatment of chromium (Cr) pollution. However, conventional nZVI particles are prone to surface oxidation and particle agglomeration, limiting their effectiveness in contaminant removal. To address these issues, sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) was synthesized on the corn stover biochar (BC) surface for rapid removal of Cr(VI) from water. Sedimentation and column transport experiments demonstrated that S-nZVI@BC exhibits excellent dispersion and transport properties, efficiently removing Cr(VI) in the pH range of 2.5-5.0 and showing minimal impact from dissolved oxygen. The Fe 0 , Fe(Ⅱ), and S 2- components of the material, along with the leached Fe 2+ ions, contributed to the Cr(VI) removal. A portion of the removed Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) in solution, while another portion was adsorbed on the material's surface through precipitation, with 42.0% of Cr being adsorbed within 30 min. Cycling and water matrix interference experiments further demonstrated the material's excellent reusability and resistance to interference. Notably, the continuous Cr(VI) removal capability in column experiments and the reactivation potential of S-nZVI@BC highlight its promise for practical applications. The study verified the effectiveness of treating post-process underground coal gasification (UCG) wastewater, containing high loads of inorganic and organic pollutants, using constructed wetlands (CW) enhanced by hybrid adsorption and electrocoagulation (EC) techniques. Four different system configurations were tested: wetland, EC/wetland, adsorbent/wetland, and EC/adsorbent/wetland. Each experiment lasted 60 days. The feed and effluents from each treatment step were analysed for their basic physicochemical parameters such as metals and trace elements, phenols, sulphides, cyanides, total organic carbon (TOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), benzene, toluene, ethylene, xylene (BTEX), and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Systems with electrocoagulation proved to be effective in the case of metal removal. The best results were obtained for Fe, Ni, Sb and As (up to 96%, 98%, 94% and 82% respectively). The systems were ineffective in removing Mn. All tested systems showed the greatest effectiveness in the treatment of wastewater from phenols, BTEX and CN (almost 100% removal). CWs without preliminary electrocoagulation showed practically 100% effectiveness in removing BTEX after 14 days of treatment. Electrocoagulation was particularly effective in reduction of large quantity of PAH compounds (from 1228 μg/l to below 0.050 μg/l). Effective toxicity reduction from V class to II class after 60 days in comparison with meeting the requirements contained in the Best Available Techniques (BAT) document, showed that all tested systems were favorable in terms of UCG wastewater treatment. A significant decrease in toxicity was observed in just 14 days (around 90% reduction of toxicity measured in TU values for systems without adsorbent and around 75% for systems with adsorbent). Antibiotics (ATs) are ubiquitously detected in natural waters worldwide, and their tendency to co-migrate with microplastics (MPs) post-adsorption leads to heightened environmental risk. Research on the adsorption of ATs on MPs and their subsequent effects on the environmental risks is gaining significant attention globally. This adsorption process predominantly occurs through hydrophobic forces, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions and is influenced by various environmental factors. The interaction between MPs and ATs exhibited varying degrees of efficiency across different pH levels and ionic strengths. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been detected ubiquitously throughout the environment. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been identified as potential hotspots for the introduction of PFAS into the environment. Therefore, the occurrence, transformation, and transport of 18 PFAS in two WWTPs with varying treatment processes, prevailing land uses, and during two distinct time periods were investigated. Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) were installed at two WWTPs in Central Kentucky during April and July of 2022. PFAS concentrations typically increased from influent to effluent at both WWTPs, regardless of wastewater treatment processes, but changes in surface water concentrations from upstream to downstream of the effluent mixing zones varied. Both WWTPs discharged the 18 PFAS at higher loads than received, indicating prevalent transformation of PFAS precursors and non-measured PFAS analytes into measurable PFAS. Nearly all measured PFAS persisted in aqueous (86-98%) compartments rather than sediment or biosolids (2-14%). All biosolids had low content of PFAS with the dominant compound being PFOS (1.59-2.60 ng/g). Based on recent US EPA proposed maximum contaminant levels, hazard indexes for drinking water were exceeded in effluent and downstream surface waters at both WWTPs. The WWTP located in a heavily developed area and downstream from a firefighting training facility, had significantly higher concentrations of most PFAS species at most monitoring sites and was less impacted by sampling period compared to the WWTP located in a moderately developed, pastured area. Pharmaceuticals are emerging contaminants of global concern due to potential ecotoxicity and persistence in wastewater. Since conventional wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove micropollutants and the removal efficiency varies compound-specifically, pharmaceuticals pose a risk in the recipient aquatic environments. Adsorption by solid materials such as activated biochar has been suggested to offer a practical removal method. However, not much is known about the environmental risks of the adsorbents used in wastewater treatment. This study aimed to study the efficiency of activated biochar (ACB) to remove low and high concentration of specific pharmaceuticals including diclofenac (DI), tetracycline (TE), and cephalexin (CEP) from Milli-Q water (MQ) and artificial wastewater (AWW). Furthermore, the study evaluated the ecotoxicity of these pharmaceuticals, as well as pristine ACB and ACB loaded with pharmaceuticals (ACB-LP), in both MQ and AWW using Daphnia magna. The adsorbate concentration and matrix affected ACB's removal efficiency. Weaker adsorbent-adsorbate interactions and mass transfer resistance at lower adsorbate concentrations, along with interactions between wastewater constituents and pharmaceuticals were the leading factors contributing to this reduction. These experimental observations indicate practical considerations for using adsorbents in operational wastewater settings. Furthermore, ACB-LPs generally exhibited lower toxicity compared to ACB, attributed to the saturation of free binding sites and reduced adhesion to daphnids. Due to the increasing incidence of cancer, the consumption of highly toxic oncological drugs is continuously growing. Given the current lack of efficient technologies to remove/treat these toxic drugs in wastewater treatment plants, the environmental quality is compromised, and aquatic organisms are at risk. To address this critical environmental burden, a new strategy based on supported ionic liquids (SILs) for the simultaneous removal of oncologic drugs and toxicity reduction of aqueous samples is here proposed. Silica-based SILs functionalized with imidazolium-based and quaternary ammonium-based ILs were designed and kinetics and isotherm adsorption studies performed. Aiming to develop an adsorbent able to reduce the toxicity of aqueous samples contaminated with oncological drugs, the toxicity reduction was appraised using the model organism Danio rerio. The obtained results disclose that among the studied SILs, the [Si][N 3888 ]Cl (silica functionalized with propyltrioctylammonium chloride) is the best adsorption material (maximum adsorption capacity, q max  = 67.64 mg g -1 ), with a fast adsorption rate (<20 min). Ammonia is a common and major pollutant in aquatic systems. Excessive ammonia has toxic effects on hepatopancreas in aquatic animals. In this study, we investigated the toxic effects of acute ammonia (concentration: 10 mg/L; test duration: 48 h) stress on the hepatopancreas of a freshwater mollusk, Solenaia oleivora. Transcriptome analysis identified 3355 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 1432 up-regulated and 1923 down-regulated genes. Many DEGs were associated with immune and stress responses, including heat shock proteins, pattern recognition receptors, and lysozyme. In addition, some DEGs were related to ammonia transport and detoxification, such as aquaporins, K + channel, V-ATPase, cytochrome p450, glutathione transferase, and glutamine synthetase. Physiological analysis showed that ammonia stress increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) and non-specific immune enzymes (acid phosphatase) and the levels of liver injury markers (malonaldehyde, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine transaminase). TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling assay revealed that ammonia stress induced apoptosis in the hepatopancreas. These results indicated the toxic effects of ammonia on hepatopancreas on the immune response, oxidative stress, ammonia transport and detoxification of S. oleivora. Extensive efforts are being made globally to install units to remediate contaminants in groundwaters used for drinking, but are these units being installed in the optimum locations? Here, we explore this question for Bihar, an eastern Indian state with a high reliance on groundwater for drinking water. Bihar is impacted by groundwater quality issues, notably in relation to the geogenic contaminants arsenic (As), iron (Fe) and fluoride (F - ). We map the distribution of groundwater quality remediation units for As, Fe and F - , and which were implemented from 2016 by the Government of Bihar under the aegis of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED). The majority of the reported remediation units for As are within a distance of 10 km from the main branch of the River Ganges (Ganga), whereas the remediation units for Fe are exclusively present in the eastern and north-eastern districts of Bihar. All of the remediation units for F - are located in districts south of the River Ganges. The distributions of the installed remediation units are compared with the distribution and concentration of the target contaminants based on a representative Bihar-wide groundwater sampling campaign reported previously by our group. Inconsistencies are identified in many cases between the distribution of implemented remediation units and areas where elevated levels of the contaminant have been found. Some possible reasons for the apparent mismatches are discussed and include: prioritizing installation on the basis of now out-of-date contaminant distribution maps based on strongly non-representative sampling strategies, and administrative and operational convenience. Our study highlights that there are likely extensive areas in Bihar with groundwater quality issues where necessary interventions are required, but not yet received, whilst there seems to be widespread installation of remediation units where the need is less indicated. Arsenic, a poisonous and carcinogenic heavy metal in drinking water, presents severe health risks to humans, including skin lesions, neurological damage, and circulatory disorders. Despite extensive research efforts have been carried out on removing arsenate (As(V)) using membrane technologies, however, there remains a critical need to further enhance membrane removal efficacy to achieve maximum reusability. Thus, to minimize this challenge, herein we explore the impact of S-functionalized Mxene coating over the surface of quaternary ammonium poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide)/polyvinyl alcohol (QPPO/PVA) anion exchange AEM membrane against As(V) removal. To optimize and validate adsorption efficacy, response surface methodology (RSM) study was carried out using a central composite design (CCD) with R 2  = 0.995. The significance of these variables was also confirmed by CCD matrix, yielding statistically significant results (p < 0.0001). Adsorption efficacy was further enhanced by employing different machine learning (ML) regression models to finely tune experimental parameters. Among ML models, Random Forest Regression (RFR) has shown highest predictive accuracy (R 2  = 0.929, RMSE = 4.57 mg L -1 ) and identified As(V) concentration as the most influential factor affecting adsorption efficacy. ML-optimization has shown maximum adsorption efficacy at pH (3), contact time (5 min), and As(V) concentration (50 mg L -1 ). Freundlich isotherm model has shown adsorption capacity of 413 mg/g (R 2  = 0.997), while pseudo-second-order kinetic model reflected R 2 of 0.989. Thermodynamic assessments (ΔG ᵒ , ΔH ° , ΔS ° ) confirmed the process as spontaneous. Microplastic (MP) distribution in river sediment, influenced by water regimes and pollution sources, remains understudied in the current literature. This study examines the combined impacts of seasonal variation and waterway differences on MP concentration in the sediment of the Saigon River and its tributaries, while identifying potential sources. Paired sediment samples were collected from eleven sites along the river and its tributaries during rainy and dry seasons. MPs from these 44 samples were separated, quantified, and characterized for a comprehensive assessment. The results revealed that MP concentrations in sediments ranged from 140 to 1200 items kg -1 , with predominant characteristics of fiber particles, white color, and particle sizes ranging from 200 to 500 μm. During the rainy season, MP concentrations were similar between the river (584 items kg -1 ) and tributaries (553 items kg -1 ), while during the dry season, tributaries exhibited statistically higher MP concentrations (737 items kg -1 ) than the river (351 items kg -1 ). Notably, the river, despite being farther from the sources, had a higher proportion of smaller MPs (<200 μm), while larger particles (>200 μm) were more prevalent in tributaries. These discrepancies are attributed to the combined impacts of water flow patterns and pollution sources, derived from residential, industrial, and agricultural activities. In brief, MP pollution in the river and tributary sediments is influenced by the interplay of seasonal variation and waterway characteristics, determined by water flow patterns and pollution sources. Mercury in fish is a serious human health concern. Mercury is a widespread contaminant that exceeds health effect thresholds in many fish species and waterbodies. The objectives were to determine the spatiotemporal variation of mercury in fish tissue for several fish species across thousands of lakes and to assess the potential use of fish length standardization and statistical models to improve fish consumption guidelines and impairments determinations in lake-rich areas. The results showed that fish length, species, ecoregion, lake size, latitude, color dissolved organic matter, water clarity, and zebra mussel presence influenced mercury concentrations. Fish mercury concentrations were generally higher from 1967 to 1990, and since 1990 there was no obvious trend. We found that a statistical model provided estimates of mean mercury concentrations by fish total length that were unbiased and with greater confidence than those based solely on sample statistics. Wastewater effluents are a continuous source of pharmaceuticals in water bodies, which pose a serious environmental threat to aquatic ecosystems. This work provides a comprehensive technical, environmental and cost assessments of different advanced quaternary treatments for wastewater effluents, with special focus on novel Non-Thermal Plasma technology. For this porpouse Non-Thermal Plasma, Sand Filtration + Ozonation, Ultrafiltration, Ultrafiltration + Nanofiltration and Ultrafiltration + Reverse Osmosis technologies were compared with UV disinfection-based technology. This work applies the Life Cycle Analysis tool for the impact environmental assessment using both ReciPE 2016(H) method and, for a more detailed analysis of the contribution of pharmaceuticals to freshwater ecotoxicity category of impact, the USETOX method, which was integrated with 7 new characterisation factors. The results obtained showed overall removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals always higher than 80%, with performances in descending order of Ultrafiltration + Reverse Osmosis > Sand Filtration + Ozonation > Ultrafiltration + Nanofiltration > Non-Thermal Plasma, being Sand Filtration + Ultraviolet disinfection and standalone Ultrafiltration comparatively not suitable for pharmaceuticals removal. Regarding the target pharmaceuticals proposed on the EU Directive 271/91 revision, the Non-Thermal Plasma perform better towards venlafaxine than Sand Filtration + Ozonation, and towards diclofenac and carbamazepine than Ultrafiltration + Nanofiltration. Ultrafiltration + Nanofiltration and Non-Thermal Plasma showed better environmental performance than Sand Filtration + Ozonation and Ultrafiltration + Reverse Osmosis in 7 out of 18 categories of impact (ReciPe method), with Ultrafiltration + Nanofiltration being more advantageous than Non-Thermal Plasma in human and ecotoxicity-related categories of impact, and Non-Thermal Plasma more advantageous in Global Warming, Fossil Resource Scarcity, and Fine Particulate Matter Formation. Regrading Freshwater Ecotoxicity (USEtox method), the quaternary treatment configuration and its energy demand affect the Freshwater final value of impact more than the presence of pharmaceuticals. Poyang lake (PYL), as China's largest freshwater lake, has been suffering from increasing total phosphorus (TP) pollution associated with rapid basinal socio-economic development. However, anthropogenic phosphorus stressors were rarely examined in PYL basin due to its large-scale and complex river-lake connection water system, hampering phosphorus pollution control efforts. In this study, water pollution stress from multiple anthropogenic activities is quantitatively examined in PYL basin based on a newly developed framework coupling grey water footprint (GWF) analysis with the SPARROW model. Results show that the phosphorus source-sink process in PYL basin has been well simulated by SPARROW model quantifying an overall TP delivery rate of 0.39, with catchments closer to PYL showing higher delivery rate of phosphorus (up to over 0.8). The GWF analysis demonstrates that anthropogenic phosphorus sources have imposed much higher pollution stress on PYL than its inflowing rivers, with twelve catchments nearby PYL identified as critical source areas of TP contamination. Agricultural farming, livestock & poultry production, and urban household are recognized as the dominant anthropogenic stressors burdening water environment of PYL. Based on these, policy recommendations are provided for advancing control of the phosphorus pollution stressors. This work aims to apply carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from agriculture cellulosic waste (agro wastes), produced via an economically and eco-friendly single-step method, to be used into cellulose acetate composite microfibrous membranes as an innovative solution specifically designed to adsorb methylene blue (MB) and other cationic dyes that are present in various water effluents. Batch adsorption tests were conducted, with variations in contact time (1-24 h), initial MB concentration (25-300 ppm), and adsorbent doses (1-20 g/L). The maximum adsorption capacity of the membrane was 198 mg/g with an initial concentration of 300 ppm at 298 K. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the process is endothermic. Equilibrium experimental data for MB adsorption onto electrospun adsorbent were fitted using different isothermal models, with the Freundlich model showing the best fit. The pseudo-second-order model accurately described the kinetic data with high reliability (R 2  > 0.99), and the calculated adsorption capacity was very close to the experimental data. N-CQDs loaded membranes were also tested for removing methyl violet and rhodamine B, demonstrating remarkably high dye removal efficiency. The underlying adsorption mechanism was also reported. Finally, it is worth mentioning that composite adsorbents can be efficiently applied to actual industrial cases because of the possibility of reusing them, opening the route to the fabrication of novel and highly performant adsorbents. These findings underscore N-CQDs' effectiveness in enhancing pollutant removal efficiency from wastewater, highlighting their environmental benefits and promoting a more sustainable approach to water treatment. The pervasive issue of microplastics in aquatic environments presents a formidable challenge to traditional water treatment methodologies, including those utilizing KMnO 4 . This study pioneers advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) method aimed at improving the degradation of PE microplastics by employing a dual treatment strategy that combines KMnO 4 oxidation with UV irradiation. Detailed analysis of the surface modifications and chemical functional groups of the treated PE microplastics revealed the establishment of Mn-O-Mn linkages on their surfaces. Weight reductions of 3.9%, 4.9%, and 7.5% were observed for the KMnO 4 /UVA, KMnO 4 /UVB, and KMnO 4 /UVC treatments over seven days, respectively. The emergence of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups played a crucial role in accelerating the degradation process. Notably, the combined application of UVC rays and KMnO 4 resulted in the most effective degradation of PE microplastics observed in our study. The process significantly enhanced the formation of MnO 2 particles from KMnO 4 oxidation, with concentrations ranging from 0.036 to 0.070 mM for KMnO 4 /UVA, 0.066-0.097 mM for KMnO 4 /UVB, and 0.086-0.180 mM for KMnO 4 /UVC. Furthermore, the influence of varying pH levels, KMnO 4 concentrations, and different water sources on the degradation efficacy was investigated. The pivotal role of free radicals and reactive manganese species in promoting the degradation of PE microplastics was identified. Pure water is necessary for healthy life; however natural ground water has many toxic metals. Before drinking, it must be free from toxic metals that commonly causes cancer. For example, arsenic is hazardous element but unfortunately it is naturally present in ground water. Due to its high solubility, removal of arsenic from water is not easy. In recent decades, presence of arsenic in ground water has been reported in many areas of Pakistan. Purpose of current project is to estimate and eliminate arsenic contents from the ground drinking water of Tribal Belt of DG Khan. For the comprehensive survey, 200 water samples were collected from the areas where large proportion of ground water is being consumed for drinking. In this work, relatively cheaper and effective adsorbent namely S‒CuFe 2 O 4 have been synthesized for the quick removal of arsenic. Arsenic contents were converted to the arsenomolybdate complex (AMC) and this complex was then adsorbed on S‒CuFe 2 O 4 . Morphology and chemical characteristics have been evaluated via XRD, SEM, FT-IR, Raman, TGA, EDX, AFM and XPS techniques. Additionally, various kinetic models were employed to confirm and validate the adsorption phenomena. In this study, the experimental and modeling of oily pollutants (crude oil, asphaltene, and maltene) uptake by ZIF-8/carbon fiber nanostructure was investigated. The influence of pollutant type, concentration, ionic strength, and sorption time on uptake was systematically examined using a batch absorption system. Then, the experimental data of uptake was modeled using cascade forward (CFNN), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), radial basis function (RBF), and generalized regression (GRNN) neural networks. ZIF-8/carbon fiber nanostructure distinguished by its high hydrophobicity (WCA of 150°) and a complex meso-micro pore structure, demonstrated remarkable efficiency in oil pollutant uptake. Furthermore, the modeling results unveiled that the CFNN-LM model yielded superior predictions, achieving an impressive accuracy rate, as approximately 98% of the uptake data demonstrated an average absolute percent relative error (AAPRE,%) below 3%. Moreover, sensitivity analysis showed that the concentration of pollutants had the most notable impact on the pollutant uptake. Furthermore, the uptake values exhibited an upward trend with elevated concentrations of the pollutant and extended process time, while showing a decline with an increase in ionic strength. These results affirm the reliability of the proposed CFNN-LM model in accurately estimating uptake amounts during the separation process. The extensive use of dyes presents a significant safety concern for the reuse of water resources, highlighting the critical need for a rapid and efficient degradation method for dye mixtures in wastewater. This study introduces a degradation system based on an array type underwater bubble discharge plasma specifically designed to treat a dye mixture wastewater containing methylene blue (MB) and methyl violet 2B (MV2B). Analysis of the optical and electrical characteristics reveals that the device experiences minimal temperature increase, with the highest intensity of the band associated with N 2 in the emission spectra, and discharges occurring predominantly during the rising and falling edges of a pulse cycle. Experimental results demonstrate that the most effective degradation efficiencies (MB = 94.83%, MV2B = 93.48%) are achieved at an initial dye concentration of 50 mg/L, a power supply frequency of 6 kHz, an air flow rate of 2.5 SLM and an initial electrical conductivity of 50 μS/cm. The existence of antibiotics in water sources poses substantial hazards to both the environment and public health. To effectively monitor and combat this problem, accurate predictive models are essential. This research focused on employing machine learning (ML) techniques to construct some models for analyzing the adsorption capacity of ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic from contaminated water. The robustness of ten machine learning algorithms was evaluated using performance metrics such as the Coefficient of determination (R 2 ), Mean Square Error (MSE), Median Absolute Error (MedAE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Correlation coefficient (R), Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE), and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The hyperparameters of the ML models were fine-tuned using the Bayesian optimization algorithm. The optimized models were comprehensively evaluated using feature importance analysis to quantify the relative significance of operational variables accurately. After a thorough assessment and comparison of various machine learning models, it was evident that the HistGradientBoosting (HGB) model outperformed others in terms of CIP adsorption performance. This was supported by their low MAE value of 0.1865 and high R 2 value of 0.9999. The modeling projected the highest antibiotic adsorption (99.28%) under optimized conditions, including 10 mg/L of CIP, 357 mg/L of CuWO 4 @TiO 2 adsorbent, a contact time of 60 min at room temperature, and near neutral pH (7.5). Electrocoagulation of landfill leachate has been widely investigated, however, only few reports include the reuse of the treated water. In this work, treated leachate is evaluated as irrigation water. The main obstacle is the high Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR=Na + /(Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ )/2. Reducing this indicator involves decreasing Na + and increasing Mg 2+ or Ca 2+ . Sodium concentration reduction is difficult by electrochemical methods (E 0  = -2.71 V); Ca 2+ increasing is not feasible as it precipitates. Hence, the use of different Al-Mg anodes was tested tending to increase Mg 2+ concentration in the treated water The alloy 88%wtAl-12%wtMg was able to remove 52.9% of COD, 98.1% of turbidity, 97.9% of color, obtaining a SAR of 8.2 meq·L -1 , total hardness (TH) of 64.2 meq·L -1 and a soluble sodium percentage (SSP) of 75.8 meq·L -1 . This was achieved by working at a current density of 15 mA cm -2 , a treatment time of 15 min and a pH 5.0. The phytotoxicity of the treated leachate was evaluated by the germination index using Lactuca Sativa L., reaching a value of 83.2%, which is considered excellent for irrigation water. During growth, 3-4 primary leaves were observed in seedings after 21 days, similar to when potable water was used. Enhancing the biodegradability of old landfill leachate is vital for the efficient treatment or resource utilization of municipal solid waste. Electrochemical pretreatment emerges as a promising technology for transformation of refractory dissolved organic matter (DOM). However, the specific impact of polarity on improving biodegradability of DOM remains unclear. In this study, a divided electrolyzer was used to explore the changes in the biodegradability of DOM in old landfill leachate during electrolysis. Meanwhile, the correlation mechanism between BOD 5 variation and DOM evolution was explored by spectroscopy and Maldi-TOF-MS analysis. Results shown that different polarities all have positive effect on enhancing the biodegradability of DOM, while the structural changes related with BOD 5 are depending on the polarity. In the anode chamber, electrochemical oxidation (EO) generates and eliminates carboxyl groups. Additionally, EO concurrently eliminates humic-like substances, which are challenging for microorganisms to degrade, and protein-like substances, which are easily degradable by microorganisms. This creates a competitive mechanism that coexist the promotion and inhibition for biodegradability. In the cathode chamber, electrochemical reduction (ER) transforms DOM components, accumulating easily useable protein components for microorganisms. Kinetic studies show that EO related BOD 5 changes are aptly described by a competition model, considering both generation and removal of bioavailable components. ER related BOD 5 changes suit a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Antibiotics-polluted wastewater, likely causing the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), can be effectively remediated by photocatalytic degradation driven by endless solar energy. Herein, bimetallic Au/Ag is deposited on In 2 O 3 surface via a one-step sintering process followed by a controllable chemical reduction approach. Under natural sunlight irradiation, the optimal Au/Ag/In 2 O 3 (UGI-1.0) photocatalyst possesses a considerable norfloxacin (NOR) degradation rate constant of 0.013 min -1 , which is 3.25, 1.63, and 1.86 times higher than that of In 2 O 3 , Ag/In 2 O 3 , and Au/In 2 O 3 respectively. The effect of many water characteristics (e.g., humic acid, water bodies, pH values, and coexisting anions) on the photodegradation performance of NOR over UGI-1.0 is investigated. Moreover, other persistent organic pollutants (ofloxacin, phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and rhodamine B) can also be degraded over UGI-1.0, suggesting its universal oxidation capacity. To settle the challenge of powder photocatalyst recovery, the UGI-1.0 photocatalyst is coated on a frosted glass sheet, which exhibits outstanding activity and stability for degrading NOR. The bimetallic Au/Ag deposited on In 2 O 3 promote its photo-absorption, and enhance its photoinduced charge separation and transfer efficiency by serving as electron accepter, leading to the boosted activity of Au/Ag/In 2 O 3 catalysts. Particularly, the cultivation of staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and cabbage seeds reveals the efficient toxicity reduction of NOR by photocatalytic degradation and the nontoxic characteristic of UGI-1.0 catalyst. Seeking highly efficient adsorbents for pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) removal has been a worldwide continuing endeavor. In this study, a new 3D composite material was synthesized by covalently anchoring Poly(m-Phenylenediamine) onto 3D polyvinyl alcohol modified foam framework (PmPD-MF-PVA). PmPD-MF-PVA was characterized and evaluated for its efficacy in removing diclofenac (DCF), a commonly detected PPCPs in both wastewater and surface water. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of PmPD-MF-PVA toward DCF was 1.5 times higher than that of PmPD-MF. The addition of PVA increased deposition area of PmPD, and promoted PmPD loading on the foam surface. Batch adsorption experiments exhibited that the adsorption of DCF was fitted well with Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The maximum adsorption capacity of PmPD-MF-PVA was 115 mg/g. Meanwhile, PmPD-MF-PVA exhibited better separation ability than the hard-to-separate PmPD. Characterization analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation elucidated the main mechanisms of DCF adsorption on PmPD-MF-PVA. Hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions were main drivers for DCF adsorption, followed by electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic forces. A key component in a nation's economic progress is industrialization, however, hazardous heavy metals that are detrimental to living things are typically present in the wastewater produced from various industries. Therefore, before wastewater is released into the environment, it must be treated to reduce the concentrations of the various heavy metals to maximum acceptable levels. Even though several biological, physical, and chemical remediation techniques are found to be efficient for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater, these techniques are costly and create more toxic secondary pollutants. However, phytoremediation is inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and simple to be applied as a green technology for heavy metal detoxification in wastewater. The present study provides a thorough comprehensive review of the mechanisms of phytoremediation, with an emphasis on the possible utilization of plant species for the treatment of wastewater containing heavy metals. We have discussed the concept, its applications, advantages, challenges, and independent variables that determine how successful and efficient phytoremediation could be in the decontamination of heavy metals from wastewater. Additionally, we argue that the standards for choosing aquatic plant species for target heavy metal removal ought to be taken into account, as they influence various aspects of phytoremediation efficiency. Following the comprehensive and critical analysis of relevant literature, aquatic plant species are promising for sustainable remediation of heavy metals. The increasing urbanization and land development poses significant water quality challenges in urban areas. Stormwater control measures, such as bioretention basins, are implemented to mitigate these issues by managing storm volumes and improving water quality. Despite their widespread use, the effectiveness of bioretention basins in removing pollutants, particularly heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), remains unclear. This study evaluates the treatment efficiency of two stormwater bioretention basins (Kyle and TPC) situated within the critical Edwards Aquifer recharge zone in Texas. Over a 1-year period, influent and effluent samples were collected and analyzed to assess removal of heavy metals and PAHs. Soil samples were also collected to assess the distribution of metals in basin soil. The results reveal significant differences in removal efficiency for Fe, Cu, and Zn between the two basins. Within Kyle, there was a significant load reduction of Fe (77%), Cr (74%), and Cu (65%). Within TPC, a significant load reduction was observed for Fe (68%), Cu (84%), and Zn (82%). The results from soil samples indicated significant difference between summer and winter samples for Fe, Mg, Zn and Pb in Kyle while Pb was the only metal that significantly varied between seasons in TPC samples. The high molecular weight PAHs detected in TPC suggested that the sources likely originated from industrial and transportation activities. The increasing chemical pollution of the drinking water is widely concerned. Large number of organic contaminants cannot be removed by conventional water treatment technology due to their low concentration, and long-term exposure may pose significant risks to human health. Which organic contaminants in drinking water should be given more attention has been a topic of great concern in recent years. To identify the organic contaminants that need attention, this research proposes an improved health risk screening method to quantitatively analyze the risks of accumulation, persistence, toxicity, and antibiotic resistance. Compared with conventional method, 26 compounds were added to the improved screening list, including 9 DBPs (e.g., NDMA), 3 antibiotics (e.g., oxytetracycline), PFNA and other compounds. Overall, antibiotics and plasticizers rose in the risk rankings. From the perspective of the proportion of total risk value, a single risk plays a decisive role (more than 99%) in the ranking. This change suggests that antibiotic resistance and the accumulation of organic matter are as important as their toxic risks to humans. 58 compounds were recommended for the priority control organic contaminants list in drinking water. Fluorene-9-bisphenol (BHPF), as an alternative to bisphenol A, is now increasingly used in plastic products. The accumulation of BHPF in the water environment has posed potential safety risks to aquatic organisms. Unfortunately, the toxicity of BHPF on the physiological metabolism of aquatic animals remains unclear, especially on the molecular mechanisms of BHPF kidney toxicity and antagonizing BHPF toxicity. Quercetin (QCT), a naturally occurring flavonoid, has been reported to mitigate the toxic effects on aquatic organisms induced by a variety of environmental contaminants. It is unclear whether QCT can be a candidate for mitigating BHPF toxicity. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of QCT on BHPF-induced apoptosis and elucidated the possible mechanism of the protective effect mediated by QCT. We treated epithelioma papulosum cyprini cells (EPCs) with 20 μM of BHPF and/or 20 μM of QCT, and the results showed that BHPF significantly increased the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from EPCs, decreased the expression of SIRT3, and initiated endogenous apoptosis. Molecular docking provides evidence for the interaction of QCT and SIRT3. Our intervention with Honokiol (HKL) showed that QCT or HKL treatment significantly attenuated BHPF-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondrial apoptosis (mtApoptosis) in EPCs, and activated mitophagy, restoring autophagy flux. To further investigate the specific mechanism of the protective effect of QCT, we intervened with Cyclosporin A (CsA), and our results suggest that QCT activation of SIRT3-promoted regulation of mitophagy may be a therapeutic strategy to attenuate the toxic effects of BHPF on EPCs. In conclusion, our findings suggest that BHPF induces oxidative damage and mtApoptosis in EPCs and that QCT activates mitophagy and improves autophagic flux through activation of SIRT3, thereby alleviating apoptosis mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction in EPCs. MXenes, such as Ti 3 C 2 T x , demonstrate tremendous potential as heavy metal adsorbents due to their abundant reaction sites, high hydrophilicity, controllable interlayer spacing, and inherent reduction ability. However, their structural dependent pollutant removal performances and the related mechanisms are far less studied. Therefore, the removing abilities of Cr(VI) from water on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with different structures (multilayer (ML-) and delaminated (DL-) Ti 3 C 2 T x ) synthesized via several etching techniques were evaluated. Focusing on the most effective ML- and DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x obtained by acid/fluoride salt etching, the impacts of structural variations on the Cr(VI) removal performances were explored. Both ML- and DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x demonstrate outstanding Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction capabilities, achieving equilibrium within 500 min with capacities of 92.7 and 205 mg/g, respectively. The differences in removal mechanisms stemed from the varying adsorption and reduction capacities of two MXenes. ML-Ti 3 C 2 T x , with lower surface area and porosity, had low adsorption capacity but superior reduction ability, efficiently converting most Cr(VI) to Cr(III) (66.8%). Conversely, DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited better removal efficiency but a lower capacity for reduction (45.7%). Notably, although the partial reduction of DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x to TiO 2 results in its limited chemical reduction capacity, Ti 3 C 2 T x might serve as a co-catalyst for TiO 2 , boosting the photoresponsiveness of DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x or TiO 2 through Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 heterojunctions, thereby facilitating photocatalysis to realize the reduction of Cr(VI). Synthetic dyes produced by the textile dyeing industry and released into wastewater contribute significantly to water pollution. This study explores the efficacy and versatility of a novel multi-electrode dielectric barrier discharge (MEDBD) plasma system that mainly generates ozone (O 3 generator) and nitric oxide (NO generator) selectively to degrade various synthetic textile dyes, namely Methylene Blue (MB), Congo Red (CR), Methyl Orange (MO), Crystal Violet (CV), and Evans Blue (EB). Plasma achieved selective enrichment of O 3 and NO by utilizing optimized plasma generation duty cycles of 15% and 100%, respectively. The proposed O 3 generator plasma involves plasma-generated aqua electron impact, excited species, and reactive oxygen species notably O 3 , which degrades synthetic textile dyes into simple forms such as CO 2 , H 2 O, and N 2 . This approach achieved over 95% degradation of the above synthetic textile dyes when employing the O 3 enriched plasma with 2.44 ± 0.21 W of power. Ecotoxicological evaluation, including microbial, human cell, and phytotoxicity evaluations of the O 3 generator plasma for MB and CR dye-contaminated water, underscored the potential of this plasma system for environmentally friendly dye degradation. Fluoride contamination in groundwater has become a global environmental issue. Magnesium oxide (MgO) has demonstrated effectiveness as an adsorbent in treating fluoride pollution in groundwater. However, its use in powder and fine granular form often results in losses during the adsorption process, posing challenges for post-treatment recovery and potentially causing secondary environmental pollution. In this study, two novel fluoride adsorbents [rice husk (RH) and spent coffee grounds (SCG)-based magnesium oxide (MgO) biochar composites (MgO/RH and MgO/SCG)] were developed to cleanup fluoride-polluted groundwater. During the adsorbent synthesis process, RH and SCG biochar were pyrolyzed at 500 °C and modified by calcination using MgO. Both MgO/RH and MgO/SCG surfaces exhibited abundant pore structures and formed MgO crystal phases. Batch experiments results show that when the MgO/RH and MgO/SCG material dosages were 1 g/L, fluoride removal rates reached 80% and 86% respectively. The isotherms and kinetics of fluoride adsorption with MgO/RH and MgO/SCG followed the Langmuir isotherm equation and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum fluoride adsorption capacities of MgO/RH and MgO/SCG were 63.47 mg/g and 141.98 mg/g, respectively, indicating these materials used mono-layer adsorption mechanism for fluoride adsorption. The addition of MgO into the pores of porous adsorbent materials effectively increased their reactive sites and enhanced the adsorption performance of carbon materials. Particularly, SCG biochar had a richer pore structure than RH biochar, providing a larger contact surface area, facilitating the effective dispersion and doping of MgO into the pores. Therefore, MgO/SCG composite exhibited excellent fluoride adsorption properties in water, indicating the potential for developing a new type of MgO-modified SCG adsorbent material with green prospects. This composite effectively mitigated fluoride contamination, reducing the fluoride concentration in groundwater. The content of sulfate and heavy metals in acidic mine drainage (AMD) exceeds the standard severely, and the acidity is extremely high, causing serious harm to the environment. SRB can efficiently remove sulfates through its own metabolism. The treatment of AMD by SRB faces problems such as carbon source scarcity and heavy metal ion toxicity to SRB. In this study, corn cob and polycaprolactone were embedded to prepare a novel slow-release carbon source (PSCL), which simultaneously achieves carbon source supply and metal ion removal. Through adsorption isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics studies, and various characterization analyses, it is known that PSCL removes Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ through ion exchange, physical and chemical adsorption, electrostatic attraction, and surface complexation. PSCL carbon release experiments and characterization results confirm that its surface carbon distribution is dense, the molecular weight of DOM in the leachate is small, the degree of humification is low, and it has a porous structure, making it a good carbon release material and biological attachment. The experimental results of PSCL enhanced SRB treatment of AMD showed that the removal rates of SO 4 2- , Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ could be increased to 97.48%, 98.11% and 90.42%, respectively, with a effluent pH of 7.05, effectively improving the water quality of AMD. Electrochemical degradation of the antiretroviral drug raltegravir was investigated using different electrode materials (platinum, glassy carbon and boron-doped diamond). After preliminary studies with the use of multivariate chemometric method, electrochemical degradation was conducted with a boron-doped diamond electrode and phosphate buffer at pH 9. To assess the role of different variable in degradation kinetics, final experiments were conducted with varying applied current densities, chloride and humic acid concentrations, and using a natural river water sample. The results showed that raltegravir degradation generally followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The degradation rate was inhibited by the presence of humic acid, while increasing the applied current density or chloride concentration enhanced the removal of raltegravir. Degradation process performed in the river water sample followed second-order kinetics and led to almost complete degradation of raltegravir within 30 min, highlighting the impact of natural matrices on reaction kinetics. Total organic carbon analysis was utilized, showing that even rapid degradation of the parent compound did not ensure total mineralization. Additionally, the energy consumption analysis revealed that the presence of chloride ions significantly improves efficiency of the organic carbon elimination. With the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry fourteen transformation products were elucidated, and their aquatic toxicity was predicted using in silico approach. This research has evaluated the MPs distribution, characteristics, and potential threats of MPs in surface water and sediments from Hatiya Island. The results showed that the abundance of MPs was 139 ± 44 items/m 3 in surface water and 493 ± 80 items/kg dw in sediments, indicating higher levels of MPs contamination in sediment samples. Fibers were the predominant kind of microplastics, and microscopic sizes (0.3-1.5 mm) MPs were generally more frequent and largely present in both the surface water and sediments. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that polyethylene terephthalate was the major polymer component of microplastics in surface water, whereas polyethylene was the most abundant polymer in sediments. MPs contamination risk was examined based on multiple risk assessment models. Nemerow pollution index (NPI) and pollutant load index (PLI) show minimal pollution levels of MPs. But potential hazard index (PHI), potential ecological risk factor (Er), and potential ecological risk index (RI), indicate severe MPs contamination due to the presence of polyurethane, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, epoxy that were hazardous MPs and exhibited a critical concern for MPs risk.
