The location and the conformational changes of proteins/enzymes immobilized within Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are still poorly investigated and understood. Bovine serum albumin (BSA), used as a model protein, was immobilized within two different zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-zni and ZIF-8). Pristine ZIFs and BSA@ZIFs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, micro-FTIR and confocal Raman spectroscopy to characterize MOFs structure and the protein location in the materials. Moreover, the secondary structure and conformation changes of BSA after immobilization on both ZIFs were studied with FTIR. BSA is located both in the inner and on the outer surface of MOFs, forming domains that span from the micro- to the nanoscale. Hypothesis: Organic solvents are often used for cleaning highly water-sensitive artifacts in modern/contemporary art. Due to the toxicity of most solvents, confining systems must be formulated to use these fluids in a safe and controlled way. We propose here castor oil (CO) organogels, obtained thorough cost-effective sustainable polyurethane crosslinking. This methodology is complementary to previously demonstrated hydrogels, when conservators opt for organic solvents over aqueous formulations., Experiments: The gels were characterized via Small-angle Neutron Scattering and rheology before and after swelling in two organic solvents commonly adopted in cleaning paintings. The removal of a photo-aged acrylic-ketonic varnish was evaluated under visible and ultraviolet light, and with FTIR 2D imaging., Findings: The new gels are dry systems that can be easily stored and loaded with solvents before use. Their nanoscale organization, viscoelasticity and cleaning action are controlled changing the amount of crosslinking, the polymeric backbone, and the loaded solvents. The fluids are confined in the nanosized polymeric mesh of the gels, which are highly retentive, granting controlled release over delicate paint layers, and transparent, allowing monitoring of the cleaning process. Hypothesis: Soot is a black powder-like substance consisting of carbonaceous amorphous particles, formed by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. In the last decades, industrial research on lubricant oils has grown to develop more efficient formulations, mainly to reduce the formation of soot in oil so to increase engine lifetime. The comprehension of the mechanism of soot formation and particles growth/aggregation in times during real applications is of fundamental importance for the design of better performing lubricants., Experiments: In this work, we report on a multi-technique investigation of soot-in-oil samples, drawn from the oil sump of a direct-injected heavy-duty diesel engine at increasing working times in a standard engine test. Scanning Electron Microscopy, Small Angle X-ray Scattering and Dynamic Light Scattering are employed to study the evolution in term of soot size, morphology and fractal dimensions., Findings: Our results evidence that, in a complete lubricant formulation, exhaust oil viscosity evolution correlates well with the increase of soot amount inside the oil. Moreover, the growth of both primary soot particles and aggregates during the engine test is limited to about 24 and 200 nm, respectively, because of the active role of the dispersant present in the investigated oil., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Hypothesis: Dental decay, asa consequence of exposure to acidic foods and drinks, represents one of the most important tooth pathologies. Recently, enamel and dentinal surface remineralization using hydroxyapatite nano- and microparticles has been proposed; however, commercial remineralizing toothpastes are quite expensive, mostly due to the high costs of hydroxyapatite. Hence, we propose a thermoresponsive hybrid nanocomposite material as filler for tooth defects. The use of thermoresponsive composite particles aims at filling exposed dentinal tubules in response to a change of temperature in the oral cavity. In addition, the presence of the organic matrix contributes to the occlusion of the dentinal tubules, therefore reducing the needed amount of hydroxyapatite., Experiments: Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide microgels containing different amounts of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were prepared via radical polymerization in the presence of N-N'-methylenebisacrylamide as cross-linker followed by mechanical grinding. The nano- and microstructure of the hydrogels and their thermal behavior were studied via small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Defected teeth were treated with a dispersion of nanocomposite microparticles to simulate toothpaste action., Findings: The hydrogels maintain their structure and thermal responsiveness when loaded with an amount of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles up to 2.3%w/w. In addition, the lower critical solution temperature is not affected by the presence of the mineral particles. A new low molecular weight hydrogelator with a saccharide (lactobionic) polar head linked by azide-alkyne click chemistry was prepared in three steps. It was obtained in high purity without chromatography, by phase separation and ultrafiltration of the aqueous gel. Gelation was not obtained reproducibly by conventional heating-cooling cycles and instead was obtained by shearing the aqueous solutions, from 2 wt% to 0.25 wt%. This method of preparation favored the formation of a quite unusual network of interconnected large but thin 2D-sheets (7nm-thick) formed by the association side-by-side of long and aligned 7nm diameter wormlike micelles. It was responsible for the reproducible gelation at the macroscopic scale. A second network made of helical fibres with a 10-13nm diameter, more or less intertwined was also formed but was scarcely able to sustain a macroscopic gel on its own. The gels were analysed by TEM (Transmission Electronic Microscopy), cryo-TEM and SAXS (Small Angle X-ray Scattering). Molecular modelling was also used to highlight the possible conformations the hydrogelator can take. The gels displayed a weak and reversible transition near 20°C, close to room temperature, ascribed to the wormlike micelles 2D-sheets network. Heating over 30°C led to the loss of the gel macroscopic integrity, but gel fragments were still observed in suspension. A second transition near 50°C, ascribed to the network of helical fibres, finally dissolved completely these fragments. The gels showed thixotropic behaviour, recovering slowly their initial elastic modulus, in few hours, after injection through a needle. Stable gels were tested as scaffold for neural cell line culture, showing a reduced biocompatibility. Hypothesis: The mechanical properties of cement pastes depend strongly on their porosities. In a saturated paste, the porosity links to the free water volume after hydration. Structural water, constrained water, and free water have different dynamical behavior. Hence, it should be possible to extract information on pore system by exploiting the water dynamics., Experiments: We investigated the slow dynamics of hydration water confined in calcium- and magnesium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H and M-S-H) gels using high-resolution quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) technique. C-S-H and M-S-H are the chemical binders present in calcium rich and magnesium rich cements. We measured three M-S-H samples: pure M-S-H, M-S-H with aluminum-silicate nanotubes (ASN), and M-S-H with carboxyl group functionalized ASN (ASN-COOH). A C-S-H sample with the same water content (i.e. 0.3) is also studied for comparison., Findings: Structural water in the gels contributes to the elastic component of the QENS spectrum, while constrained water and free water contribute the quasi-elastic component. Cement is a widely used construction material in the world. The quality and durability of aged cement pastes have a strong relationship with the water contained in it. The translational and rotational dynamics of water in ordinary Portland cement (OPC) pastes cured for 7, 14 and 30days were studied by analyzing Quasi-elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS) data. The effect of a new super-plasticizer (SP) additive was also studied by comparing the samples with and without the additive. By fitting the QENS spectra with the Jump-diffusion and Rotation-diffusion Model (JRM), six important parameters including the bound water index (BWI), the self-diffusion coefficient, D(t), the average residence time, τ0, the rotational diffusion constant, D(r), the rotational residence time, τ(r), and the mean squared displacement (MSD), 〈u(2)〉, were obtained. From these parameters, we can quantitatively follow the evolution of the bound water fraction (BWI). We can clearly see the different time ranges for the translational and rotational dynamics of water contained in the OPC pastes by τ0 and τ(r). From the MSD values compared with those of molecular dynamics simulation, we can distinguish between immobile water (mainly bound water) and mobile water, which includes confined water and ultraconfined water. Furthermore, by the fitted parameters' values and their change of slopes with increasing setting time for cement pastes with and without additive SP, it becomes clear that the effect of additive SP is to make the mobile water more confined and induce a more uniform the aging process during the evolution of the OPC pastes., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. The technological characteristics of porcelain stoneware tiles make them suitable for a wide range of applications spanning far beyond traditional uses. Due to the high density, porcelain stoneware tiles show high bending strength, wear resistance, surface hardness, and high fracture toughness. Nevertheless, despite being usually claimed as stain resistant, the surface porosity renders porcelain stoneware tiles vulnerable to dirt penetration with the formation of stains that can be very difficult to remove. In the present work, we report an innovative and versatile method to realize stain resistant porcelain stoneware tiles. The tile surface is treated by mixtures of nanosized zirconium hydroxide and nano- and micron-sized glass frits that thanks to the low particle dimension are able to penetrate inside the surface pores. The firing step leads to the formation of a glass matrix that can partially or totally close the surface porosity. As a result, the fired tiles become permanently stain resistant still preserving the original esthetical qualities of the original material. The microstructure of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gel, a major hydrated phase of Ordinary Portland Cement, with and without polycarboxylic ether (PCE) additives is investigated by combined analyses of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) data. The results show that these comb-shaped polymers tend to increase the size of the disk-like globules but have little influence on the thickness of the water and calcium silicate layers within the globules. As a result, the fractal packing of the globules becomes more open in the range of a few hundred nanometers, in the sense that the mass fractal dimension diminishes, since the PCE adsorption on the globules increases the repulsive force between and polydispersity of the C-S-H units. Moreover, scanning electron microscope (SEM) study of the synthesized C-S-H gels in the micrometer range shows that the PCEs depress the formation of fibrils while enhancing the foil-like morphology., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. This paper reports on the analysis of the hydration kinetics of a tricalcium silicate paste cured in presence of polymers industrially used in the extrusion process of mortars. In particular, we investigated the effect of a rheology-modifying additive (a methyl hydroxy ethyl cellulose) and a superplasticizer (a polyacrylic polymer). These polymers have been added to tricalcium silicate paste, both separately and together, to understand their distinct influence on the tricalcium silicate hydration and their possible synergies. The kinetic curves have been monitored from 10 to 40°C by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry and fitted using the generalized Boundary Nucleation and Growth Model combined to a diffusion-limited model, to extract: induction times, reaction rates, activation energies and diffusion coefficients. As a main result, this paper contributes to the advancement of the knowledge in the field of the extrusion process of cementitious materials, providing a thermodynamic support to the empirical evaluations of the additives performances., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. The kinetics of the cement hydration reaction is a relevant issue in the cement research field, particularly in the presence of additional inorganic and organic components that consistently increase the complexity of the cement paste. In the present study, the hydration reaction of pure tricalcium silicate has been monitored by different calorimetric approaches: the conventional Isothermal Conduction Calorimetry (IC) and a novel Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) protocol. The measured hydration curves have been modeled by using the Boundary Nucleation and Growth Model (BNGM) to extract thermodynamic parameters of the early stages of the hydration reaction. IC and DSC methods provide similar results in terms of rate constants, linear growth, and nucleation rates even though the IC accesses the total evolved heat while DSC discloses the fraction of unreacted water. The validation of the DSC approach as a reliable analytical method to the study of cement hydration kinetic is of particular importance because it allows following very long hydration processes, such as those of pastes containing organic retarders or superplasticizers. Since Roman times, cement is one of the synthetic materials with the largest production and usage by mankind. Its properties allowed the expansion of the Roman Empire and the building of still fascinating works. In spite of the diverse use of cement and the abundant literature accumulated during a century of systematic scientific research on this material, the understanding of its properties is still far from complete. Several issues are still open, ranging from the understanding of the hydration kinetics and the influence of the modern industrial additives, to the deep comprehension of the atomic arrangement and nanostructure of disordered hydrated calcium silicate phase (C-S-H) formed by hydration. This feature article briefly summarizes recent results in the field, highlighting the necessity for a colloidal model of the cement microstructure that, combined with the layer-like structure of the colloidal units, is the most effective approach to fully describe the characteristics of this peculiar material., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Stable ultra-small gold nanoparticles have been synthesized in aqueous phase by using a tri-block copolymer (BMB) as a templating agent consisting of two PEG-methylacrylate chains (B blocks) anchored to a poly(methacrylic) moiety containing a trithiocarbonate unit (M block). The effect of the BMB/Au molar ratios on the final particle size, shape and monodispersity has been investigated. The synthesized nanosols have been characterized by means of Visible Absorption, Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Results clearly indicate that the polymer plays a key role in determining the size and shape of gold particles, from fractal-like structures to monodisperse spherical particles with a mean diameter of about 3 nm. The aggregation behavior of these nanostructures has been characterized both in solution (SAXS) as well as on mica substrate (AFM) and has been proven to be driven by the polymer to gold concentration ratio., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc.
