Few studies have derived dietary patterns based on intake of discretionary foods and beverages and examined associations with genetic risk and obesity. We examined associations between dietary patterns based on discretionary foods, saturated fatty acids (SFA), and fiber, with a polygenetic risk score (PRS) for obesity and risk of overall obesity, central obesity and high body fat (BF) up to 9.7 years later. Data from 11,735 adults from the UK Biobank cohort study were used. Dietary patterns were derived from 24-h dietary assessments using reduced rank regression (response variables: discretionary foods and beverages [%E]; SFA [%E]; fiber density [g/MJ]). Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate associations between dietary patterns and incident overall obesity, central obesity and high BF, with interactions by PRS. Three dietary patterns (DP) were identified. DP1, correlated positively with discretionary foods and SFA, inversely with fiber, was associated with higher risk of central obesity (hazard ratio: 1.08; 95% confidence interval: 1.02, 1.14). DP2, correlated positively with discretionary foods and fiber, inversely with SFA, was not associated with obesity incidence. DP3, correlated positively with SFA and fiber, inversely with discretionary foods, was associated with lower risk of central obesity (hazard ratio: 0.92; 95% confidence interval: 0.87, 0.98). There was limited evidence of interactions with PRS. A dietary pattern high in high-SFA and low-fiber discretionary foods and beverages was associated with higher risk of obesity, independent of genetic predisposition., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Many young adults eat a poor-quality diet. However, understanding of the social-ecological correlates of diet quality in young adults is limited. The aim of the present study was to examine the correlates of diet quality in a cohort of young Australian adults. Data from the cross-sectional Measuring EAting in everyday Life Study were used. Young adults (n = 625; 18-30 years; 73% female) were included if they provided dietary data over three or four non-consecutive days using 'FoodNow', a real-time food diary smartphone application. Diet quality was estimated using the 2013 Dietary Guidelines Index (DGI). Thirty correlates from three levels of the social-ecological framework were collected using an online questionnaire: individual (e.g., self-efficacy), social-environmental (e.g., social support) and physical-environmental (e.g., living situation). Linear regression analyses were used to examine associations between correlates and DGI. Six individual-level correlates were associated with DGI: perceived time scarcity (b = -0.664, CI: 1.160, -0.168), food insecurity (b = -0.962, CI: 1.746, -0.178), self-efficacy (b = 0.230, CI: 0.137, 0.323), being born in Australia (b = -3.165, CI: 5.521, -0.808), being employed in non-trade roles (b = -4.578, CI: 8.903, -0.252) and preparing a meals with vegetables daily (b = 4.576, CI: 1.652, 7.500). No social-environmental or physical-environmental correlates were associated with DGI. Overall, this study showed that young adults had a higher diet quality if they had higher self-efficacy, perceived themselves to be less time scarce and less food insecure, were born in Australia, were employed in non-trade roles and prepared a meal with vegetables daily. Fruit and vegetable consumption is low compared to recommendations worldwide. Few studies have investigated intakes of fruit and vegetables and barriers to meeting recommendations in a mixed-method design. Moreover, there is a need to better understand differences in these barriers by population subgroups. This study aimed to examine fruit and vegetable intake and barriers to meeting recommendations and differences by sex, age and socio-economic groups. Data on adults from the cross-sectional Greater Bendigo Active Living Census 2014 were used. Participants self-reported intake of fruit and vegetables and completed an open-ended question on barriers to meeting recommended intakes. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine odds of meeting recommended intakes. Leximancer was used for thematic analyses of barriers. A total of 13,788 individuals (54% female, 52.1 (SD 17.7) years) were included in the quantitative analyses. Qualitative data were available for 5649 of these individuals. Only seven percent of participants met recommended intakes for fruit and vegetables. Barriers were lack of time, that guidelines were perceived as unachievable, the wide variety of other foods available and the high cost and limited availability of fresh fruit and vegetables. The most relevant barriers by subgroups were: taste (12%) and lack of appetite (18%) for males and females, respectively; lack of time (26-28%) and lack of appetite (70%) for young to middle aged adults and older adults, respectively and cost (35%) and availability of fresh fruits and vegetables (22%) for rural and disadvantaged groups.
