Discus fish (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) exhibit a unique parental care behavior: adult discus produces secretion through their skin, on which the larvae live after birth. The immune components in the skin mucus of parental discus would change during different parental care. C-type lectins (CTLs) could identify and eliminate pathogenic microorganisms and play important roles in innate immunity. Studies on CTLs of discus fish especially during parental care, however, are scarce. Here, we identified 186 CTL genes that distributed in 27 linkage groups based on discus genome. Phylogenetic analysis showed that S. aequifasciatus CTL (SaCTL) members were grouped into 14 subfamilies. A total of 80 gene replication events occurred, of which 15 pairs were subjected to segmental duplication and 65 pairs underwent tandem duplication. Ka/Ks ranged from 0.11 (SaCTL25 / SaCTL158) to 0.68 (SaCTL36 / SaCTL69), all undergoing purifying selection. RNA-seq analysis revealed that SaCTL members, including duplicated genes, in the skin of parental discus show distinct expression patterns in different care stages and between male and female parents. The SaCTL11 was differentially expressed in most care stages and reached the maximum after eggs spawned, but the expression of its paired SaCTL14 was low in each stage. The SaCTL39 increased first and then decreased, reaching a peak in eggs spawned, while paired SaCTL48 first decreased and then increased, reaching a peak in hatched eggs. The SaCTL50 was differentially expressed only in female fish during care, but not in male fish. Abstract: The fishery of the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus in the Mediterranean needs several ecological approaches to be properly managed. As such, several surveys were carried out to study the ecology of larvae and juveniles of this species, which reproduces during the warmest period of the year (May through September) in the Gulf of Lions. In particular, we studied the late larvae (15 mm total length until metamorphosis), especially as other authors have focused on larvae below that size. Unexpectedly, we also collected anchovy late larvae during the December 2007 survey, whose range in size corresponded to a later spawning period than previously reported. Differences in the nutritional condition of these larvae were assessed by comparing indices of lipid composition and estimating growth rates from otolith measurements to provide information on the probability of survival between the two groups. The analysis of fatty acids, used as tracers of trophic relationships, indicates that these larvae fed mainly on zooplankton. Nutritional conditions of summer and late autumn larvae were very similar. In contrast, growth rates were higher for August larvae, probably due to the different temperatures in the two seasons. Our results are especially relevant in an ecological context where the increasing mean water temperatures in the Western Mediterranean could favor the extension of the anchovy spawning period up to late-Autumn months. Abstract: Larvae of various coastal fish undergo immigration from spawning grounds towards estuarine nurseries. Several environmental factors can have an important impact on survival at this stage making it crucial for recruitment. Generalized linear models were applied in order to investigate the relation between river drainage, sea surface temperature (SST), NAO index and the North-South wind component intensity, over the two months prior to the estuarine colonization peak, and the densities of Platichthys flesus, Dicentrarchus labrax, Diplodus vulgaris and Diplodus bellottii in the nursery grounds based on a discontinuous historical dataset (from 1978 to 2006), for the Tagus estuary. The relation between SST over the 12 months prior to the estuarine colonization peak and fish densities in the nurseries was also investigated, as it integrates the periods of spawning stock maturation, spawning and larval immigration. While SST over the prior 12 months was negatively correlated with the abundance of P. flesus, it was positively correlated with the abundance of D. bellottii. Abundance of D. vulgaris was positively correlated with SST in the two months prior to the estuarine colonization peak, while the abundance of D. labrax was positively correlated with river drainage. The relations between SST and the abundance of P. flesus, a cold-water species with declining densities, and the subtropical species D. bellottii and D. vulgaris, which are increasing in abundance, are indicative of species abundance alterations related to climate warming. Dicentrarchus labrax will probably also be affected by climate change because of lowered precipitation and consequently river drainage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In the eastern part of the English Channel, common sole (Solea solea) has strong interests in fisheries research. Low recruitment along with a decline in spawning stock biomass have been observed for several years. According to the recruitment hypotheses, larval survival may play an important role that needs to be considered. The fish larval condition can be assessed using histology which has been recognised as the most appropriate method to provide a reliable index of the nutritional status. Based on this approach, this study aimed to identify critical periods of wild-collected sole larvae and to determine sources of variations of their condition between two periods separated by more than 20 years. In line with other studies, the transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding was identified as the most critical period with the lowest proportion of healthy larvae observed. During this first feeding stage, good larval conditions were located in sampling stations close to the coast and at the end of the spring season, in relation to higher temperature and fluorescence values. This highlights the need for sole larvae survival to cross the coastal front, which splits the central and coastal waters, to reach more stable and productive areas. This coastal migration pattern was consistent between 1995 and 2017, with however significantly lower larval abundances in the recent period. Multivariate analyses showed that the spring environmental conditions of 1995, characterised with lower temperature and higher fluorescence values were more favourable to larval condition, compared to the spring in 2017. Areas providing suitable environmental conditions in 2017 were more restricted and limited to sampling stations in front of estuaries. Since small differences in larval survival can lead to large fluctuations in recruitment, the larval condition should be studied in a more long-term approach. This would provide a better understanding of the environmental influence on larval survival and recruitment success. • First feeding stage corresponds to the critical most period during sole larval ontogeny. • Good larval condition was related to estuarine areas in the Eastern English Channel. • Lower sole larval abundances in spring 2017 compared to spring 1995. • Environment suitable for a good sole larvae condition was more limited in 2017.
