Lead (Pb) is a trace element that is naturally present in arid regions but it is also released to the marine environment by anthropogenic industrial emissions. Here, we assessed Pb concentrations in bone samples of four pinniped species: the Galapagos sea lion Zalophus wollebaeki , sampled in Galapagos archipelago, the monk seal Monachus monachus from Mauritania, and the South American fur seal Arctocephalus australis and the South American sea lion Otaria flavescens , from Uruguay, and investigate potential geographic differences. Concentrations of lead in the samples from Galapagos were lower than those detected in samples from Mauritania and Uruguay, indicating that the Galapagos archipelago is a comparatively pristine spot for this toxic element as related to the other two areas. The waters of Mauritania and Uruguay are likely affected by the inputs of lead brought by the desert dust and released by the local industry, respectively. This study supports the use of bone to assess lead concentrations in biota, as well as the use of pinnipeds as bioindicators of marine pollution. The Mediterranean Sea is considered a biodiversity hotspot and hosts a broad diversity of shark species. Unfortunately, many shark populations have suffered a long story of overexploitation and their abundance has strongly declined over the last decades. A few studies have addressed the trophic role of sharks in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, yet little is known about their isotopic niches. In this study, the isotopic niches of six shark species (Alopias vulpinus , Galeorhinus galeus, Hexanchus griseus , Isurus oxyrinchus , Prionace glauca and Squalus acanthias) from the northwestern Mediterranean Sea were determined and compared with those of sympatric predatory teleosts and marine mammals. Overall, δ13C and δ15N values were similar amongst all the shark species except for the three individuals of G. galeus , whose high δ15N values indicate recent immigration from a distinct area with a different isotopic baseline and hence were excluded from further analysis. The mixing models identified cephalopods as the dominant prey of the other five shark species and revealed that the medium-sized and large shark species studied here filled unique isotopic niches. Their trophic positions were similar to those of predatory teleosts and small dolphins but lower than those of larger dolphins, pilot whales and beaked whales. The high contribution of cephalopods to the diet of sharks in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea might be indicative of fish scarcity and deserves further research in the context of potential ontogenetic diet changes. • The isotopic niche of six medium-sized and large sharks was assessed. • Their trophic positions suggested they act as high-level mesopredators. • Cephalopods were the dominant prey group in the diet of five sharks. • The position of sharks in the δ13C-δ15N biplot revealed a unique isotopic niche compared to teleosts and cetaceans. Pilot whales ( Globicephala melas ) from the Faroe Islands, North-East Atlantic, have high body concentrations of organohalogenated compounds (OHCs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). The aim of the present study was to examine if and to what extent blood plasma and liver concentrations of several groups of these OHCs are related to concentrations of relevant nutritional and hormonal biomarkers in pilot whales. Thyroid hormones (THs: total and free thyroxine and total and free triiodothyronine) and vitamin A (retinol), D (25-hydroxyvitamin D 3 ) and E (α-tocopherol) were analysed in plasma (n=27) and vitamin A (total vitamin A, retinol and retinyl palmitate) and E (α- and γ-tocopherol) were analysed in liver (n=37) of Faroe Island pilot whales. Correlative relationships between the biomarkers and OHC concentrations previously analysed in the same tissues in these individuals were studied. The TH concentrations in plasma were significantly higher in juveniles than in adults. Vitamin D concentrations in plasma and α- and γ-tocopherol in liver were higher in adults than in juveniles. Multivariate statistical modelling showed that the age and sex influenced the relationship between biomarkers and OHCs. Some significant positive relationships were found between OHCs and thyroid hormone concentrations in the youngest juveniles (p<0.05). In plasma of juvenile whales α–tocopherol was also positively correlated with all the OHCs (p<0.05). Only few significant correlations were found between single OHCs and retinol and vitamin D in plasma within the age groups. There were significant negative relationships between hepatic PBDE concentrations and retinol (BDE-47) and γ–tocopherol (BDE-49, -47, -100, -99, -153) in liver. The relationships between OHCs and THs or vitamins suggest that in pilot whales OHCs seem to have minor effects on TH and vitamin concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is commonly assumed that the resolution of the isotopic niche of consumers can be improved with a larger number of chemical elements, but this is only true if steep environmental gradients exist at the appropriate spatial scale. Off Mauritania, the δ13C value is a useful proxy to understand the distribution of marine mammals along the inshore-offshore gradient, and the δ15N value to assess their trophic position. Here, the incorporation of δ18O values as an independent habitat tracer largely improved the resolution of the isotopic niche, because the δ18O gradients, mostly reflecting marked salinity gradients, spanned over broad spatial scales when compared to the home range of marine mammals. On the contrary, δ34S values did not improve much the resolution of the isotopic niche at the species level, although it was useful to identify individuals relying on food webs associated with anoxic sediments, such as seagrass meadows. This is because the δ34S gradient in the area develops over a small spatial scale, compared to the home range of the considered species. This study provides new insights into the use of a muti-element approach in isotopic ecology, and improves the understanding of habitat partitioning between the considered marine mammal species off North Western Africa. • Mitochondrial monophyly is commonly employed to define evolutionary significant units. • Monophyly may be caused by insufficient sampling or a recent common ancestor. • Mitogenomic studies are generally based on few samples and prone to sampling issues. • Expanded mitogenome sampling negates previous monophyly in fin whales. The advent of massive parallel sequencing technologies has resulted in an increase of studies based upon complete mitochondrial genome DNA sequences that revisit the taxonomic status within and among species. Spatially distinct monophyly in such mitogenomic genealogies, i.e., the sharing of a recent common ancestor among con-specific samples collected in the same region has been viewed as evidence for subspecies. Several recent studies in cetaceans have employed this criterion to suggest subsequent intraspecific taxonomic revisions. We reason that employing intra-specific, spatially distinct monophyly at non-recombining, clonally inherited genomes is an unsatisfactory criterion for defining subspecies based upon theoretical (genetic drift) and practical (sampling effort) arguments. This point was illustrated by a re-analysis of a global mitogenomic assessment of fin whales, Balaenoptera physalus spp., published by Archer et al. (2013), which proposed to further subdivide the Northern Hemisphere fin whale subspecies, B. p. physalus. The proposed revision was based upon the detection of spatially distinct monophyly among North Atlantic and North Pacific fin whales in a genealogy based upon complete mitochondrial genome DNA sequences. The extended analysis conducted in this study (1676 mitochondrial control region, 162 complete mitochondrial genome DNA sequences and 20 microsatellite loci genotyped in 380 samples) revealed that the apparent monophyly among North Atlantic fin whales reported by Archer et al. (2013) to be due to low sample sizes. In conclusion, defining sub-species from monophyly (i.e., the absence of para- or polyphyly) can lead to erroneous conclusions due to relatively "trivial" aspects, such as sampling. Basic population genetic processes (i.e., genetic drift and migration) also affect the time to the most recent common ancestor and hence the probability that individuals in a sample are monophyletic.
