Graphical abstract Abstract Self-assembly exploits a facile non-covalent way to couple structurally different building blocks for creating soft materials with synergetic novel properties and functions. Taking advantage of magneto-properties from magnetic surfactants as well as versatile functional ligand formed by carbon quantum dots with cysteine (cys-CQDs), the magnetic network materials were firstly constructed by using magnetic surfactants and cys-CQDs as self-assembly building blocks. Counterions of Br−, [GdCl 3 Br]−, [HoCl 3 Br]− in surfactants could control the morphology of magnetic network structures, and the concentration of magnetic surfactants manoeuvres a versatile scenario of self-assembly behavior. Self-assembly of cys-CQDs and CTAHo brought out a 10-fold increase in magnetic moment of CTAHo. The fluorescent property of carbon quantum dots firstly served as an effective indicator element to dissect the collective effect in self-assembly process. For the sake of capturing the target sequence-specific DNA molecules, in situ growth of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) upon the magnetic network structures was realized by synergetically electrostatic and coordinated interaction of carboxyl groups and Ag ions. The magnetic Ag self-assemblies anchored thiol-containing DNA, serving as a magnetic separation booster for the target sequence-specific DNA molecules under an applied magnetic field, which will bring light on designing magneto-functional self-assembly materials according to practical application requirements. Graphical abstract Abstract Plasmonic microgels (PMgels) of the self-assembled gold nanorods (Au NRs) with side-by-side piles in ionic liquid microgels were prepared. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed unique self-growth and self-arrangement of Au NRs in the microgel systems. The fabrication of PMgels occurs through co-assembling Au NRs and an ionic liquid microgel system, therefore differs from the fabrication of conventional plasmonic hybrid nanocomposites. These PMgels showed strong absorption in the near-infrared window and enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency, up to 52.8%, compared to the Au NRs (22%) as a result of the ordering and dense packing of Au NRs in the microgels. When the PMgels were exposed to a near-IR laser, the doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox) released from PMgels and the resulting thermal effect can immensely inhibit tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo. The tests demonstrated that no tumor metastasis occurred. This platform of the PMgels with the laser-controlled delivery system could provide chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy for a wide spectrum of diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Phosphachroman-2,4-dione and 4-alkoxyphosphacoumarin derivatives, phosphonic analogues of chromones and coumarins with potential biological activities, were synthesized in good yields through sequential base-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization of O-alkyl-O′-(2′-methoxycarbonyl phenyl)-(substituted) benzyl phosphonates and alkylation. Synthetically colloidal clusters with new functions and well-controlled size distribution can in principle be constructed using colloidal particles. The building units could be integrated into dense-packed and desired structured with novel functions by means of an efficient strategy or binding patterns. Here we synthesized colloidal clusters of icosahedrons and long-range ordered face-centered cubes (FCCs) via emulsion self-assembly using fluorescence upconversion nanoparticles NaGdF 4 : Yb3+, Er3+ as building blocks. The icosahedrons and FCCs structure may generate spontaneously due to an entropy-driven process. The morphology and structure of colloidal clusters have noticeable transformation from icosahedron-like symmetry to FCC symmetry with the increasing size of clusters. Furthermore, the colloidal clusters could be decorated with cationic polyethyleneimine (PEI) via electrostatic interaction. When copper ions are added, the amino groups of PEI could coordinate with Cu2+ forming low toxic PEI-Cu2+ layers, which can further serve as energy receptors to quench upconversion fluorescence with 980 nm laser excitation. Our results reflect that the colloidal clusters not only can serve as a fluorescence platform of detection and analysis but also may represent advancement in the field of colloidal and interface sciences. Screen use while eating has been recently identified as a highly common and potentially important specific setting of screen use in relation to eating disorder symptomatology. However, given this area of research is still in its infancy, how screen use while eating may be related to eating disorder symptomatology remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, the present study probed the potential roles of mindfulness and intuitive eating in the association between screen use while eating and eating disorder symptomatology. A large sample of Chinese adults (N = 800, aged 18–67 years old) recruited through a Chinese survey platform, Credamo, completed questionnaires assessing screen use while eating, eating disorder symptomatology, mindfulness, and intuitive eating. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model. Results confirmed our hypotheses that the association between screen use while eating and eating disorder symptomatology was partially explained by mindfulness and intuitive eating, after adjusting for covariates (e.g., gender, age, body mass index, total screen time, and social media use). That said, higher screen use while eating was associated first with lower mindfulness and then with lower intuitive eating, which in turn were related to higher eating disorder symptomatology. The findings underline the importance of including eating-specific screen use for future research on eating disorder symptomatology and also have implications for an integrative intervention of mindfulness-based approaches and intuitive eating for mitigating the adverse effects of excessive screen use on eating behaviors. • Sixteen novel artemisinin-sulfonamide hybrids were designed and synthesized. • Most compounds showed better CA IX inhibitory activity than the starting segment sulfonamide. • Most compounds showed better antitumor activity than dihydroartemisinin and sulfonamide. • The most potent hybrid 3 could inhibit extracellular acidification of cancer cells. • Docking showed accommodation of dihydroartemisinin in the hydrophobic pocket of CA IX. A series of artemisinin-sulfonamide hybrids (1 – 16) have been designed and synthesized by using molecular hybridization approach and investigated for the inhibitory activity of four human (h) carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1), hCA I, II, IX and XII. The results indicated most of the target compounds showed better CA IX and CA XII inhibitory activity than the starting segment sulfanilamide. Among all the compounds, compound 3 (IC 50 : 5 nM) showed the best CA IX inhibitory efficacy. The p -aminobenzenesulfonamide derivatives showed significant antiproliferative activities against MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line and HT-29 colon cancer cell line under hypoxic conditions where CA IX and CA XII are overexpressed and most of them showed no apparent cytotoxic effects toward MCF-10A normal mammary epithelial cell. Among these derivatives, compound 3 displayed the most potent antiproliferative activities (IC 50 : 0.65 μM) against HT-29 cell line under hypoxia and low cytotoxicity (IC 50 : 78.0 μM) toward normal cell line. Meanwhile, compound 3 was found to efficiently decrease the hypoxia-induced extracellular acidification in both cancer cells. Molecular docking studies of compounds 3 , 4 , 5 and 9 revealed the proper interactions between the hybrid molecules and the active site of CA IX. • Sugar-tail approach was employed to design novel CA IX inhibitors. • Compound 12g (IC 50 of 7 nM) was more effective than the reference drug acetazolamide. • Most of compounds exhibited better antitumor activity under hypoxic conditions. • Representative compounds restored 20%-35% level of the cytotoxic efficiency of doxorubicin. • Docking showed sugar-tail of compound 12g could interact with hydrophilic pocket of CA IX. A series of novel carbohydrate-based sulfonamides were designed and synthesized by the sugar-tail approach. The classical aromatic sulfonamide pharmacophore (ArSO 2 NH 2) was directly linked to a hydrophilic sugar-tail moiety through a rigid 1, 2, 3-triazole linker by the click chemistry reaction. The inhibitory activity against three carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) isozymes (hCA I, hCA II and hCA IX) of all new compounds so designed were investigated in vitro and efficient inhibition against all three CA isoforms, especially the tumor-associated hCA IX, were observed. These glycoconjugate sulfonamide derivatives displayed better inhibitory efficacy in comparison with the starting segments (SA and p -hydroxybenzene sulfonamide). In particular, compound 12g was found to be the most effective and rather selective inhibitor of hCA IX with inhibitory constant (IC 50) value of 7 nM, being four times more potent than the clinical used agent acetazolamide (AAZ) (IC 50 = 30 nM). Meanwhile, almost all compounds showed moderate antiproliferative activities against two cancer cell lines (HT-29 and MDA-MB-231) in both hypoxic and normoxic conditions while compound 12g also exhibited the most prominent antitumor activity. Furthermore, evident recovery (20–35% reduction of IC 50 values) of cytotoxic efficiency of doxorubicin with the combination of compounds 12d , 12g and 22d as CAIs were detected on MDA-MB-231 cell line under hypoxic environment. In addition, docking studies revealed that the sugar-tail fragment of the target compounds participated in interactions with hydrophilic subpocket at the surface of hCA IX active site and supported the CA IX inhibitory activities of carbohydrate-based sulfonamide derivatives.
