[Display omitted] In this work, we report the design and fabrication of self-powered binary response PDs based on II-type heterostructures consisting of SnS x nanoflakes (NFs) and rutile TiO 2 nanorod arrays (NRs). The TiO 2 NRs effectively block light with wavelengths below 400 nm from reaching SnS x. Under 385 nm light, the photoelectrons in TiO 2 recombine with holes in SnS x at the interface due to the energy band bending, resulting in a positive photocurrent. Under 410 nm light, the photoelectrons in SnS x and the photogenerated holes in TiO 2 accumulate at the interface, overcoming the interfacial potential barriers induced by the higher Fermi levels of SnS x and inducing a negative photocurrent. Based on the bipolar response, the dual-band imaging capability without external filters and the light-encrypted OR, AND, and NOT logic gates using a single device are demonstrated. This work provides a blueprint for the development of multifunctional self-powered PDs that can simplify system architecture, reduce the energy consumption, and improve accuracy for applications, such as visual systems, light-controlled logic circuits, and encrypted optical communications. Self-powered ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors (PDs) based on ZnO heterojunctions have attracted more attention due to the simple preparation and excellent photoresponse performance without any power supply. The self-powered UV PDs based on NiO nanoflakes/ZnO nanorod arrays (NRs) heterojunctions were fabricated by a low-cost, simple chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The crystal quality, optical and electronic properties of ZnO NRs is modified by Al3+ ions additions in the precursor solution. The heterojunction devices with ZnO NRs grown in 0.5% Al3+ ions additions precursor solution exhibit a narrow UV spectral selectivity, high photoresponsivity R (85.12 mA/W) and detectivity D* (1.74 × 1012 cm·Hz1/2/W) and a fast response speed (~2 ms) under 378 nm UV light for low intensity irradiance (0.2 mW/cm2) at zero bias. The large built-in electric field of the NiO/ZnO heterojunction with the increased Fermi level of ZnO NRs provide a strong driving force to separate and transfer the photo-generated carriers, decrease the recombination of the carriers and then improve the photoresponse performance of heterojunction devices without external bias. Abstract: In the majority of sexual eukaryotes, the mitochondrial genomes are inherited uniparentally and have predominantly clonal population structures. In clonally evolving genomes, alleles at different loci will be in significant linkage disequilibrium. In this study, the associations among alleles at nine mitochondrial loci were analyzed for 379 isolates in four natural populations of the button mushroom Agaricus bisporus. The results indicated that the mitochondrial genome in the Desert California population was not significantly different from random recombination. In contrast, the three other populations all showed predominantly clonal mitochondrial population structure. While no evidence of recombination was found in the Alberta, Canada A. bisporus population, signatures of recombination were evident in the Coastal Californian and the French populations. We discuss the potential mechanisms that could have contributed to the observed mitochondrial recombination and to the differences in allelic associations among the geographic populations in this economically important mushroom. Abstract: At 135,005nt, the mitochondrial genome in Agaricus bisporus represents the largest fungal mitochondrial genome sequenced to date. Its large size is mainly due to the presence of mobile genetic elements, including a total of 43 group I introns, three group II introns, and five DNA fragments that show sequence similarity to linear invertron-like plasmids. The introns are distributed in eight of the 15 protein coding genes. These introns contain a total of 61,092nt (∼45.3% of the whole mitochondrial genome) and include representatives of most of the group I introns so far found in mitochondrial genomes of Basidiomycota. The plasmid-like sequences include 6730nt total representing 5.0% of the genome. These sequences showed high-level similarities to two different mitochondrial plasmids reported for basidiomycete mushrooms: the autonomously replicating pEM in Agaricus bitorquis and the integrated linear plasmid sequences in Agrocybe aegerita and Moniliophthora perniciosa. Moreover, the plasmid-related sequences are located within or adjacent to two large (4559nt) inverted repeats containing also two sets of mitochondrial tRNA genes. Our analyses are consistent with the hypothesis that horizontal DNA transfer has played a significant role in the evolution of the A. bisporus mitochondrial genome. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Zn1− x Co x O nanocrystals with nominal Co doping concentrations of x =0–0.1 were synthesized through a simple solution route followed by a calcining process. The doping effects on the structural, morphological and optical properties were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman, absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. The results indicated that a small amount of Co ions were incorporated into ZnO lattice structure, whereas the secondary phase of Co3O4 was segregated and precipitated at high Co doping concentrations, the solid solubility of Co ions in ZnO nanocrystals could be lower than 0.05. The spectra related to transitions within the tetrahedral Co2+ ions in the ZnO host crystal were observed in absorption and luminescence spectra. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are accepted treatment options for patients with cancers associated with the abdominal region. Currently, there are insufficient data that evaluate the effectiveness of these therapeutic options in young patients who have peritoneal metastasis (PM) originating from colorectal cancer. In this investigation, we evaluated perioperative data, clinicopathological manifestations, and survival consequences in 46 younger (≤50 y) patients who underwent CRS and HIPEC therapy between 2017 June and 2019 June and then compared these data with 94 older patients (aged >50 y). Compared with older patients, younger patients had a higher synchronous PM incidence (78.3% versus 51.1%, P < 0.001) and were more likely to exhibit signet ring histology and mucinous (29.8% versus 60.9%; P < 0.001). The cancer-specific survival rates after CRS and HIPEC treatment were similar in both age sets. Multivariate Cox regression revealed that mucinous/signet adenocarcinoma (hazard ratio 2.20, 95% confidence interval 1.02-4.74; P = 0.044) and rectal origin (hazard ratio 2.51, 95% confidence interval 1.11-5.67; P = 0.027) were independent risk factors for a lower cancer-specific survival rate. Younger (age ≤50 y) patients who have PM of colorectal cancer origin often present synchronous PM, which is less commonly observed in older patients. Tumors in younger patients are more aggressive; however, post-CRS and HIPEC treatment, the benefits are similar to those observed in older cohorts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The inheritance of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is predominantly uniparental in most sexual eukaryotes. In this study, we examined the mitochondrial inheritance pattern of Cryptococcus gattii , a basidiomycetous yeast responsible for the recent and ongoing outbreak of cryptococcal infections in the US Pacific Northwest and British Columbia (especially Vancouver Island) in Canada. Using molecular markers, we analyzed the inheritance of mtDNA in 14 crosses between strains within and between divergent lineages in C. gattii . Consistent with results from recent studies, our analyses identified significant variations in mtDNA inheritance patterns among strains and crosses, ranging from strictly uniparental to biparental. For two of the crosses that showed uniparental mitochondrial inheritance in standard laboratory conditions, we further investigated the effects of the following environmental variables on mtDNA inheritance: UV exposure, temperature, and treatments with the methylation inhibitor 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine and with the ubiquitination inhibitor ammonium chloride. Interestingly, one of these crosses showed no response to these environmental variables while the other exhibited diverse patterns ranging from complete uniparental inheritance of the MAT a parent mtDNA, to biparental inheritance, and to a significant bias toward inheritance of the MAT α parental mtDNA. Abstract: Genitourinary candidiasis, which is most frequently caused by Candida albicans, is a common problem worldwide. The pathogenesis of the infection, especially recurrence of the infection, remains to be elucidated. This study analyzed 199 independent Chinese C. albicans isolates using multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and microsatellite typing, with the focus on the isolates associated with vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) of Chinese women. MLST data of 221 vaginal isolates from other countries available from the consensus MLST database of C. albicans were retrieved for comparison. A total of 124 diploid sequence types (DSTs) were recognized from the Chinese C. albicans isolates, among which, 98 (79.0%) have not been reported in the MLST database of the species. The majority of the VVC (71.6%) and balanitis (92.3%) isolates from China were located in clade 1 of C. albicans; while only 40.6% of the vaginal isolates and 7.8% of the oral isolates from healthy volunteers were found in the same clade. Furthermore, 69.1% of the VVC and 84.5% of the balanitis isolates concentrated in a cluster of clade 1 with DST 79 as the primary founder. The isolates in this cluster possessed microsatellite genotypes CAI 30–45, CAI 32–46 and their close derivatives. Interestingly, a remarkable difference in genotype distribution patterns between Chinese and non-Chinese vaginal isolates of C. albicans was observed. Only 11.3% of the non-Chinese vaginal isolates compared were located in the cluster concentrated with Chinese VVC isolates. Intra-specific comparison of mitochondrial genomes can help elucidate the evolution of a species, however it has not been performed for hypocrealean fungi that form diverse symbiotic associations with other organisms. In this study, comparative analyses of three completely sequenced mitochondrial genomes of a hypocrealean fungus, Cordyceps militaris , the type species of Cordyceps genus, revealed that the introns were the main contributors to mitochondrial genome size variations among strains. Mitochondrial genes in C. militaris have been invaded by group I introns in at least eight positions. PCR assays of various C. militaris isolates showed abundant variations of intron presence/absence among strains at seven of the eight intronic loci. Although the ancestral intron pattern was inferred to contain all eight introns, loss and/or gain events occurred for seven of the eight introns. These introns invaded the C. militaris mitochondrial genome probably by horizontal transfer from other fungi, and intron insertions into intronless genes in C. militaris were accompanied by co-conversions of upstream exon sequences especially for those introns targeting protein-coding genes. We also detected phylogenetic congruence between the intron and exon trees at each individual locus, consistent with the ancestral mitochondria of C. militaris as having all eight introns. Abstract: Trap-rich CdS nanocrystals were synthesized by employing CdSt2 and sulfur as precursors via thermal decomposition. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize structure, morphology and luminescence properties of CdS nanocrystals (NCs). CdS NCs have a broad emission across 500–700nm under the excitation of blue light with 460nm, consequently, white light can be produced by mixing broad emission from CdS NCs excited by blue light, with the remaining blue light. In addition, the broad emission generation is closely and inseparably related to surface defects. Moreover, LaMer model was used to explain the phenomenon that the intensity of the trap emission gradually decreases as the reaction time increases in contrast with that of the band-edge emission. Abstract: Due to its haploid nature and its predominantly uniparental mode of inheritance, the mitochondrial genome has been analyzed extensively in population and evolutionary genetic studies of eukaryotes. Among the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments, the region surrounding the origin of replication is the most commonly studied. However, most of the studies have focused on animals and little is known about the extent and patterns of sequence variation around the mtDNA origin of replication (mtOri) in fungi. In this study, we found abundant variation in a 597bp fragment surrounding the mtOri for 53 isolates of the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans obtained from a diverse group of hosts in Hainan, a tropical island of China. Within this DNA fragment, a total of 17 haplotypes were found for the 53 isolates. The extent of sequence variation for this group of strains was similar to that for 24 strains that represented the global nuclear genotype diversity. In contrast to those in animals where there were significant biases in favor of transitional mutations (e.g. the transition to transversion ratio is about 20 in human mtDNA), our data showed a transition to transversion ratio of ∼0.5 around mtOri in C. albicans. Our analysis revealed no apparent geographic pattern of sequence variation based on the birthplaces of the analyzed hosts. However, the sample from patients had a lower genotypic diversity than those from healthy hosts borne either in Hainan or elsewhere in China. Our results suggest that C. albicans mtDNA has a base substitution pattern different from its nuclear genome and that sequences from the mtOri region could enhance our understanding of C. albicans genome evolution and population structuring. Abstract: Cryptococcus neoformans is a model basidiomycete yeast. Strains of this species belong to one of two mating types: mating type a (MATa) or mating type alpha (MATα). In typical crosses between MATa and MATα strains, the progeny inherit mitochondria from the MATa parent. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. To help elucidate the molecular mechanisms, we examined the effects of four environmental factors on the patterns of mtDNA inheritance. These factors are temperature, UV irradiation, and the addition of either the methylation inhibitor 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (5-adc) or the ubiquitination inhibitor ammonium chloride. Except temperature, the other three factors have been shown to influence organelle inheritance during sexual mating in other eukaryotes. Our results indicate that while the application of 5-adc or ammonium chloride did not influence mtDNA inheritance in C. neoformans, both UV irradiation and high temperature treatments did. Progeny from a cross involving a high temperature-sensitive mutant with the calcineurin subunit A gene deleted showed biparental mtDNA inheritance in all examined temperatures, consistent with a role of calcineurin and temperature in mtDNA inheritance. Furthermore, the zygote progeny population from a cross performed at a high-temperature environment had a greater variability in their vegetative fitness than that from the same cross conducted at a low temperature. Our results indicate a potentially adaptive role of biparental mtDNA inheritance and mtDNA recombination in certain environments in C. neoformans. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
