Innovation is a buzz word that continues to be used in various ways in commercial and political contexts as a passe-partout for economic development and regional prosperity. As a result, innovation spaces, hubs and precincts are often heralded as a panacea by government and industry to bring about a start-up and entrepreneurial culture. However, many innovation spaces exclude people and community groups who could potentially make a useful contribution to innovation. In this positioning paper, we are interested in unpacking the innovation narrative and looking more closely at the types of spaces designed to enable citizens to participate in and contribute to innovation – using both physical and digital means.

Sarcoptic mange in wombats has reached catastrophic proportions causing mass declines of 70% or more in bare-nosed wombats across New South Wales, Australia. Research found that mange causes extinctions of local wombat populations. By administering an alternative oral treatment rather than conventional topical treatment, our study partner Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary, has had repeated success with wombats in quarantined care. This approach significantly decreases treatment time, and wombats continually recover fully. This co-design study aims to document and evaluate this new treatment procedure and contextual factors. It will trial a purpose-built hospital burrow enclosure to prepare for larger scale deployment.

This paper examines some of the touch points between the city and its citizens, looking at both sides: On the one hand, algorithmic curation and selection renders automated variations of the city. On the other hand, there are opportunities to explore how tinkering with algorithms might bring about a diversity dividend (Wood & Landry, 2008) and increased innovation capacity in cities (Duranton & Puga, 2000; Jacobs, 1969; Ottaviano & Peri, 2006). The paper is structured as follows. It will first outline the basic premises of big data analytics and algorithms in the context of urban informatics that have given rise to the new field of urban science. It then will turn to the socio-cultural implications and issues arising from the emerging algorithmic culture. In the third section, we will discuss examples that illustrate possible pathways to tinker and challenge algorithmic culture. We will use the perhaps counterintuitive case of “getting lost” versus “losing yourself” in the city to outline some possible ways forward.

Entrepreneurs and start-up founders occupying innovation spaces and hubs often find themselves inside a filter bubble or echo chamber, where like-minded people tend to come up with similar ideas and recommend similar approaches to innovation. Algorithmic culture embedded in digital technology contributes to building these bubbles. Yet, genuine innovation thrives on so-cial inclusion fostering a diversity of ideas. To escape these echo chambers, we propose to design and test a 'skunkworks finder' that will provide the possibility to discover marginalised net-works and innovation spaces in the creative fringe.

Since 1995, the (so far1) biennial Conference on Designing Interactive Systems (DIS) is the premier, international arena where designers, artists, psychologists, user experience researchers, systems engineers, and many more, come together to debate and shape the future of interactive systems design and practice. DIS is owned by the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer- Human Interaction (SIGCHI). In the past, DIS has been held in Ann Arbor (1995), Amsterdam (1997), New York (2000), London (2002), Boston (2004), State College (2006), Cape Town (2008), Aarhus (2010), Newcastle (2012), and Vancouver (2014). The DIS'16 conference schedule comprises two days of pre-conference workshops and a doctoral consortium as well as three main conference days packed with peer reviewed paper presentations, demos, panel discussions, and three invited keynote speakers. The social program includes the welcome reception on Sunday night, the DIS Experience Night on Monday night, the DIS conference dinner on Tuesday night, and a post-conference after party on Wednesday night. And for all those who still haven't had enough, the QUT School of Design has added a great satellite event held in conjunction with DIS'16: the inaugural Queensland Design Policy Summit, a full day event on Thursday 9 June, dedicated to bringing together thought leaders and policy makers across design, business, science, education, and citymaking in a dialogue to canvass the merits of resurrecting a revised, fresh, and bold Queensland Design Policy. The DIS'16 theme of "fuse" is about exploring the range of new possibilities along the human and technology spectrum -- the blurring of any clear divides between analog and digital, atoms and bits, materiality and virtuality, art and design, academy and industry. From mobiles to wearables, bearables, and even injectables, technology is finding its way to be carried by us, on by, and inside us. At the same time do we welcome more and more robots and humanoids into our lives -- from Furby, Roomba, Siri, to Jibo. Are we witnessing a fusion of the cyborg with the matrix? What does the future of interactive systems hold? We hope to advance these questions at DIS'16. I am very pleased that we were able to curate and assemble a stellar program, including three invited keynote presentations by Carlo Ratti (MIT), Natalie Jeremijenko (New York University), and Stelarc (Curtin University of Technology). I am sure they will stimulate our thinking particularly at the intersection of design and cities, the environment, and the human body.

In this position statement for the Participatory Design Conference (PDC’16) Workshop “Ting: Making publics through provocation, conflict and appropriation,” I explain my personal motivation and rationale for researching into the nexus of design and politics. I use my experience running as an opportunity candidate for the Queensland Greens in the 2015 Queensland State Elections as a way to provide rich context to illustrate aspects of what it means to be a designer as politician and a politician as designer. I reflect on this experience by discussing three themes: making politics as designers; making publics as politicians, and; making provocations as artists.

The Urban Informatics Research Lab brings together a group of people who focus their research on interdisciplinary topics at the intersection of social, spatial, and technical research domains—that is, people, place, and technology. Those topics are spread across the breadth of urban life—its contemporary issues and its needs, as well as the design opportunities that we have as individuals, groups, communities, and as a whole society. The lab’s current research areas include urban planning and design, civic innovation, mobility and transportation, education and connected learning, environmental sustainability, and food and urban agriculture. The common denominator of the lab’s approach is user-centered design research directed toward understanding, conceptualizing, developing, and evaluating sociotechnical practices as well as the opportunities afforded by innovative digital technology in urban environments.

Welcome to the southern hemisphere, welcome to Australia, welcome to Brisbane, welcome to QUT Urban Informatics, and welcome to the 5th International Conference on Communities & Technologies: C&T 2011. As both technology and technological practice evolve in turn, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has expanded its focus from the design and assessment of particular interaction styles to encompass the role that interactive systems play in connecting people and communities with their world. The focus of HCI is no longer on the stationary user moored to a fixed desktop PC in an organisational context. Rather, the user is constructed as fluid and mobile, interacting with people and technologies across a broad range of contexts. Communities as a social unit are increasingly important in a knowledge-based society. Issues and trends such as political activism with social media, citizen journalism, citizen science, crowd sourcing, community enagement, working across cultures, online deliberation, and civic intelligence all require a profound understanding of communities and community interactions. Recognising these issues and trends early on, the Communities & Technologies conference has become the key international forum stimulating scholarly debate and disseminating research on these complex connections between communities - both physical and virtual - and information and communication technologies. After the inaugural conference in Amsterdam in 2003, followed by Milan in 2005, Michigan in 2007, and Pennsylvania in 2009, this is the first time that this biennial event takes place in the southern hemisphere and outside Europe and the U.S.

The progress of technology has led to the increased adoption of energy monitors among household energy consumers. While the monitors available on the market deliver real-time energy usage feedback to the consumer, the form of this data is usually unengaging and mundane. Moreover, it fails to address consumers with different motivations and needs to save and compare energy. This paper presents a study that seeks to inform design guidelines for differently motivated energy consumers. We focus on comparative feedback supported by a community of energy consumers. In particular, we examine eco-visualisations, temporal self-comparison, norm comparison, one-on-one comparison and ranking, whereby the last three allow us to explore the potential of socialising energy-related feedback. These feedback types were integrated in EnergyWiz ? a mobile application that enables users to compare with their past performance, neighbours, contacts from social networking sites and other EnergyWiz users. The application was evaluated in personal, semi-structured interviews which gave us insights on how to design motivation-related comparative feedback.

Yes, we are open! Despite adverse economic and financial conditions, the OZCHI 2009 organising committee succeeded in putting together five days jam-packed with opportunities to present, share and discuss research and development work, engage in cutting edge HCI topics, catch up with old friends and colleagues, and meet new ones. I welcome you to the 21st OZCHI conference. The 2009 conference theme is Design | Open 24_7. Accessibility, inclusivity and dissolving boundaries are core to this year's theme for the design of human interaction with and through digital technologies. The integration of digital technologies into our everyday life allows for a seamless transitioning between open and closed, work and leisure, public and private. Open implies participation and collaboration across traditional borders between individuals, organisations and disciplines. I hope that OZCHI 2009 provides a forum to discuss all aspects of openness, open borders, open participation, open source, and open architecture.
