18. Exploring Attitudes Towards Increasing User Awareness of Reality From Within Virtual Reality

Abstract

The occlusive nature of VR headsets introduces significant barriers to a user’s awareness of their surrounding reality. While recent research has explored systems to facilitate a VR user’s interactions with nearby people, objects, etc, we lack a fundamental understanding of user attitudes towards and expectations of these systems. We present the results of a card sorting study (N=14) which investigated attitudes towards increasing a VR user’s reality awareness (awareness of people, objects, audio, pets, and systems to manage and moderate personal usage) whilst in VR. Our results confirm VR headsets should be equipped with systems to increase a user’s awareness of reality. However, opinions vary on how increased awareness should be achieved as our results also highlight differing expectations regarding: persistent vs temporary notification design, notification content and when, why and how awareness should be increased.

19. CueVR: Studying the Usability of Cue-based Authentication for Virtual Reality

Abstract

Existing virtual reality (VR) authentication schemes are either slow or prone to observation attacks. We propose CueVR, a cue-based authentication scheme that is resilient against observation attacks by design since vital cues are randomly generated and only visible to the user experiencing the VR environment. We investigate three different input modalities through an in-depth usability study (N=20) and show that while authentication using CueVR is slower than the less secure baseline, it is faster than existing observation resilient cue-based schemes and VR schemes (4.151 s – 7.025 s to enter a 4-digit PIN). Our results also indicate that using the controllers’ trackpad significantly outperforms input using mid-air gestures. We conclude by discussing how visual cues can enhance the security of VR authentication while maintaining high usability. Furthermore, we show how existing real-world authentication schemes combined with VR’s unique characteristics can advance future VR authentication procedures.

24. Novel Challenges of Safety, Security and Privacy in Extended Reality

Abstract

Extended Reality (AR/VR/MR) technology is becoming increasingly affordable and capable, becoming ever more interwoven with everyday life. HCI research has focused largely on innovation around XR technology, exploring new use cases and interaction techniques, understanding how this technology is used and appropriated etc. However, equally important is the investigation and consideration of risks posed by such advances, specifically in contributing to new vulnerabilities and attack vectors with regards to security, safety, and privacy that are unique to XR. For example perceptual manipulations in VR, such as redirected walking or haptic retargeting, have been developed to enhance interaction, yet subversive use of such techniques has been demonstrated to unlock new harms, such as redirecting the VR user into a collision. This workshop will convene researchers focused on HCI, XR, Safety, Security, and Privacy, with the intention of exploring safety, privacy, and security challenges of XR technology. With an HCI lens, workshop participants will engage in critical assessment of emerging XR technologies and develop an XR research agenda that integrates research on interaction technologies and techniques with safety, security and privacy research.

25. Co-existing With a Drone: Using Virtual Reality to Investigate the Effect of the Drone’s Height and Cover Story on Proxemic Behaviours

Abstract

While a growing body of literature has begun to examine proxemics in light of human–robot interactions, it is unclear how insights gained from human–human or human–robot interaction (HRI) apply during human–drone interactions (HDI). Understanding why and how people locate themselves around drones is thus critical to ensure drones are socially acceptable. In this paper, we present a proxemic user study (N=45) in virtual reality focusing on 1) the impact of the drone’s height and 2) the type of cover story used to introduce the drone (framing) on participants’ proxemic preferences. We found that the flying height has a statistically significant effect on the preferred interpersonal distance, whereas no evidence was found related to how the drone was framed. While results also highlight the value of using Virtual Reality for HDI experiments, further research must be carried out to investigate how these findings translate from the virtual to the real world.

26. Advanced Techniques for Preventing Thermal Imaging Attacks

Abstract

Thermal cameras can be used to detect user input on interfaces, such as touchscreens, keyboards, and PIN pads, by recording the heat traces left by the users’ fingers after interaction (e.g., typing a message or entering a PIN) and using them to reconstruct the input. While previous work mitigated the thermal attacks by complicating input or distorting heat traces, our research is the first to propose preventing thermal attack using deep learning (DL) techniques to prevent malicious use of thermal cameras. Our DL models detect interfaces in the thermal camera feed and then obfuscate heat traces on them. Our preliminary findings show that the proposed framework can detect interfaces and eliminate authentication information from thermal images. At the same time, our methods still reveal if an interface has been interacted with. Thus, our approach improves security without impacting the utility of the thermal camera.
