Several technological innovations and challenges are foreseen for SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species), the INFN project for a Nuclear Physics facility with Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs). The project is in advanced construction in Legnaro. It will provide mostly neutron-rich exotic beams, derived by the fission fragments (1013 fiss/s) produced in the interaction of an intense proton beam (200 µA) on a direct UCx target. The expected SPES beam intensities, their quality and, eventually, their maximum energies (up to 11 MeV/A for A = 130) will permit to perform forefront research in nuclear structure and nuclear dynamics, studying a region of the nuclear chart far from stability. By coordinating the developments on the accelerator complex and those of the experimental set-ups, a successful program can be obtained. A huge upgrading of the Linac ALPI post-accelerator is being performed. For what it concerns the instrumentation, some apparatuses are already installed at the Legnaro National Laboratory and they are regularly upgraded. Moreover, new developments are under study and construction, which are very innovative and challenging. The new instrumentation development is well inserted in international collaborations, where it was agreed to make them available for the experimentation at SPES. Several Letter of Intents have been presented to the Scientific Advisory Panel during the 2nd SPES International Workshop (May 26-28, 2014). SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is an INFN project to develop a Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility as an intermediate step toward EURISOL. The key feature of SPES is to provide high intensity and highquality beams of neutron rich nuclei to perform forefront research in nuclear structure, reaction dynamics and interdisciplinary fields like medical, biological and material sciences. The exotic isotopes will be reaccelerated by the ALPI Superconducting Linac at energies of 11 AMeV for masses in the region of A = 130 amu with an expected rate on target of 109 pps. The SPES Direct Target Project at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Italy), devoted to the construction of a Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) Facility within the framework of the new European RIB panorama, is presented. An innovative configuration for the SPES Project, for the production of neutron-rich exotic nuclei, proposes the use of a primary proton beam (40MeV, 0.2mA), directly impinging on a large Multi-Slice Uranium Carbide Direct Target. The goal is to reach a high number of fission products (up to 1013 fissions/s), still keeping a quite low power deposition inside the target. The description of the overall facility together with details on the Direct Target configuration is presented. Thermo-mechanical calculations, material preparation and characterisation, effusion-diffusion model predictions for the estimation of the release time and total release fraction for different life times and isotopes will be discussed. Finally, a scaled (1:5) prototype of the Target System built to be tested and compared under existing proton beam facilities, will be described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
