This article discusses the history of the Saintpaulia species numbering system. Bill Burtt established many of the species for genus Saintpaulia in his monograph of the genus. In this work, he identified 19 species and presented a key and descriptions that could differentiate them apart. The Burtt taxonomic system has endured since the 1950s and 1960s. A different system proposed by Iain Darbyshire and presented at the 2008 African Violet Society of America (AVSA) national convention is explained.

This article discusses the history of Saintpaulia's taxonomy. The genus Saintpaulia was studied by B. L. Burtt in the 1940s-1960s and published a taxonomy system that recognized 20 species and four varieties. Based on a DNA evidence and the more extensive field collections of plants than were available to Burtt, Iain Darbyshire proposed a new taxonomic classification of the species in genus Saintpaulia. The changes in the taxonomy of Saintpaulia are outlined.
