- Abstract
The study aims to examine new livelihoods of women affected by dam heightening in Roseires and Geissan localities- Blue Nile State. The qualitative method was used, to gather in depth reactions and responses that focused on the information needed to analyze the attitudes and perception of women affected by resettlement project. A sample of 42 women was purposely selected from four new towns. The result has revealed that the resettlement resulted in changes of socio and economic livelihood of women. Consequently, women were forced to shift their principal means of livelihood from fishing and farming to wage labors. In addition the findings indicated the increased of the workload of women in the new resettlement area. Women spent more time to collect wood and fetch water. Lack of opportunities limited women to develop strategies to cope with new livelihood. The study concluded that Women have assumed leadership positions in their households and have adopted greater responsibilities for the day-to-day functioning of their families and communities. This has changed gender dynamics and has increased women's workloads. With expanded responsibilities and fewer resources the study recommended that government authorities should plan and implement projects in participatory gender sensitive manners to empower women to adapt themselves to the new livelihood.
