Abstract

The existence of an excessive number of multimuon events observed in many experiments at ultrahigh EAS energies (above 1017 eV) relative to calculations cannot be explained using modern models of hadronic interactions. One way of solving the problem of muon excess is to study the energy characteristics of the EAS muon component. Results are presented from measurements of muon bundle energy characteristics over 7 years of observations. The experimental dependences are compared to results from simulation done with the CORSIKA software package.

The possibility of measuring the characteristics of the response of optical modules of neutrino telescopes to various classes events registered in the volume of the Cherenkov water detector NEVOD is discussed. Results are presented from measuring the response of a prototype optical module with a Hamamatsu R877 photomultiplier to single muons and high-energy events.

Abstract

The Tunka-133 Cherenkov complex for recording extensive air showers (EAS) collected data over seven winters from 2009 to 2017. The differential energy spectra of all particles was acquired in the 6 × 1015–3 × 1018 eV range of energies over 2175 h. The TAIGA-HiSCORE complex is continually being expanded and upgraded. Data acquired by 30 first-line stations over 35 days during the period 2017–2018 is analyzed in this work. As at the Tunka-133 setup, the primary particle energies above 1015 eV are measured using the density of the Cherenkov light flux at a distance of 200 m from a shower’s axis. Data on lower energies are collected by determining the energy of the light flux near a shower’s axis. This results in a spectrum of 2 × 1014–1017 eV. The combined spectrum for the two systems covers a range of 2 × 1014–2 × 1018 eV.

Abstract

Work is currently under way in the Tunka Valley, 50 km from Lake Baikal, to create the TAIGA gamma observatory for studying gamma radiation and cosmic ray fluxes in the 1013–1018 eV range of energies. To detect gamma rays with energies above tens of TeV, a hybrid method of detecting showers is implemented. It is based on data obtained by the TAIGA Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) and the wide-angle TAIGA-HiSCORE array. The preliminary results from processing the telescope’s data for the low-energy region (>2–3 TeV) are presented. Joint events with energy more than 50 TeV are analyzed and compared to Monte Carlo calculations.

Abstract

Energy characteristics of the muon component of extensive air showers (EASes) are investigated at the NEVOD experimental complex in order to solve the problem of a detected excess of muons in EASes at ultrahigh energies, relative to simulation results. The dependences of the energy deposit of muon bundles on the zenith angle and the local muon density are obtained for primary energies of 10–1000 PeV. The results from comparing the data to simulations performed with the CORSIKA program are presented.

Abstract

The TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma-ray Astronomy) experiment aims at observing gamma-rays in the energy range from 1 TeV to several 100 TeV. The operation of the observatory is based on a new hybrid approach that combines imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) and wide-angle Cherenkov detectors (TAIGA-HiSCORE) for measuring times of extensive air shower (EAS) light front arrival. Monte Carlo simulations are compared to real data to determine the performance of the detector setup. Dedicated software and algorithms are described, model parameters are given, and an overview of the current status of model-based performance studies is presented.

Abstract

The relevance and benefits of the new TAIGA gamma observatory complex in the Tunka Valley (50 km from Lake Baikal) are discussed. The main aim of the TAIGA installation is to study high-energy gamma radiation and search for cosmic pevatrons. The first series of gamma stations was commissioned in 2019 and covers an area of 1 km2. Its expected integral gamma radiation sensitivity at an energy of 100 TeV over 300 h of source monitoring is (2–5) × 10−13 TeV cm−2 s−1. It is planned to expand the effective area of TAIGA gamma observation to 10 km2 in the future.

Abstract

The NEVOD experimental complex was created at MEPhI. It includes several facilities for studying the electron–photon, muon, and hadron components of the EAS in the energy range of 1 PeV to 1 EeV. This work presents the first results for two months of the joint operation of five facilities (NEVOD-EAS, CWD, CTS, PRISMA-32, and DECOR). The problems of synchronizing the facilities and selecting joint events are considered. The experimental data of these facilities are analyzed for different components of the EAS in overlapping energy ranges.

Results are presented from analyzing experimental data on 0.1–10 TeV cascade showers generated by muons in the NEVOD Cherenkov water detector. The procedure for selecting and reconstructing the parameters of events with cascades in the detector volume is discussed. Results are presented from measurements of the zenith angle distribution of cascades for different energies. The measured distributions are compared to results from calculations.

Abstract

Results from investigating electromagnetic cascade showers in the NEVOD Cherenkov water calorimeter (CWC) with a dense lattice of quasi-spherical detecting modules are presented. The spatial distribution of the Cherenkov radiation from the cascades is measured, and the dependence of radiation intensity on the depth of shower development and on the distance from its axis with a step of 0.5 meter in both directions is obtained. Experimental results are compared to calculations based on different models of angular distribution of cascade particles. Basing on the obtained results the algorithm of iterative reconstruction of parameters of showers on the basis of CWC data is proposed and the energy spectrum of showers with energies from 100 GeV to 20 TeV is measured.

Abstract

Results from studying the amplitude response of PMTs and estimating the probability of correctly determining the direction of a particle track using quasispherical modules for different water transparencies and detection thresholds are described. Events are selected by the scintillation counters of the system of calibration telescopes and supermodules of the DECOR coordinate-tracking detector. Experimental data obtained before and after the startup of a new water purification system are used in the analysis.

The NEVOD-EAS setup is designed for independent estimation of the EAS parameters recorded in the NEVOD-DECOR experiment in the region of the energy spectrum knee. The setup’s recording system is based on the clusters of scintillation detectors for the EAS electron-photon component, located on the territory of MEPhI. Characteristics of the shower array recording system that ensure detection, data acquisition and primary processing, and the time synchronization of clusters are discussed, along with results of studying the nonuniformity of NEVOD-EAS scintillation detector responses.

Abstract

The first results from studying the energy deposits of inclined muon bundles in a Cherenkov water detector on the Earth’s surface are presented. The general response of the NEVOD Cherenkov calorimeter’s PMT is used as a measure of the energy deposited (proportional to the muon energy losses in the detector’s matter), while the local muon density at the point of observation is estimated using data from the DECOR coordinate-tracking detector. It is found that the energy deposit normalized to the muon density depends largely on the zenith angle. A comparison of the experimental results and those from EAS muon component simulations using the CORSIKA package shows that the average energy of muons detected in the bundles grows rapidly as the zenith angle increases, reaching ∼500 GeV near the horizon.

Abstract

An approach to the estimating the parameters of cascade showers with unknown axes, generated in NEVOD Cherenkov water detector (CWD) by muons with zenith angles in the range from 50° to 90°, is described. A technique for estimating the position of a cascade axis using the CWD response is proposed, along with criteria that would allow us to select events with cascades from ones with intense releases of energy. The technique and the criteria are tested on cascades generated by near-horizon high-energy muons, registered by the DECOR tracking detector. Preliminary results from measuring the energy spectrum of cascade showers are presented.

The results of investigation of muon bundles at the Earth’s surface in a wide range of zenith angles on the basis of the new phenomenological characteristic of extensive air showers—spectra of local muon density—have been investigated. Features of the local-density spectra are considered within a simple analytical model. The expected distributions of muon density in a wide range of zenith angles and primary energies, calculated on the basis of the CORSIKA code, are compared with the experimental data.

A new installation is dedicated to the independent evaluation of extensive air shower (EAS) energies detected in the NEVOD-DECOR experiment in the knee region of the energy spectrum. The design for the measuring system of the shower installation is based on clusters of scintillation detectors that are located on the roofs of laboratory buildings at MEPhI (Moscow) and will detect the electromagnetic (for near-vertical showers) and muon (for large zenith angles) EAS components. Features of the measuring system, the system for data acquisition and processing, and the results from investigating the characteristics of a single detector are discussed, along with the algorithm for event formation by the data of separate clusters.

Abstract

We discuss measuring cascade shower energy using the NEVOD Cherenkov water detector with a spatial lattice of quasi-spherical modules (QSMs). Dense QSM spacing makes it possible to reconstruct a number of cascade particles along the shower axis from the PMT response amplitude. Our cascade curve reconstruction technique is applied to showers generated by near-horizontal high-energy muons selected using the DECOR coordinate detector deployed around NEVOD. The first results from cascade energy spectrum measurements are reported.
