Acute gastroenteritis is frequent in children worldwide. Mortality induced by acute dehydration in children with gastroenteritis is the third cause of death after peri-natal death and respiratory diseases induced death. Main pathogenetic mechanism of severe outcome is dehydration. Our paper presents diagnostic features and treatment approaches in children with acute dehydration induced by enteritis. Objective tools generated by experts [PALS and ERC] are presented and practical case-scenarios are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper reviews present and principal aspects of type 1 diabetes mellitus in children. There are presented: epidemiology of type 1 diabetes mellitus, with important geographical variations that the magnitude of the problem, main etiopathogenical aspects (genetical, immunological, environmental), etiologic classification of diabetes according to ISPAD 2000 Guidelines with main disease mechanisms and clinical features in children. The authors also discuss laboratory diagnosis and complex therapy of diabetes, which lies on the therapeutic triad: insulin therapy with available products, diet and exercise along with pacient education and self-monitoring. There are also mentioned acute and chronic complications, autoimmune associated diseases, legal matters and prognosis of this disease with immune pathogenic features in focus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, currently, we come to grip with „aflutter little child“ which, forth somatic disorders, present also hyperactivity, inattention, and social interaction deficits and communication disorders. At this age group, currently, we find symptoms which did not fit with classical clinical features of Autism (described by Leo Kanner) neither with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). For these reasons appear a lot of differential diagnostic problems between ADHD and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder, expression used by Baron-Cohen for Pervasive Developmental Disorder), disorders with an increase of incidence in the last years. All this generate a lot of questions for nosological enframe: ADHD, TSA, ADHD co-morbid with TSA, or a new disorder? In our paper we make a review of recent epidemiology and aetiology aspects because in the last years there is an important concern for the increase of prevalence and incidence of these two disorders. We wish to emphasize that early identification and intervention allows the elaboration of some targeted therapeutically strategies, psychotherapeutic and pharmacological, adapted to each child, with increased efficiency. In this retrospective unicenter study we aimed to outline the key features of the first 100 cases of COVID-19 hospitalized in our clinic after designation of it as front line unit for hospitalization of these cases. Thus, the average age of cases was 44.7 years (SD: 15.9) and the prevalence of female was 57.4%. By age groups, prevalence of young patients (7.8%) was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than the prevalence of adult patients (77.2%). The most prevalent occupation (31.7%) was healthcare worker. The most frecvent exposure to source of infection was represented by attending healthcare facilities (44.6%), followed by having contact with COVID-19 confirmed/suspect case (30.7%), and recent international travel (18.8%). Of the 30% of cases in which at least one health precondition was recorded the most prevalent (13.9%) of such condition was chronic cardiovascular disease including high blood presure. In regard with severity, to note that 6 patients died within 14 days of hospital admission, all fatalities have occurred in very old patients and 83.3% of them had chronic kidney disease. In the end, we express the hope that data outlined in this paper will help for better management of COVID-19 pandemic.

Thrombosis is the result of an imbalance between two complex systems: hemostasis and fibrinolysis. Although the incidence of thromboembolism is lower in children than in adults, the associated morbidity is clinically relevant. This paper summarizes the main risk factors – important in defining effective strategies for primary thrombo-prophylaxis in children at risk, the diagnostic criteria and the optimal therapeutic approach, which have mostly been extrapolated from the adult’s recommendations until now.
