Search

The dynamical states of molecular clouds may affect the properties of the stars they form. In the vicinity of the Trifid Nebula ($d=1180\pm25$ pc), the main star cluster (Trifid Main) lies within an expanding section of the molecular cloud; however, ~0.3 deg to the north (Trifid North), the cloud's velocity structure is more tranquil. We acquired a Chandra X-ray observation to identify pre-main-sequence stars in Trifid North, complementing a previous observation of Trifid Main. In Trifid North, we identified 51 candidate pre-main-sequence stars, of which 13 are high-confidence Trifid members based on Gaia EDR3 parallaxes and proper motions. We also re-analyzed membership of Trifid Main and separated out multiple background stellar associations. Trifid North represents a stellar population ~10% as rich as Trifid Main that formed in a separate part of the cloud. The 1D stellar velocity dispersion in Trifid North ($0.6\pm0.2$ km/s) is three times lower than in Trifid Main ($1.9\pm0.2$ km/s). Furthermore, in Trifid Main, proper motions indicate that the portion of the star cluster superimposed on the optical nebula is expanding. Expansion of the HII region around the O-star HD 164492A, and the resulting gas expulsion, can explain both the motions of the stars and gas in Trifid Main. IRAS 09002-4732 is a poorly studied embedded cluster of stars in the Vela Molecular Ridge at a distance of 1.7kpc. Deep observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, combined with existing optical and infrared surveys, produce a catalog of 441 probable pre-main sequence members of the region. The stellar spatial distribution has two components: most stars reside in a rich, compact, elliptical cluster, but a minority reside within a molecular filament several parsecs long that straddles the cluster. The filament has active distributed star formation with dozens of unclustered protostars. The cluster pre-main sequence population is $\leq 0.8$ Myr old and deeply embedded; its most massive member is extremely young producing an ultracompact H II region. The cluster total population deduced from the X-ray luminosity function is surprisingly rich, twice that of the Orion Nebula Cluster. The cluster core is remarkably dense where strong N-body interactions should be occurring; its Initial Mass Function may be deficient in massive stars. We infer that IRAS 09002-4732 is a rare case where a rich cluster is forming today in a molecular filament, consistent with astrophysical models of cluster formation in clouds that involve the hierarchical formation and merging of groups in molecular filaments., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures, 3 machine readable tables. X-ray sources with very few counts can be identified with low-noise X-ray detectors such as ACIS onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. These sources are often too faint for parametric spectral modeling using well-established methods such as fitting with XSPEC. We discuss the estimation of apparent and intrinsic broad-band X-ray fluxes and soft X-ray absorption from gas along the line of sight to these sources, using nonparametric methods. Apparent flux is estimated from the ratio of the source count rate to the instrumental effective area averaged over the chosen band. Absorption, intrinsic flux, and errors on these quantities are estimated from comparison of source photometric quantities with those of high S/N spectra that were simulated using spectral models characteristic of the class of astrophysical sources under study. The concept of this method is similar to the long-standing use of color-magnitude diagrams in optical and infrared astronomy, with X-ray median energy replacing color index and X-ray source counts replacing magnitude. Our nonparametric method is tested against the apparent spectra of 2000 faint sources in the Chandra observation of the rich young stellar cluster in the M17 HII region. We show that the intrinsic X-ray properties can be determined with little bias and reasonable accuracy using these observable photometric quantities without employing often uncertain and time-consuming methods of non-linear parametric spectral modeling. The full stellar population of NGC 6334, one of the most spectacular regions of massive star formation in the nearby Galaxy, have not been well-sampled in past studies. We analyze here a mosaic of two Chandra X-ray Observatory images of the region using sensitive data analysis methods, giving a list of 1607 faint X-ray sources with arcsecond positions and approximate line-of-sight absorption. About 95 percent of these are expected to be cluster members, most lower mass pre-main sequence stars. Extrapolating to low X-ray levels, the total stellar population is estimated to be 20-30,000 pre-main sequence stars. The X-ray sources show a complicated spatial pattern with about 10 distinct star clusters. The heavily-obscured clusters are mostly associated with previously known far-infrared sources and radio HII regions. The lightly-obscured clusters are mostly newly identified in the X-ray images. Dozens of likely OB stars are found, both in clusters and dispersed throughout the region, suggesting that star formation in the complex has proceeded over millions of years. The mysterious high galactic latitude cometary globule CG12 has been observed with the ACIS detector on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We detect 128 X-ray sources; half are likely young stars formed within the globule's head. This new population of >50 T-Tauri stars and one new embedded protostar is far larger than the previously reported few intermediate-mass and two protostellar members of the cloud. Most of the newly discovered stars have masses 0.2-0.7Mo, and 9-15% have K-band excesses from inner protoplanetary disks. X-ray properties provide an independent distance estimate consistent with CG12's unusual location >200pc above the Galactic plane. The star formation efficiency in CG12 appears to be 15-35%, far above that seen in other triggered molecular globules. The IC 1396N cometary globule within the large nearby HII region IC 1396 has been observed with the ACIS detector on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We detect 117 X-ray sources, of which ~50-60 are likely members of the young open cluster Trumpler~37 dispersed throughout the HII region, and 25 are associated with young stars formed within the globule. Spitzer/2MASS photometry shows the X-ray population is very young: 3 older Class III stars, 16 classical T Tauri stars, 6 protostars including a Class 0/I system. We infer a total T Tauri population of ~30 stars in the globule, including the undetected population, with a star formation efficiency of 1-4%. An elongated source spatial distribution with an age gradient oriented towards the exciting star is discovered in the X-ray population of IC 1396N, supporting similar findings in other cometary globules. The geometric and age distribution is consistent with the RDI model for triggered star formation in CGs by HII region shocks. The inferred velocity of the shock front propagating into the globule is ~0.6km/s. The large number of X-ray-luminous protostars in the globule suggests either an unusually high ratio of Class I/0 vs. Class II/III stars, or a non-standard IMF favoring higher mass stars by the triggering process. The Chandra source associated with the luminous Class 0/I protostar IRAS 21391+5802 is one of the youngest stars ever detected in the X-ray band. We report the Chandra detection of hard X-ray emission from the Welch ring in W49A, an organized structure of ultra-compact (UC) HII regions containing a dozen nascent early-type stars. Two UC HII regions are associated with hard X-ray emission in a deep Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer image exposed for 96.7 ks. One of the two X-ray sources has no near-infrared counterpart and is extended by ~5 arcsec, or ~0.3 pc, at a distance of ~11.4 kpc, which is spatially aligned with the cometary radio continuum emission associated with the UC HII region. The X-ray spectrum of the emission, when fit with a thermal model, indicates a heavily absorbed plasma with extinction of \~5x10^{23}/cm^{2}, temperature of ~7 keV, and X-ray luminosity in the 3.0-8.0 keV band of ~3x10^{33} ergs/s. Both the luminosity and the size of the emission resemble the extended hard emission found in UC HII regions in Sagittarius B2, yet they are smaller by an order of magnitude than the emission found in massive star clusters such as NGC 3603. Three possibilities are discussed for the cause of the hard extended emission in the Welch ring: an ensemble of unresolved point sources, shocked interacting winds of the young O stars, and a wind-blown bubble interacting with ambient cold matter., 12 pages, 7 figures, ApJ in press. We present a study of the X-ray sources detected in the vicinity of two density peaks in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 behind the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), as seen in the exceptionally deep (~10 days) exposure of the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). We focus on a 40"*50" region around the Becklin-Neugebauer object and Kleinmann-Low nebula (collectively BN-KL) and a 60"*75" region around OMC-1S. Forty-three and sixty X-ray sources were detected in BN-KL and OMC-1S, respectively, of which half and one-third, respectively, were found to be foreground members of the ONC, while the remaining sources are identified as obscured X-ray sources. All but 5 and 18 of these sources have near-infrared stellar counterparts, and 22 of these appear to be young stellar objects (YSOs). X-ray sources are found close to four luminous mid-IR sources namely BN, IRc3-i2, IRc2-C, and Source n; their X-ray variability and spectral properties are typical of coronal activity in low-mass stars rather than wind emission from massive stars, suggesting that the X-ray emission may be arising from companions. The X-ray light curve of the X-ray source close to BN shows a periodicity of ~8.3 days and from an X-ray image deconvolution of the region around BN, we conclude that either BN itself or a low mass companion with a projected separation of ~200 AU was detected (abridged).

The Chandra Orion Ultradeep project (COUP) observation described in a companion paper by Getman et al. provides an exceptionally deep X-ray survey of the Orion Nebula Cluster and associated embedded young stellar objects. Membership of the region is important for studies of the stellar IMF, cluster dynamics, and star formation. The COUP study detected 1616 X-ray sources. In this study we confirm cloud membership for 1315 stars, identify 16 probable foreground field stars having optical counterparts with discrepant proper motions, and classify the remaining 285 X-ray sources, of which 51 are lightly and 234 heavily obscured. The 51 lightly obscured sources without known counterparts fall into three groups. (i) Sixteen are likely new members of the Orion Nebula Cluster. (ii) Two with unusually soft and non-flaring X-ray emission appear to be associated with nebular shocks, and may be new examples of X-rays produced at the bow shocks of Herbig-Haro outflows. (iii) The remaining thirty three are very weak uncertain sources, possibly spurious. Out of 234 heavily absorbed sources without optical or near-infrared counterparts 75 COUP sources are likely new embedded cloud members (with membership for 42 confirmed by powerful X-ray flares), and the remaining 159 are likely extragalactic AGN seen through the molecular cloud, as argued by a careful simulation of the extragalactic background population. Finally, a few new binary companions to Orion stars may have been found, but most cases of proximate COUP sources can be attributed to chance superpositions in this crowded field., 49 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. We present the first high-spatial-resolution X-ray images of two high-mass star forming regions, the Omega Nebula (M 17) and the Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237--2246), obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) instrument. The massive clusters powering these H II regions are resolved at the arcsecond level into >900 (M 17) and >300 (Rosette) stellar sources similar to those seen in closer young stellar clusters. However, we also detect soft diffuse X-ray emission on parsec scales that is spatially and spectrally distinct from the point source population. The diffuse emission has luminosity L_x ~ 3.4e33 ergs/s in M~17 with plasma energy components at kT ~0.13 and ~0.6 keV (1.5 and 7 MK), while in Rosette it has L_x \~6e32 ergs/s with plasma energy components at kT ~0.06 and ~0.8 keV (0.7 and 9 MK). This extended emission most likely arises from the fast O-star winds thermalized either by wind-wind collisions or by a termination shock against the surrounding media. We establish that only a small portion of the wind energy and mass appears in the observed diffuse X-ray plasma; in these blister H II regions, we suspect that most of it flows without cooling into the low-density interstellar medium. These data provide compelling observational evidence that strong wind shocks are present in H II regions.

An extremely deep X-ray survey (about 1 Ms) of the Hubble Deep Field North and its environs (about 450 arcmin^2) has been performed with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This is one of the two deepest X-ray surveys ever performed; for point sources near the aim point it reaches 0.5-2.0 keV and 2-8 keV flux limits of 3 x 10^{-17} erg/cm^2/s and 2 x 10^{-16} erg/cm^2/s, respectively. Here we provide source catalogs along with details of the observations, data reduction, and technical analysis. Observing conditions, such as background, were excellent for almost all of the exposure. We have detected 370 distinct point sources: 360 in the 0.5-8.0 keV band, 325 in the 0.5-2.0 keV band, 265 in the 2-8 keV band, and 145 in the 4-8 keV band. Two new Chandra sources in the HDF-N itself are reported and discussed. Source positions are accurate to within 0.6-1.7 arcsec (at 90% confidence) depending mainly on the off-axis angle. We also detect two highly significant extended X-ray sources and several other likely extended X-ray sources. We present basic number count results for sources located near the center of the field. Source densities of 7100^{+1100}_{-940} deg^{-2} (at 4.2 x 10^{-17} erg/cm^2/s) and 4200^{+670}_{-580} deg^{-2} (at 3.8 x 10^{-16} erg/cm^2/s) are observed in the soft and hard bands, respectively.

We present results from a 479.7 ks Chandra exposure of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N) and its immediate vicinity. In our X-ray image, the deepest ever reported with a 0.5-2.0 keV flux limit of about 4.9 x 10^{-17} erg/cm^2/s, we detect four new HDF-N X-ray sources bringing the total number of such sources to 12. We present results from a 221.9 ks Chandra exposure of the HDF-N and its vicinity, concentrating on the 8.6' X 8.7' area covered by the Caltech Faint Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (the `Caltech area'). The minimum detectable fluxes in the 0.5-2 keV and 2-8 keV bands are 1.3e-16 cgs and 6.5e-16 cgs, respectively and a total of 82 sources are detected. More than 80% of the extragalactic X-ray background in the 2-8 keV band is resolved. Redshifts are available for 96% of the sources with R 5.0) objects. Where both the infrared and the X-ray coverage are deepest, 75% of the X-ray sources are detected by ISO; the high X-ray to infrared matching rate bodes well for future sensitive infrared observations of faint X-ray sources. Four of the 33 very red objects that have been identified in the Caltech area by Hogg et al. (2000) are detected in X-rays; these four are among our hardest Chandra sources, and we argue that they contain moderately luminous obscured AGN. Overall, however, the small Chandra detection fraction suggests a relatively small AGN content in the optically selected very red object population. About 1000 X-ray emitting young pre-main sequence (PMS) stars distributed in mass from 0.05 to 50 solar masses are detected in an image of the Orion Nebula obtained with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The ACIS front-illuminated CCDs on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory were damaged in the extreme environment of the Earth's radiation belts, resulting in enhanced charge transfer inefficiency (CTI). This produces a row dependence in gain, event grade, and energy resolution. We model the CTI as a function of input photon energy, including the effects of detrapping (charge trailing), shielding within an event (charge in the leading pixels of the 3x3 event island protects the rest of the island by filling traps), and nonuniform spatial distribution of traps. This technique cannot fully recover the degraded energy resolution, but it reduces the position dependence of gain and grade distributions. By correcting the grade distributions as well as the event amplitudes, we can improve the instrument's quantum efficiency. We outline our model for CTI correction and discuss how the corrector can improve astrophysical results derived from ACIS data.

Among young binary stars whose magnetospheres are expected to collide, only two systems have been observed near periastron in the X-ray band: the low-mass DQ Tau and the older and more massive HD 152404. Both exhibit elevated levels of X-ray emission at periastron. Our goal is to determine whether colliding magnetospheres in young high-eccentricity binaries commonly produce elevated average levels of X-ray activity. This work is based on Chandra snapshots of multiple periastron and non-periastron passages in four nearby young eccentric binaries (Parenago 523, RX J1622.7-2325 Nw, UZ Tau E, and HD 152404). We find that for the merged sample of all 4 binaries the current X-ray data show an increasing average X-ray flux near periastron (at about 2.5-sigma level). Further comparison of these data with the X-ray properties of hundreds of young stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster, produced by the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP), indicates that the X-ray emission from the merged sample of our binaries can not be explained within the framework of the COUP-like X-ray activity. However, due to the inhomogeneities of the merged binary sample and the relatively low statistical significance of the detected flux increase, these findings are regarded as tentative only. The Massive Young star-forming complex Study in Infrared and X-ray (MYStIX) uses data from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory to identify and characterize the young stellar populations in 20 Galactic (d 10,000 X-ray sources is presented. In comparison to other published Chandra source lists for the same regions, the number of MYStIX-detected faint X-ray sources in a region is often doubled. While the higher catalog sensitivity increases the chance of false detections, it also increases the number of matches to infrared stars. X-ray emitting contaminants include foreground stars, background stars, and extragalactic sources. The X-ray properties of sources in these classes are discussed.

The MYStIX project (Massive Young Star-Forming Complex Study in Infrared and X-rays) provides a comparative study of 20 Galactic massive star-forming complexes (d = 0.4 to 3.6 kpc). Probable stellar members in each target complex are identified using X-ray and/or infrared data via two pathways: (1) X-ray detections of young/massive stars with coronal activity/strong winds; or (2) infrared excess (IRE) selection of young stellar objects (YSOs) with circumstellar disks and/or protostellar envelopes. We present the methodology for the second pathway, using Spitzer/IRAC, 2MASS, and UKIRT imaging and photometry. Although IRE selection of YSOs is welltrodden territory, MYStIX presents unique challenges. We combine IR spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with IR color cuts and spatial clustering analysis to identify IRE sources and isolate probable YSO members in each MYStIX target field from the myriad types of contaminating sources that can resemble YSOs: extragalactic sources, evolved stars, nebular knots, and even unassociated foreground/background YSOs. Applying our methodology consistently across 18 of the target complexes, we produce the MYStIX IRE Source (MIRES) Catalog comprising 20,719 sources, including 8686 probable stellar members of the MYStIX target complexes. We also classify the SEDs of 9365 IR counterparts to MYStIX X-ray sources to assist the first pathway, the identification of X-ray detected stellar members. The MIRES catalog provides a foundation for follow-up studies of diverse phenomena related to massive star cluster formation, including protostellar outflows, circumstellar disks, and sequential star formation triggered by massive star feedback processes., Comment: 67 pages, 11 figures.
