We present a pulse timing analysis of NICER observations of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4$-$3658 during the outburst that started on 2022 August 19. Similar to previous outbursts, after decaying from a peak luminosity of $\simeq 1\times10^{36} \, \mathrm{erg \, s^{-1}}$ in about a week, the pulsar entered in a $\sim 1$ month-long reflaring stage. Comparison of the average pulsar spin frequency during the outburst with those previously measured confirmed the long-term spin derivative of $\dot{\nu}_{\textrm{SD}}=-(1.15\pm0.06)\times 10^{-15} \, \mathrm{Hz\,s^{-1}}$, compatible with the spin-down torque of a $\approx 10^{26} \, \mathrm{G \, cm^3}$ rotating magnetic dipole. For the first time in the last twenty years, the orbital phase evolution shows evidence for a decrease of the orbital period. The long-term behaviour of the orbit is dominated by a $\sim 11 \, \mathrm{s}$ modulation of the orbital phase epoch consistent with a $\sim 21 \, \mathrm{yr}$ period. An ensemble of inspiraling supermassive black hole binaries should produce a stochastic background of very low frequency gravitational waves. This stochastic background is predicted to be a power law, with a spectral index of -2/3, and it should be detectable by a network of precisely timed millisecond pulsars, widely distributed on the sky. This paper reports a new "time slicing" analysis of the 11-year data release from the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) using 34 millisecond pulsars. Methods to flag potential "false positive" signatures are developed, including techniques to identify responsible pulsars. Mitigation strategies are then presented. We demonstrate how an incorrect noise model can lead to spurious signals, and show how independently modeling noise across 30 Fourier components, spanning NANOGrav's frequency range, effectively diagnoses and absorbs the excess power in gravitational-wave searches. This results in a nominal, and expected, progression of our gravitational-wave statistics. The mergers of supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) promise to be incredible sources of gravitational waves (GWs). While the oscillatory part of the merger gravitational waveform will be outside the frequency sensitivity range of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs), the non-oscillatory GW memory effect is detectable. Further, any burst of gravitational waves will produce GW memory, making memory a useful probe of unmodeled exotic sources and new physics. We searched the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) 11-year data set for GW memory. This dataset is sensitive to very low frequency GWs of $\sim3$ to $400$ nHz (periods of $\sim11$ yr $-$ $1$ mon). Finding no evidence for GWs, we placed limits on the strain amplitude of GW memory events during the observation period. We then used the strain upper limits to place limits on the rate of GW memory causing events. At a strain of $2.5\times10^{-14}$, corresponding to the median upper limit as a function of source sky position, we set a limit on the rate of GW memory events at $, Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

This work presents an investigation of the stochastic X-ray variability from the 164 Hz accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J17062-6143, based on regular observations collected with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer between 2017 July and 2020 August. Over this period, the power density spectrum showed a stable morphology, with broad $\sim25\%$ rms band-limited noise below 16 Hz. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were occasionally observed, with the most notably detections including a low-frequency QPO centered at 2.7 Hz and a sharp QPO centered at 115 Hz that may be a 2:3 resonance with the spin frequency. Further, the energy dependence of the band-limited noise is studied through a spectroscopic analysis of the complex covariance in two frequency intervals. It is found that the power law continuum is the primary driver for the observed variability, although the thermal (blackbody) emission also appears to be intrinsically variable in area ($5\%$ rms) and temperature ($1\%$ rms). Notably, the 1 keV emission feature seen in all X-ray spectra of IGR J17062-6143 varies with the same amplitude as the power law, but systematically lags behind that continuum emission. These results appear consistent with a scenario in which a time variable Compton-scattering corona is the primary source for the observed stochastic variability, with the variability observed in the emission feature and at the lowest photon energies being due to the disk reflection of the power law continuum., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. The frequency dependent eclipses of the radio emission from millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in compact binary systems provide an opportunity to understand the eclipse mechanism and to determine the nature of the eclipsing medium. We combine multifrequency observations from the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and model the broadband radio spectrum in the optically thick to thin transition regime to constrain the eclipse mechanism. The best-fit model to the eclipse phase spectra favors synchrotron absorption by relativistic electrons. We are able to strongly constrain the frequency of onset of the eclipse to 345$\pm$5 $\mathrm{MHz}$, which is an order of magnitude more precise than previous estimates. The dependence on the magnetic field strength of synchrotron absorption allowed us to estimate the magnetic field strength of the eclipse medium to be $\sim$13 $\mathrm{G}$, which is very similar to the values obtained by considering a pressure balance between the incident pulsar wind and the stellar wind of the companion. Applying this method to other millisecond binary pulsars will enable us to determine if the eclipse mechanisms are all the same and also estimate the wind and magnetic field properties of the companion stars. We report on the results of multi-frequency follow-up observations of three pulsars (PSRs J0026+6320, J2208+5500 and J2217+5733) discovered with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). These observations were carried out with the GMRT and the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). We report improved timing solutions for all three pulsars. For PSR J2208+5500, we estimate the nulling fraction to be 53(3)\%. The steep spectrum of this pulsar, its single component profile, and narrow pulse width suggest its single component to be a core component. If so, this significant cessation of emission in a core component is inconsistent with a geometric origin of nulls, such as those due to `empty' sightline traverses, and more likely due to intrinsic changes in the pulsar magnetosphere. We have measured scatter-broadening timescales at 325 and 610 MHz for PSRs J0026+6320 and J2217+5733. The implied scatter-broadening frequency scaling index of $-$2.9 for both pulsars is different from that expected assuming Kolmogorov turbulence in the interstellar medium. We also report spectral indices, obtained from imaging observations, for all three pulsars for the first time. The spectra for two of these pulsars indicate a possible spectral turnover between 100$-$300 MHz. Multi-frequency timing analyses carried out for these pulsars have enabled us to determine dispersion measures (DMs) with accuracies of 0.01 pc cm\sups{--3}. The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) project has the primary goal of detecting and characterizing low-frequency gravitational waves through high-precision pulsar timing. The mitigation of interstellar effects is crucial to achieve the necessary precision for gravitational wave detection. Effects like dispersion and scattering are more influential at lower observing frequencies, with the variation of these quantities over week-month timescales requiring high-cadence multi-frequency observations for pulsar timing projects. In this work, we utilize the dual-frequency observing capability of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and evaluate the potential decrease in dispersion measure (DM) uncertainties when combined with existing pulsar timing array data. We present the timing analysis for four millisecond pulsars observed with the GMRT simultaneously at 322 and 607 MHz, and compare the DM measurements with those obtained through NANOGrav observations with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and Arecibo Observatory at 1400 to 2300 MHz frequencies. Measured DM values with the GMRT and NANOGrav program show significant offsets for some pulsars, which could be caused by pulse profile evolution in the two frequency bands. In comparison to the predicted DM uncertainties when incorporating these low-frequency data into the NANOGrav dataset, we find that higher-precision GMRT data is necessary to provide improved DM measurements. Through the detection and analysis of pulse profile baseline ripple in data on test pulsar B1929+10, we find that, while not important for this data, it may be relevant for other timing datasets. We report on a coherent timing analysis of the 163 Hz accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J17062-6143. Using data collected with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer and XMM-Newton, we investigated the pulsar evolution over a timespan of four years. We obtained a unique phase-coherent timing solution for the stellar spin, finding the source to be spinning up at a rate of $(3.77\pm0.09)\times 10^{-15}$ Hz/s. We further find that the $0.4-6$ keV pulse fraction varies gradually between 0.5% and 2.5% following a sinusoidal oscillation with a $1210\pm40$ day period. Finally, we supplemented this analysis with an archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observation, and obtained a phase coherent model for the binary orbit spanning 12 years, yielding an orbital period derivative measurement of $(8.4\pm2.0) \times 10^{-12}$ s/s. This large orbital period derivative is inconsistent with a binary evolution that is dominated by gravitational wave emission, and is suggestive of highly non-conservative mass transfer in the binary system., 16 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. In this paper we introduce a new Python package, the Pulsar Signal Simulator, or PsrSigSim, which is designed to simulate a pulsar signal from emission at the pulsar, through the interstellar medium, to observation by a radio telescope, and digitization in a standard data format. We use the PsrSigSim to simulate observations of three millisecond pulsars, PSRs J1744--1134, B1855+09, and B1953+29, to explore the covariances between frequency-dependent parameters, such as variations in the dispersion measure (DM), pulse profile evolution with frequency, and pulse scatter broadening. We show that the PsrSigSim can produce realistic simulated data and can accurately recover the parameters injected into the data. We also find that while there are covariances when fitting DM variations and frequency-dependent parameters, they have little effect on timing precision. Our simulations also show that time-variable scattering delays decrease the accuracy and increase the variability of the recovered DM and frequency-dependent parameters. Despite this, our simulations also show that the time-variable scattering delays have little impact on the root mean square of the timing residuals. This suggests that the variability seen in recovered DM, when time-variable scattering delays are present, is due to a covariance between the two parameters, with the DM modeling out the additional scattering delays., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are believed to have descended from low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), which have experienced substantial mass transfer and tidal circularization. Therefore, they should have very circular orbits. However, the discovery of several eccentric binary MSPs (with eccentricity $e\sim 0.01-0.1$) challenges this standard picture. Three models have been proposed thus far based on accretion-induced collapse of massive white dwarfs (WDs), neutron star-strange star transition, and formation of circumbinary disks. All of them are subject to various uncertainties, and are not entirely consistent with observations. Here we propose an alternative model taking into account the influence of thermonuclear flashes on proto-WDs. We assume that the flashes lead to asymmetrical mass ejection, which imparts a mild kick on the proto-WDs. By simulating orbital changes of binary MSPs with multiple shell flashes, we show that it is possible to reproduce the observed eccentricities, provided that the kick velocities are around a few kms$^{-1}$., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission is the first focusing X-ray telescope in the hard X-ray (3-79 keV) band. Among the phenomena that can be studied in this energy band, some require high time resolution and stability: rotation-powered and accreting millisecond pulsars, fast variability from black holes and neutron stars, X-ray bursts, and more. Moreover, a good alignment of the timestamps of X-ray photons to UTC is key for multi-instrument studies of fast astrophysical processes. In this Paper, we describe the timing calibration of the NuSTAR mission. In particular, we present a method to correct the temperature-dependent frequency response of the on-board temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. Together with measurements of the spacecraft clock offsets obtained during downlinks passes, this allows a precise characterization of the behavior of the oscillator. The calibrated NuSTAR event timestamps for a typical observation are shown to be accurate to a precision of ~65 microsec., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Comments welcome

We report the detection of 376.05 Hz (2.66 ms) coherent X-ray pulsations in NICER observations of a transient outburst of the low-mass X-ray binary IGR J17494-3030 in 2020 October/November. The system is an accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar in a 75 minute ultracompact binary. The mass donor is most likely a $\simeq 0.02 M_\odot$ finite-entropy white dwarf composed of He or C/O. The fractional rms pulsed amplitude is 7.4%, and the soft (1-3 keV) X-ray pulse profile contains a significant second harmonic. The pulsed amplitude and pulse phase lag (relative to our mean timing model) are energy-dependent, each having a local maximum at 4 keV and 1.5 keV, respectively. We also recovered the X-ray pulsations in archival 2012 XMM-Newton observations, allowing us to measure a long-term pulsar spin-down rate of $\dot\nu = -2.1(7)\times10^{-14}$ Hz/s and to infer a pulsar surface dipole magnetic field strength of $\simeq 10^9$ G. Modeling of the NICER X-ray waveform of the pulsar PSR J0030+0451, aimed to constrain the neutron star mass and radius, has inferred surface hot-spots (the magnetic polar caps) that imply significantly non-dipolar magnetic fields. To this end, we investigate magnetic field configurations that comprise offset dipole plus quadrupole components using static vacuum field and force-free global magnetosphere models. Taking into account the compactness and observer angle values provided by Miller et al. (2019) and Riley et al. (2019), we compute geodesics from the observer plane to the polar caps to compute the resulting X-ray light curve. We explore, through Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques, the detailed magnetic field configurations that can reproduce the observed X-ray light curve and have discovered degeneracies, i.e., diverse field configurations, which can provide sufficient descriptions to the NICER X-ray waveforms. Having obtained the force-free field structures, we then compute the corresponding synchronous gamma-ray light curves following Kalapotharakos et al. (2014) these we compare to those obtained by Fermi-LAT, to provide models consistent with both the X-ray and the gamma-ray data, thereby restricting further the multipole field parameters. An essential aspect of this approach is the proper computation of the relative phase between the synchronous X- and gamma-ray light curves. We search for an isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background (GWB) in the $12.5$-year pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves. Our analysis finds strong evidence of a stochastic process, modeled as a power-law, with common amplitude and spectral slope across pulsars. The Bayesian posterior of the amplitude for an $f^{-2/3}$ power-law spectrum, expressed as the characteristic GW strain, has median $1.92 \times 10^{-15}$ and $5\%$--$95\%$ quantiles of $1.37$--$2.67 \times 10^{-15}$ at a reference frequency of $f_\mathrm{yr} = 1 ~\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. The Bayes factor in favor of the common-spectrum process versus independent red-noise processes in each pulsar exceeds $10,000$. However, we find no statistically significant evidence that this process has quadrupolar spatial correlations, which we would consider necessary to claim a GWB detection consistent with general relativity. We find that the process has neither monopolar nor dipolar correlations, which may arise from, for example, reference clock or solar system ephemeris systematics, respectively. The amplitude posterior has significant support above previously reported upper limits; we explain this in terms of the Bayesian priors assumed for intrinsic pulsar red noise. Using JVLA data obtained from high-resolution observations at 5.5 GHz at multiple epochs in 2014 and 2019, we have detected a population of radio variables and transients in the radio bright zone at the Galactic center. With observations covering a sky area of 180 arcmin$^2$ at an angular resolution of 0.4 arcsec, we report new detections of 110 Galactic center compact radio (GCCR) sources with a size of $, Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepted

Intensity scintillations of radio pulsars are known to originate from interference between waves scattered by the electron density irregularities of interstellar plasma, often leading to parabolic arcs in the two-dimensional power spectrum of the recorded dynamic spectrum. The degree of arc curvature depends on the distance to the scattering plasma and its transverse velocity with respect to the line-of-sight. We report the observation of annual and orbital variations in the curvature of scintillation arcs over a period of 16 years for the bright millisecond pulsar, PSR J0437-4715. These variations are the signature of the relative transverse motions of the Earth, pulsar, and scattering medium, which we model to obtain precise measurements of parameters of the pulsar's binary orbit and the scattering medium itself. We observe two clear scintillation arcs in most of our $>$5000 observations and we show that they originate from scattering by thin screens located at distances $D_1 = 89.8 \pm 0.4$ pc and $D_2 = 124 \pm 3$ pc from Earth. The best-fit scattering model we derive for the brightest arc yields the pulsar's orbital inclination angle $i = 137.1 \pm 0.3^\circ$, and longitude of ascending node, $\Omega=206.3\pm0.4^\circ$. Using scintillation arcs for precise astrometry and orbital dynamics can be superior to modelling variations in the diffractive scintillation timescale, because the arc curvature is independent of variations in the level of turbulence of interstellar plasma. This technique can be used in combination with pulsar timing to determine the full three-dimensional orbital geometries of binary pulsars, and provides parameters essential for testing theories of gravity and constraining neutron star masses., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures. We analyze photometry and spectra of the "redback" millisecond pulsar binary J2339$-$0533. These observations include new measurements from Keck and GROND, as well as archival measurements from the OISTER, WIYN, SOAR, and HET telescopes. The parameters derived from GROND, our primary photometric data, describe well the rest of the datasets, raising our confidence in our fitted binary properties. Our fit requires hot-spots (likely magnetic poles) on the surface of the companion star, and we see evidence that these spots move over the 8 yr span of our photometry. The derived binary inclination $i = 69.3^\circ\pm 2.3^\circ$, together with the center-of-mass velocity (from the radial-velocity fits) $K_{\rm C} = 347.0\pm 3.7\,$ $\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$, give a fairly typical neutron star mass of $1.47\pm 0.09\,M_\odot$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 8 pages, 6 figures

We present a multi-frequency study of eclipse properties of a transitional redback millisecond pulsar J1227$-$4853 discovered in 2014 with the GMRT. Emission from this pulsar is eclipsed at 607 MHz for about 37% of its orbit around the superior conjunction. We observe eclipse ingress and egress transition which last 12% and 15% of its orbit respectively, resulting in only 36% of the orbit being unaffected by eclipsing material. We report an excess dispersion measure (DM) at eclipse boundaries of 0.079(3) pc cm$^{-3}$ and the corresponding electron column density (N$_e$) is 24.4(8) x 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$. Simultaneous timing and imaging studies suggests that the eclipses in J1227$-$4853 are not caused by temporal smearing due to excess dispersion and scattering but could be caused by removal of pulsar flux due to cyclotron absorption of the pulsed signal by intra-binary material constraining the companion's magnetic field. Additionally, near inferior conjunction at orbital phase 0.71 and 0.82 the pulsed emission is significantly delayed which is associated with a fading of the pulsed and continuum flux densities. At orbital phase $\sim$0.82, we measure a change in DM of 0.035(3) pc cm$^{-3}$ and N$_e$ of 10.8(8) x 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ associated with a dimming of up to $\sim$30% of the peak flux density. Such flux fading around a fixed orbital phase is not reported for other eclipsing binaries. Moreover, this event around inferior conjunction could be caused by absorption of pulsed signal by fragmented blobs of plasma generated from mass loss through the L2 Lagrangian point., 18 pages, 7 pdf figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The timing properties of the millisecond pulsar PSR J1939+2134 -- very high rotation frequency, very low time derivative of rotation frequency, no timing glitches and relatively low timing noise -- are responsible for its exceptional timing stability over decades. It has been timed by various groups since its discovery, at diverse radio frequencies, using different hardware and analysis methods. Most of this timing data is now available in the public domain in two segments, which have not been combined so far. This work analyzes the combined data by deriving uniform methods of data selection, derivation of Dispersion Measure (DM), accounting for correlation due to "red" noise, etc. The timing noise of this pulsar is very close to a sinusoid, with a period of approximately $31$ years. The main results of this work are (1) The clock of PSR J1939+2134 is stable at the level of almost one part in $10^{15}$ over about $31$ years, (2) the power law index of the spectrum of electron density fluctuations in the direction of PSR J1939+2134 is $3.86 \pm 0.04$, (3) a Moon sized planetary companion, in an orbit of semi major axis about $11$ astronomical units and eccentricity $\approx 0.2$, can explain the timing noise of PSR J1939+2134, (4) Precession under electromagnetic torque with very small values of oblateness and wobble angle can also be the explanation, but with reduced confidence, and (5) there is excess timing noise of about $8$ $\mu$s amplitude during the epochs of steepest DM gradient, of unknown cause.

PSR J0636+5128 is a millisecond pulsar in one of the most compact pulsar binaries known, with a 96\,min orbital period. The pulsar mass function suggests a very low-mass companion, similar to that seen in so-called "black widow" binaries. Unlike in most of those, however, no radio eclipses by material driven off from the companion were seen leading to the possibility that the companion was a degenerate remnant of a carbon-oxygen white dwarf. We report the discovery of the optical counterpart of its companion in images taken with the Gemini North and Keck~I telescopes. The companion varies between $r=25$ and $r=23$ on the 96\,min orbital period of the binary, caused by irradiation from the pulsar's energetic wind. We modeled the multi-color lightcurve using parallax constraints from pulsar timing and determine a companion mass of $(1.71\pm0.23)\times 10^{-2}\,M_\odot$, a radius of $(7.6\pm1.4)\times 10^{-2}\,R_\odot$, and a mean density of $54\pm26\,{\rm g\,cm}^{-3}$, all for an assumed neutron star mass of $1.4\,M_\odot$. This makes the companion to PSR J0636+5128 one of the densest of the "black widow" systems. We identified a highly-polarized, steep-spectrum radio source in a deep image with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope at 888 MHz. After considering and rejecting a stellar origin for this source, we discovered a new millisecond pulsar (MSP) using observations from the Parkes radio telescope. This pulsar has period 2.77 ms and dispersion measure 228.27 pc/cm**3. Although this pulsar does not yet appear to be particularly remarkable, the short spin period, wide profile and high dispersion measure do make it relatively hard to discover through traditional blind periodicity searches. Over the course of several weeks we see changes in the barycentric period of this pulsar that are consistent with orbital motion in a binary system, but the properties of any binary need to be confirmed by further observations. While even a deep ASKAP survey may not identify large numbers of new MSPs compared to the existing population, it would be competitive with existing all-sky surveys and could discover interesting new MSPs at high Galactic latitude without the need for computationally-expensive all-sky periodicity searches., ApJ, in press

PSR J1023+0038 is the first millisecond pulsar discovered to pulsate in the visible band; such a detection took place when the pulsar was surrounded by an accretion disk and also showed X-ray pulsations. We report on the first high time resolution observational campaign of this transitional pulsar in the disk state, using simultaneous observations in the optical (TNG, NOT, TJO), X-ray (XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, NICER), infrared (GTC) and UV (Swift) bands. Optical and X-ray pulsations were detected simultaneously in the X-ray high intensity mode in which the source spends $\sim$ 70% of the time, and both disappeared in the low mode, indicating a common underlying physical mechanism. In addition, optical and X-ray pulses were emitted within a few km, had similar pulse shape and distribution of the pulsed flux density compatible with a power-law relation $F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-0.7}$ connecting the optical and the 0.3-45 keV X-ray band. Optical pulses were detected also during flares with a pulsed flux reduced by one third with respect to the high mode; the lack of a simultaneous detection of X-ray pulses is compatible with the lower photon statistics. We show that magnetically channeled accretion of plasma onto the surface of the neutron star cannot account for the optical pulsed luminosity ($\sim 10^{31}$ erg/s). On the other hand, magnetospheric rotation-powered pulsar emission would require an extremely efficient conversion of spin-down power into pulsed optical and X-ray emission. We then propose that optical and X-ray pulses are instead produced by synchrotron emission from the intrabinary shock that forms where a striped pulsar wind meets the accretion disk, within a few light cylinder radii away, $\sim$ 100 km, from the pulsar., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures, first submitted to ApJ on 2019, January 18

We report the discovery of soft X-ray pulsations from the nearby millisecond pulsar PSR J1231$-$1411 using NICER. The pulsed emission is characterized by a broad and asymmetric main pulse and a much fainter secondary interpulse, with a total pulsed count rate of 0.055 c s$^{-1}$ in the 0.35-1.5 keV band. We analyzed Fermi LAT data to update the pulse timing model covering 10 years of data and used that model to coherently combine NICER data over a year of observations. Spectral modeling suggests that the flux is dominated by thermal emission from a hot spot (or spots) on the neutron star surface. The phase relationship between the X-ray pulse and the radio and $\gamma$ rays provides insight into the geometry of the system., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

Over a hundred millisecond radio pulsars (MSPs) have been observed in globular clusters (GCs), motivating theoretical studies of the formation and evolution of these sources through stellar evolution coupled to stellar dynamics. Here we study MSPs in GCs using realistic $N$-body simulations with our Cluster Monte Carlo code. We show that neutron stars (NSs) formed in electron-capture supernovae (including both accretion-induced and merger-induced collapse of white dwarfs) can be spun up through mass transfer to form MSPs. Both NS formation and spin-up through accretion are greatly enhanced through dynamical interaction processes. We find that our models for average GCs at the present day with masses $\approx 2 \times 10^5\,M_\odot$ can produce up to $10-20$ MSPs, while a very massive GC model with mass $\approx 10^6\,M_\odot$ can produce close to $100$. We show that the number of MSPs is anti-correlated with the total number of stellar-mass black holes (BHs) retained in the host cluster. The radial distributions are also affected: MSPs are more concentrated towards the center in a host cluster with a smaller number of retained BHs. As a result, the number of MSPs in a GC could be used to place constraints on its BH population. Some intrinsic properties of MSP systems in our models (such as the magnetic fields and spin periods) are in good overall agreement with observations, while others (such as the distribution of binary companion types) less so, and we discuss the possible reasons for such discrepancies. We present a study of unusually bright single pulses (BSPs) from a millisecond pulsar in an ablating binary system, B1744−24A, based on several multiorbit observations with the Green Bank Telescope. These pulses come predominantly in time near eclipse ingress and egress, have intensities up to 40 times the average pulse intensity, and pulse widths similar to that of the average pulse profile. The average intensity, spectral index of radio emission, and the dispersion measure do not vary in connection with BSP outbursts. The average profile obtained from BSPs has the same shape as the average profile from all pulses. These properties make it difficult to explain BSPs via scintillation in the interstellar medium, as a separate emission mode, or as conventional giant pulses. BSPs from B1744−24A have similar properties to the strong pulses observed from the Black Widow binary pulsar B1957+10, which were recently attributed to strong lensing by the intrabinary material. We argue that the strong lensing likely occurs in B1744−24A as well. For this system, the sizes and locations of the lenses are not well constrained by simple 1D lensing models from Cordes et al. and Main et al. This partly stems from the poor knowledge of several important physical parameters of the system.

We consider acceleration of leptons up to GeV-TeV energies in the bow shock wind nebula of PSR J0437-4715 and their subsequent diffusion through the interstellar magnetic fields. The leptons accelerated at the pulsar wind termination surface are injected into re-acceleration in colliding shock flows. Modelled spectra of synchrotron emission from the accelerated electrons and positrons are consistent with the far-ultraviolet and X-ray observations of the nebula carried out with the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory. These observations are employed to constrain the absolute fluxes of relativistic leptons, which are escaping from the nebula and eventually reaching the Solar System after energy-dependent diffusion through the local interstellar medium accompanied by synchrotron and Compton losses. It is shown that accelerated leptons from the nebula of PSR J0437-4715 can be responsible both for the enhancement of the positron fraction above a few GeV detected by PAMELA and AMS-02 spectrometers and for the TeV range lepton fluxes observed with H.E.S.S., VERITAS, Fermi, CALET, and DAMPE., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, Astrophysical Journal Letters, in print

In this Letter we propose that coherent radio emission of Crab, other young energetic pulsars, and millisecond pulsars is produced in the magnetospheric current sheet beyond the light cylinder. We carry out global and local two-dimensional kinetic plasma simulations of reconnection to illustrate the coherent emission mechanism. Reconnection in the current sheet beyond the light cylinder proceeds in the very efficient plasmoid-dominated regime, and current layer gets fragmented into a dynamic chain of plasmoids which undergo successive coalescence. Mergers of sufficiently large plasmoids produce secondary perpendicular current sheets, which are also plasmoid-unstable. Collisions of plasmoids with each other and with the upstream magnetic field eject fast-magnetosonic waves, which propagate upstream across the background field and successfully escape from the plasma as electromagnetic waves that fall in the radio band. This model successfully explains many important features of the observed radio emission from Crab and other pulsars with high magnetic field at the light cylinder: phase coincidence with the high-energy emission, nano-second duration (nanoshots), and extreme instantaneous brightness of individual pulses., 7 pages, 4 figures

PSR J1306--40 is a millisecond pulsar binary with a non-degenerate companion in an unusually long $\sim$1.097 day orbit. We present new optical photometry and spectroscopy of this system, and model these data to constrain fundamental properties of the binary such as the component masses and distance. The optical data imply a minimum neutron star mass of $1.75\pm0.09\,M_{\odot}$ (1-sigma) and a high, nearly edge-on inclination. The light curves suggest a large hot spot on the companion, suggestive of a portion of the pulsar wind being channeled to the stellar surface by the magnetic field of the secondary, mediated via an intrabinary shock. The H$\alpha$ line profiles switch rapidly from emission to absorption near companion inferior conjunction, consistent with an eclipse of the compact emission region at these phases. At our optically-inferred distance of $4.7\pm0.5$ kpc, the X-ray luminosity is $\sim$10$^{33}$ erg s$^{\textrm{-1}}$, brighter than nearly all known redbacks in the pulsar state. IGR J17591-2342 is an accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar discovered in 2018 August in scans of the Galactic bulge and center by the INTEGRAL X-ray and gamma-ray observatory. It exhibited an unusual outburst profile with multiple peaks in the X-ray, as observed by several X-ray satellites over three months. Here we present observations of this source performed in the X-ray/gamma-ray and near infrared domains, and focus on a simultaneous observation performed with the Chandra-High Energy Transmission Gratings Spectrometer (HETGS) and the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). HETGS provides high resolution spectra of the Si-edge region, which yield clues as to the source's distance and reveal evidence (at 99.999% significance) of an outflow with a velocity of $\mathrm{2\,800\,km\,s^{-1}}$. We demonstrate good agreement between the NICER and HETGS continua, provided that one properly accounts for the differing manners in which these instruments view the dust scattering halo in the source's foreground. Unusually, we find a possible set of Ca lines in the HETGS spectra (with significances ranging from 97.0% to 99.7%). We hypothesize that IGR J17591-2342 is a neutron star low mass X-ray binary at a distance of the Galactic bulge or beyond that may have formed from the collapse of a white dwarf system in a rare, calcium rich Type Ib supernova explosion., To be published in the Astrophysical Journal

We present integrated pulse profiles at 5~GHz for 71 pulsars, including eight millisecond pulsars (MSPs), obtained using the Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope (TMRT). Mean flux densities and pulse widths are measured. For 19 normal pulsars and one MSP, these are the first detections at 5~GHz and for a further 19, including five MPSs, the profiles have a better signal-to-noise ratio than previous observations. Mean flux density spectra between 400~MHz and 9~GHz are presented for 27 pulsars and correlations of power-law spectral index are found with characteristic age, radio pseudo-luminosity and spin-down luminosity. Mode changing was detected in five pulsars. The separation between the main pulse and interpulse is shown to be frequency independent for six pulsars but a frequency dependence of the relative intensity of the main pulse and interpulse is found. The frequency dependence of component separations is investigated for 20 pulsars and three groups are found: in seven cases the separation between the outmost leading and trailing components decreases with frequency, roughly in agreement with radius-to-frequency mapping; in eleven cases the separation is nearly constant; in the remain two cases the separation between the outmost components increases with frequency. We obtain the correlations of pulse widths with pulsar period and estimate the core widths of 23 multi-component profiles and conal widths of 17 multi-component profiles at 5.0~GHz using Gaussian fitting and discuss the width-period relationship at 5~GHz compared with the results at at 1.0~GHz and 8.6~GHz.

We present the first optical spectroscopy of five confirmed (or strong candidate) redback millisecond pulsar binaries, obtaining complete radial velocity curves for each companion star. The properties of these millisecond pulsar binaries with low-mass, hydrogen-rich companions are discussed in the context of the 14 confirmed and 10 candidate field redbacks. We find that the neutron stars in redbacks have a median mass of 1.78 +/- 0.09 M_sun with a dispersion of sigma = 0.21 +/- 0.09. Neutron stars with masses in excess of 2 M_sun are consistent with, but not firmly demanded by, current observations. Redback companions have median masses of 0.36 +/- 0.04 M_sun with a scatter of sigma = 0.15 +/- 0.04, and a tail possibly extending up to 0.7-0.9 M_sun. Candidate redbacks tend to have higher companion masses than confirmed redbacks, suggesting a possible selection bias against the detection of radio pulsations in these more massive candidate systems. The distribution of companion masses between redbacks and the less massive black widows continues to be strongly bimodal, which is an important constraint on evolutionary models for these systems. We report the discovery of an eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary at the center of the 3FGL error ellipse of the unassociated Fermi/Large Area Telescope gamma-ray source 3FGL J0427.9-6704. Photometry from OGLE and the SMARTS 1.3-m telescope and spectroscopy from the SOAR telescope have allowed us to classify the system as an eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary (P = 8.8 hr) with a main sequence donor and a neutron star accretor. Broad double-peaked H and He emission lines suggest the ongoing presence of an accretion disk. Remarkably, the system shows shows separate sets of absorption lines associated with the accretion disk and the secondary, and we use their radial velocities to find evidence for a massive (~ 1.8-1.9 M_sun) neutron star primary. In addition to a total X-ray eclipse of duration ~ 2200 s observed with NuSTAR, the X-ray light curve also shows properties similar to those observed among known transitional millisecond pulsars: short-term variability, a hard power-law spectrum (photon index ~ 1.7), and a comparable 0.5-10 keV luminosity (~ 2.4 x 10^33 erg/s). We find tentative evidence for a partial (~ 60%) gamma-ray eclipse at the same phase as the X-ray eclipse, suggesting the gamma-ray emission may not be confined to the immediate region of the compact object. The favorable inclination of this binary is promising for future efforts to determine the origin of gamma-rays among accreting neutron stars., Comment: ApJ in press

Decade-long timing observations of arrays of millisecond pulsars have placed highly constraining upper limits on the amplitude of the nanohertz gravitational-wave stochastic signal from the mergers of supermassive black-hole binaries ($\sim 10^{-15}$ strain at $f = 1/\mathrm{yr}$). These limits suggest that binary merger rates have been overestimated, or that environmental influences from nuclear gas or stars accelerate orbital decay, reducing the gravitational-wave signal at the lowest, most sensitive frequencies. This prompts the question whether nanohertz gravitational waves are likely to be detected in the near future. In this letter, we answer this question quantitatively using simple statistical estimates, deriving the range of true signal amplitudes that are compatible with current upper limits, and computing expected detection probabilities as a function of observation time. We conclude that small arrays consisting of the pulsars with the least timing noise, which yield the tightest upper limits, have discouraging prospects of making a detection in the next two decades. By contrast, we find large arrays are crucial to detection because the quadrupolar spatial correlations induced by gravitational waves can be well sampled by many pulsar pairs. Indeed, timing programs which monitor a large and expanding set of pulsars have an $\sim 80\%$ probability of detecting gravitational waves within the next ten years, under assumptions on merger rates and environmental influences ranging from optimistic to conservative. Even in the extreme case where $90\%$ of binaries stall before merger and environmental coupling effects diminish low-frequency gravitational-wave power, detection is delayed by at most a few years., 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Access to 50 years of data has led to the discovery of pulsar emission and rotation variability on timescales of months and years. Most of this long-term variability has been seen in long-period pulsars, with relatively little focus on recycled millisecond pulsars. We have analyzed a 38-pulsar sub-set of the 45 millisecond pulsars in the NANOGrav 11-year data set, in order to review their pulse profile stability. The most variability, on any timescale, is seen in PSRs J1713+0747, B1937+21 and J2145-0750. The strongest evidence for long-timescale pulse profile changes is seen in PSRs B1937+21 and J1643-1224. We have focused our analyses on these four pulsars in an attempt to elucidate the causes of their profile variability. Effects of scintillation seem to be responsible for the profile modifications of PSR J2145-0750. We see evidence that imperfect polarization calibration contributes to the profile variability of PSRs J1713+0747 and B1937+21, along with radio frequency interference around 2 GHz, but find that propagation effects also have an influence. The changes seen in PSR J1643-1224 have been reported previously, yet elude explanation beyond their astrophysical nature. Regardless of cause, unmodeled pulse profile changes are detrimental to the accuracy of pulsar timing and must be incorporated into the timing models where possible., Comment: 38 pages, 25 figures

Current single dish, low-frequency radio pulsar surveys provide efficient sky coverage, but poor localization of new discoveries. Here, we describe a practical technique for rapidly localizing pulsars discovered in these surveys with on-the-fly mapping and provide code to facilitate and formalize its implementation. As a proof of concept, we alter the positions of four test sources and use the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) 350 MHz receiver to recover source positions within $\approx$1$-$3' of their true values, compared to an 18' error radius for new discoveries. Achieving similar precision with a traditional gridding strategy using the GBT requires 2$-$3 times as much telescope time (including overhead), multiple receivers and relies on assumptions about the pulsars' spectral indices. For one of our test sources (PSR J1400$-$1431), this method revealed a discrepancy with the initial, published position, prompting additional follow-up and an improved timing solution. Earth-mass dark matter microhalos with size of ~100 AUs are the first structures formed in the universe, if the dark matter of the Universe are made of neutralino. Here, we report the results of ultra-high-resolution simulations of the formation and evolution of these microhalos. We found that microhalos have the central density cusps of the form $\rho \propto r^{-1.5}$, much steeper than the cusps of larger dark halos. The central regions of these microhalos survive the encounters with stars except in very inner region of the galaxy down to the radius of a few hundreds pcs from the galactic center. The annihilation signals from nearest microhalos are observed as gamma-ray point-sources (radius less than 1'), with unusually large proper motions of ~0.2 degree per year. Their surface brightnesses are ~10% of that of the galactic center. Their S/N ratios might be better if they are far from the galactic plane. Luminosities of subhalos are determined only by their mass, and they are more than one order of magnitude luminous than the estimation by Springel et al. (2008): A boost factor can be larger than 1000. We present the results of a population synthesis of radio and gamma-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from the Galactic Disk (GD). Using 92 radio millisecond pulsars detected in 13 radio surveys and 54 Fermi MSPs detected as point sources in the first point source catalog, we establish six free parameters corresponding to the overall factor and the exponents of the period and period derivative dependence for each of the radio and gamma-ray empirical luminosity models. We test three high-energy emission models described by the two pole caustic Slot Gap, Outer Gap, and Pair Starved Polar Cap geometries. The simulated distributions of pulsar properties adequately describe the distributions of detected MSPs from the GD. We explore the gamma-ray emission from groups of MSPs in globular clusters and in the Galactic Bulge. The simulation predicts reasonable numbers of Fermi MSPs detected in the other point source catalogs and anticipates a bright future for Fermi observations of MSPs, expecting a total of ~ 170 MSP detections from the GD within ten years. Our numbers of simulated MSPs in globular clusters are in agreement with those derived from Fermi detections. Neutron stars spin down over time due to a number of energy-loss processes. We provide tantalizing population-based evidence that millisecond pulsars (MSPs) have a minimum ellipticity of $\epsilon\approx10^{-9}$ around their spin axis and that, consequently, some spin down mostly through gravitational-wave emission. We discuss the implications of such a minimum ellipticity in terms of the internal magnetic field strengths and nuclear matter composition of neutron stars and show it would result in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detectors, or their upgrades, detecting gravitational waves from some known MSPs in the near future., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, published in Ap. We investigate the radio and gamma-ray beaming properties of normal and millisecond pulsars by selecting two samples from the known populations. The first, Sample G, contains pulsars which are detectable in blind searches of gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. The second, Sample R, contains pulsars detectable in blind radio searches which have spin-down luminosities Edot > 10^{34} erg/s. We analyse the fraction of the gamma-ray-selected Sample G which have detectable radio pulses and the fraction of the radio-selected Sample R which have detectable gamma-ray pulses. Twenty of our 35 Sample G pulsars have already observed radio pulses. This rules out low-altitude polar-cap beaming models if, as is currently believed, gamma-ray beams are generated in the outer magnetosphere and are very wide. We further find that, for the highest-Edot pulsars, the radio and gamma-ray beams have comparable beaming factors, i.e., the beams cover similar regions of the sky as the star rotates. For lower-Edot gamma-ray emitting pulsars, the radio beams have about half of the gamma-ray sky coverage. These results suggest that, for high-Edot young and millisecond pulsars, the radio emission originates in wide beams from regions high in the pulsar magnetosphere, probably close to the null-charge surface and to the gamma-ray emitting regions. Furthermore, it suggests that for these high-Edot pulsars, as in the gamma-ray case, features in the radio profile represent caustics in the emission beam pattern.

In the absence of constraints from the binary companion or supernova remnant, the standard method for estimating pulsar ages is to infer an age from the rate of spin-down. While the generic spin-down age may give realistic estimates for normal pulsars, it can fail for pulsars with very short periods. Details of the spin-up process during the low mass X-ray binary phase pose additional constraints on the period (P) and spin-down rates (Pdot) that may consequently affect the age estimate. Here, we propose a new recipe to estimate millisecond pulsar (MSP) ages that parametrically incorporates constraints arising from binary evolution and limiting physics. We show that the standard method can be improved by this approach to achieve age estimates closer to the true age whilst the standard spin-down age may over- or under-estimate the age of the pulsar by more than a factor of ~10 in the millisecond regime. We use this approach to analyze the population on a broader scale. For instance, in order to understand the dominant energy loss mechanism after the onset of radio emission, we test for a range of plausible braking indices. We find that a braking index of n=3 is consistent with the observed MSP population. We demonstrate the existence and quantify the potential contributions of two main sources of age corruption: the previously known "age bias" due to secular acceleration and "age contamination" driven by sub-Eddington progenitor accretion rates. We explicitly show that descendants of LMXBs that have accreted at very low rates will exhibit ages that appear older than the age of the Galaxy. Previous optical and radio observations of the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1640+2224 have come to inconsistent conclusions about the identity of its companion, with some observations suggesting the companion is a low-mass helium-core (He-core) white dwarf (WD), while others indicate it is most likely a high-mass carbon-oxygen (CO) WD. Binary evolution models predict PSR J1640+2224 most likely formed in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) based on the pulsar's short spin period and long-period, low-eccentricity orbit, in which case its companion should be a He-core WD with mass about $0.35 - 0.39 \, M_\odot$, depending on metallicity. If it is instead a CO WD, that would suggest the system has an unusual formation history. In this paper we present the first astrometric parallax measurement for this system from observations made with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), from which we determine the distance to be $1520^{+170}_{-150}\,\mathrm{pc}$. We use this distance and a reanalysis of archival optical observations originally taken in 1995 with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in order to measure the WD's mass. We also incorporate improvements in calibration, extinction model, and WD cooling models. We find that the existing observations are not sufficient to tightly constrain the companion mass, but we conclude the WD mass is $>0.4\,M_\odot$ with $>90\%$ confidence. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) source J102347.6+003841 was recently revealed to be a binary 1.69 millisecond radio pulsar with a 4.75 hr orbital period and a ~0.2 M_sun companion. Here we analyze the SDSS spectrum of the source in detail. The spectrum was taken on 2001 February 1, when the source was in a bright state and showed broad, double-peaked hydrogen and helium lines -- dramatically different from the G-type absorption spectrum seen from 2003 onward. The lines are consistent with emission from a disk around the compact primary. We derive properties of the disk by fitting the SDSS continuum with a simple disk model, and find a temperature range of 2000--34000 K from the outer to inner edge of the disk. The disk inner and outer radii were approximately 10^9 and 5.7x10^10 cm, respectively. These results further emphasize the unique feature of the source: it is likely a system at the end of its transition from an X-ray binary to a recycled radio pulsar. The disk mass is estimated to have been ~10^23 g, most of which would have been lost due to pulsar wind ablation (or due to the propeller effect if the disk had extended inside the light cylinder of the pulsar) before the final disk disruption event. The system could undergo repeated episodes of disk formation. Close monitoring of the source is needed to catch the system in its bright state again, so that this unusual example of a pulsar-disk interaction can be studied in much finer detail, Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. The existence of a shallow decay phase in the early X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts is a common feature. Here we investigate the possibility that this is connected to the formation of a highly magnetized millisecond pulsar, pumping energy into the fireball on timescales longer than the prompt emission. In this scenario, the nascent neutron star could undergo a secular bar-mode instability, leading to gravitational wave losses which would affect the neutron star spin-down. In this case, nearby gamma-ray bursts with isotropic energies of the order of 1050 ergs would produce a detectable gravitational wave signal emitted in association with an observed X-ray light-curve plateau, over relatively long timescales of minutes to about an hour. The peak amplitude of the gravitational wave signal would be delayed with respect to the gamma-ray burst trigger, offering gravitational wave interferometers such as the advanced LIGO and Virgo the challenging possibility of catching its signature on the fly.

We report on polarimetric observations of 100 pulsars centered on 774 MHz, made using the Green Bank Telescope, presenting their polarization profiles and polarized flux densities and comparing them with previous observations when possible. For 67 pulsars, these are the first such measurements made. Polarization profiles of 8 millisecond pulsars in our sample show wide profiles and flat position-angle curves. Strong linear polarization, sometimes approaching 100% of the total intensity, has been detected in all or a part of the average pulse profiles of some pulsars. In general, circular polarization is very weak, although it is observed to be extremely strong in the leading component of PSR J1920+2650. Sense reversal of circular polarization as a function of pulse phase has been detected from both core and other components of more than 20 pulsars. Any relationship between the spin-down luminosity and the percentage of linear polarization is not evident in our data at this frequency., 16 pages. During the September-October 2008 outburst of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, the source was observed by both Suzaku and XMM-Newton approximately 1 day apart. Spectral analysis reveals a broad relativistic Fe K-alpha emission line which is present in both data-sets, as has recently been reported for other neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. The properties of the Fe K line observed during each observation are very similar. From modeling the Fe line, we determine the inner accretion disk radius to be 13.2 +/- 2.5 GM/c^2. The inner disk radius measured from the Fe K line suggests that the accretion disk is not very receded in the island state. If the inner disk (as measured by the Fe line) is truncated at the magnetospheric radius this implies a magnetic field strength of ~3E8 G at the magnetic poles, consistent with other independent estimates., 5 pages, 3 figs, 2 tables, accepted to ApJL

The discovery of the eccentric binary and millisecond pulsar PSR J1903+03273 has raised interesting questions about the formation mechanisms of this peculiar system. Here we present a born-fast scenario for PSR J1903+03273. We assume that during the supernova (SN) explosion that produced the pulsar, a fallback disk was formed around and accreted onto the newborn neutron star. Mass accretion could accelerate the neutron star's spin to milliseconds, and decrease its magnetic field to $\sim 10^8-10^9$ G, provided that there was sufficient mass ($\sim 0.1 M_{\sun}$) in the fallback disk. The neutron star became a millisecond pulsar after mass accretion terminated. In the meanwhile the binary orbit has kept to be eccentric (due to the SN explosion) for $\sim 10^{9}$ yr. We have performed population synthesis calculations of the evolutions of neutron stars with a fallback disk, and found that there might be tens to hundreds of PSR J1903+03273-like systems in the Galaxy.
