Search

For the first time, we present the simultaneous detection and characterization of three distinct phases at $>10^5$ K in $z=0$ absorption, using deep $\it{Chandra}$ observations toward Mrk 421. The extraordinarily high signal-to-noise ratio ($\geqslant60$) of the spectra has allowed us to detect a $\it{hot}$ phase of the Milky Way circumgalactic medium (CGM) at 3.2$^{+1.5}_{-0.5}\times$ 10$^7$ K, coexisting with a $\textit{warm-hot}$ phase at 1.5$\pm$0.1$\times$10$^6$ K and a $\textit{warm}$ phase at 3.0$\pm$0.4$\times$10$^5$ K. The $\textit{warm-hot}$ phase is at the virial temperature of the Galaxy, and the $\textit{warm}$ phase may have cooled from the $\textit{warm-hot}$ phase, but the super-virial $\textit{hot}$ phase remains a mystery. We find that [C/O] in the $\textit{warm}$ and $\textit{warm-hot}$ phases, [Mg/O] in the $\textit{warm-hot}$ phase and [Ne/O] in the $\textit{hot}$ phase are super-solar, and the $\textit{hot}$ and the $\textit{warm-hot}$ phases are $��-$enhanced. Non-thermal line broadening is evident in the $\textit{warm-hot}$ and the $\textit{hot}$ phases and it dominates the total line broadening. Our results indicate that the $>10^5$ K CGM is a complex ecosystem. We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. We suggest that the obscurer is a disk wind triggered by the brightening of NGC 5548 following the decrease in size of the broad-line region during the preceding low-luminosity state., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures, uses aastex62.cls. We analyzed Suzaku and Chandra observations of the soft diffuse X-ray background toward four sightlines with the goal of characterizing the X-ray emission from the Milky Way circumgalactic medium (CGM). We identified two thermal components of the CGM, one at a uniform temperature of $\rm kT = 0.176\pm0.008 ~keV$ and the other at temperatures ranging between $\rm kT = 0.65-0.90~ keV$. The uniform lower temperature component is consistent with the Galaxy's virial temperature ($ \sim10^{6}~ K$). The temperatures of the hotter components are similar to that recently discovered ($\rm \sim 10^{7}~ K$; Das et al.) in the sightline to blazar 1ES1553+113, passing close to the Fermi bubble. Alternatively, the spectra can be described by just one lower-temperature component with super-solar Neon abundance, once again similar to that found in the 1ES1553+113 sightline. The additional hot component or the overabundance of Ne is required at a significance of $>4\sigma$, but we cannot distinguish between the two possibilities. These results show that the super-virial temperature gas or an enhanced Ne abundance in the warm-hot gas in the CGM is widespread, and these are not necessarily related to the Fermi bubble., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ

We present a deep XMM-Newton observation of the Galactic halo emission in the direction of the blazar 1ES 1553+113. In order to extract the Galactic halo component from the diffuse soft X-ray emission spectrum, accurately modeling the foreground components is crucial. Here we present complex modeling of the foregrounds with unprecedented details. A careful analysis of the spectrum yields two temperature components of the halo gas (T$^{em}_1$= 10$^{6.25-6.42}$K, T$^{em}_2$= 10$^{6.68-6.92}$K). We find that these temperatures obtained from the emission spectrum are not consistent with those from the absorption spectrum (T$^{ab}_1$= 10$^{6.07-6.13}$K, T$^{ab}_2$= 10$^{6.96-7.15}$K), unlike the previous studies that found only one temperature component of the Milky Way circumgalactic medium. This provides us with interesting insights into the nature of emitting and absorbing systems. We discuss several possibilities objectively, and conclude that most likely we are observing multiple (3 to 4) discrete temperatures between 10$^{5.5}$K and $\geqslant$10$^7$K in the Milky Way circumgalactic medium., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, published in ApJ

We present XMM-Newton observations of the broad absorption line (BAL) quasar FBQS J131213.5+231958. The X-ray spectrum of the source can be well described by an absorbed power-law model in which the absorber is either ionized or only partially covers the continuum source. This can explain the apparent lack of absorption observed in the Chandra spectrum with low signal-to-noise ratio. While the power-law slope of the spectrum is similar to that of non-BAL radio-loud quasars, the Eddington luminosity ratio is likely to be significantly higher than the mean. This shows that in high-mass black holes (BHs), high Eddington accretion may not result in as steep of a spectrum as in lower-mass BHs. This provides important constraints for accretion disk models. It also provides support to the idea that BAL quasars, at least their radio-loud subclass, represent an early evolutionary stage of quasars.

We present a new method for probing the physical conditions and metal enrichment of the Intergalactic Medium: the composite spectrum of Ly-alpha forest absorbers. We apply this technique to a sample of 9480 Ly-alpha absorbers with redshift 2 = 10, T = 10^4 - 10^4.5 K, and [Fe/H]= -2 yields reasonable agreement with the line strengths of high-ionization species, but it underpredicts the low-ionization species by two orders of magnitude or more. This discrepancy suggests that the low ionization lines arise in dense, cool, metal-rich clumps, present in some absorption systems.

We present 7 sequential weekly observations of NGC 5548 conducted in 2007 with the \textit{Suzaku} X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) in the 0.2-12 keV band and Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) in 10-600 keV band. The iron K$\alpha$ line is well detected in all seven observations and K$\beta$ line is also detected in four observations. In this paper, we investigate the origin of the Fe K lines using both the width of the line and the reverberation mapping method. With the co-added XIS and HXD spectra, we identify Fe K$\alpha$ and K$\beta$ line at 6.396$_{-0.007}^{+0.009}$ keV and 7.08$_{-0.05}^{+0.05}$ keV, respectively. The width of line obtained from the co-added spectra is 38$_{-18}^{+16}$ eV ($\textrm{FWHM}=4200_{-2000}^{+1800}$ km/s) which corresponds to a radius of 20$_{-10}^{+50}$ light days, for the virial production of $1.220\times10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ in NCG 5548. To quantitatively investigate the origin of the narrow Fe line by the reverberation mapping method, we compare the observed light curves of Fe K$\alpha$ line with the predicted ones, which are obtained by convolving the continuum light curve with the transfer functions in a thin shell and an inclined disk. The best-fit result is given by the disk case with $i=30^\circ$ which is better than a fit to a constant flux of the Fe K line at the 92.7% level (F-test). We find that the emitting radius obtained from the light curve is 25-37 light days, which is consistent with the radius derived from the Fe K line width. Combining the results of the line width and variation, the most likely site for the origin of the narrow iron lines is 20-40 light days away from the central engine, though other possibilities are not completely ruled out. We study the UV properties of Type I active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey that have been selected to show unusually soft X-ray continua. We examine a sample of 54 Seyfert 1 galaxies with detections in both Near-UV and Far-UV bands of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite. Our sample is systematically fainter in the UV than galaxies studied in similar work by previous authors. We look for correlations between their UV and X-ray properties as well as correlations of these properties with either black hole mass or Eddington ratio. The shape of the big blue bump (BBB) in the GALEX regime does not appear to correlate with its strength relative to the power-law continuum, which conflicts with results reported by previous authors. The strength of the BBB is correlated with the shape of the X-ray continuum, in agreement with previous work, but the slope of the correlation is different than previously reported. The properties of the accretion disks of Type I AGN in the GALEX regime are relatively independent of black hole mass and Eddington ratio. We compare our measurements to the predictions of alternative theories for the origin of the soft excess, but we are unable to distinguish between Comptonization of BBB photons by a hot plasma and absorption in relativistic winds as the most likely origins for the soft X-ray excess.

We present near-infrared spectra of ten luminous, intermediate redshift quasars observed with SofI at the NTT of ESO/La Silla. With these rest-frame optical spectra we probe the Hb -[OIII] emission line region. Using the standard scaling relation involving the width of the Hb line and the continuum luminosity, we measure black hole masses in the range of ~2x10^9 to 10^10 Msol. We also used SDSS spectra to probe MgII2798 and CIV1549 emission lines and used these for black hole mass measurements as well. The massive black holes we observe could not have grown by simple radiatively efficient accretion at the observed accretion rate starting from seeds of up to thousand solar masses. About 10% of the observed black hole mass must have been accumulated by earlier merger events and radiatively inefficient accretion. Radiatively efficient accretion would further grow these BHs to masses of several 10^9 Msol in 2 to 3 e-folding times i.e. in several 10^8yrs. The Hb-based Eddington luminosity ratios are in the range of ~0.2 to ~0.7, with an average of (Lbol/Ledd) = 0.39+-0.05. The Lbol/Ledd ratio distribution follows a log-normal distribution which is consistent with prior studies of quasars with comparable luminosity. The Lbol/Ledd ratio distribution of less luminous quasars tend to be shifted to lower Eddington ratios. We also find that the gas metallicity of the broad-line region is ~3Z/Zsol, using NIII]/OIII] and NV/CIV emission line ratios. We present an analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 985. The EPIC spectra present strong residuals to a single power-law model, indicating the presence of ionized absorbing gas and a soft excess. A broad-band fit to the EPIC and RGS spectra shows that the continuum can be well fit with a power-law and a blackbody component. The RGS can be modeled either with two or three absorption components. In the two absorber model the low-ionization one, accounts for the presence of the Fe M-shell unresolved transition array (Fe VII-XIII), and the high ionization component is required by the presence of several Fe L-shell transitions. The data suggest the presence of a third ionized component with higher ionization, so that the Fe L-shell absorption features are produced by two different components (one producing absorption by Fe XVII-XX, and the other absorption by Fe XX-XXII). However, the presence of the third absorbing component cannot be detected by means of an isolated absorption line in a significant way, so we consider this detection only as tentative. Interestingly, all ionization components have similar kinematics. In addition, whether two or three absorbers are considered, the components appear to be in pressure balance. These results give further support to the idea that warm absorbers in AGN consist of a two or three-phase medium. We note that, while in the model with only two absorbers one of them (the high ionization component) lies on an unstable branch of the thermal equilibrium curve, in the model with three absorbers all of the components lie on stable branches of the curve. We are conducting a search for supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses below 10^7 M_sun by looking for signs of extremely low-level nuclear activity in nearby galaxies that are not known to be AGNs. Our survey has the following characteristics: (a) X-ray selection using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, since x-rays are a ubiquitous feature of AGNs; (b) Emphasis on late-type spiral and dwarf galaxies, as the galaxies most likely to have low-mass SMBHs; (c) Use of multiwavelength data to verify the source is an AGN; and (d) Use of the highest angular resolution available for observations in x-rays and other bands, to separate nuclear from off-nuclear sources and to minimize contamination by host galaxy light. Here we show the feasibility of this technique to find AGNs by applying it to six nearby, face-on spiral galaxies (NGC 3169, NGC 3184, NGC 4102, NGC 4647, NGC 4713, NGC 5457) for which data already exist in the Chandra archive. All six show nuclear x-ray sources. The data as they exist at present are ambiguous regarding the nature of the nuclear x-ray sources in NGC 4713 and NGC 4647. We conclude, in accord with previous studies, that NGC 3169 and NGC 4102 are almost certainly AGNs. Most interestingly, a strong argument can be made that NGC 3184 and NGC 5457, both of type Scd, host AGNs., 37 pages, 10 figures, ApJ, in press. Replaced with accepted version

We present analysis and photoionization modeling of the Chandra high resolution spectrum of Mrk 279. There is clear evidence of an absorbing outflow which is best fit by a two component model, one with a low ionization parameter and one with a higher ionization parameter. The column density of the X-ray warm absorber, about log N_H=20, is the smallest known of all AGNs in which X-ray absorbing outflows are observed. We find that the X-ray and UV/FUV absorbers are part of the same overall outflow. There is some evidence of super-solar carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and iron in the Chandra spectrum of Mrk 279. While this is not a robust result in itself, Chandra data in combination with the UV data and the pressure equilibrium between two phases of the outflow, support the scenario of super-solar abundances. This the first case where super-solar abundances are reported in the nucleus of a normal Seyfert galaxy. The data suggest that the outflow originates from a compact region around the nuclear black hole and that it carries insignificant amount of mass and energy., 19 pages, 5 figures. The X-ray bright z=0.116 quasar PKS 2155-304 is frequently observed as a Chandra calibration source, with a total of 483 ksec of Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) exposure time accumulated through May 2006. Highly-ionized metal absorption lines, including numerous lines at z=0 and a putative OVIII K-alpha line at z=0.055, have been reported in past Chandra studies of this source. Using all available Chandra LETG spectra and analysis techniques developed for such z=0 X-ray absorption along other sightlines, we revisit these previous detections. We detect 4 absorption lines at >3\sigma significance (OVII K-alpha/beta, OVIII K-alpha, and NeIX K-alpha), with OVII K-alpha being a 7.3\sigma detection. The 1\sigma ranges of z=0 OVII column density and Doppler parameter are consistent with those derived for Mrk 421 and within 2\sigma of the Mrk 279 absorption. Temperatures and densities inferred from the relative OVII and other ionic column densities are found to be consistent with either the local warm-hot intergalactic medium or a Galactic corona. Unlike the local X-ray absorbers seen in other sightlines, a link with the low- or high-velocity far-ultraviolet OVI absorption lines cannot be ruled out. The z=0.055 OVIII absorption reported by Fang et al. is seen with 3.5\sigma confidence in the ACIS/LETG spectrum, but no other absorption lines are found at the same redshift., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures; minor changes, accepted to ApJ

Using the results of recent optical surveys we conclude that the {\it non}-detection of quasars down to faint magnitudes implies a significant flattening of the high redshift (z~6) optical active galactic nuclei (AGN) luminosity function for M_{1450}>-24.7. We find that all the data are consistent with a faint-end slope for the optical AGN luminosity function of \beta=-2.2 and \beta=-2.8, at the 90% and 99% confidence level respectively, flatter than the bright-end slope of \beta'~ -3.2. We also show that X-ray deep surveys have probed even fainter magnitudes than the optical ones yielding more significant constraints on the shallow faint-end slope of the optical luminosity function. The inclusion of Type II AGN candidates, detected in the Chandra deep fields, hints towards an higher normalization for the total AGN luminosity function, if these sources lie at 5

The Unification Model for active galactic nuclei posits that Seyfert 2s are intrinsically like Seyfert 1s, but that their broad-line regions (BLRs) are hidden from our view. A Seyfert 2 nucleus that truly lacked a BLR, instead of simply having it hidden, would be a so-called "true" Seyfert 2. No object has as yet been conclusively proven to be one. We present a detailed analysis of four of the best "true" Seyfert 2 candidates discovered to date: IC 3639, NGC 3982, NGC 5283, and NGC 5427. None of the four has a broad H-alpha emission line, either in direct or polarized light. All four have rich, high-excitation spectra, blue continua, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images showing them to be unresolved sources with no host-galaxy obscuration. To check for possible obscuration on scales smaller than that resolvable by HST, we obtained X-ray observations using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. All four objects show evidence of obscuration and therefore could have hidden BLRs. The picture that emerges is of moderate to high, but not necessarily Compton-thick, obscuration of the nucleus, with extra-nuclear soft emission extended on the hundreds-of-parsecs scale that may originate in the narrow-line region. Since the extended soft emission compensates, in part, for the nuclear soft emission lost to absorption, both absorption and luminosity are likely to be severely underestimated unless the X-ray spectrum is of sufficient quality to distinguish the two components. This is of special concern where the source is too faint to produce a large number of counts, or where the source is too far away to resolve the extended soft X-ray emitting region., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, submitted to ApJ

We report the Chandra detection of OVII K\alpha absorption at z=0 in the direction of the z=0.03 Seyfert 1 galaxy Mkn 279. The high velocity cloud Complex C lies along this line of sight, with HI 21-cm emission and OVI 1032\AA absorption both observed at velocities of ~ -150 km/s relative to the local standard of rest. We present an improved method for placing limits on the Doppler parameter and column density of a medium when only one unresolved line can be measured; this method is applied to the OVII absorption seen here, indicating that the OVII Doppler parameter is inconsistent with that of any low-velocity (Galactic thick disk) or high-velocity OVI (OVI_HV) component. Direct association of the OVII with the OVI_HV is further ruled out by the high temperatures required to produce the observed OVI_HV/OVII ratio and the significant velocity difference between the OVII and OVI_HV lines. If the OVII absorption is associated with a very broad, undetected OVI component, then the absorption must be broadened by primarily nonthermal processes. The large velocity dispersion and possible slight redshift of the OVII absorption (as well as limits on the absorber's temperature and density) may be indicative of a local intergalactic medium origin, though absorption from a hot, low-density Galactic corona cannot be ruled out., Comment: 20 pages including 5 figures, 1 table; minor changes to text/figures, accepted to ApJ

We present the first systematic study of (non-radio-selected) radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies. Cross-correlation of the `Catalogue of Quasars and Active Nuclei' with several radio and optical catalogues led to the identification of 11 radio-loud NLS1 candidates including 4 previously known ones. Most of the radio-loud NLS1s are compact, steep spectrum sources accreting close to, or above, the Eddington limit. The radio-loud NLS1s of our sample are remarkable in that they occupy a previously rarely populated regime in NLS1 multi-wavelength parameter space. While their [OIII]/H_beta and FeII/H_beta intensity ratios almost cover the whole range observed in NLS1 galaxies, their radio properties extend the range of radio-loud objects to those with small widths of the broad Balmer lines. Among the radio-detected NLS1 galaxies, the radio index R distributes quite smoothly up to the critical value of R ~ 10 and covers about 4 orders of magnitude in total. Statistics show that ~7% of the NLS1 galaxies are formally radio-loud while only 2.5% exceed a radio index R > 100. Several mechanisms are considered as explanations for the radio loudness of the NLS1 galaxies and for the lower frequency of radio-louds among NLS1s than quasars. While properties of most sources (with 2-3 exceptions) generally do not favor relativistic beaming, the combination of accretion mode and spin may explain the observations. We report identification of the radio loud narrow-line quasar SDSS J172206.03+565451.6 which we found in the course of a search for radio loud narrow-line Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). SDSSJ172206.03+565451.6 is only the ~4th securely identified radio loud narrow-line quasar and the second-most radio loudest with a radio index R_1.4 ~ 100-700. Its black hole mass, M_BH = (2-3) 10^7 M_sun, is unusually small given its radio loudness, and the combination of mass and radio index puts SDSSJ172206.03+565451.6 in a scarcely populated region of M_BH-R diagrams. SDSSJ172206.03+565451.6 is a classical Narrow-Line Seyfert1-type object with FWHM_Hbeta = 1490 km/s, an intensity ratio of [OIII]/Hbeta = 0.7 and FeII emission complexes with FeII4570/Hbeta = 0.7. The ionization parameter of its narrow-line region, estimated from the line ratio [OII]/[OIII], is similar to Seyferts and its high ratio of [NeV]/[NeIII] indicates a strong EUV to soft-X-ray excess. We advertise the combined usage of [OII]/[OIII] and [NeV]/[NeIII] diagrams as a useful diagnostic tool to estimate ionization parameters and to constrain the EUV continuum shape relatively independent from other parameters., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures; ApJ, in press

We report on our XMM observations of the high redshift quasars BR 2237--0607 (z=4.558) and BR 0351--1034 (z=4.351), together with 14 other z>4 objects found in the XMM public archive. Contrary to former reports, we do not find high redshift radio-loud quasars to be more absorbed than their radio-quiet counterparts. We find that the optical to X-ray spectral index alpha-ox is correlated with the luminosity density at 2500 A, but does not show a correlation with redshift. The mean 2-10 keV power-law slope of the 9 high redshift radio-quiet quasars in our sample for which a spectral analysis can be performed is alpha-x1.23+-0.48, similar to alpha-x=1.19 found from the ASCA observations of low redshift Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), and significantly different from alpha-x=0.78 found for low redshift Broad-Line Seyfert galaxies. While the optical/UV spectra of low to high redshift quasars look remarkably similar, we find a first indication of a difference in their X-ray spectrum. The steep X-ray spectral index suggests high Eddington ratios L/L_Edd. These observations give credence to the hypothesis of Mathur (2000) that NLS1s are low luminosity cousins of high redshift quasars, both likely to be in their early evolutionary stage., 25 pages, AJ, in press (Jan 2006)

We present measurements of the metallicity of the circumnuclear gas in the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Markarian 1044 using O VI column density measurements from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) together with C IV, N V, and H I measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). From the absorption lines we find that the circumnuclear gas in Mrk 1044 has a metallicity of at least 5 times solar, consistent with the expectation from previous emission-line studies that NLS1s have a high metallicity, similar to that found in high-redshift quasars. More surprisingly, we find that the absorbing material requires a near-solar mixture of elements in which the N/C ratio is consistent with the solar ratio and does not scale with the metallicity. This suggests that the chemical enrichment scenario for this active galactic nucleus (and thus possibly others) may be different from the traditional model of galactic metal enrichment, at least in the high-metallicity regime.

We re-examine the locus of narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies on the M_BH--sigma (black hole mass--bulge velocity dispersion) plane in the light of the results from large new optically selected samples. We find that (1) soft X-ray selected NLS1s have a lower ratio of BH mass to \sigma^{4}_{[OIII]} than broad line Seyfert 1 galaxies; this remains a robust statistical result contrary to recent claims otherwise; (2) optically selected NLS1s have systematically lower Eddington luminosity ratio compared to X-ray selected NLS1s; and (3) as a result, the locus of NLS1s on the M_BH--sigma plane is affected by selection effects. We argue that there is no single explanation for the origin of the M_BH--sigma relation; instead tracks of galaxies on the M_BH--sigma plane differ with redshift, consistent with the downsizing of AGN activity. If these results at face value are incorrect, then the data imply that AGNs with high Eddington accretion reside preferentially in relatively late type galaxies at the present epoch, perhaps a more interesting result and a challenge to theoretical models.

We report the detection of highly-ionized gas at z~0 seen in resonant UV and X-ray absorption lines toward the z=0.03 blazar Mkn 421. A total of 13 X-ray and 3 UV lines were measured (or upper limits derived), including three lines in the OVII K-series and K\alpha transitions from neon, carbon, and nitrogen. From the three OVII lines we derive a 2\sigma Doppler parameter constraint of 24

We present the first >=3.5 sigma (conservative) or >=5.8 sigma (sum of lines significance) detection of two Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) filaments at z>0, which we find along the line of sight to the blazar Mkn 421. These systems are detected through highly ionized resonant metal absorption in high quality Chandra-ACIS and -HRC Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) spectra of Mkn 421, obtained following our two Target of Opportunity requests during two outburst phases. The two intervening WHIM systems that we detect, have OVII and NVII columns of N(OVII)=(1.0 +/- 0.3) x 1e15 cm-2} N(NVII)=(0.8 +/- 0.4) x 1e15 cm-2, and N(OVII)=(0.7 +/- 0.3) x 1e15 cm-2, N(NVII)=(1.4 +/- 0.5) x 1e15 cm-2 respectively. From the detected number of WHIM filaments along this line of sight we can estimate the number of OVII filaments per unit redshift with columns larger than 7e14 cm-2, dP(OVII)/dz(N(OVII)>=7e14) = 67^{+88}_{-43}, consistent, within the large 1-sigma errors, with the hydrodynamical simulation predictions of dP(OVII)/dz(N(OVII)>=7e14) = 30. Finally, we measure a cosmological mass density of X-ray WHIM filaments Omega_b = 0.027^{+0.038}_{-0.019} x 10^{[O/H]_{-1}}, consistent with both model predictions and the estimated number of 'missing' baryons at low redshift., 51 pages, 18 figures. Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s (NLS1s) are known to have extreme values of a number of properties compared to Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) as a class. In particular, previous emission-line studies have suggested that NLS1s are unusually metal rich compared to broad-line AGN of comparable luminosity. We present low- and medium-resolution spectroscopic observations of the NLS1 Markarian 1044 with the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrometer (STIS). We identify two blueshifted intrinsic absorption systems at -1145 and -295 km/s relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. Using a simple photoionization model of the absorbing gas, we find that the strongest and best-measured of the absorption systems has N/C approximately 6.96 times the solar value. We also report on the discovery of three new Ly-alpha forest lines with neutral Hydrogen column density log greater than 12.77 in the log. This number is consistent with the 2.6 expected in the path length to the source redshift of Mrk 1044.

We report the results of two Chandra ACIS-S observations from February and August 2003 of the highly X-ray variable Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy RX J2217.9--5941. Observations spanning the time from the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) through an ASCA observation in 1998 indicate apparently monotonically decreasing flux by a factor of 30. The Chandra observations reveal increased emission over that seen in ASCA, supporting a persistent variability rather than an X-ray outburst event. However, the cause of the strong X-ray variability remains unclear. Our Chandra observations confirm the steep soft X-ray spectrum in the 0.2-2.0 keV band found during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey observation (\ax=2.7). The spectral shape of the source appears to be variable with the spectrum becoming softer when the source becomes fainter. Best fitting models to the data include an absorbed broken power law, a blackbody plus power law, and a power law with partial covering absorption. The latter model suggests a variable partial-covering absorber in the line of sight which can explain in part the variability seen in RX J2217.9--5941. We suggest that there might be a population of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies which are at least at times highly absorbed.

We present black hole mass--bulge velocity dispersion relation for a complete sample of 75 soft X-ray selected AGNs: 43 broad line Seyfert 1s and 32 narrow line Seyfert 1s. We use luminosity and FWHM(H-beta) as surrogates for black hole mass and FWHM([OIII]) as a surrogate for the bulge velocity dispersion. We find that NLS1s lie below the M-BH - sigma relation of BLS1s, confirming the Mathur et al. (2001) result. The statistical result is robust and not due to any systematic measurement error. This has important consequences towards our understanding of black hole formation and growth: black holes grow by accretion in well formed bulges, possibly after a major merger. As they grow, they get closer to the M-BH - sigma relation for normal galaxies. The accretion is highest in the beginning and dwindles as the time goes by. Our result does not support theories of M-BH - sigma relation in which the black hole mass is a constant fraction of the bulge mass/ velocity dispersion at all times or those in which bulge growth is controlled by AGN feedback.

We present the intrinsic spectral energy distribution (SED) of the NLS1 Arakelian 564, constructed with contemporaneous data obtained during a multi-wavelength, multi-satellite observing campaign in 2000 and 2001. We compare it with that of the NLS1 Ton S180 and with those obtained for BLS1s to infer how the relative accretion rates vary among the Sy1 population. Although the peak of the SED is not well constrained, most of the energy is emitted in the 10-100 eV regime, constituting roughly half of the emitted energy in the optical/X-ray ranges. This is consistent with a primary spectral component peaking in the extreme UV/soft X-ray band, and disk-corona models, hence high accretion rates. Indeed, we estimate that \dot{m}~1. We examine the emission lines in its spectrum, and we constrain the physical properties of the line-emitting gas through photoionization modeling. The line-emitting gas is characterized by log n~11 and log U~0, and is stratified around log U~0. Our estimate of the radius of the H\beta-emitting region ~10 \pm 2 lt-days is consistent with the radius-luminosity relationships found for Sy1 galaxies. We also find evidence for super-solar metallicity in this NLS1. We show that the emission lines are not good diagnostics for the underlying SEDs and that the absorption line studies offer a far more powerful tool to determine the ionizing continuum of AGNs, especially if comparing the lower- and higher-ionization lines.

The red quasar 3C212 (z = 1.049) is one of the most distant and most luminous AGN which has shown evidence of an X-ray warm absorber. In order to further investigate this unusual quasar, we used Chandra/ACIS-S to observe 3C212 for 19.5 ksec, resulting in a net detection of � 4000 counts. The Chandra data confirm the presence of an excess absorbing column NH � 4 × 10 21 cm −2 at the quasar redshift, but we find no compelling evidence for a warm absorber. Using both the Chandra and archival ROSAT PSPC data, we obtain very good fits for both a partially covered neutral absorber and a low-ionization (U = 0.03) photo-ionized absorber. In the ultraviolet, 3C212 shows a strong associated Mg ii absorber. Based on a moderate resolution (80kms −1 ) MMT spectrum we show that the absorber is highly saturated and has a covering fraction less than 60%, implying that the absorber is truly intrinsic to the quasar. Photo-ionization modeling of the Mg ii absorber yields a constraint on the ionization parameter of U < 0.03, inconsistent with a warm UV/X-ray absorber. In addition to our spectral analysis, we find evidence in the ACIS image data for weak extended emission surrounding the quasar as well as emission corresponding to the radio lobes at a distance of 5 ′′ from 3C212. The statistical significance of these features is low, but we briefly explore the implications if the detections are valid. We report on the results of XMM-Newton observations of two Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs), Q1246-057 and SBS 1542+541. Unprecedented sensitivity of XMM allows spectral analysis of these X-ray weak sources. The X-ray spectral data of these sources can be fitted by a power-law with alpha_X=1.0-1.2 and either a partially covering absorber or an ionized absorber model. Rest frame UV spectroscopy together with polarimetry favors the model with a partially covering absorber with column density a few times 10^22 cm^-2 and a covering fraction of about 0.80. After correcting for absorption, the X-ray loudness of these BAL QSOs appears to be similar to other, unabsorbed quasars. The mystery of X-ray weakness of BAL QSOs appears to be all but solved, with strong absorption being the primary reason. With the available X-ray data, however, the issue of whether BAL QSOs represent highly accreting/ younger population of quasars remains unsettled.

We present observations of the intrinsic absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). We have combined 18 STIS and five FUSE observations to obtain a high signal-to-noise ratio averaged spectrum spanning 905-1730 A. The averaged spectrum reveals absorption in O VI, N V, C IV, N III, C III, and the Lyman lines up to Ly in the three blueshifted kinematic components previously detected in the STIS spectrum (at radial velocities of -1320, -724, and -548 km s-1). The highest velocity component exhibits absorption in Si IV. We also detect metastable C III in this component, indicating a high density in this absorber. No lower ionization lines, i.e., C II and Si II, are detected. A weak, fourth absorption component is tentatively detected in the high-ionization lines and Lyα and Lyβ at a radial velocity of -1027 km s-1. The Lyman lines reveal a complex absorption geometry. The strength of the higher order lines indicates that Lyα and Lyβ are saturated over much of the resolved profiles in the three strongest absorption components and that, therefore, their observed profiles are determined by the covering factor. We separate the individual covering factors of the continuum and emission-line sources as a function of velocity in each kinematic component using the Lyα and Lyβ lines. The covering factor of the broad-line region is found to vary dramatically between the cores of the individual kinematic components, ranging from 0 to 0.84. In addition, we find that the continuum covering factor varies with velocity within the individual kinematic components, decreasing smoothly in the wings of the absorption by at least 60%. Comparison of the effective covering factors derived from the H I results with those determined directly from the doublets reveals that the covering factor of Si IV is less than half that of H I and N V in the high-velocity component. In addition, the FWHMs of N III and Si IV are narrower than those of the higher ionization lines in this component. These results indicate there is substructure within this absorber. We also find evidence for structure in the column density profiles of the high-ionization lines in this component. We derive a lower limit on the total column (NH ≥ 1019 cm-2) and ionization parameter (U ≥ 0.005) in the low-ionization subcomponent of this absorber. The metastable-to-total C III column density ratio implies ne ≈ 109 cm-3 and an upper limit on the distance of the absorber from the ionizing continuum of R ≤ 8 × 1017 cm. The decreasing covering factor found in the wings of the absorption and the extreme compactness of the C III* absorber are suggestive of a clumpy absorption gas with a low volume filling factor.

We present a high resolution (R~500) X-ray spectrum of the bright quasar H1821+643 (z=0.297), obtained in a 470 ksec Chandra observation. We search for X-ray absorption by highly ionized metal species, OVII and OVIII in particular, at the redshifts of the six intervening OVI absorption systems known from UV studies. We detect features with >~2-sigma significance at the predicted OVII and OVIII wavelengths of one OVI system, at the OVII wavelength of a second, and at the NeIX wavelength of a third. We find two additional features of comparable strength (one OVII and one OVIII) within 1000 km/s of OVI redshifts. The 1-sigma constraints in the two detected OVI systems imply gas overdensities lower than the values delta>100 expected in virialized systems, suggesting that the absorption arises in lower density, filamentary structures. At the 2-sigma level, however, the physical constraints are weak. If we treat our 2-sigma detections of known OVI systems as real, but assume minimal OVII and OVIII in the other systems, we estimate [f(OVI)+f(OVII)+f(OVIII)]/f(OVI) = 32 +/- 9 for the average ratio of all highly ionized oxygen species to OVI. Combined with estimates of the total column density of OVI absorption per unit redshift, this ratio implies a total baryon fraction associated with detected OVI absorbers Omega_b(OVI)~0.03/h_70, a substantial fraction of the baryon density predicted by BBN, and larger than that in known low redshift components. Because of the limited S/N of the detections, these results must be treated with caution. Nonetheless, the combination of the OVI data with these X-ray forest measurements provides the most direct evidence to date for the pervasive, moderate density, shock-heated intergalactic medium predicted by leading cosmological scenarios. We present the first X-ray detection of resonant absorption from warm/hot local gas either in our Galaxy, or in the Intergalactic space surrounding our Galaxy, along the line of sight toward the blazar PKS 2155-304. The Chandra HRCS-LETG spectrum of this z=0.116 source clearly shows unresolved OVII(Ka) and NeIX(Ka) resonant absorption lines at 21.603 A and 13.448 A (i.e. cz = [-340--200] km/s in the rest frame, from the OVII line). OVIII(Ka) and OVII(Kb) from the same system are also detected at a lower significance level, while upper limits are set on OVIII(Kb), NeX(Ka) and NeIX(Kb). The FUSE spectrum of this source shows complex OVI(2s-->2p) absorption at the same redshift as the X-ray system, made by at least two components: one relatively narrow and slightly redshifted, and one broader and blueshifted (cz = -135 km/s). We demonstrate that the physical states of the UV and X-ray absorbers are hard to reconcile with a single, purely collisionally ionized, equilibrium plasma. We propose, instead, that the X-ray and, at least the broader and blueshifted UV absorber are produced in a low density intergalactic plasma (partly photoionized by the diffuse extragalactic X-ray background), collapsing towards our Galaxy, consistent with the predictions of a Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) from numerical simulations. We find that any reasonable solution requires overabundance of Ne compared to O by a factor of ~2, with respect to the solar value and propose several scenarios to account for this observation., 25 pages, 6 figures, re-submited to ApJ after minor referee's comments

We report on Chandra observations of three quasars SDSSP J083643+005453, SDSSP J103027+052455, and SDSSP J130608+035626 at redshifts 5.82, 6.28 and 5.99 respectively. All the three sources are clearly detected in the X-ray band, up to rest frame energies of ~55 keV. These observations demonstrate the unprecedented sensitivity of Chandra to detect faint sources in relatively short exposure times (5.7--8.2 ksec). The broad band X-ray properties of these highest redshift quasars do not appear to be any different from their lower redshift cousins. Spectra of the sources could not be determined with only few counts detected. Observations with XMM-Newton will be able to constrain the spectral shapes, if they are simple. Determination of complex spectra in a reasonable amount of time, however, will have to await next generation of X-ray missions.

We present a 35 day ASCA observation of the NLS1 Akn 564, which was part of a multiwavelength AGN Watch monitoring campaign. Akn 564 shows a photon index varying across the range 2.45--2.72. The presence of the soft hump component below 1 keV, previously detected in ASCA data, is confirmed. Time-resolved spectroscopy with ~daily sampling reveals a distinction in the variability of the soft hump and power-law components over a timescale of weeks, with the hump varying by a factor of 6 across the 35-day observation compared to a factor 4 in the power-law. Flux variations in the power-law component are measured down to a timescale of ~1000s and accompanying spectral variability suggests the soft hump is not well-correlated with the power-law on such short timescales. We detect Fe Ka and a blend of Fe Kb plus Ni Ka, indicating an origin in highly ionized gas. Variability measurements constrain the bulk of the Fe Ka to originate within a light week of the nucleus. The large EW of the emission lines may be due to high metallicity in NLS1s, supporting some evolutionary models for AGN., 41 pages, 15 figures. The newly discovered z=5.8 quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 was recently detected in X-rays and found to be extremely X-ray weak. Here we present the hardness ratio analysis of the XMM-Newton observation. We consider various models to explain the detection in the soft X-ray band and non-detection in the hard band, together with its X-ray weakness. We show that the source may have a steep power-law slope, with an absorber partially covering the continuum. This may be X-ray evidence to support the argument of Mathur (2000) that narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies, which show steep power-law slopes, might be the low redshift, low luminosity analogues of the high redshift quasars. Heavily shrouded and steep X-ray spectrum quasars may indeed represent the early stages of quasar evolution (Mathur 2000, Fabian 1999) and SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 is possibly giving us a first glimpse of the physical evolution of quasar properties.

The presence of a 'warm absorber' was first suggested to explain spectral variability in an X-ray spectrum of the radio-quiet quasi-stellar object (QSO) MR 2251-178. A unified picture, in which X-ray warm absorbers and 'intrinsic' UV absorbers are the same, offers the opportunity to probe the nuclear environment of active galactic nuclei. To test this scenario and understand the physical properties of the absorber, we obtained a UV spectrum of MR 2251-178 with the Faint Object Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The HST spectrum clearly shows absorption due to Lyalpha, N v, and C IV, blueshifted by 300 km s(exp -1) from the emission redshift of the QSO. The rarity of both X-ray and UV absorbers in radio-quiet QSOs suggests these absorbers are physically related, if not identical. Assuming the unified scenario, we place constraints on the physical parameters of the absorber and conclude the mass outflow rate is essentially the same as the accretion rate in MR 2251-178.

We present a deep ($\sim$85 ksec) ASCA observation of the prototype Broad Absorption Line Quasar (BALQSO) PHL 5200. This is the best X-ray spectrum of a BALQSO yet. We find that (1) the source is not intrinsically X-ray weak, (2) the line of sight absorption is very strong with N_H=5 x 10^{23} cm^{-2}, (3) the absorber does not cover the source completely; the covering fraction is about 90%. This is consistent with the large optical polarization observed in this source, implying multiple lines of sight. The most surprising result of this observation is that (4) the spectrum of this BALQSO is not exactly similar to other radio-quiet quasars. The hard X-ray spectrum of PHL 5200 is steep with the power-law spectral index alpha ~1.5. This is similar to the steepest hard X-ray slopes observed so far. At low redshifts, such steep slopes are observed in narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies, believed to be accreting at a high Eddington rate. This observation strengthens the analogy between BALQSOs and NLS1 galaxies and supports the hypothesis that BALQSOs represent an early evolutionary state of quasars (Mathur 2000). It is well accepted that the orientation to the line of sight determines the appearance of a quasar; age seems to play a significant role as well.

In this paper we present the analysis of two broad band (0.1-150 keV) BeppoSAX observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516. The two observations were taken 4 months apart, on 1996 November 8 and 1997 March 12 respectively. We report a dramatic change in the degree of obscuration of the central source between the two observations, and propose, as possible explanations transient absorption by either a stationary-state cloud of cold gas crossing the line of sight, or a varying-state, initially neutral and dense amount of expanding gas with decreasing density and therefore decreasing opacity. We also report the detection of a second highly ionized absorber/emitter, which causes deep FeXVII-XXII K edges at about 7.8 keV to appear in both BeppoSAX spectra of NGC 3516, and possibly produces the soft X-ray continuum emission and the 1 keV blend of Fe L recombination lines detected during the epoch of heavy nuclear obscuration., Comment: 30 pages, 5 eps figures, AAS Latex, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We study the UV spectra of narrow-line Seyfert~1 (NLSy1) galaxies and compare them with ``normal'' AGN. Similar to their optical lines, the NLSy1s show narrower UV lines. They are also characterized by weaker CIV 1549, CIII] 1909, and stronger AlIII 1857 emission. These UV line properties add to the optical and X-ray properties known to be part of the Boroson and Green eigenvector 1. We show that the steep soft-X-rays, which characterize the NLSy1s SEDs, change the equilibrium of the two phase cloud-intercloud medium resulting in somewhat higher BLR cloud densities, lower ionization parameter and larger BLR radii. These modified conditions can explain the unusual emission line properties we find in NLSy1. Using a specific model of an accretion disk with corona presented by Witt, Czerny and Zycki (1997), we also show that the steep soft and hard-X-ray continua can be explained if the $L/L_{Edd}$ ratios are larger than in ``normal'' Seyfert1/QSO strengthening earlier suggestions that the $L/L_{Edd}$ is the physical parameter driving this eigenvector.

The quasar PKS 0637-753, the first celestial X-ray target of the Chandra X-ray Observatory, has revealed asymmetric X-ray structure extending from 3 to 12 arcsec west of the quasar, coincident with the inner portion of the jet previously detected in a 4.8 GHz radio image (Tingay et al. 1998). At a redshift of z=0.651, the jet is the largest (~100 kpc) and most luminous (~10^{44.6} ergs/s) of the few so far detected in X-rays. This letter presents a high resolution X-ray image of the jet, from 42 ks of data when PKS 0637-753 was on-axis and ACIS-S was near the optimum focus. For the inner portion of the radio jet, the X-ray morphology closely matches that of new ATCA radio images at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz. Observations of the parsec scale core using the VSOP space VLBI mission show structure aligned with the X-ray jet, placing important constraints on the X-ray source models. HST images show that there are three small knots coincident with the peak radio and X-ray emission. Two of these are resolved, which we use to estimate the sizes of the X-ray and radio knots. The outer portion of the radio jet, and a radio component to the east, show no X-ray emission to a limit of about 100 times lower flux. The X-ray emission is difficult to explain with models that successfully account for extra-nuclear X-ray/radio structures in other active galaxies. We think the most plausible is a synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model, but this would imply extreme departures from the conventional minimum-energy and/or homogeneity assumptions. We also rule out synchrotron or thermal bremsstrahlung models for the jet X-rays, unless multicomponent or ad hoc geometries are invoked.

We investigate the relations between the observed emission-line strengths, widths, and continuum properties of a sample of 41 low-redshift (z

We have used the ASCA satellite to make the first X-ray spectra of Markarian 6, a bright Seyfert 1.5 galaxy with complex and variable permitted lines, an ionization cone, and remarkable radio structures. Our 0.6--9.5 keV spectra penetrate to the black hole core of this Seyfert and reveal heavy and complex intrinsic X-ray absorption. Both total covering and single partial covering models fail to acceptably fit the observed absorption, and double partial covering or partial covering plus warm absorption appears to be required. The double partial covering model provides the best statistical fit to the data, and we measure large column densities of ~ (3-20) * 10^{22} cm^{-2} irrespective of the particular spectral model under consideration. These X-ray columns are over an order of magnitude larger than expected based on observations at longer wavelengths. Our data suggest that most of the X-ray absorption occurs either in gas that has a relatively small amount of dust or in gas that is located within the Broad Line Region. The X-ray absorber may well be the putative `atmosphere' above the torus that collimates the ionization cone. We also detect an apparently broad 6.4 keV iron K-alpha line, and we present optical spectra demonstrating that the optical emission lines were in a representative state during our ASCA observation., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, Astrophysical Journal. The unified picture of X-ray/UV absorbers offers an unique opportunity to probe the nuclear environment of AGNs. To test the unified absorber scenario and to understand the physical properties of the absorber we obtained the first UV spectrum of PG1114+445, using HST FOS. PG1114+445 is known to have an X-ray ionized (``warm'') absorber, so that UV absorption is predicted. The HST spectrum clearly shows strong UV absorption lines due to Lya, CIV and NV, blueshifted by ~600 km/s with respect to the quasar redshift. Since both X-ray and UV absorbers are rare in radio-quiet quasars, these observations argue strongly that the X-ray and UV absorbers are closely physically related, probably identical. We place constraints on the parameters of the absorber and conclude that the mass outflow rate is comparable to the accretion rate in PG1114+445.

PKS1830-211 is an unusually radio-loud gravitationally lensed quasar. In the radio, the system appears as two compact, dominant features surrounded by relatively extended radio emission which forms an Einstein Ring. As the line of sight to it passes close to our Galactic center, PKS1830-211 has not been detected in wave-bands other than the radio and X-ray so far. Here we present X-ray data of PKS1830-211 observed with ROSAT PSPC. The X-ray spectrum shows that absorption in excess of the Galactic contribution is highly likely, which at the redshift of the lensing galaxy ($z_l=0.886$) corresponds to N$_H=3.5^{+0.6}_{-0.5}\times 10^{22}$ atoms cm$^{-2}$. The effective optical extinction is large, A$_V$(observed)\gax5.8. When corrected for this additional extinction, the two point optical to X-ray slope \aox\ of PKS1830-211 lies just within the observed range of quasars. It is argued here that both compact images must be covered by the X-ray absorber(s) which we infer to be the lensing galaxy(galaxies). We present the results of a search for nuclear X-ray activity in nearby galaxies using Chandra archival data in a sample of 62 galaxies from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxy Survey (SINGS). We detect 37 nuclear X-ray sources; seven of these are new detections. Most of the nuclear X-ray sources are likely to be AGNs. The fraction of galaxies hosting AGNs is thus about 60%, much higher than that found with optical searches, and demonstrates the efficacy of X-ray observations to find hidden AGNs in optically normal galaxies. We find that the nuclear X-ray sources are preferentially present in earlier type galaxies. Unlike what is observed at high redshift, we do not find a strong correlation between the AGN luminosity and the 24 micron luminosity of the host galaxy; we find a strong correlation with the 3.6 micron luminosity instead. We present low-resolution ultraviolet spectra of 14 low-redshift (z_(em) ≲ 0.8) quasars observed with the Hubble Space Telescope STIS as part of a Snapshot project to understand the relationship between quasar outflows and luminosity. By design, all observations cover the C IV emission line. Ten of the quasars are from the Hamburg-ESO catalog, three are from the Palomar-Green catalog, and one is from the Parkes catalog. The sample contains a few interesting quasars, including two broad absorption line (BAL) quasars (HE 0143-3535 and HE 0436-2614), one quasar with a mini-BAL (HE 1105-0746), and one quasar with associated narrow absorption (HE 0409-5004). These BAL quasars are among the brightest known (although not the most luminous) since they lie at z_(em) < 0.8. We compare the properties of these BAL quasars to the z_(em) < 0.5 Palomar-Green and z_(em) > 1.4 Large Bright Quasar Survey samples. By design, our objects sample luminosities in between these two surveys, and our four absorbed objects are consistent with the v ~ L^(0.62) relation derived by Laor & Brandt (2002). Another quasar, HE 0441-2826, contains extremely weak emission lines, and our spectrum is consistent with a simple power-law continuum. The quasar is radio-loud but has a steep spectral index and a lobe-dominated morphology, which argues against it being a blazar. The unusual spectrum of this quasar resembles the spectra of the quasars PG 1407+265, SDSS J1136+0242, and PKS 1004+13, for which several possible explanations have been entertained.

We present multiwavelength observations that trace more than 40 yr in the life of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in Mrk 590, traditionally known as a classic Seyfert 1 galaxy. From spectra recently obtained from Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra, and the Large Binocular Telescope, we find that the activity in the nucleus of Mrk 590 has diminished so significantly that the continuum luminosity is a factor of 100 lower than the peak luminosity probed by our long-baseline observations. Furthermore, the broad emission lines, once prominent in the UV/optical spectrum, have all but disappeared. Since AGN type is defined by the presence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum, our observations demonstrate that Mrk 590 has now become a 'changing-look' AGN. If classified by recent optical spectra, Mrk 590 would be a Seyfert ∼1.9–2, where the only broad emission line still visible in the optical spectrum is a weak component of Hα. As an additional consequence of this change, we have definitively detected UV narrow-line components in a Type 1 AGN, allowing an analysis of these emission-line components with high-resolution COS spectra. These observations challenge the historical paradigm that AGN type is only a consequence of the line-of-sight viewing anglemore » toward the nucleus in the presence of a geometrically flattened, obscuring medium (i.e., the torus). Our data instead suggest that the current state of Mrk 590 is a consequence of the change in luminosity, which implies the black hole accretion rate has significantly decreased.« less

After the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae discovered a significant brightening of the inner region of NGC 2617, we began a ∼70 day photometric and spectroscopic monitoring campaign from the X-ray through near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. We report that NGC 2617 went through a dramatic outburst, during which its X-ray flux increased by over an order of magnitude followed by an increase of its optical/ultraviolet (UV) continuum flux by almost an order of magnitude. NGC 2617, classified as a Seyfert 1.8 galaxy in 2003, is now a Seyfert 1 due to the appearance of broad optical emission lines and a continuum blue bump. Such 'changing look active galactic nuclei (AGNs)' are rare and provide us with important insights about AGN physics. Based on the Hβ line width and the radius-luminosity relation, we estimate the mass of central black hole (BH) to be (4 ± 1) × 10{sup 7} M {sub ☉}. When we cross-correlate the light curves, we find that the disk emission lags the X-rays, with the lag becoming longer as we move from the UV (2-3 days) to the NIR (6-9 days). Also, the NIR is more heavily temporally smoothed than the UV. This can largely be explained bymore » a simple model of a thermally emitting thin disk around a BH of the estimated mass that is illuminated by the observed, variable X-ray fluxes.« less

We have used Chandra observations of eight bulge-less disk galaxies to identify new ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) candidates, study their high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) population, and search for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We report the discovery of 16 new ULX candidates in our sample of galaxies. Eight of these are found in the star forming galaxy NGC 337, none of which are expected to be background contaminants. The HMXB luminosity function of NGC 337 implies a star formation rate (SFR) of 6.8$^{+4.4}_{-3.5}$ \msun\ yr$^{-1}$, consistent at 1.5$\sigma$ with a recent state of the art SFR determination. We also report the discovery of a bright ULX candidate (X-1) in ESO 501-23. X-1's spectrum is well fit by an absorbed power law with $\Gamma = 1.18^{+0.19}_{-0.11}$ and N$\rm{_H}$ = 1.13$^{+7.07}_{-1.13} \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$, implying a 0.3-8 keV flux of $1.08^{+0.05}_{-0.07} \times 10^{-12}$ \esc. Its X-ray luminosity (L$_X$) is poorly constrained due to uncertainties in the host galaxy's distance, but we argue that its spectrum implies L$_X > 10^{40}$ \es. An optical counterpart to this object may be present in HST imaging. We also identify ULX candidates in IC 1291, PGC 3853, NGC 5964 and NGC 2805. We find no evidence of nuclear activity in the galaxies in our sample, placing a flux upper limit of $4 \times 10^{-15}$ \esc\ on putative AGN.
